CASSANDRA-2433 makes it so that nodetool repair will fail if a node
participating to repair dies before completing his part of the repair. This
handles most of the situation where repair was previously hanging, but repair
can still hang if an unexpected error occurs during either the merkle tree
creation (an on-disk corruption triggers an IOError say) or during streaming
(though I'm not sure what could make streaming failed outside of 'one of the
 node died' (besides a bug)).

[jira] [Commented] (CASSANDRA-4603) use Map internally in schema_ tables where appropriate

2013-03-11 Thread Sylvain Lebresne (JIRA)

 ]

Sylvain Lebresne commented on CASSANDRA-4603:
-

The main problem I see here is that migrating the schema format without
breaking rolling upgrades is hard. Basically, we can add new properties or new
schema tables, bu since the schema is distributed amongst all nodes, you can't
remove/modify a property easily because old node won't know about the new
version.

Meaning that for this issue, for each property that we need to change
(including the whole schema_keyspaces table), I see 2 possibilities:
# either add a separate version (with a new name) but still maintain the old
property/table on new nodes at least until 2.0 (or at least until all nodes
are updated, but relying on such condition sounds fragile to me).
# Special case the serialization/deserialization of schema messages to take the
node version we receive/send to into account. Meaning that 2.0 node would use
proper collections, but when sending it to 1.1 nodes, it would serialize it as
a json (kind of like we did for super columns).

None are fun, but I think 2) makes more sense.

bq. we can/should move key_aliases and column_aliases to Lists instead of
json-pseudolists

I must note that CASSANDRA-5125 actually kind of get rid of key_aliases and
column_aliases. The kind of is because of the problem above. So
CASSANDRA-5125 continues to maintain these 2 properties in the schema, but
don't use them anymore. Meaning, we'd be able to remove them in 2.1 provided we
formalize that 2.0 is a mandatory stop before upgrading to 2.1+.

[jira] [Created] (CASSANDRA-5329) Repair -pr with vnodes incompatibilty

2013-03-11 Thread julien campan (JIRA)
julien campan created CASSANDRA-5329:

Summary: Repair -pr with vnodes incompatibilty
 Key: CASSANDRA-5329
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-5329
 Project: Cassandra
  Issue Type: Bug
Affects Versions: 1.2.2
Reporter: julien campan

Hi,

I have a cluster on 1.2.2 .

This cluster is composed of 16 nodes in two datacenters (8 and 8) with an RF 3
:3.

I used virtual nodes, 256 on each node.

When I do “repair –pr on a node, I can see that it’s doing repair only on the
first vnode :

[2013-03-07 14:42:56,922] Starting repair command #7, repairing 1 ranges for
keyspace pns_fr

[2013-03-07 14:42:57,835] Repair session eb38dfa0-872c-11e2-af2d-f36fae36bab1
for range (-9064588501660224828,-9063047458265491057] finished

[2013-03-07 14:42:57,835] Repair command #7 finished

[2013-03-07 14:42:57,852] Starting repair command #8, repairing 1 ranges for
keyspace hbxtest

[2013-03-07 14:42:59,307] Repair session ebc6c7c0-872c-11e2-af2d-f36fae36bab1
for range (-9064588501660224828,-9063047458265491057] finished

So if I understand well, when I do a repair –pr on each node, I will repair
only the first vnode on each node. (16 token ranges on 4096 ranges).

This method doesn’t guarantee the consistency of the dataset.

It seems to me that the repair –pr is not compatible with vnode cluster.

bq. I think it would be ok to just get rid of ASSUME altogether in 2.0.

+1. Let's close this and open a new ticket for that.

cqlsh: ASSUME should also change how values are sent to cassandra
 -

 Key: CASSANDRA-3799
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-3799
 Project: Cassandra
  Issue Type: New Feature
  Components: Tools
Affects Versions: 1.0.3
Reporter: paul cannon
Assignee: Aleksey Yeschenko
Priority: Minor
  Labels: cqlsh

cqlsh's ASSUME command currently only changes how query *return* values are
deserialized, and never transforms user CQL text before sending to Cassandra.
Apparently cassandra-cli also changes how values are interpreted and
marshaled for Cassandra, so user expectation is that cqlsh should also do
 this.

 Attachments: 3534.txt

Seems like when these thresholds are reached we are trying to reduce the
keycache and Memtable sizes, but in the trunk memtable is moved off-heap
hence reducing that will not actually help.
Reducing the keycache might help but we might want to provide a way to bring
the cache level back to the configured value when the pressure goes away.
Conversation from IRC: we might want to remove these setting all together
 after global keycache.

I second this, we see exactly the same behaviour.

 Repair -pr with vnodes incompatibilty
 -

 Key: CASSANDRA-5329
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-5329
 Project: Cassandra
  Issue Type: Bug
Affects Versions: 1.2.2
Reporter: julien campan

 Hi,
 I have a cluster on 1.2.2 .
This cluster is composed of 16 nodes in two datacenters (8 and 8) with an RF
 3 :3.
I used virtual nodes, 256 on each node.
When I do “repair –pr on a node, I can see that it’s doing repair only on
 the first vnode :
[2013-03-07 14:42:56,922] Starting repair command #7, repairing 1 ranges for
 keyspace pns_fr
 [2013-03-07 14:42:57,835] Repair session eb38dfa0-872c-11e2-af2d-f36fae36bab1
 for range (-9064588501660224828,-9063047458265491057] finished
 [2013-03-07 14:42:57,835] Repair command #7 finished
[2013-03-07 14:42:57,852] Starting repair command #8, repairing 1 ranges for
 keyspace hbxtest
 [2013-03-07 14:42:59,307] Repair session ebc6c7c0-872c-11e2-af2d-f36fae36bab1
 for range (-9064588501660224828,-9063047458265491057] finished
So if I understand well, when I do a repair –pr on each node, I will
repair only the first vnode on each node. (16 token ranges on 4096 ranges).
This method doesn’t guarantee the consistency of the dataset.
It seems to me that the repair –pr is not compatible with vnode cluster.

Attachment: 0002-CASSANDRA-5228-add-a-nodetool-command-that-drops-ent.patch

adds a nodetool command to expire entire sstables if ttl has expired (and
maxtimestamp is less than mintimestamp of all other sstables)

applies on top of the v3 track max timestamp patch.

unsure if doing this as a nodetool command is the right way, suggestions where
to put if not as a nodetool command it are welcome

Marcus Eriksson edited comment on CASSANDRA-5228 at 3/11/13 3:22 PM:
-

adds a nodetool command to expire entire sstables if ttl has expired (and
maxtimestamp is less than mintimestamp of all other sstables)

applies on top of the v3 track max local deletiontime patch.

unsure if doing this as a nodetool command is the right way, suggestions where
to put if not as a nodetool command it are welcome

It would be nice to be able to throw away entire sstables worth of data when
we know that it's all expired.

SchemaLoader does its thing @BeforeClass and @AfterClass, should ideally be
done @Before and @After - otherwise tests will se leftovers from earlier unit
tests

guessing this caused most of the issues in CASSANDRA-5315

Now that we have blobAsX and xAsBlob conversion functions for all the Cassandra

Resolution: Not A Problem

cqlsh: ASSUME should also change how values are sent to cassandra
 -

 Key: CASSANDRA-3799
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-3799
 Project: Cassandra
  Issue Type: New Feature
  Components: Tools
Affects Versions: 1.0.3
Reporter: paul cannon
Assignee: Aleksey Yeschenko
Priority: Minor
  Labels: cqlsh

cqlsh's ASSUME command currently only changes how query *return* values are
deserialized, and never transforms user CQL text before sending to Cassandra.
Apparently cassandra-cli also changes how values are interpreted and
marshaled for Cassandra, so user expectation is that cqlsh should also do
 this.

[jira] [Created] (CASSANDRA-5332) 1.2.2 Nodetool reports 1.1.6 nodes as down

Cassandra 1.2.2 and 1.1.6
Reporter: Arya Goudarzi

During exercise of a rolling upgrade from 1.1.6 to 1.2.2, I upgraded one node
from 1.1.6 to 1.2.2 today. It appears that node running 1.2.2 reports nodes in
1.1.6 as Down in nodetool. This means that the nodes running 1.1.6 see all
other nodes including 1.2.2 as Up. Here is the ring and gossip from nodes with
1.1.6 for example. 231.121 is the upgraded node:

 Project: Cassandra
  Issue Type: Bug
 Environment: Sun Java 6_u39
 Ubuntu 10.04.1
 Cassandra 1.2.2 and 1.1.6
Reporter: Arya Goudarzi

During exercise of a rolling upgrade from 1.1.6 to 1.2.2, I upgraded one node
from 1.1.6 to 1.2.2 today. It appears that node running 1.2.2 reports nodes
in 1.1.6 as Down in nodetool. This means that the nodes running 1.1.6 see all
other nodes including 1.2.2 as Up. Here is the ring and gossip from nodes
with 1.1.6 for example. 231.121 is the upgraded node:

[jira] [Created] (CASSANDRA-5333) dynamic snitch only worked for NetworkTopology due to RemoteNode

2013-03-11 Thread Dean Hiller (JIRA)
Dean Hiller created CASSANDRA-5333:
--

Summary: dynamic snitch only worked for NetworkTopology due to
RemoteNode
 Key: CASSANDRA-5333
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-5333
 Project: Cassandra
  Issue Type: Bug
Affects Versions: 1.2.2
Environment: redhat linux. we dug into the code though and it appears
to be the way it is coded. we were told to file a ticket for this on the email
list.
Reporter: Dean Hiller

We dug into cassandra code and found out SimpleSnitch was not working with
DynamicSnitch. Specifically, the code turns a slow node into a remote node and
network topology works with that. We also had to move to LOCAL_QUOROM and
finally we have dynamic snitch working. To test this, we basically told the
NIC using the tc command to slow every packet down by 500ms on node 2 (out of
4 nodes). We finally have a blazingly fast client with node 2 slowed down. If
we do QUOROM, the issue comes back and the client is slow again. Same with
SimpleSnitch. To reproduce, run a 4 node cluster and use tc to give every
packet a slowdown of 500ms.

Yuki Morishita commented on CASSANDRA-5202:
---

First try for random CF Id for trunk:
https://github.com/yukim/cassandra/commits/5202-3

I added 'cf_id' column to schema_columnfamilies to track current CF Id so I
made this patch to trunk. I think this should work on 1.2 branch though.
I still need to work on loading saved key cache, because when opening files
like saved key caches, those would have the CF ID at the time of opening
because right now only keyspace and column family names are available. Same
thing can be said to SSTables.
I think it is better to store CF ID along with the files so that we can
determine which version those files are written. But I'dont want to embed UUID
cfId to file name.

I'm considering to modify file format, so that saved key cache has CF ID in its
header. But for SSTables, I don't have better way to embed CF ID.

 AssertionError in the backend: DecoratedKey(-1, ) != DecoratedKey(x, y) ...
while querying data after bulk insert - 1M rows with 100 columns. Also
 failure to drop column families

 6. Queries these 2 column families

 Repair -pr with vnodes incompatibilty
 -

 Key: CASSANDRA-5329
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-5329
 Project: Cassandra
  Issue Type: Bug
Affects Versions: 1.2.2
Reporter: julien campan
Assignee: Yuki Morishita

 Hi,
 I have a cluster on 1.2.2 .
This cluster is composed of 16 nodes in two datacenters (8 and 8) with an RF
 3 :3.
I used virtual nodes, 256 on each node.
When I do “repair –pr on a node, I can see that it’s doing repair only on
 the first vnode :
[2013-03-07 14:42:56,922] Starting repair command #7, repairing 1 ranges for
 keyspace pns_fr
 [2013-03-07 14:42:57,835] Repair session eb38dfa0-872c-11e2-af2d-f36fae36bab1
 for range (-9064588501660224828,-9063047458265491057] finished
 [2013-03-07 14:42:57,835] Repair command #7 finished
[2013-03-07 14:42:57,852] Starting repair command #8, repairing 1 ranges for
 keyspace hbxtest
 [2013-03-07 14:42:59,307] Repair session ebc6c7c0-872c-11e2-af2d-f36fae36bab1
 for range (-9064588501660224828,-9063047458265491057] finished
So if I understand well, when I do a repair –pr on each node, I will
repair only the first vnode on each node. (16 token ranges on 4096 ranges).
This method doesn’t guarantee the consistency of the dataset.
It seems to me that the repair –pr is not compatible with vnode cluster.

cqlsh COPY is quoting values when it shouldn't, and that's throwing IRE in

Brandon Williams commented on CASSANDRA-5333:

Care to say where in the code the issue is, since you dug in?

dynamic snitch only worked for NetworkTopology due to RemoteNode

 Key: CASSANDRA-5333
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-5333
 Project: Cassandra
  Issue Type: Bug
Affects Versions: 1.2.2
Environment: redhat linux. we dug into the code though and it
appears to be the way it is coded. we were told to file a ticket for this on
 the email list.
Reporter: Dean Hiller
  Labels: snitch

We dug into cassandra code and found out SimpleSnitch was not working with
DynamicSnitch. Specifically, the code turns a slow node into a remote node
and network topology works with that. We also had to move to LOCAL_QUOROM
and finally we have dynamic snitch working. To test this, we basically told
the NIC using the tc command to slow every packet down by 500ms on node 2
(out of 4 nodes). We finally have a blazingly fast client with node 2 slowed
down. If we do QUOROM, the issue comes back and the client is slow again.
Same with SimpleSnitch. To reproduce, run a 4 node cluster and use tc to
give every packet a slowdown of 500ms.

When one node in the cluster is not able to talk to the other DC/RAC due to
firewall or network related issue (StorageProxy calls fail), and the nodes
are NOT marked down because at least one node in the cluster can talk to the
other DC/RAC, we get timeoutException instead of throwing a
 unavailableException.
 The problem with this:
 1) It is hard to monitor/identify these errors.
 2) It is hard to diffrentiate from the client if the node being bad vs a bad
 query.
 3) when this issue happens we have to wait for at-least the RPC timeout time
to know that the query wont succeed.
Possible Solution: when marking a node down we might want to check if the
node is actually alive by trying to communicate to it? So we can be sure that
 the node is actually alive.

 Repair -pr with vnodes incompatibilty

 Key: CASSANDRA-5329
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-5329
 Project: Cassandra
  Issue Type: Bug
Affects Versions: 1.2.2
Reporter: julien campan
Assignee: Yuki Morishita
 Fix For: 1.2.3

 Attachments: 5329.txt

 Hi,
 I have a cluster on 1.2.2 .
This cluster is composed of 16 nodes in two datacenters (8 and 8) with an RF
 3 :3.
I used virtual nodes, 256 on each node.
When I do “repair –pr on a node, I can see that it’s doing repair only on
 the first vnode :
[2013-03-07 14:42:56,922] Starting repair command #7, repairing 1 ranges for
 keyspace pns_fr
 [2013-03-07 14:42:57,835] Repair session eb38dfa0-872c-11e2-af2d-f36fae36bab1
 for range (-9064588501660224828,-9063047458265491057] finished
 [2013-03-07 14:42:57,835] Repair command #7 finished
[2013-03-07 14:42:57,852] Starting repair command #8, repairing 1 ranges for
 keyspace hbxtest
 [2013-03-07 14:42:59,307] Repair session ebc6c7c0-872c-11e2-af2d-f36fae36bab1
 for range (-9064588501660224828,-9063047458265491057] finished
So if I understand well, when I do a repair –pr on each node, I will
repair only the first vnode on each node. (16 token ranges on 4096 ranges).
This method doesn’t guarantee the consistency of the dataset.
It seems to me that the repair –pr is not compatible with vnode cluster.

[jira] [Commented] (CASSANDRA-5314) Replaying old batches can 'undo' deletes

Jonathan Ellis commented on CASSANDRA-5314:

Hmm, this is tricky: as you say, we don't want to undo more-recent deletes, but
we also don't want to discard other rows in the batch, or even the row with low
gcgs, that may be necessary to preserve our Atomic Batch guarantees. I.e.:
replaying the batch may be incorrect, but not replaying it may also be
incorrect.

I think the only solution is to require that gcgs be greater than the batch
timeout we use.

Replaying old batches can 'undo' deletes

 Fix For: 1.2.3

Batchlog manager does not subtract the time spent in the batchlog from hints'
ttls and this may cause undoing deletes. The attached patch fixes it.

 Summary: NullPointerException in a mixed 1.1 / 1.2 cluster
 Key: CASSANDRA-5334
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-5334
 Project: Cassandra
  Issue Type: Bug
Affects Versions: 1.1.9
Reporter: Ryan McGuire

I have a mixed version cluster consisting of two 1.1.9 nodes and one 1.2.2 node
upgraded from 1.1.9.

The upgrade works, and I don't see any problems end user problems, however I
see this exception in the logs on the non-upgraded nodes:

ccm populate -n 3
ccm start
ccm node1 stress
ccm node1 down
{code}

edit ~/.ccm/1.1.9/cluster.conf and configure cassandra_dir to point to 1.2.2

{code}
ccm node1 up
{code}

The cluster is now a mixed version, and works for user queries, but with the
exception above.

Fix the upgrade test, have it perform a 1.1-1.2 upgrade (and forget
everything else), and perhaps do some things that would be valid when the
 cluster is still mixed.
