Michael Semb Wever commented on CASSANDRA-17351:

The pbr broke how the ccm script was installed. pbr is still used, but the way
the ccm script is installed is reverting to the existing approach.
(Thanks [~beobal] for the investigation and fix.)

Committed to ccm as
[dad2e4c|https://github.com/riptano/ccm/commit/dad2e4cd599b01170fc4820c5583aa54189504a7]
and cassandra-test retagged. ci-cassandra.a.o main pipeline builds have been
kicked off again.

Was this Travis failure considered?

[https://app.travis-ci.com/github/thelastpickle/ccm/jobs/562195433] Also, my
guess is we need to retag after committing this work to trigger the version
change?

Otherwise, I guess we can even commit it without waiting for the trunk image
changes. They shouldn't be a stopper as they are just "cleaning" in separate. I
can do that change tomorrow for all Cassandra branches.

On my end, I confirmed with the people who maintain the drivers at the moment
that this change does not affect them. We need probably to make a new release
of ccm soon, but that is another topic for a different ticket. CC
[~absurdfarce]
{quote}While we're here, should we sync the docker images used by the various
circle jobs? I've tried a run against trunk using the {{20210929}} image for
everything, and I only see a couple of test failures (both with JIRAs already)
{quote}
I also noticed the different image. I also wanted to suggest we add "latest"
tag instead of explicit date, that's what we also do in Jenkins. This can save
us time and efforts when we build a new image to update all branches Circle CI
config. If for some reason sometimes we want to use workaround temporarily,
then we can always change to specific image by date. What do others think?

CCM isn't being updated in the container by {{pip3 install \-\-exists-action w
--upgrade \-r ~/cassandra-dtest/requirements.txt}} because although the sha
that the {{cassandra-test}} tag points at has been updated, the actual ccm
version in {{setup.py}} has not. Using the {{\-e/\-\-editable}} flag also
doesn't help beyond the short term as this causes pip to try and run a {{git
fetch \-q \-\-tags}} which will fail if there are local tags being overwritten
by remote ones. The workaround of specifying a custom dtest branch, which
includes the updated ccm in it's own {{requirements.txt}} works here because
the change to the dependency spec triggers a re-installation.

The solution is to bump the ccm version when retagging it. By doing this, pip
will do the upgrade as expected should there be changes since the container
image was built. I plan to push a change to ccm adding a {{.post1}} suffix to
the version and retagging it, at which point I expect the custom dtest/ccm
brach workaround to no longer be necessary.

Jenkins is aborting builds for me today and I suspect that is not good so I
will refrain from testing all branches there today...

Example:

Reason I found:
22:17:01 + find . -type d -name tmp -delete
22:17:01 + find /tmp -type -f -atime +3 -user jenkins -and -not -exec fuser -s
{} ; -and -delete
22:17:01 + echo clean tmp failed
22:17:01 clean tmp failed
I also found in the logs:

JENKINS-19022: warning: possible memory leak due to Git plugin usage; see:
[https://plugins.jenkins.io/git/#remove-git-plugin-buildsbybranch-builddata-script];

Alright, so the issue with cqlshlib was that even if we test only for python 3
in 4.0 and trunk, we were trying to install futures which is a backport for
Python 2.

I removed it from requirements.txt and changed pip to pip3. Now it finished
smoothly
[here|https://app.circleci.com/pipelines/github/ekaterinadimitrova2/cassandra/1391/workflows/6c82d568-7da5-46db-a676-6d52f65e52d2/jobs/9016]

We don't run cqlshlib in Circle for cassandra-3.11(where I assume no changes
are needed as we run Python 2), so to test I started in Jenkins a run
[here|https://ci-cassandra.apache.org/job/Cassandra-devbranch/1426/]

So the plan introduced stand, only with the change suggested around cqlshlib
tests for 4.0 and trunk.

I will check tomorrow how Jenkins finished and if it is fine, [~mck]  as the
most involved person with images, CI, etc I will ask you to sanity check the
approach before I do changes to all branches and push CI for all branches in
both CIs as it is time and resource consuming and I don't want to push it only
to understand that it is not what we want :)

Still running, but from what I see cqlshlib had some issue...the rest are still
running but doesn't seem to hit anything...

I just started the cqlshlib tests also with the base image [here

That's how we were doing it for J8. I will test J11 now when we will have the

I made a new base image(only pushed to my personal docker hub account now) and
I did a quick test
[here|https://app.circleci.com/pipelines/github/ekaterinadimitrova2/cassandra/1386/workflows/605e5f2d-33f4-4b33-b33b-a1069cb314c7/jobs/8968/steps]
which passed... (used the opportunity to add Java 17 so we it is available for
whoever want to play with it :) I personally do it, have some preliminary
circle config covering J8 and J17 for trunk where I clean issues)

Rebuilding now the second image and I can run full test later today to confirm
CI runs.

Changes I plan are:
 * to start using latest tag and not particular one, the way we do it in
Jenkins.
 * use the base image for the python tests as we do in Jenkins and the seconds
one for the rest of the jobs
 * update requirements.txt that we need to rebuild image when retagging CCM
until we find different solution. In my mind just the -e etc usage has changed
with newer pip3 versions, I don't have different explanation. At the same time
they lack docs on that... At least I didn't find anything meaningful for now.
Happy to be proved wrong.

Well, in Jenkins the images use latest version, but in Circle we add a tag.
Java 11 was using base image but I noticed the tag is March base image, not the
latest one (where we added lost and ended not using it but versions of packages
installed have changed I guess...). I experimented and changed Java 11 to work
with the latest available image - and now we have the same error as Java 8 as
if ccm is not pulled... Not sure that rebuilding new images will solve the
issue and I want to know what it is exactly...

bq. Wondering whether we should simply align with the way Jenkins work

Two build systems already adds its own level of complexity, so I'd like to keep
that minimized by keeping them aligned.

Alright...this is confusing...

So a few notes:
 * It seems J11 executors use the base image, J8 use the one with
dependencies... I don't know of any specific reason for this difference.

But now I ran in Circle with low resources the J11 cqlsh tests and I don't see
the config issues Only those we see when running with low resources:

https://app.circleci.com/pipelines/github/ekaterinadimitrova2/cassandra/1377/workflows/d2a2f507-0264-4fc7-8417-0759c01134b8/jobs/8878
 * Looking [here,
it seems we setup in the base image the virtual env used by CircleCI. So it
can be we cache that one, but now... I changed to new virtual env and installed
the requirements.txt packages myself in Circle config yesterday so I am lost
about that...
 * Looking at the
[cassandra_job_dsl_seed.groovy|https://github.com/apache/cassandra-builds/blob/trunk/jenkins-dsl/cassandra_job_dsl_seed.groovy],
seems to me we use the base image for everything dtest which I assume means -
python upgrade tests, dtests and cqlsh tests.

So seems to me we have two options - I _think_ probably rebuilding the second
image should solve the issue. If we opt in for that one I should probably
change what image we use everywhere in Circle config, to align J8 and J11 if
there are no obstacles.

Wondering whether we should simply align with the way Jenkins works and it
always work when we update ccm. Or... we should think the other way around
whether we can benefit of moving to the second image in Jenkins and asking
people to rebuild the image on ccm retagging?

Seems to me it is not the version. I just changed Circle CI config to mimic
Jenkins build scripts
[here|https://github.com/ekaterinadimitrova2/cassandra/commit/e0863b7f24c95788b32ed7627b6448ca3b2717b8]

Result:

We can see from the _Configure virtualenv and python Dependencies_ step that
now the versions are the same as Jenkins but there are still test failures as
if we use the old ccm...

It still fails.

CircleCI shouldn't be caching from what I see in our config... and also works
with -e and branch in my repo consistently...

I see Jenkins and Circle CI run absolutely the same command:

_pip3 install --exists-action w --upgrade -r ~/cassandra-dtest/requirements.txt_

Then in my mind the only difference is versions.

Seems to me Jenkins uses 21.2.4 for pip3 and 20.8.1 for virtualenv, but
CircleCI uses different ones - 21.0.1 for pip and 20.4.2 for virtualenv.

I see different venv used, [~mck], is this intentional?
