There was a thread about a very similar problem on the hardware list back in
April/May, see:

http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/hardware/2008-April/55.html
http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/hardware/2008-May/000104.html

And related replies.

Was this bug/problem ever really fixed?

I've got the x48 HP 48 series calculator emulator running on my neo1973.
It was very easy to port - I just had to re-arange the screen layout a bit
to have it fit on a VGA window, and cross compile for the ARM CPU.
A screen shot can be seen here:

RE: freerunner shipment confirmation?

2008-07-05 Thread Robert Horton
I went through the exact same process..the 500 error is because Chase blocks
the transaction. If you call the number on the back of your card they will
open the transaction and then it will go through.I doubt your order has gone
through so you won't get a confirmation.that chase email confirmation is
separate.I got it before calling Chase and removing the block due to
"abnormal activity".

Subject: freerunner shipment confirmation?

Hi,

I bought freerunner few hours ago from the online shop. The transaction went
through after at least 3 different redirections for payment processing.
AFAIR, in step 1 they took my shipping information; in step 2 they directed
me to some Taiwanese site for credit card information; and I believe the 3rd
step was my credit card specific which did some kind of verification for my
Chase Visa credit card. At the end of 3rd step I got some error and couldn't
proceed or go back from there. I however received an email confirmation for
that 3rd step from Visa.

What concerns me is, I did not get any confirmation email that OpenMoko has
received my order successfully. I know the shipment hasn't started yet and
the shipment notification may come sometime later. But should I be getting
any confirmation/receipt of transaction from OpenMoko or from the third
party site that processed my order?

It has been couple of hours now. Has anyone else received
confirmation/receipt by email while placing the order (for single unit)?

Thanks,
Jayesh

3 Little firmware questions (was: Software Status - Shall I buy or shall I wait?)

2008-07-05 Thread Ingmar RIeger
Hello,

my first questions are now more clear but three more questions came to
my mind:

1.) There seem to be three different images: the ASU, FSO and 2007.2. Is
it possible to use all on the FreeRunner having one in the Flash and the
others on the TransFlash-Card and select which one should boot in
u-boot?

2.) Is GPRS easy to use in the FR? I tried to use it in two normal
phones but it doesn't work how it should. And GPRS is important for me.

3.) Is there already a mail-client working on the FR?

Hope you can help me. When this questions are clear, I'll preorder my
FreeRunner to get it as soon as possible.

it would neither in the us nor in europe work sufficently -- both use 1800
resp 1900, too. so the phone would stop working ever now and then.
what you want is quadband.

You're confused. The phones are triband 850/1800/1900 and 900/1800/1900,
called 850 and 900 models for short because that's where they differ.
(In hindsight, this probably invites the confusion for people who don't
know GSM.)

The upshot, generalizing horribly much, is that either phone will work
on both sides of the pond in densely populated areas (where 1800/1900
service is common), but not necessarily in the more rural areas of the
"wrong" side (where 850/900 is commonly needed).

One _does_ hope future models will be quad for increased flexibility
(GTA03?).

This is quite common - I've known UK Visa cards to do the same thing.
I never quite grok the security logic of taking you to a Visa site
and getting you to enter your date of birth, mothers' maiden name &c
*during* a transaction (which they always do the first time you use a
card). If the card-provider wishes to something unique during credit-
card transactions then the authentication should be set up in ADVANCE.

At the end of 3rd step I got some error and couldn't proceed or go

Was it really necessary to post this question to the list? Couldn't
you have just emailed [EMAIL PROTECTED] instead?

I appreciate that Openmoko has these great community lists to make
use of, but this seems to me to be a standard ordering enquiry. In
the case of a credit card transaction query when ordering from any
other online shop, you'd just email them direct.

Hi all,
I get my new SIM today per post and it works fine. But I have to say- an
1.5 year old SIM card isn't old in my eyes!! that can't be the solution
for everyone- to get a new SIM, so you have to bring out a patch for
this issue. because most customers won't accept that they have to get
(or buy) a new sim-card. Even not when they recognise that older
sim-cards work (oldest card i have put in was a 8 years old 2G card).

Re: Shipping to canada...

2008-07-05 Thread Dean Bennett
You should know that there is a group buy for Alberta getting organized
right, and we could use 1 or 2 more people.
Taxes apply, duty might, and the couriers all may charge brokerage
fees. UPS really sucks in this regard.
One of the members of the group has offered to do the paperwork, so no
brokerage fees.
I think that the order has already been placed, so let me know if you
are interested, and I can put you in touch with the group.

For a single phone the fees are $50. However if you chose the more
expense shipping method from openmoko, $50 extra, you don't pay the
fees.

http://www.ups.com/content/ca/en/shipping/cost/zones/customs_clearance.html

So in the end its the same amount of money, but you get your phone much faster.

There will be GST, but I don't know what duties their may be.

on screen keyboard?

2008-07-05 Thread arne anka
hi,
somebody asked thsi already a while ago (but got no answer):
is there a package available providing a better keyboard than that
included w/ the freerunner, resembling a multi tap phone keyboard?
honestly, i can't figure out a rationale for spending effort on
implementing such a limited keyboard, it even misses crucial characters!

so, is there a fullblown keyboard (hopefully with up/down and tab, so one
can sroll in hitory and use completion)?
opkg list | grep keyboard
gives only matchbox-strokes which looks nice but is not really functional

You can at least modify the character map for the multitap keyboard - it's in
etc/multitap-pad/im-multipress.conf
You can add printing characters like slashes, pipe and so on. Not ideal but at
least a bit more useful.

I found the same as you last night. I was trying to follow the instructions at
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Switching_Keyboards
I've just used mokomakefile to build the packages:
make build-package-matchbox-keyboard-inputmethod
I'll let you know how I get on...

internet connection via USB

2008-07-05 Thread simarillion
Hi,

I'm trying to connect to internet via USB. I followed this howto
http://openmoko.togaware.com/survivor/Network_Setup.html but unfortunately
without success. No error appeared but I have no ping to the internet. I'm
running Kubuntu 8.04. The router my Notebook is connected to has the IP adress
192.168.2.1 and my Notebook has 192.168.2.102.
I don't know which addresses in the howto I have to change.
Can you help me?

two things are important:
- make sure nat'ing works (iptables -A POSTROUTING -t nat -j MASQUERADE -s
192.168.0.0/24)
- bear in mind that /etc/resolv.conf of the om does not necessarily allow
name resolution. it contains only 192.168.0.200 as nameserver which
usually will not work. add the ip of your router (if it does name
resolution) or any other nameserver (from your host's resolv.conf) and
remember that every reboot of the om resets the resolv.conf

Actually if you look at your AT output, you're now getting error 32
which is "Network not allowed, emergency calls only". I'm no gsm
expert, but my first thought is that O2 didn't activate the new sim
card. Try the new sim card in a different phone? Or double check
with O2 that the new sim card has been activated.

Once upon a time it was possible on a Neo1973 to use a "terminal"

Re: freerunner unable to work with 3G SIMCards?

2008-07-05 Thread Kevin Zuber

Thanks for your reply, but the AT command was on the old (card was from
decembre 07 - not so old), 100% working card (working on other phone). I
haven't test it in the new one in the command line, because it's not
activated already, but it must take the sim and then say "not activated or
so..". (regarding to the men in the o2 shop)

New Wiki Page: Latest Images

2008-07-05 Thread Brian C
2007.2, ASU, FSO, SHR -- if you're head is starting to spin at the
options available on an open platform, then, like me, you need a summary
of all these in one place that includes links to the files for the brave
and links to screenshots and/or videos for the merely curious.

Thus, I tried to resolve my own confusion by creating this wiki page:

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Latest_Images

I'm only partially confident that it is accurate, and I'm sure it's
incomplete in that there are probably other good sets of screenshots or
videos out there that I don't know about.

Also, I've heard of Scaredycat images and trolltech ones that I know
nothing about and hence didn't list.

But that's why it's a wiki! Please improve and enjoy.

Brian

Re: WLAN not working

2008-07-05 Thread flexd
After some test and error on my FR, i have come to the conclusion that
encryption (any type of encryption) does not work on the FR (atleast not
the image it comes with), this seems to be either a kernel
bug/misconfiguration or a problem with wpa_supplicant itself, it seems
to be using PRISM2 drivers? But the card is atheros is it not?

I am able to connect to open networks both the normal way (with
iwconfig) and with wpa_supplicant, however connecting to encrypted
networks has proven unsuccessful as wpa_supplicant complains about
setting the encryption with this message repeatedly:

ioctl[PRISM2_IOCTL_HOSTAPD]: Operation not supported

Not sure what's going on, maybe someone with a bit more info could
reply.. :)

Regards

Kristoffer

Good theory - Ian, didn't we have this problem with your SIM card at SCALE?

I've used prepaid SIM cards with good results - I always test in the
store before I leave, for this very reason.

Re: freerunner shipment confirmation?

Thanks all.

Robert you are exactly right. After I had posted to the list, I went to the
gas station to fill some gas in my car. The pump declined to accept my
credit card. So I called the number at the back of the credit card and I got
the same block-due-to-abnormal-activity message. And the automated voice
also activated my card. I used it successfully at a store in few minutes.

I am going to place my order again now. I hope this time it goes through,
else I don't have any other visa card and openmoko store doesn't accept
amex.

Thanks again.

Re: WLAN not working

2008-07-05 Thread Al Johnson
I am using WPA-PSK successfully on the Freerunner using a simple
wpa_supplicant.conf and one extra line in /etc/network/interfaces as
described at the end of http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/GTA02_wlan
It is on interface eth0 and the driver is compiled into the kernel rather than
being a module.

I haven't tried this with the original image, but it has worked on every other
image I've tried. The original image may be using an older wpa_supplicant
version where the default driver was hostap (for prism2) not wext as it is in
the current images. If so then you either need to supply the option -Dwext on
the wpa_supplicant command line, or add an extra line
to /etc/network/interfaces under the wpa-config one:
wpa-driver wext

Brian, and others in the Bay Area,

The Fremont facility is not at all set up to do this. However, Steve is
doing everything he can to figure out a way to do this in spite of this
fact.

Give him a little time - he's deeply involved in trying to keep the ordering
and shipping running smoothly.

Thanks for understanding,
Michael

These are probably silly questions, but I ask anyway (and thank you for your
replies)

a) In shipping the phone (freerunner) to Canada, are any taxes/duty/fees
applied? (buying from openmoko.com webstore)

b) How long would you expect it to take to ship to Alberta using the normal
(aka cheapest) shipping rate?

Thanks,

Hello.
I'm in Canada too and myself and Railer from the #openmoko along with
someone in my group have been doing some research into this.

UPS Suck, they screw you on two main fees, brokerage (customs clearance) and
bond fees.

Bond fees are for them putting up the money for GST which you can pay to
them when the package is in transit if you want to avoid it.

Brokerage fees are the even bigger scam and these are for clearing customs.
(These don't have to be paid at all using fedex or USPS and if openmoko
would notice this in the future and allow more options it would be very much
appreciated :) )

We worked it out that it's just 10 dollars extra to send it expedited and
that includes all of their scam fees.

You can do brokerage yourself and you'd have to look into it and see how to
do it in Alberta. For us this would involve rejecting the package and their
extra fees, going to their depot, which is near the airport in Vancouver but
I don't know what applies to you, and then going to customs. That's too much
time off work for me to be worth it so we're going to go for the expedited
delivery which is much faster and only 10 dollars more expensive than
standard delivery + scam fees

Did I mention UPS suck?

Regards
Dave

I don't suppose we'll know by Thursday the 14th whats going to happen?
I'm only in the US for 4 days, and it's my chance to get a Freerunner

RE: freerunner unable to work with 3G SIMCards?

2008-07-05 Thread steve
Arne,

The problem looks like this. Lets say you are ATT and you field a new
SIM. Your test team will test
It against a pile of of old phones they have and the new ones they are
shipping. They cant test it
In future phones that don't exist. So, new phone and old SIM is not a 100%
solution. Further,
I cant test all the old ATT SIM. I simply don't have access to them. When
Michael ATT SIM didn't work
We had two theories. First was that Michael lived in an area that used to be
Cingular and that ATT had taken
Over from Cingular, perhaps causing some issues. The second theory. I had
friends who got iPhones and had to have
Their SIM updated. So, once michael got a new SIM the problems went away.

Hi all,
I get my new SIM today per post and it works fine. But I have to say- an
1.5 year old SIM card isn't old in my eyes!! that can't be the solution for
everyone- to get a new SIM, so you have to bring out a patch for this issue.
because most customers won't accept that they have to get (or buy) a new
sim-card. Even not when they recognise that older sim-cards work (oldest
card i have put in was a 8 years old 2G card).

way others also see the answer and good for all of us that didnt order yet

There will also be a "handling fee" because UPS gets away with it. UPS
is the worst method for shipping things into Canada.

Now, after it was connected to the charger the whole night it says:
POWER_SUPPLY_NAME=bat
POWER_SUPPLY_TYPE=Battery
POWER_SUPPLY_STATUS=Not charging
POWER_SUPPLY_VOLTAGE_NOW=3324000
POWER_SUPPLY_CURRENT_NOW=0
POWER_SUPPLY_CHARGE_FULL=1223082
POWER_SUPPLY_TEMP=318
POWER_SUPPLY_TECHNOLOGY=Li-ion
POWER_SUPPLY_PRESENT=1
POWER_SUPPLY_TIME_TO_EMPTY_NOW=3932100
POWER_SUPPLY_TIME_TO_FULL_NOW=3932100
POWER_SUPPLY_CAPACITY=0

Apparently it wasn't charged at all? (Voltage 3,324 Volts)o

I think I'll try going back to the

Re: discount on invisibleshield protectors

2008-07-05 Thread Jeffrey Malone
I'm curious how well these work.

Does the cover have any real downsides?
Eg:
Difficult to apply/align
Reduces touchscreen sensitivity
... or otherwise impairs the phone's use or operation.

Thanks for any advice you can give

Hmm.
so the modem was turned on, you entered a sim pin. And on AT+CPIN? it told you
it wants the SIM PIN. Normally this means your PIN was not correct. If you
have your PUK nearby just try to enter the PIN again and see what is
happening. And it is normal that you can not register with a network without
an unlocked sim :)
