I'm delayed in closing this out: the HTML design went live on April 26 as noted
on this thread:

The front- and back-end teams are now porting the design to Antora, and we will
publish updates on the 16066 ticket from here on out:

> This task is related to CASSANDRA-16066 (Update and rework the
> cassandra-website material to work with Antora). The goal is to update the
> front-end of the C* website (design, IA and content) to work with Antora to
> help modernize the website as discussed on the [mailing
> list|https://www.mail-archive.com/dev@cassandra.apache.org/msg15537.html].
> *Design Concepts:* A minimum of two homepage design concepts will be created
> and shared for input, which will help standardize a brand palette for C* and
> a design language for the site. This may include custom iconography and
> graphics. The chosen design language will be used to develop the remaining
> templates.
> *Template Design*: It's estimated that 7 template designs will be needed
> including the creation of several new pages:
> * Homepage template
> * Toplevel template - e.g. Community.
> * General template - Mostly textual with some images, e.g. Intro, Quickstart
> * “Library” template - A library of assets (links, downloads, logos etc)
> that are sortable by metadata, e.g Resources, or Kafka's Powered By page).
> * Blog landing template
> * Blog single template
> * Docs template
> *Website Content:* Along with new design will be a need for new or updated
> content to fit the new page layouts. The intention is to use as much as
> possible from existing content, and augment with new content where needed.
> *Template Development:* This includes the frontend development, such as any
> HTML markup to achieve designs. HTML would be crafted so as to preserve any
> backend/API calls, such that content is pulled in as designed. The majority
> of the frontend work would come in the form of crafting CSS to bring the
> designs to life, plus any minor Javascript to add subtle delights to key
> pages.
> *Style Guide*: Once all is complete, a Style Guide be added to GitHub for
> contributors.
> The [cassandra-website|https://github.com/apache/cassandra-website]
> repository would need to be modified. Specific changes to be determined.

Minor typo while doing a quick browse – step 3 of the

Cross post from ML:

We are excited to share the almost-complete Cassandra website design
(CASSANDRA-16115). Huge thanks to Lorina Poland, Anthony Grosso, Mick Semb
Weaver, Josh Levy, Chris Thornett, Diogenese Topper, and a few others who
contributed to this effort.

Note: There are a few updates to be made prior to launch, but we wanted to
share to get initial input and signoff to begin the final port to Antora.

To be completed:
 * *Homepage:* The logos are placeholders -- they're being updated and resized
(pulled from case studies page).
 * *Docs* will be added once 4.0 documentation is complete. Design will match
new site.
 * *Case Studies* logos are being updated and resized, so ignore broken links.
If you have case studies or resources -- or community photos -- please reply to
me and we'll add.

Following up with the latest: the two dev teams have been meeting to explore
which direction to go and will be moving forward with Antora for the main site.
Front-end dev began week of Nov. 9 and has continued to present; and all
sub-page designs will be complete this week.

The content is complete with the exception of case studies and resources pages,
which will be gathered up until the publish date. We should have an idea of
updated go-live date likely next week.

[jira] [Commented] (CASSANDRA-16115) New Cassandra website design, content and layout to work with Antora

2020-10-26 Thread Anthony Grasso (Jira)

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-16115?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=17221037#comment-17221037

Anthony Grasso commented on CASSANDRA-16115:

Hi Melissa,
Unless I've missed something, the proposal sounds very similar to what we are
doing with Antora. As part of CASSANDRA-16066, I have started developing a
prototype which does the static content generation using Antora. Currently, it
does the following transformations:

* *Cassandra Code -> AsciiDoc* (generate AsciiDoc files using code in Cassandra
repository)
* *AsciiDoc -> HTML* (AsciiDoc files sourced from Cassandra and Cassandra
Website repositories)

In the above case AsciiDoc files are generated from the Cassandra repository.
To generate the HTML for the website Antora uses the AsciiDoc files from both
the Cassandra and the Cassandra Website repositories. The AsciiDoc files are in
a plain-text format similar to markdown.
The HTML content generated by Antora is styled using predefined HTML and
JavaScript templates. This allows for the separation of concerns highlighted in
your above proposal. To explicitly define the separation, the prototype I am
developing for the Cassandra Website repository uses the following two top
level directories:

* */cassandra-website/site-content*
* */cassandra-website/site-ui*

*site-content* directory has the AssciDoc files containing the content to be
published on the site. Any changes to wording on the website would be made to
the files in here. The content would be unrelated to a particular Cassandra
release version. All content related to a Cassandra release version e.g.
manuals, technical docs, etc would be generated from the Cassandra repository.
In this case, any changes to the technical documentation for a particular
Cassandra version would made in the Cassandra repository.

*site-ui* directory has the HTML templates and JavaScript that defines the
presentation of the content. Any website styling or behaviour changes would be
made to the files in here.
Antora's real power is being able to generate content for multiple versions of
a document. In our case we have a version of the Cassandra documentation for
each release. Hence, Antora will allow us to generate the documents for each of
these versions. Given we need Antora to create the versioned documentation, we
may as well use it for the non-versioned content as well. The reason is reduce
the the number of tools we need to perform the HTML generation. As illustrated
above we can easily split the content from the styling for the non-versioned
documentation.

Let me know if what I've written makes sense or if I've missed something
crucial in your proposal. Let's catch up off-ticket when you have time to go
through the details and if it can be made simpler?

[jira] [Commented] (CASSANDRA-16115) New Cassandra website design, content and layout to work with Antora

Melissa Logan commented on CASSANDRA-16115:
---

As the team dug into using Antora for the main website (in addition to docs),
it became clear that it would be far simpler to use a static site generator
(SSG) to vastly reduce complexity. Captured thoughts about the recommendation
below and would appreciate feedback. Flagging in particular for [~mck],
[~polandll], [~Anthony Grasso].

Recommendation

Since one of the benefits of a static site generator (SSG) is that content
folks can manage content with markdown instead of HTML, we looked at *markdown
-> HTML* parsers and found some popular Github repos.

The attached files use one called “Marked”. In order to run the attached files,
you need a local server running on your computer (since the index.html file
needs to fetch the test.md file). For folks who don’t have a local server or
aren’t familiar with running one, you can also view the link below.

The link itself conveys very simply what the attached files do: namely, all
content would be added to the “test.md” file, while all the HTML/JS would be
done in the .html file for layout, interactions, etc. This allows for a
separation of concerns so developers can modify layout/interaction in the .html
files, while content folks can do their thing in the .md file, just like how
Antora/Jekyll work (but without the large overhead/complexity those SSR
platforms bring).

One illustration of how it could work is that the homepage would have a
corresponding .md file for each section. The homepage-hero.md file, for
example, would have all content that appears at the top of the page. The “What
is Apache Cassandra” section with the nine icons would be another markdown file
where content could be modified.

The idea of having separate files is for to better separate what markdown needs
to be parsed for what section.

Done this way, we eliminate the setup, overhead, complexity, and build
processes that SSGs require. We instead would simply have .html files the
developers work with, and .md files the content folks work with.

If needed, we can stand up a simple remote server (like
[cassandra.traverstodd.com|http://cassandra.traverstodd.com/]) where we’d push
these two attached files, so that it can be seen in action.

bq. Cloud Native was suggested based on the recent Usage Report (as was the
term Hybrid), but there's only "lorem ipsum" copy there now, so your note on
caveat is helpful.

Makes sense, thanks for the follow-up.

bq. Elastic is what's currently listed on the site today. We will submit a PR
to suggest a change to Scalable, and will update in the new site content doc.

oh that's right. we already have a "Scalable" highlight, but I think the
current text of "Elastic" fits "Scalable better. And the current "Scalable"
text could move to a new highlight, "Trusted" or something along these lines:
* Scalable: Read and write throughput both increase linearly as new machines
are added, with no downtime or interruption to applications.
* Trusted: Some of the largest production deployments include Apple's, with
over 75,000 nodes storing over 10 PB of data, Netflix (2,500 nodes, 420 TB,
over 1 trillion requests per day), Chinese search engine Easou (270 nodes, 300
TB, over 800 million requests per day), and eBay (over 100 nodes, 250 TB).

Much appreciated, [~pauloricardomg].

Correct, the content in the concept designs is not final. Cloud Native was
suggested based on the recent Usage Report (as was the term Hybrid), but

Elastic is what's currently listed on the site today. We will submit a PR to

We'll put forward the doc for input this week.

Thanks for putting this together [~mklogan]. I added some comments about the
design proposals on the doodle.

I'm not sure we're discussing content yet but I wanted to bike-shed a bit on
the claims presented in the design proposals that Cassandra is "Elastic" and
"Cloud-Native".

The current description of "Elastic" (Read and Write throughput both increase
linearly as new machines are added..) is actually the definition of "Scalable".
[Elasticity|https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elasticity_(cloud_computing)] is "the
degree to which a system is able to adapt to workload changes by provisioning
and de-provisioning resources in an autonomic manner" and as far as I
understand Cassandra does not provide this functionality.

Regarding [Cloud-Native|https://github.com/cncf/toc/blob/master/DEFINITION.md]
I believe this will be true once we have an official Kubernetes operator, but
meanwhile this is a functionality provided by third-parties. If we want to keep
it maybe we should add an asterisk with this caveat.

bq. 2.2 was not a "real" release

https://cassandra.apache.org/download/ seems to disagree.

bq. I doubt there is anyone using 2.2

Not sure why this would be the case - it's still an actively downloadable and
supported release.

3.0 because 3.0 was late to release. It would be interesting to survey, but I
doubt there is anyone using 2.2.

Got it, thanks [~polandll].

Will defer to others on dispensing with 2.2. Anyone?

Community should have nested under it:
 * Contributing code (contributions?)
 * Third-party tools and companies

Download and Versions should have nested under it:

- each version (2.1, 3.0, 3.x) (can we dispense with 2.2?)
