At last, we have a completely clean (as in perfect) Java 8 CircleCI run
[here|https://app.circleci.com/pipelines/github/maedhroz/cassandra/243/workflows/cf0eae87-1fd9-4d53-9b6e-40337e442287].

The Java 11 CircleCI run
[here|https://app.circleci.com/pipelines/github/maedhroz/cassandra/243/workflows/9704441e-e9d0-4263-b9b7-00d8b611ad3f]
is also mostly clean but for a.) a few errors that also appear in ci-cassandra
trunk ({{TopologyChangeTest}}, {{IPMembershipTest}}), b.) errors that don't
appear in ci-cassandra or J8 ({{SASIIndexTest}}, {{TTLTest}}) and c.) an error
in {{SinglePartitionSliceCommandTest}} that we've also just seen in
CASSANDRA-16471 and isn't related to this patch. The one error in the J11 run
that will need it's own Jira is
{{HintedHandoffAddRemoveNodesTest.shouldStreamHintsDuringDecommission}}, which
I've described
[above|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-16181?focusedCommentId=17293329&page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-17293329].

The ci-cassandra run's failures are mostly active trunk failures. The ones that
don't show up on the latest trunk run are:

- {{TestGossipingPropertyFileSnitch}} - already covered by CASSANDRA-13196
- {{TestConsistency}} - only fails in ci-cassandra (not Circle for 8 or 11),
passes locally, unexpected log message doesn't seem to have anything to do with
this patch

These don't fail locally (regular and cdc runs) or on CircleCI, so I'm not sure
what to make of them. Still, very likely unrelated.
- testQueueOnValidationSubmission-cdc – ValidationExecutorTest
- testRejectWhenPoolFullStrategy-cdc – ActiveRepairServiceTest
- testTrucationReleasesLogSpace-cdc – BinLogTest

Overall, I'm not seeing anything here that warrants holding up commit. Thoughts?

Leaving aside for a second the Python dtest issues, there are a few failures,
but none seem related to this patch or reproduce locally, with the exception of
[CASTest|https://app.circleci.com/pipelines/github/maedhroz/cassandra/242/workflows/a89462f7-e3b2-4698-9f8d-1f8365a746d8/jobs/1405],
which seems to fail even on trunk. The others are
[here|https://app.circleci.com/pipelines/github/maedhroz/cassandra/242/workflows/a89462f7-e3b2-4698-9f8d-1f8365a746d8/jobs/1410]

{{CASTest}} is a little worrying in general, and might need its own Jira.

In the meantime, we'll get an updated picture of the tests

Looking through the actual logs for {{shouldStreamHintsDuringDecomission}}, the
migration coordinator from one of the nodes is trying to submit a schema pull
on the MIGRATION stage, but it doesn't actually check to see if the stage
executor is shut down, and it might be as a result of the decommission.
({{StorageService#decommission()}} shuts down all the stage executors.)

This looks like a general issue with pool shutdown order during a decommission.
[~e.dimitrova] [~adelapena] If this makes sense to you, I think the best option
here would be to create a separate Jira where we can make sure
{{ScheduledExecutors.nonPeriodicTasks}} is shut down in
{{StorageService#decommission()}} finalization, just like it is in
{{StorageService#drain()}}. Assuming, of course, that we do that before we call
{{Stage.shutdownNow()}}, it shouldn't be possible for a delayed schema pull to
sneak onto an already-closed MIGRATION stage executor.

The new upgrade tests for logged/unlogged batches look good to me.

[~adelapena] I've added three new commits shoring up our coverage of logged and
unlogged batches. Along the way, I had to do some surgery on the way the in-JVM
framework serializes messages, so we'll have to work out whether [what I've
done|https://github.com/apache/cassandra/pull/821/commits/a715388a1c7029f5a76e0061715856fe1c3bb391#diff-321b52220c5bd0aaadf275a845143eb208c889c2696ba0d48a5fc880551131d8R313-R333]
 there is clean enough.

includes {{TestBatch}} on the Python dtest side, and then {{BatchTest}},

[~adelapena] Logged and unlogged batches both feel like they should be dealt
with in this Jira, and I had missed them in my initial draft. I'll be auditing
those and hopefully posting something by the end of this week (or at worst,
early next week). My early assessment is that there are some holes around
testing batches through 3.0 -> 3.11 -> 4.0 upgrades.

[~adelapena] I think I've gotten to the point of diminishing returns on the
summary doc, so take a look when you have a chance. Aside from some minor
filling out of some of the unit tests, I think the biggest thing I'd want to do
outside of CASSANDRA-16262 is creating a more comprehensive upgrade test along
the lines of what you did for the mixed mode read repair tests and "scenario
modeled" after {{TestReplication}} in {{replication_test.py}}. It probably
won't be too hard to dynamically execute local reads across a fairly small
dataset to verify that things are being replicated to the right places.

WDYT?
