Re: [collectd] Collectd writing to Zabbix

2013-02-05 Thread Brett Hawn
The goal in my case is to not 'double dip' when polling systems and
applications where there is a shared need/desire for specific data points.
We are making a clear and specific decision to keep our long term metrics
system separate from our monitoring system, while symbiotic in nature, they
server very different purposes and are designed towards those goals.

I'm not aware of any such plugin, nor of anybody working on one.

I'm sure that'll find some users. Bridges between tools that do similar
stuff are kind of a niche project, but there is similar code already for

I've seen the pull request on Github [*]. Thanks!

Hi Dan,

thanks for the patch! I've applied it to collectd-4.10 as

[collectd] collected 4.10.1 stops writing and high CPU

2013-02-05 Thread Jesse Reynolds
Hello

We have a collectd server that is writing to about 24,000 RRD files, most of
which are 15 MB each (with some at 30 MB and some at 45 MB), about 480 GB of
RRD files in all.

On occasion we are seeing disk writes drop right down to a trickle, and at the
same time collectd's CPU shooting through the roof. Once collectd goes into
this state it can be like this for hours, and the RRD files are mostly not
being updated in this time. The only way to get things going again is to 'kill
-9 ' and start collectd again.

The RRD files for data originating within this instance of collectd (and not
coming via the network plugin) are not interrupted, so it is something to do
with the network plugin, it seems.

Has anyone got any advice on how we might chase this problem down further? We
are on Ubuntu 12.04.

Is it possible to peer into collectd to see if it's a problem with the network
plugin, or the rrd plugin, or something else?

Thank you
Jesse

[collectd] Collectd writing to Zabbix

2013-02-05 Thread Brett Hawn
Greetings,

Before I sit down and write something, I'm wondering if anyone has built
a module to have collectd send information to a Zabbix installation. While
Zabbix provides a number of probes and such, in my particular case we are
using Collectd to gather long term data for our metrics system and Zabbix
for short term monitoring, as such there is significant overlap in the
types of data we're looking for and are working on ways to cut down on the
'double dipping' as it were. Additionally there are pieces of data I'm
gathering via various extensions I've written for Collectd that we'd like
to bring into Zabbix for monitoring purposes.

Assuming nobody has done so, would anyone be interested if I were to
write a module for writing to Zabbix (I'm also nearly ready to submit a
module for writing to TSDB if anyone has interest in that).
