Slow is a little ambiguous and would hate for this to be open indefinitely. Is the scope of this ticket for the installer or normal usage? Am I correct in saying some of the slowness is with newer projects when the project files have to be scanned initially and then subsequent starts will be quicker? Hi,
Thanks for the info about installer with php; I did not know this! The
installer could not find the jdk so I turned to the .zip.
Well Wednesday my computer broke... the new ssd (3 months) seemed to
function only for 9% anymore, according our computer-specialist, due to a
'wrong' cable really.. :(:(
Yesterday I had to install everything again :(:( (terrible development
environment installations, hate it!). To be sure I indeed used the installer
and jdk13 (this time netbeans could find the jdk easily).
I saw the new (very nice!!!) install-options to enable only php.

In the past I did install without importing the user-dir, indeed to be sure Netbeans started clean. But i find netbeans getting slower the last years. Say after version 8 or so. The virusscanner from windows is disabled. windows-firewall is enabled. I am a noob on the firewall, so I don't like to mess with it ;). I don't know what I can do in the netbeans.conf to finetune netbeans. I dare not mess with it ;) except the jdk-dir-setting. I have a lot of plugins disabled. It is only a minimized messages file. I copied the potential packages with a threshold >= 10ms. If you think the times inside of the file are fine then ok. Unfortunately no usable info at all on the importing settings just this info: INFO [org.netbeans.upgrade.AutoUpgrade]: Importing from C:\Users\Chrl\AppData\Roaming\NetBeans\11.1 to C:\Users\Chrl\AppData\Roaming\NetBeans\11.2 I attached my messages log while starting NetBeans with these parameters: -J-Dorg.netbeans.log.startup=print -J-Dnetbeans.logger.console=true No Windows Defender active, JDK 11.0.2 Windows 10. Will add the infos where I think they are performance problems with a freshhold >= 10ms later. In 70-80% of the tickets I see you saying: start with a fresh user dir, if that helps, fine. This is not the case in so many environments. Ok I can tell you my case which is a real world case. I installed 9.0, started fresh and installed plugins and made my settings. It took maybe 30min maybe more to set up that IDE for my needs. Now I want to download 10.0, import settings from 9.0 because I didn't do that w/o any reason. Smth breaks, now cleaning user dir and everything else from 10.0 and start new. (Why? I did that for 9.0). Ok, I do that the same for 10.0 deleting everything and using 10.0 as my daily work IDE and set it up again like 30-45min. Now I want to use 11.0 same thing... then 11.1... same thing. Does it make more sense to investigate into the problem and not saying use a fresh dir, again and again? And Netbeans performs indeed nicely, but only AFTER a very slow install. I noticed the following: * importing the userdir from 11.1 took more then 10 minutes. I thought it was hanging/crashed, but in explorer i saw the new user-dir growing * when starting netbeans, it started with a new background scanning of the projects. For our framework-project and 5 normal projects it took more then 20 minutes. * memory-usage is over 60% according to win-taskmanager (at background scanning) I cán understand that it takes so long to copy the userdir. But why then does it need to do a new background scanning of the projects?? Is that not inside the (imported) user dir? Or inside the projects-dir? Maybe here things can be done to get this better. The most visible improvement is definitely coming from Jan's PR for NETBEANS-2661 speeding up the find usages and other refactoring by rewriting the BinaryForSource query. Also the NIO2 file watcher and the ArchiveRootProvider caching shall help a bit. Given there are some "Windows native" elements involved with this, and with NETBEANS-2291 with it's slowness in Linux aspect in which is seeming to be impacted by FileWatcher elements which when disabled seemed to improve performance some. I wonder if something similar possible to disabled equivalent module on Windows. Initial startup is slow but interestingly if I close nb and then restart, it starts up quickly. Windows, I believe, keeps Java in memory and likely in its warmed up state. I get a similar situation when I start up Payara w/ J1.8 inside nb 11. The first startup is slow buy subsequent restarts are fast. One possible cause is the drive type. I use an 750 GB SSD for all my work and I know that this can make a significant difference doing anything on a Win box. As NetBeans uses really lot of disk io, this is bogging down its performacne on Windows (and that's why we are not seeing it on Linux/ Mac). As 8.2 has a signed installer, it might get better scores at the sec software and that results better IO. Those calls are really slow because it is Windows.
