This is interesting to see the larger ambitions of the project. It might
also help to expand upon what types of devices could be constructed with
this logic, in addition to neo1973. I'm thinking remotes, media players,
watches, etc...

Hi!

The rumours have already spread, as several bloggers have already
reported: Yesterday [subject to time zone], Monday the 5th of March
2007, OpenMoko was finally able to start the Phase 0 of the OpenMoko
Neo1973 developer programme:

The Neo1973 Phase 0 phones have been shipped!

This means that by the end of this week, there will be 36 Free Software
developers around the world with a Neo1973 in their hands :)
(Why not 50? Go on reading)

After having releaed the current source code, and development resources
such as wiki, bugzilla and mailinglists almost four weeks ago, this
Phase 0 shipment now marks the next logical step: Hardware availability.

Unfortunately the current hardware revision GTA01Bv3 still has some
issues that are fixable in post-production rework, most notably too high
standby power consumption. Due to those issues, the remaining 14
developers have chosen to rather wait until the next hardware revision.

The brave first 36 will obviously get a free fully working Neo1973 as
soon as they become available - which brings us to the second news item:

We have finalized the next revision called GTA01Bv4, which we expect to
be available in sample quantities roughly at the end of the month.
Let's hope this time we got everything right and can immediately proceed
to producing larger quantities.

In order to enable the Phase 0 developers to even literally "Open their
phone" (before freeing it by free software), we actually packaged all
the tools required for opening and disassembling it: Torx screwdriver
and guitar plectrum :)

The OpenMoko core team is sending a warm welcome to this first group of
36 developers. We're looking forward to your feedback and help!

Once again our sincere apologies for delays and further delays. We
werer striving to be above industry average - but have you ever seen
any reasonably complex hard/software project finish on time? Murphys
law applies to all of us...

Happy hacking,

Harald (for the OpenMoko Core Team)

$350 => Neo 1972 Phone, available for mass market in September-ish, or
for developers (anyone can call themselves a developer if they like) in
April-ish.

$200 => Debug board, which plugs into a $350 phone (bought separately),
only required if you need to do *really* low-level modifications or
debugging. Not required for normal application development.

This stuff is on the wiki, and in the FOSDEM video. Please come to the
mailing list better prepared from existing resources.

Ok, when will these $350 kits (== real phones with bleedy-edge
software) be available? And when these $200 kits? (Did I get it right,
it's all kind of stuff but basically a phone in a box?)

I should add _very_ rough around the edges ;-) We've just had too many
hardware delays...

I think the article must have quoted the price incorrectly. It's $200.

bluetooth on a bike

2007-03-06 Thread Marc Verwerft

Hi all,

I've been reading this list for a while and am very interested in the
Neo/Openmoko for all kinds of reasons but mostly because it's free.
The combination of bluetooth and possible GPS mapping software made me
think of the following.

I like driving on a motorcycle. Sometimes I have a passenger. It's
always nice when you can talk to each other. So the following
questions came to mind:
- if both me and my passenger have bluetooth headsets, would we be
able to talk to each other using the bluez implementation?
- would we both be able to hear music (Ogg, mp3)?
- would we be able to hear music _and_ directions from the GPS mapping
software (_and_ possibly talk to each other?)

Regards (and keep up the good work),

Marc.

2007-03-06 Thread Richard Franks

I found the section on emergence/Neoforms _very_ interesting - I've
recently been expanding upon this (
http://www.linuxtogo.org/gowiki/OpenMoko/Ideas/ConceptualFramework )
from which I've going down similar lines of thought - do you have more
ideas about Neoforms?

Re: Idea: Location based reminders

2007-03-06 Thread Jose Manrique Lopez de la Fuente

How about a category like "context based apps"?

I see the OpenMoko as a nice platform to work in Delivery Context
Interface[1] apps, or even to implement some kind of DIAL[2] solution.
OpenMoko could(/should?) be a "context" aware device. More read in
Delivery Context Overview for Device Independence [3].

[2] http://www.w3.org/TR/dial-primer/
[3] http://www.w3.org/TR/di-dco/

2007/3/6, Igor Foox <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Hi,

I just added this to the wiki:
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Wishlist:Location_based_reminders

It's a bit related to context based todo list (http://
wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Wishlist:context_based_to-do_list) but a
different type of event.
I came up with the idea today when I was working on my laptop on a
bus ride and missed my bus stop.
Any further ideas or clarifications on the idea are most welcome!
