PDA/portable keyboard that can be used with Neo1973

2007-07-09 Thread Pranav Desai

Hello All,

Does anyone have any recommendations on keyboards that can be used
with the Neo1973. bluetooth, USB, etc.
I have seen some online, but most of them seems to be compatible with
one or other type of PDA, so I am guessing a universal one would be
better for Neo1973 ..

Thanks

Today is the day that we've all been waiting for: We can finally take
your order for the world's first freed phone.

First of all, congratulations and thanks for all the hard work you guys
 put into making this happen!

I'm really itching to order an Advanced, but I've got a couple of
 questions:

 - I'm wary of entering credit card details on a site with a self-signed
SSL certificate without verification. You may already know this, but
you can get free-beer signed certificates from CAcert
(http://www.cacert.org/) in minutes with a minimal amount of hassle.
Failing that, could you at least post the certificate's fingerprints
in another medium (PGP-signed to this list would be great for example)?

 - Shipping to Europe: is there any info on how long the various options
   (WORLDWIDE_EXPEDITED/SAVER/WORLDWIDE_EXPRESS) take? There's not much
difference in the cost, but as I'll be away in GUADEC all next week
I'd like to pick an option that won't have the package bounce back to
FIC because I'm not here to collect it. (Hey, I don't suppose you can
   deliver some Neos to GUADEC?)

One guess is that these options refer to shipping options available from UPS:

http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/shipping/time/service/expedited.html
http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/shipping/time/service/worldwide_saver.html
http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/shipping/time/service/express.html

Can anyone confirm?

You've got a point there, but that is a different issue altogether - I'm
talking about if that would happen if the ads were actually useful ? I for
example routinely block flash and large banner ads, but I generally keep most
of the google ads because sometimes they actually contain something I'm
interested in. So IMHO the question is if the ads can get targeted and
interesting enough so people would actually watch them (or at least keep

Is it developer-user ready?

2007-07-09 Thread Benjamin Schieder
Hi List.

I'm new around here so please forgive me if this is the wrong list to
inquire.

I need a new phone and am almost at the point of ordering a Nea1973
now. (Hooray to you \o/)
As a Linux userspace programmer, I'm really looking forward to finally
write my own mobile phone programs. I've got experience with Garnet OS
programming and always thought about getting a Treo650 back then but
didn't have the cash.

Still, since this is going to be a _replacement_ I'd really love to
have two things possible:
1) Making and receiving calls (doh)
2) Sending and receiving short messages.
I've read on the gsmd-devel list that this is being worked on.
I've no problems with creating my own user interface to this.
   (probably will do that anyway)
3) A phone book to store my contacts in would be nice, but for now
a lack of that wouldn't be a showstopper to me.

Those things are everything I've ever used on a mobile phone since
the applications available were never useful to me. If I could write
my own apps, this would definately change (good bye trusty old Palm V).

Any insights on the above would be great. Don't have to have fancy UI
or anything, just that functionality is there to use from my own
programs is enough.

On that same note, a step-by-step guide on setting up a development
environment on my self-baked Linux system would be nice, too.
For now what I found is this:
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/OpenMoko
which doesn't make much sense to me. Will it make sense once I
installed bitbake and the rest of the software?

Thank you for your time,
  Benjamin

 Neo BaseNeo Advance
 1x 2x 3x 4x1x 2x
WORLDWIDE_EXPEDITED $71.85 $83.14 $94.15 $114.52 $104.99 $134.16
SAVER $75.19 $88.25 $100.73 $118.89 $112.08 $139.04
WORLDWIDE_EXPRESS $77.46 $90.23 $103.00 $121.73 $114.35 $142.16
WORLDWIDE_EXPRESS_PLUS $122.86 $135.63 $148.40 $167.13 $159.75 $187.56

Looks like shipping from within the EU (as promised) didn't happen yet. Will

Seems like worldwide_express is the best option for most since it's not

I ot an earlier reply that indicated local distribution will be probably

with the current shipping options and associated duties/taxes the P1 base Neo

GNU GPL license of OpenEinstein

2007-07-09 Thread Doug Parker

News from Newtontalk, www.newtontalk.net:

During the Worldwide Newton Conference in Tokyo yesterday, it was announced
that Einstein was open sourced under the GNU GPL license. Einstein is an
emulator for the Apple Newton, the grandaddy of PDAs. Ignore what you've
heard about its performance; later Newton models have reportedly the best
handwriting recognition available.

The slides are available here:

  http://kallisys.com/files/newton/Einstein/EinsteinWWNC2007Slides.pdf

You can download the source code right here:

  http://code.google.com/p/einstein/

The binaries are available for MacOS X:

  http://einstein.googlecode.com/files/EinsteinPlatform2007.7-MacOS_X.zip

Moreover, having Einstein open source already proved extremely fruitful.
Within two days, there was a working Cygwin/X11 port running on Tablet PCs
and a working Cygwin/Native GUI (with FLTK) port running the next day. The
Cygwin/X11 patches have been committed to the subversion repository (the
compilation needs to be tested) and others are expected to produce a version
compiled with Visual C++ soon.

There's also a cross-platform graphical toolkit (like Qt) that allow one to
build NewtonScript-based applications running on MacOS X, GTK, Hildon (Nokia
Internet Tablets) and of course the Newton.

Web Shop Site Problem

2007-07-09 Thread Richi Plana

Hi,

I've been having problems with the shopping site since it went online.
From https://direct.openmoko.com/, I would order the device and would
be redirected to a blank page
https://direct.openmoko.com/cgi-bin/order.cgi . I've tried it on Firefox
on linux, then on Windows and finally *shudders* Internet Explorer on
Windows. I'm both glad and disappointed to report that it worked on neither.

There was a post about someone working on it, but no details. Apparently
some have been able to order. My concern is that our (several people
have posted having the same experience) problem isn't the one being
worked on since no one has officially acknowledged it.

Could someone set our minds at ease by letting us know that they're
aware of this problem? If details of the problem were made known, the
community might even be able to help.

I've been silently waiting in the sidelines for this very moment so I
hope it's understandable that as soon as the word came out, all that
pent-up emotion just came bubbling out into expectancy. I'm just
worrying they might run out of devices.

Also I have a friend sitting now in hong kong and willing to buy this phone
for me, but shipping cost is 72$ to HK...

Apparently Europe is pretty bad regarding shipping costs. Most EU
countries
seem to be 70-100$ for the basic edition, and even compared to that I'm in
a
group who would have to pay at least 150 USD (!!!) for shipping to Europe.
That's a bit disappointing to say the least :( For 2 Neos it's cheaper to
fly
to the States and pick them up personally than have them shipped here :)

My shipping options are US$81 or US$87 for Australia for the Neo Base
and around US$117 for the Advanced - this seems a bit excessive, given
the ~US$40 you mentioned earlier...

Re: [France] Grouping orders,

I'll be interested *if* the GTA02 is to be delivered as a board only. If
not, or if you want to order before it's known whether the board-only
version will be offered, don't wait for me...

If yes, does some of you living in Paris would like to share the shipping
cost ?

there are going to be some delays in shipping...

Re: GTA02 Board only option in October?

2007-07-09 Thread Marco Barreno
I'm very excited about the Neo1973 and OpenMoko, but I can't justify
buying one now and a whole new one in October. I've decided to wait
because the WiFi is important enough to me. However, if there will be
a board-only option in October that would make a Phase I Neo + a Phase
II board not *too* much more expensive than just a Phase II Neo, then
I'd buy one right now! Any (semi-)official word on availability and
pricing of a Phase II board-only option would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Marco

Re: gmail.com problems and this list

Can someone with admin access to the list machine send me the SMTP
logs for one of the duplicated messages? I'm working in the Gmail
group at Google for the summer and I can have someone try to diagnose
the problem from this end. The full SMTP logs would be helpful.

Thanks,

didn't happen quickly enough for its liking.) Or am I missing
  something?

You're missing something. point A is origin, point B is gmail, point C
is gmail, point D is destination. From point B to point C is where
resending is happening. gmail-B keeps resending to gmail-C who then
 sends it to the destination.

I'm getting dupes from everybody sending mail via gmail. Dupes to the

Somebody on the IRC channel earlier was saying shipping is slated for the
16th.
AFAIK, ship dates have not been confirmed by anyone from FIC/OpenMoko.

Last we heard, the phones were in customs as they were being air-mailed to
California. From there, they are supposed to be distributed.
