This is what I would like to see:

  1) the ASF publishes a newsletter (following the very nice style used
in the recent Jakarta one) that covers all the ASF endevours. Including
infrastructure, licensing, security, incubation and all the
 non-so-project stuff.

  2) the newsletter is sent to announce@apache.org

  3) the newsletter is then archived on www.apache.org/newsletter/[date]

 What do you think?

Re: news.apache.org (was: apache.org vs. mozilla.org)

2003-04-07 Thread Tom Copeland

We had stumbled on the discovery that by normalizing the work so it all
happened in one place intermediated by the machine we were more
thoughtful, more efficient, more convivial, effective due to the
orthogonal skills, able to tap into bits of serendipity, able to work
with people who could be prickly in person, etc. etc. etc.

I've had this sort of experience around a Wiki. People started to refer
to the DevConfig page where we posted host names and such... everyone
knew where to go to get the current info.

One thing that would happen in that context was that NNTP threads would
often lie idle for months only to suddenly come back to life. That is
one reason it could be used for working on individual
 bugs/enhancements/ports/etc.

Yup, very Wiki-ish.

Fun stuff!

Yours,

Tom

Re: Free java profiler tools for open source projects?

2003-03-13 Thread Tom Copeland
There's a freebie profiling tool here:

http://starship.python.net/crew/garyp/jProf.html

It only works with JDK 1.2.2, though. (*)

Yours,

Tom

(*) I'm working on updating it to JDK 1.4 - there appear to have been a
couple of changes in the JVMPI since jProf was written (in '99). It's
kind of a neat project to bring up to date, because it still uses the
old XML parsers and a bunch of other outdated APIs. Fun stuff!

 Hi,

I remember a thread on 'some' ASF list about the availability of a
number of commercial tools for free, when used within open source
projects, just like the Atlassian guys currently do with Jira.

I can't find that thread anymore, so I was hoping somebody else still
remembers. More specifically, I was hoping one of the Java profiler tool
vendors like Borland is doing something similar with OptimizeIT.

Anyone who remembers that thread, or knows about some freebie Java
 profiling tool for ASF projects?

 Thanks,

 /Steven

Just in case this is the one, I've attached a patch :-).

Would [EMAIL PROTECTED] be more appropriate?

James, while the patch has already been applied for you,

 Thanks Sander!

  take a look at:

  http://cvs.apache.org/viewcvs.cgi/site/xdocs/foundation/members.xml

As a member, you have commit access.

I originally tried to apply the patch directly myself but got
 the following
message when trying to checkout the site module, so I figured
 I didn't have
karma. Do members automatically get karma to the site module or is it
switched on when you ask for it?

 jakarta cvs co site
 cvs server: Updating site
cvs server: failed to create lock directory for `/home/cvs/site'
 (/home/cvs/site/#cvs.lock): Permission denied
cvs server: failed to obtain dir lock in repository `/home/cvs/site'

someone (andy?) started a trend of setting up personal
web pages at cvs.apache.org (that being where all committers
have accounts) and i'd like to refresh the idea in everyone's
mind 'cuz i think it's a good one; help us get familiar with
 each other a bit, maybe.

just put something in cvs.apache.org:$HOME/public_html .. from
looking at it, there are almost 60 people who have at least
set up the directory, if not put useful stuff in it.
