[CODE4LIB] Blacklight Summit 2015 Summary
Hello fellow Blacklighters, Last week, 30 representatives from 13 institutions gathered at the Blacklight Summit hosted by the Princeton University Library. The event featured demonstrations of Blacklight-powered applications and sessions about enhancing Blacklight applications. Notes from the event’s activities are available on the Blacklight Summit Agenda <https://docs.google.com/document/d/10f9c8uBUls_WvdZvkB64fegslPVF5A1YvVgZRGC76BE/edit#> . The summit participants discussed the upcoming 6.0 release and future directions for Project Blacklight. On Sunday morning, Chris Beer sent out release notes for a version 6 pre-release <https://github.com/projectblacklight/blacklight/releases/tag/v6.0.0.pre3>, which summarize the main upcoming changes. Several of the plugins for Blacklight were updated throughout the summit so that they will be able to support version 6. These include blacklight_advanced_search <https://github.com/projectblacklight/blacklight_advanced_search>, hydra-head <https://github.com/projecthydra/hydra-head>, geoblacklight <https://github.com/geoblacklight/geoblacklight>, blacklight_folders <https://github.com/projectblacklight/blacklight_folders>, blacklight_range_limit <https://github.com/projectblacklight/blacklight_range_limit>, blacklight-marc <https://github.com/projectblacklight/blacklight-marc>, blacklight-maps <https://github.com/projectblacklight/blacklight-maps>, and blacklight-gallery <https://github.com/projectblacklight/blacklight-gallery> . The group consensus was that another Blacklight community knowledge-sharing event should definitely occur in the future, either again at Princeton or at another institution. The Princeton University Library is looking at potentially host another similar event next fall during the week of October 29th-November 6th, 2016. Thanks to all of the event attendees, who made the Blacklight Summit a success. Best, Nikitas Tampakis Ruby on Rails Developer Princeton University Library
Re: [CODE4LIB] Registration Open for Blacklight Summit in Princeton, NJ
Just wanted to provide a lodging update. The block we have at the Nassau Inn is full. If you are interested in overnight lodging at the summit here are a couple of options: There are a couple of Airbnbs within walking distance of the university: https://www.airbnb.com/s/Princeton-University--Princeton--NJ--United-States?guests==11%2F03%2F2015=11%2F06%2F2015_id=pfffd05b=bb (The summit is at the corner of Nassau St and Washington Rd) The Hilton Doubletree is a few miles outside of Princeton on US Route 1 South. They have free shuttle service that can pick you up from the Princeton Junction train station as well as bring you to and from the University for the summit. The current room rate for a double room or single king bed is $118 without tax: http://doubletree3.hilton.com/en/hotels/new-jersey/doubletree-by-hilton-hotel-princeton-PCTDTDT/index.html A more luxurious option still within walking distance is the Peacock Inn ($280 per night +): http://www.peacockinn.com/ Best, Nikitas On Tue, Sep 29, 2015 at 7:16 AM, Nikitas Tampakis <tampa...@princeton.edu> wrote: > Hello all, > > Registration for the Blacklight Summit (Wednesday, November 4th - Friday, > November 6th) hosted by the Princeton University Library is now open on > Eventbrite: > > > https://www.eventbrite.com/e/blacklight-summit-fall-2015-tickets-18250511772 > > We have set up a room block at the Nassau Inn, which is within walking > distance of Aaron Burr Hall, where the summit will take place. [CODE4LIB] Registration Open for Blacklight Summit in Princeton, NJ
Hello all, Registration for the Blacklight Summit (Wednesday, November 4th - Friday, November 6th) hosted by the Princeton University Library is now open on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/blacklight-summit-fall-2015-tickets-18250511772 We have set up a room block at the Nassau Inn, which is within walking distance of Aaron Burr Hall, where the summit will take place. The rate for a double room (2 queen beds) is $140. Including taxes, that is about *$161* per night. Single occupancy is fine. You can reserve your room either by calling the Nassau Inn at 800-862-7728 and mention the Booking ID 21001, or online at the following link: https://bookings.ihotelier.com/bookings.jsp?groupID=1504349=13522 Please note that the room block will be held until* Saturday, October 3rd* (this Saturday). Here is a link to a tentative agenda/schedule for the summit: https://docs.google.com/document/d/10f9c8uBUls_WvdZvkB64fegslPVF5A1YvVgZRGC76BE/edit We are planning on splitting up the time roughly in 2 sections. The first half (Wednesday and possibly spilling into Thursday AM) will be dedicated to specific applications powered by Blacklight. Rob Cartolano of Columbia University will open up the summit with a presentation on the history of the Blacklight project. The participants with running Blacklight instances will provide demonstrations of their applications. The rest of this section will be split up into sessions about customizing/extending Blacklight applications as well as any moving parts involved getting the applications into production. *Please suggest specific sessions on the agenda.* The second half of the summit (Thursday/Friday) will be focused on the Blacklight gems/plugins and discussing a roadmap for future development. We will look at any open issues regarding these plugins and see if any behaviors built into existing Blacklight applications can be shared with the community (either by bringing them into an existing gem’s codebase or by building a new gem). We will then dive into building out these new features. Looking forward to seeing you at the summit. Please don't hesitate to ask me any questions you may have. Re: [CODE4LIB] OCoLC conversion scripts?
Based on https://www.oclc.org/batchload/controlnumber.en.html, this ruby function should get the job done: def oclc_normalize oclc oclc_num = oclc.gsub(/\D/, '').to_i.to_s case oclc_num.length when 1..8 "ocm" + "%08d" % oclc_num when 9 "ocn" + oclc_num else "on" + oclc_num end end examples: oclc_normalize("(OCoLC)3851870") => ocm03851870 oclc_normalize("123456789") => ocn123456789 oclc_normalize("(OCoLC)1987654041") => on1987654041 oclc_normalize("42") => ocm0042 I'm actually currently working on stripping out all of the prefixes from the OCLC number to index into Solr. I wanted the number without any leading zeros, and that gets handled by the first line of the function.
Re: [CODE4LIB] Blacklight Summit November 4-6, 2015 @ Princeton University
Hi Chris, Thanks for asking. The intent of this summit is not to attract potential adopters, but to share existing work and knowledge surrounding Blacklight. This means developers who have built applications on top of Blacklight as well as those who have worked on the Blacklight codebase. I would hope that every institution represented would be prepared to present its Blacklight-related work. We will split the time between presentations and coding sessions depending on the ultimate list of delegates in attendance, and have every intention of allotting time to both. I hope this clarifies things for you and all who are interested. Best, Nikitas On 09/02/2015 06:55 PM, Chris Beer wrote: Hi Nikitas, Thanks for making this happen, it sounds like a great event. Could you clarify the audience you’re trying to pull in? Is this an event for potential adopters, developers building on top of blacklight, and/or developers working in and around the blacklight codebase? It would be great if we could carve out some time for developers working directly on Blacklight and the surrounding ecosystem to think about the roadmap, technical architecture, and future directions for the project.
