That was intentional, as that's the number of nodes under the specified scope 
aka. {{innerNode.getNumOfLeaves()}}.

In [^HADOOP-15317.06.patch]I renamed it to {{totalInScopeNodes}} to make it 
more intuitive. The word 'available' is confusing, because it would need a 
definition and will collide with the last param, {{availableNodes}}. Javadoc 
also has the explanation, LMK if you have an idea on how to improve that.

[~xiaochen], patch v5 looks good. One question:
* For parameter {{numInScopeNodes}} in {{NetworkTopology#chooseRandom}} L564 we 
are passing total no of nodes in parent node including excluded nodes. If this 
is intentional than we should rename this to {{totalAvailableNodes}} and update 
its definition as well. For example in below case, we have 2 {{excludedNodes}} 
out of total 5, so {{availableNodes}} are 3. So {{numInScopeNodes}} seems to be 
3 as well as by its definition we are excluding excluded nodes. Please correct 
me if I might be missing something here.

Thanks for the review Eddy.

[^HADOOP-15317.05.patch] addressed the comments. As synced offline, the reason 
for {{lastValidNode}} is only because we're not sure what exactly caused the 
initial bug (infinite loop). Theoretically it should not happen, but this will 
give us some insights if it does happen Changed the log to error to make it 
easier to be found.

Thanks for looking at the test failures, definitely related.

[^HADOOP-15317.04.patch] to improve the first random choose logic - we need 
this random to be from all nodes, not available nodes, so it does not have 
correlation with the nthValidToReturn. (i.e. getLeaf(nthValidToReturn) won't 
provide even distribution).


 Also tuned the test logging / assertion message, in a way that it's obvious 
which node failed the assertion. It should be straightforward to search in the 
logs and find out what the exclude nodes and results are.

[~xiaochen], thanks for updating the patch. New change to handle the best case 
increases the probability of initial nodes being chosen. This results in 
sporadic failure of new test cases. This is result of bounding next int to

Thanks for the review [~ajayydv]. Comments addressed, and added a special case 
to handle _the_ best case scenario as an improvement. Notably, this may still 
end up with more iterations than the old simple stupid way, for scenarios like 
when the node would have been chosen by the 2nd random choose in old logic.

best case for #4 while maintaining equal probability of available nodes by 
checking if first random int in available leafs is excluded or not.

Discussed with [~eddyxu] about this a little bit, uploaded 
[^HADOOP-15317.02.patch]

We have several options:
 # Similar to patch 1 to use a data structure to track the choose results so we 
can terminate
 # Use a ridiculous big number like (10 * numOfDatanodes) to guarantee 
termination
 # Instead of random choosing in every loop, we only randomize the initial 
index, and then loop through every node exactly once
 # Random once to get a number N, and only choose the Nth valid node

#1 will result in potentially largest memory consumption, #2 is minimal change 
but could be the most CPU-heavy since it's just adding a termination to the 
current while loop.

#3 and #4 should be the least resource-heavy. But #3 has the problem that the 
probability of each node being chosen isn't evenly distributed. Specifically, 
the node immediately after excluded node(s) will have a higher probability of 
being chosen. Patch went with #4, whose only draw back is to make best case 
slower.

Perhaps we can have a threshold (e.g. when availableNodes > numInScopeNodes / 
2, we go with the simple stupid random loop in existing code, so #4's best case 
slowness is covered.

* Current change in do.while loop introduces a bug in case when {{if

To mitigate this we can reinitialize ret with null in else clause.
