You have 4 great ideas to discard or supplement the location cache:
1) CellID database inside the phone.

...or on a server, updated with contributions from many users.

Note that such database can even be used by non-GPS-capable devices (e.g.
running OpenMoko) to find their approximate location -- you can't get any
precision, but at least it gives you the city and district, enough for
tasks like finding a café nearby.

2) Power-on after a long timeout with a prompt to discard location.
3) Flight mode with no destination typing.

This one should probably also have a prompt. Software shouldn't try to be
smarter than the user.

4) Change cell network.

With (1) working, this will rarely cause loss of location; the current
location aid will rather be replaced with location data associated with
the CellID. If the new location aid doesn't contradict the previous one,
we're having a case of overlapping networks, and the previous data (more
precise) shouldn't be discarded.

Each of these sparks additional ideas and opportunities for improving
autonomous GPS:
- invalidate location cache from sort of travel manager application
that knows you're flying because of schedule, change of timezone,
invoking flight mode, etc. Could tie into the airport destination
planning to get a rental car, directions, local information, etc.

Could be useful, but only if it's transparent to the user and behaves
predictably.

Another issue is driving through tunnels. Garmin receivers used to have
this problem: when you drive into a tunnel, the signal is lost, and upon
exit, the last valid location (entry point) is used as aid. Norway (where
I happen to live, so I'm affected by the issue) has a lot of tunnels,
including the longest one in the world which is 24.5 km long. After
driving though such a tunnel, the cached location is a hindrance rather
than an aid. As the result, immediately after exit the device could show
your location in some unrelated point. They fixed this in newer versions
of the firmware by using the map data: when you enter a tunnel, the device
looks up on the map where its exit(s) are (sometimes tunnels have branches
inside), and uses those locations as aids when the satellite reception
restores.

Garmin devices also show your inferred location while in the tunnel, based
on the tunnel shape on the map and your average speed during some time
before entry. Neo has a technical advantage here because its
accelerometers allow to perform some dead reckoning (combined with map
data, if available).

Friend,
which type of drugs do you use to loose reality and fairness?

People have different views on the world (even without drugs). And
different goals for their life (e.g. Earn lots of $$$ vs. Freedom for
Everything). Therefore, their conclusions what is correct and the
right thing is different.

It does not help the OpenMoko project in ANY WAY to insult Steve Jobs
personally. What helps is to be a different (and better) product than
e.g. the iPhone and others.

Re: Nokia open to anything ads

2007-10-01 Thread Dylan McCall
I have no problem with this, myself. The Nokia phones are fairly open - not
as much as the Neo, but they are definitely free to develop for. Their N800,
for example, is effectively closed only in hardware. This is no worse than a
huge number of PCs, whose hardware has closed drivers.

Nokia is a very succesful company with a lot of products, so they can easily
spread awareness of the advantage to an open platform. That is something
currently very difficult with the OpenMoko project at the moment, but
essential to its success. It is nice to see Nokia taking this approach, as
it shows they have a comitment to it as the powerful selling point it should
be.
Besides, Nokia's phones are a lot more open than various other leading
smartphones -- let's hope they blast the closed ones out of the marketplace.

Bye,

The idea from the Jackito sounded good to me - use the screen surface
as the audio transducer, that way if you play a low-frequency sound
you can feel it with your fingers. And it's much lower-power than
using the vibrator. But I'm not sure how you attach a piezo to the
screen; maybe the idea is to just vibrate the touchscreen film so as
to have lower mass.

i'm not sure that's a good idea: is the screen designed to take such
repeated vibrations, they're usually pretty sensitive?

imo the whole idea would get pretty annoying after the initial novelty

Acoustic feedback

2007-10-01 Thread Michael Welter
I was making some test calls using the Neo and Qtopia. When I performed
the echo test (+13034144978 x820) I got repeating echos (like you see
with two opposing mirrors).

This has been on the list before, but OM will not send DTMF digits after
the call has been set up. Also OM is not able to make calls after
returning from sleep mode. And I think the calls are not disconnecting
properly--if the Neo is disconnected while the called telephone is
ringing, the called telephone continues to ring.

I was making some test calls using the Neo and Qtopia. When I

I used a wrong alsa state in the Qtopia tech preview image, which has
an echo problem (sidetone), which I think might be this.

This has been on the list before, but OM will not send DTMF digits
after the call has been set up.

This is a bug in Qtopia. Comm guy loved that one. Has been fixed.

The Qtopia sent DTMF digits just fine. OM won't send digits after the
  call has been set up.

 ahha ok. gotcha.

Also OM is not able to make calls after returning from sleep mode.

Known bug. Still working on this one. For whatever reasons, the modem
  starts spitting out junk characters.

And I think the calls are not disconnecting properly--if the Neo is
disconnected while the called telephone is ringing, the called
  telephone continues to ring.

  I haven't seen this one.

I am going to issue a snapshot update, since I got audiostate
  switching fixed in Qtopia.

Let me know if you need help with the testing.

I think ScaredyCat from irc has setup snapshot image builds somewhere.

http://buildhost.automated.it/OM2007.2/ ? Think this is the one you're
referring to.

While we're on this topic, I just wanted to confirm if I use one of the
rootfs images from ScaredyCat's buildhost, can I use this with a) the
kernelfs that came with the qtopia preview snapshot and b) with one of
the kernelfs snapshots from ScaredyCat's buildhost?

Thanks in advance,
Tim

IR remote.

Just because you don't want to do something with your phone doesn't mean
that the rest of us share your feelings. This is open source, and it
moves forward because people work on what interest them. The end result
is something that's stronger for everyone.

Well put and understood. However, adding extra hardware to the phone so it
can do things not within the sensibility of the majority of users is not a
good practice. I too would enjoy interfacing with different devices over the
internet, wifi, or bluetooth and would expect such software to be developed
by someone someday.
