I don’t suppose just using a branch of NB and open all the project would be a
good use case for testing this maybe?

Sure, identify the problem, would be great. And explain something more about
that plugin, at least the name, at least the name of the plugin author, and if
the UI of something is not good, provide an issue on what the problem is and
what should be better.

The user doesn't give any about that. If he can, he will. If the UX provides
that functionality, he will use it. And this is why I use it. If the user
shouldn't do it, than the IDE should not provide it If I should not import old
settings from older instances, than the IDE shouldn't provide that feature.

The thing is that closing a project and opening another (new one) is also not
that fast, that I want to do it everytime. And NetBeans 10 has not that big
problem with it. To come to an end, I will check what I can do with that and
try to find out, what the problematic problem is or not. If I can't find any,
we need to talk about another solution. Yes NetBeans has project groups, but
the UI is not good. There is a plugin for this, which makes it better and I
used it a lot, but the code is not available anymore, so I can't fix the
problem with it and the original developer is not availalbe anymore (wrote a
lot of mails, w/o any response).

Fast googling:

want to show you that my case is not a corner case. Here is another example and
it is NetBeans:

[jira] [Commented] (NETBEANS-2525) Background Scanning Process for first NetBeans start took more than 15min

Thx for the explanation, but the last thing is really not right at all. Every
IDE provides this functionality nowadays. Visual Studio (Not VS Code) has this
also that you can have a solution with lots of projects in it. Like a Maveen
multi module project. As often commented and a lot of other people gives me the
same thing, that they opened far more projects than me and they have no
problems. Sure, this is logic that with lots of projects (a car with lots of
people) the IDE (car) will be slow and has not enough power, but we are talking
about projects with I dont know 1 files and maybe 100 projects open at the
same time and not 30. This shouldn't be a problem. And again, others have not
that such problem than me with more projects.

Anyway I will provide as much data as possible and I will try to identify where
this problem comes. At the end, NetBeans provides this functionality to open
multiple projects so it should handle the projects as fast as possible. We are
not talking about rocket science. Will do my best, thx for the hints.

Sure, all data is useful. When you look in your messages.log, you'll see that
there's lot of parsing of multiple projects going on. It's always going to be
the same thing with any device -- e.g., a car: if you put 50 people into a car,
that's going to be less optimal than having 5 people in a car. But if one of
those 50 is extra special in some way (e.g., extra large), that would be useful
to know about when debugging the problem. But, really, a car shouldn't have
more than about 5 people and NetBeans shouldn't have more than about 5 projects
open at the same time.

The thing is, I provided valid data with dumps (heap dump, thread dump,
messages.log, ui.gestures, etc.) and you can't see anything problematic in
those data that you (not you in person but any who want those data) requested?

No, it's not about what is an option in the end. It is about identifying what
the problem is. Let's identify what the problem is -- yes, find out whether it
is a specific project, find out whether it makes a difference whether you open
many projects or only a few projects, do anything you like -- all we are trying
to do here is find out what the problem is. Then we can work on a solution, not
before.

Yeah, how? Only saying it is now only 10min instead of 15min or do you got
information out from the threaddump? What is your intention behind that? Can
you see smth bad inside of the dumps or not? If not, I will only measure time
now.

Windows Defender can be disabled via the "Edit Group Policy" app, with the
setting Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->Windows
Components->Windows Defender Antivirus->Turn off Windows Defender Antivirus.

Again, not a general recommendation or solution, just if you want to try it as
a debugging step.

My guess is that Windows Defender will primarily impact small file access
performance.

I will check the proposal of [~GeertjanWielenga]. I have guess that this could
be related to HTML5 and PHP projects. Just guessing, it's a feeling, but I
don't know it. Plan is to remove my HTML5 and PHP projects and check it again.

KThis is likely a separate change relative to this but while  looking at the
earlier legacy link in my last comment, I also noticed that additional changes
with nio includes a Watcher service api which may serve similar purpose to the
masterfs Notifier I believe. See

Wondering if this could be another refactoring opportunity here as well.

That said the Path and nio also seems to handle Symbolic links a little better
so given recent symbolic link issue changes there may be more opportunities
here as well

The thing is, I can't deactivate (maybe via registry) the Virus and
Threadsafety option, because I got the message: This is managed from your

I regularly keep a similar number of projects open--multiple modules of a
NetBeans Platform application and frequently also a few modules from the
NetBeans codebase. So the use case seems realistic to me.

I'm on Windows 10, and had to debug severe performance problems with an
unrelated application (Windows Services for Linux--WSL). The solution in that
case was disabling Windows Defender. This is not something I would recommend as
a real solution, but it might be useful to try as a troubleshooting step.

A few assorted comments:

-from the messages.log:

Complete indexing of 457 source roots took: 630.217 ms (New or modified files:
14.938, Deleted files: 0) [Adding listeners took: 67 ms]

so the indexing of one file took around 42ms on average - more than I'd expect
(base on my Linux experience), but processing nearly 15000 is not going to be
free.

-while doing optimizations is good, I would not expect that by using a
different APIs we can get 10x improvements. A more likely way to significantly
improve performance is to completely avoid doing some part of the indexing.
Jaroslav's [https://github.com/apache/netbeans/pull/1123] may be one example..

Chris, could you try to narrow down if the problem is caused by a specific
project of yours? I.e., try the same procedure but then with less of the many
projects you're trying to open automatically, until you find one or two that
are resulting in the parsing going longer than for others?

What I've found is that we could update our Lucene version and might get better
performance. Also Lucene claims that using NIO backed would result better
indexing performance, unfortunately just on non-Windows Systems.

So the heapdump is in private at [~lkishalmi] if someone else wants to have it,
ask me. And here, I added a threaddump (created with VisualVM) and a
selfsampler within NetBeans 11.0.

[jira] [Commented] (NETBEANS-2525) Background Scanning Process for first NetBeans start took more than 15min

2019-05-11 Thread Eric Bresie (JIRA)

Eric Bresie commented on NETBEANS-2525:
---

I'm wondering if this has to do with the underlying way things are read in and
the File operations

I believe some of the older means of doing so with the File io apis may be a
little slower with a possible "stream" or Path based api calls way of doing so
with more recent java versions may be a possible path forward.

As I understand the flow, with basic File logic like with File listFiles() type
call, it waits to complete for all files to be loaded into memory.  So maybe
some form of stream based version to handle things as they are scanned in
instead of waiting for all files to be scanned in might help.

This may be similar to NETBEANS-2409 (which is more Windows Specific) but it
shows a pattern of slowness due to the underlying File calls which further make
calls to lower level OS specific calls (WinNTFileSystem)

Some possible approached may be present in a few similar older tickets like

I think if I've read things correctly, some aspects of this was done by caching
some of the attributes in FileObject or FileInfo classes which may still have
some underlying operations (i.e. isDirectory calls to File.isDirectory which
calls to expensive "WinNTFileSystem.getBooleanAttributes[native] type calls).
Assume after some of the first time doing so maybe some of this gets captured
in the cache but still has to do some of that up front,

For additional alternative file activities see

I did a heap dump but emi said, that there can be sensitive data, this is why I
removed it. Please give me a private drive from you, where I can send it to u.
It is zipped round about 70MB big. Yes maybe I overread it in the mailing list,
in the flood of messages. Please can you point me there of give me more steps
that I can do, that you need. Im a hardcore windows user/dev so far so willing
to help to identify the problem ;) :)

I'm really thinking that the root cause is a Java vs. Windows filesystem issue
we started to discuss in NETBEANS-2291.

We need some hard core NetBeans dev with Windows and time to inspect that
further. I'm going to write on that on the dev list, maybe it did not got the
attention needed.

BTW, if you take some perf snapshots and attach that to the issue would
definitely help.

For me yes because I often work/play in parallel and don't want to open/close
my projects over and over again. And it makes me remembering of that, what I
wanted to work on. This is my use case and as far as I discussed such topic, I
can remember a lot of other people they worked like this way too, they opened
way more projects and say: "Well I opened over 50 projects and more, and it is
still fast". So this is not a corner case. And NetBeans still has this
functionality to open multiple projects at the same time. IntelliJ added this
feature too while NetBeans still has it right from the beginning of the ara.

> Project: NetBeans
> Issue Type: Bug
> Components: ide - Performance
>Affects Versions: 11.0
> Environment: Product Version: Apache NetBeans IDE 11.0 (Build
> incubator-netbeans-release-404-on-20190319)
> Java: 11.0.2; Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM 11.0.2+9-LTS
> Runtime: Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 11.0.2+9-LTS
> System: Windows 10 version 10.0 running on amd64; Cp1252; de_DE (nb)
> User directory: C:\Users\Chrl\AppData\Roaming\NetBeans\11.0
> Cache directory: C:\Users\Chrl\AppData\Local\NetBeans\Cache\11.0
>Reporter: Christian Lenz
>Priority: Critical
> Labels: performance
>
> Steps to reproduce:
> * Open NetBeans 11.0 for the very first time
> * Choose yes to import settings from NetBeans 10.0 (No plugins, just settings)
> * After NetBeans opens, It imported 33 projects from my old NetBeans instance.
> * Install nb-javac.
> * It opens the projects.
> * Background scanning comes ups, need couple of minutes
> * Because of some HTML5 projects, Oracle JS Parser implementation installer
> comes up
> * Install Oracle JS Parser Implementation.
> * After first background scanning is finished the next one is coming up and
> takes even longer.
> * Waiting until everything is finish. Round about 15-17 min.
> I added a heap dump, created via Visual VM (In case of sensitive data, I
> removed the link, please give me a private link where I can upload it.
> No I don't want to not use importing settings. First it is possible and
> needed and second because it is not a real world case. I want my settings
> from my old IDE and all my opened projects. I don't want to import/open them
> one after one again, this is not a use case. And I don't want to make the
> settings again and again, switching to a new version. Of course it will not
> running as long as I open NetBeans w/o importing settings and opening all
> projects but again this doesn't make sense.
> My projects are:
> * 5 Maven
> * 1 PHP
> * 4 HTML5
> * 14 Ant based NetBeans modules (Some 3rd-party, some from the Core)
> * 8 Maven based NetBeans modules (all 3rd-party)
> * 1 NetBeans Module suite project
> What information do you need more? I will add the messages.log too, but I
> need to clean up my user dir again, because I opened NetBeans after the
> profiling again.

If you need more information, I'm really willing to help. For now I don't know
what to do anymore. As I mentioned, I will add the messages.log and maybe the
ui.gestures if that helps too. Let me know if yes. I will remove one project
from the projects later, because I think that it could be PHP project related.
Just guessing.

[~lkishalmi] wanted to point you up, because you know that problem. More to
say, non of the projects are gradle projects.
