Re: [CODE4LIB] Same CMS for both Intranet and Public websites?
We are using Confluence here, campus-wide -- not just for the libraries. The campus installation has over 200 spaces (projects), some of which are public, some private. You can also have private pages within a public space, and vice versa. You can change permissions on any page, and pages inherit permissions by hierarchy, so it is pretty easy to set up a private section of a public space, etc. However, there were some issues I encountered a while back, when trying to move a private page into the public part of the page hierarchy: it was telling me that the page had no restrictions, but apparently no one else could see it. This problem may have been fixed in our recent upgrade, although I've just gotten used to the workaround we found (adding another restriction and then removing it). FWIW, we prefer Confluence for documentation-centric intranets. Cary On Thu, Jun 9, 2011 at 10:57 AM, Cary Gordon wrote: > We have been building Drupal sites for libraries for the last six > years. Re: [CODE4LIB] Same CMS for both Intranet and Public websites?
It's generally a bad idea to bundle them together in the same package (e.g. the same Drupal installation), but it's probably wise to use the same CMS to minimize overhead (technical, training, etc). With that said, I implemented both on the same installation. It's a nightmare in the long run (particularly securing uploaded files, ensuring SSL for the intranet, restricting access to intranet to certain IP range, updating the intranet without disrupting the public website, etc), but it's the most easy to get up to speed (all you have to do is create a new content type and restrict read/write access to specific roles). Hi, for the public website we are using Silverstripe CMS. It seems easy to learn how to edit and organize content for whom never use a CMS. The framework for developing isn't so friendly, but there's a good community where ask, modules, widgets and themes. For the intranet, our ILS have a sort of wiki inside that allow easy messaging and file sharing. But, personally, I prefer a real wiki (like dokuWiki). Re: [CODE4LIB] Same CMS for both Intranet and Public websites?
We use Drupal for our public website and an internal wiki (MediaWiki) for our intranet. We selected Drupal for some obvious reasons. You don't need to code, you can use the internal editor within the page to make changes, and there's no need to connect to the server via FTP or shell. MediaWiki was selected because we manage a lot of internal documents. I personally installed both systems, and I didn't want to use the same system for two different purposes. I felt like that would confuse a lot of users (myself included). I hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions. We have been building Drupal sites for libraries for the last six years. We have done public facing and intranet sites, sometimes as a single package, but more often as separate systems. The decision is based on your needs, not the tool. That said, I would suggest that you use the same tool for both, so that you can consolidate system administration and maintenance. Modern CMSs are flexible enough to handle a wide range of requirements. Re: [CODE4LIB] Same CMS for both Intranet and Public websites?
While we don't use it for precisely this scenario, it would be pretty simple to implement. We use Cascade from Hannon Hill. It was the tool that best fit our model of web site management (aka complete chaos). I was involved in selecting Cascade, so if you want to know more about that just hit me up off-list. The "wins": Publishes static files, so the CMS isn't the web server LDAP Auth Template system allowing for easy site creation while still maintaining control over the page structure. Multiple publishing targets (pushes over SFTP) The "fails": It doesn't magically update your content based on what you're thinking that day.
