There were no voices against for the latest PR and this has been tested 
extensively in multiple production deployments so I went ahead and merged PR 
4542 into trunk
This was a pretty long-standing change (back to 2016) and many people involved 
in the process.

[~xuzq_zander] has extended the latest patch with some unit tests and created 
[PR 4542|https://github.com/apache/hadoop/pull/4542].
This exposes and additional API but it should be same.
In addition, this has been tested in multiple production environments so it 
should be safe.
I'd like to get as much feedback as possible; lease take a look at the PR.
If there are no voices against, I'll go ahead and merge it by the end of the 
week.

I think this change has been pretty well validated.
In particular [^HADOOP-13144.003.patch] just adds interfaces and is innocuous.
I would rebase this, merge it, and then in HDFS-13274 we add the actual change 
and we can document all the caveats about using this.

This change has not been merged in the trunk but we have applied in our 
environment and observed the performance improvement. While when the routers 
are heavily overloaded, the routers will create too many connections against 
NameNode and the NameNode gets degraded with too many file descriptors. We have 
tuned the connection pool size (logical connections) within routers but the 
won't be able to control much on the physical connections. I have attached a 
new change which enables fine-grained configuration on the number of physical 
connections for a nameservice or for a user. With such control/connection 
sharing, we didn't observe performance degradation with connection size like 
64.

implementation of RBF.

I thinks the [^HADOOP-13144-performance.patch] is a little confusing here, 
because I came to this ticket thinking this patch would be able to improve the 
performance of RBF. If there is only [^HADOOP-13144.003.patch] , I may found 
that this patch is just a premise of HDFS-13274 earlier.

Now that we have proof that this is actually helpful, we should just do the RPC 
change and then do the Router changes in HDFS-13274.
The only part I'm not sure about which interfaces in RpcEngine and RPC we 
should extend.
Maybe just stick with the ones here.
The other question is what to do with 3.3 and 2.10.

Sorry for last comment, the bad performance was caused by some other 
configurations.

With the help of this patch, we finally managed to reduce the rpcProcessingTime

The result is not very good. With default implementation, the average 
processingTime of Routers is about 10ms, with multi connection, the average 
processingTime can get 20ms.

Do you have any other suggestions on how to reduce the proxyAvg of routers? The 
processingAvg is low, but the proxyAvg is quite high in production.

I added  [^HADOOP-13144-performance.patch] with the whole setup.
It also includes the full proposal including the Router changes.

I have to say the results are not as large as I remember and very sensitive to 
the order.
After running 20 times and excluding warm up times, we can see:
# A single Router using the old approach (single connection pool): 483.5 ms
# A single Router using multiple users: 455.2 ms
# A single Router using the new approach (multiple connections): 458.5 ms.
# Multiple Routers using the old approach: 483.5 ms.

One can see that 2 and 3 are pretty similar as one would expect from the 
analysis.
I'm a little surprised with number 4 though.

These results are not as spectacular as what I observed in HDFS-14316.
My guess is when everything is fine, there are no much different but it gets 
much worse when there are time outs.
I think in that case, Routers are stuck at creating connections and that's when 
one sees the worst impact of having just one socket factory.

I agree that adding multiple connections from same user to same server 
increases throughput of RPCs sent from client to server.

But in case of Router, overall throughput depends on the NameNode's ability of 
processing RPCs.

I assume, the verification done by [~ywskycn] contains all read RPCs calls, 
which doesn't wait for locks in NameNode and gets processed immediately. What 
if there are mixed RPCs.? then total throughput will be the same, even number 
of connections increased from client->sever.

 

If connection is the bottleneck, did you try increasing the Number of Reader 
threads at NameNode?

Even allowing multiple connections from Client also needs an increase in the 
Reader threads in the NameNode.

 

There is one more possibility for RPC requests to get blocked, if Reader 
threads in server side are busy in authenticating connections in case of 
security enabled.

HADOOP-15602 offloads the connections establishment to separate handlers, which 
in-turn increases the RPC throughput for already established connections.

[~ywskycn], Are you seeing bottleneck (without this change) in establishing 
connection? or Writing request over connection?

 

To summarize, 

My understanding is, current bottleneck for RPC throughput will be based on 
server's ability to process RPCs. By increasing number of connections, RPC will 
reach server's Queue faster, but gets processed in the same time.

Increase in throughput can be seen only if All READ RPCs are being executed in 
parallel. May be this will help Standby NameNode Reads.

We would like to have this by 3.3 as it significantly improves the performance 
of the Router.
The main change is that now connections don't need to share the connection 
factory and we can have more parallel connections.

The internal use we have is in the {{RouterRpcClient}} when creating a 
connection from the Router to the Namenode.
It looks like the following:

I'm uneasy with the entire premise of this jira.  This feature better not be 
used in the general use case.

Regardless, this has no impact on the ConnectionId cache, not that I would want 
it to.  How do you intend to use it?  Exposing and directly utilizing the 
what-should-be-private bowels of the IPC code is going to make future 
development very hard.

Thanks [~ywskycn] for trying this out; I posted [^HADOOP-13144.001.patch] with 
the fixes for compilation.
I submitted the patch so Yetus should cover the next ones.

In general, I think this is touching a pretty sensitive part of the Hadoop code 
but I think the modifications are pretty minimal.
At the same time, as [~ywskycn] pointed out, it helps dramatically with the 
performance of the Routers for HDFS.
We would open a separate JIRA for the Router connection creation if this goes 
in.

Anybody available for a review?

Thanks for the patch [~elgoiri]. I tried it yesterday and it worked well. The 
Router RPC throughput has been largely improved, and RPC handlers are not 
blocked on the connection itself. BTW, it also needs to add new function 
implementation in classed ProtobufRpcEngine and TestRPC.StoppedRpcEngine.

We see this issue in the Router as we are constrained by the number of 
connections.
The solution we internally have for this problem is to allow specifying the 
connection and the socket factory as in  [^HADOOP-13144.000.patch].

One solution is to allow each user + remote address to utilize multiple 
connection threads.  This will require reconfiguration of the Client class to 
permit a pool of connections per ConnectionId.

An alternative solution is to create multiple ConnectionIds per user + remote 
address.  The current {{ConnectionId}} class does not support multiple 
hashCodes per user + remote address.   The {{ConnectionId}} can either be 
modified or made visible (attached solution) for inheritance.

Our use case for this feature requires a single user to be able to issue a 
large number of RPC requests to a single NN via the IPC client.  Better 
throughput is required in the existing IPC client to allow up to 100k 
requests/second from the same user to the same remote address.
