I sympathize with you. I'm tired of finding no datasheets or worse, the
1 page "datasheet" when I go to look at potential components. I wonder
how many sales these companies have lost because someone couldn't even
tell what their component does?

The point of this post is to bring attention to the news that ATI/AMD
appears to be planning to actually release documentation, at least for
their desktop chips anyway. I've heard rumblings about this sort of
thing in the past, and always thought: "Yeah right, I'll believe it when
I see it." But it appears to actually be happening, open source 2D
drivers from ATI by the end of the year with documentation for the
community to write 3D drivers to follow.

It may be worth talking with ATI again. Since this announcement, I
don't think it is too far fetched to at least get the same deal you
currently have with SMedia. I wouldn't be surprised if the people you
were talking to had no idea this sort of thing was being planned. ATI
may even allow the release documentation at some point in the future.

I realize you are probably already aware of this, and that it is much to
late to show up in the GTA02, I just wanted to make sure you knew about
it. (and I'd love to hear about it if its on the mysterious road map)

Alternatively, the community ML traffic might have decreased because people
can now actually work on their phones, which feels infinitely better than
talking about possible work on it... increased traffic in other lists has
got to be coincidence. I dunno. Just a guess.

Darn, I must have missed Sean's announcement that the software was in
working condition when GTA01 shipped. Bummer, I could have replaced my nokia
before the neo ran out of stock.

Updating your phone might not be such a bad idea. Word has it the dialer and
a host of other things have been working well for a little while now.

IMHO it takes a long time, too long to get the feel of the build

If the build and development was possible using a Gnome IDE it would

1900 is the standard US frequency, and 850 is the non-standard. My
nearly four year old tri-band European phone Just Works (tm) on
T-Mobile which is why I got T-Mobile; it was painful having to wait
*years* for 850 versions of phones to be released in the US (which is
luckily not so much of an issue now).

What is wrong with 1900? I've never had any issues even when five
years ago in the Carolinas when the Cingular and T-Mobile coverage
areas were really crap. I suspect your phone has a bad antenna as the
tower being a few meters taller really shouldn't affect the signal
much when you can be a mile or so away.

AT&T also has a significant amount of 1900. Their entire network in
the Carolinas is 1900 at least (I know as I travel there often and I
can roam without issue and my phone does not do 850).

One cyclinder out of four? Please explain what you mean by this. If
you mean that the data transfer speeds or some such are slow becuse
you can't allocate all slots at once I think you are wrong. I am on a
GPRS connection right now, and I generally get the fully 40 k/s down
that my device is capable of except around nine p.m. or so (I'm
guessing when everyone jumps on to use their 'free' time).

How does buying a phone that is capable of running Windows mobile help
*or* hurt Microsoft? They are not getting a Windows license fee from
the hardware. Your analogy does not hold -- Microsoft gets money when
you buy a machine with Windows installed. The Neo1973 is more like
buying an os-less machine. Your conclusion that there is no market
effect does mostly hold, but at the same time there seems to be a
slight effect: the gta01 Neo1973 appears to have sold at least two
full production runs and FIC is going ahead with the production of a
second revision. A few thousand devices being sold in a month shows
that there is some demand for a real GNU/Linux running phone, does it
not?

x2x works fine (though I mainly use it mainly for sharing keyboard).
If you want the mouse to display, you'll need to change the
"-hide-cursor" option in /etc/X11/Xserver. Here's the command line I
use to share mouse/keyboard between my system and the neo:

  x2x -from trinity:0.1 -to neo1973:0.0 -south -buttonblock &

where "trinity" is my main system (multi screen) and "neo1973" points
to the neo. Also, you'll need to run "xhost +trinity" on the neo to
allow sharing. Cheers,

That number looks more like a serial of the card and not the product
number to me. I also have one from SanDisk with producz ID SDSDQ-4096-E11M

Only a few cameras have SDHC support.

Which kernel version? SDHC support was added in 2.6.21

In whatever language you can use to interface with GTK or even X itself, but
it might not look the same or offer all the moko toolkit interfaces.

Thanx for the fast replies!

Does anybody have a good howto on how to setup a sandbox env on a Fedora to
be able to write apps? I have also read that most applications is written i
GTK+, can one program in any other languages for the moko? Such as
python/perl?

I am really eager to buy a moko, but is it functional today, im living in
sweden, is it stable to call from on GSM?

Also are there any disadvantages to by a moko right now? Does the new 02
have a new design, specs so its smarter to wait?

Thanx in advance and im sorry for any stupid questions.

The next version has minor differences, improved graphics, wifi, one speaker
instead of two, different GPS chip, less hardware bugs (hopefully).

It can be programmed and upgraded the same as the current version.

GPS has not been determined, it may or may not change.

No! See

GTA01 = current
GTA02 = October version

No.
And october is unlikely.
Though we have not been given a date at which the hardware may be
purchasable. (even a 'later than November' would be of use)

The whole point of OM is that the hardware has well documented
interfaces and drivers to it.
You can run any software you like over it, and conversely, you can
install the software on any of the range of phones.

Yes, that's right. No host mode at all ATM...

It was said, that the SoC *should* support microSDHC-cards, but nobody hat

I don't know about the kernel support for SDHC at all.

I'm contemplating the latter.
The kernel does not currently support USB host - it needs a patch.

FWIW, I brought a battery powered USB hub (Cyberpower) to CCCamp 2007 for
testing it with the Neo1973, but this bit was missing, so we didn't even try it.
