I'm not entirely convinced about that assessment. I quite readily agree that the jobs should be posted to *a* mailing list, I'm not so sure that it should be this mailing list. It's been discussed about filtering the jobs sent to the list, but I already filter the code4lib mailing list into a tag. It's been a bit of a faff, but I've subdivided the filtering so that I can get the messages sent from jobs@... to go to a different tag. But then Ed replied to one, so now it appears in both tags, and because I'm using Gmail, it takes the whole thread with it. So filtering really isn't a solution. Rather than just asking whether jobs should come to this mailing list, maybe we can ask whether a separate mailing list should be set up, specifically for jobs. The two mailing lists could be cross promoted (e.g. a standard footer), and people can choose whether they want or don't want to receive them. And we can still have discussions/follow-ups about those jobs on that mailing list. Even though the vast majority of the postings aren't applicable to me, I would probably still sign up to a separate jobs mailing list as it is of interest - but I would at least then be able to keep that separate from the main discussions, which is something I can't effectively do right now. Re: [CODE4LIB] How do you request digital format for a pdf interlibrary loan journal article where a digital format is available for the article?...
Actually, licenses with the vendor for the electronic journal generally determine if you can use it for ILL. This is in addition to Copyright restrictions that apply for articles in any format. Copyright may allow it, through Fair Use or paying CCC fees, but if the license does not, then you are in violation of the contract if you use it for ILL. Electronic format adds a fun layer of contract law to the Copyright discussion. ALIAS (Article Licensing Information Availability Service) is a generic license database that is loaded with publicly available licenses from most of the publishers and providers. If you are interested in seeing ALIAS, please go to the IDS Project page and download one of the presentations: http://www.idsproject.org/Tools/ALIAS.aspx ALIAS is also available for any ILLiad library through the use of the Serials Solutions or SFX Addons: https://prometheus.atlas-sys.com/display/ILLiadAddons/Addons+Directory . Additionally, these addons can be configured to use the Copyright Clearance Center's Get It Now Service: The Toolkit entry on it: http://workflowtoolkit.wordpress.com/2011/03/24/ccc-getitnow-service-and-workfst low/ <http://workflowtoolkit.wordpress.com/2011/03/24/ccc-getitnow-service-and-workfst%20low/> The CCC Get-It-Now website is: http://www.copyright.com/content/cc3/en/toolbar/productsAndSolutions/getitnow.html The Get It Now Service is a Purchase on Demand service from CCC and gives libraries another option instead of paying Copyright fees which may be higher than purchasing the article. [I am not a lawyer.] It's always a good idea to check with counsel, but it's a good idea to make sure that you talk to the right person in counsel's office since this is a relatively niche area of copyright law, and restrictions on single article ILL are more likely to arise in contract rather than under copyright, in which case they may have to check the specific provisions for each publisher. The right to make a copy of a single article from a periodical or collection for ILL are granted under 17 USC § 108 (d) and (g). The only specific restriction on the use of digital formats comes in section (b) (which covers unpublished works). It's hard to see how printing then scanning helps make legal anything that would be otherwise illegal under 108, so it would seem to be a licensing issue. Exit question: printing an article creates one perfected copy; scanning the printout creates a second copy, both as part of the same transaction. 108 (d)/(g) only authorize a single copy in this situation. Is this relying on fair use to cover the printed copy (which I assume is immediately destroyed unread once the scanning is complete?) Simon
[CODE4LIB] GIST Gift & Deselection Manager (GDM) Has Been Released and is Available for Download
The GIST Team at the State University of New York (SUNY) Geneseo College has released a free and innovative open-source tool called the GIST Gift & Deselection Manager (GDM). It is designed to manage and streamline library work-flow for processing gifts and evaluating materials for weeding. GDM will dramatically improve upon a time-consuming activity by: * Automating the gathering of data for evaluating donations including holdings, comparison of editions you hold, full-text, and other data, * Streamlining the work-flow; recommending “keep or do not keep” according to your collection building conspectus file, and if you keep an item, GDM can open and search the work in OCLC Connexion so you may attach holdings and download a record; * Automating donor letters with lists of donated items – no more keying in title information for acknowledgments and the data is now be stored in GDM’s database; * Evaluating data for weeding title by title or batch titles en masse GDM automatically creates a spreadsheet for evaluating tens of thousands of titles (we found that over 13% of our 31K items we evaluated were available full text in the Hathi Trust); GDM also works for evaluating journal titles across consortia. How does GDM work? GDM uses several APIs (application programming interface) to leverage important data about items so you don’t have to manually look them up in various web browser searches. GDM does all the searches when you wand in an ISBN or search by title, and gathers the data you need to the streamline your work-flow and make effective decision making. What GDM data and information are important for gift and deselection evaluation? GDM version 1 includes; * _Holdings informatio_n: your holdings (FRBRized), # of holding libraries in your local, consortia, and/or state, * _Item information_: your ILS item record to compare imprint, Worldcat link to see more about the item, Hathi Trust and Google Books full-text, Better World Books acceptance as library discard, * _Recommendation information_: GDM automatically recommends "Keep" or "Do Not Keep" based on a customizable subject conspectus – and override or recommend review are options too. * _Custom data_: import library enriched book lists to flag you with notes if the item is an award-winner or on some core title lists, Caldecott and Newbery awards are already loaded in the copy you download. *The Getting It System Toolkit (GIST) projects focus on optimizing work-flow by leveraging systems to do more work while reducing the staff time necessary to make informed decisions and process materials. * GDM Version 1 has been released today, August 16, 2010.
