I expect the drivers to be publicly available by the end of the year.
Only the kernel portions will be open source. The PowerVR folks will
provide binary user-space libraries.

There isn't one for the Freerunner. But the alsa state files for the
Freerunner are /usr/share/openmoko/scenarios

[ Software Testing Report : 2008.08.07 ]

2008-08-12 Thread Wendy
Dear community,

here is the QA report which has been created before Om 2008.8 was released. We
simply forgot to send this report to a public list because we were too busy
with the release preparations. Sorry.

More details about our bugs can be found in our bug tracker
[http://docs.openmoko.org/trac/],  and also check our wiki page
[http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Test_Cases] to understand our work and to
contact us.

Currently we are working on a bugfix release which addresses the major issues
you experienced.

Stay tuned and thanks for you support,
Wendy
--- Begin Message ---
Hi All,

here are the major bugs from our latest image of Om 2008.8,
 - Out going call can not really disconnect by "End Call" if the other one did
not pick up the call.
 - Some of the testing phone can not make phone calls but can receive/send
SMS??? (With alert message"no network")
 - qpe crashed all the time in one of our testing phone.
 - Two of our phone can not wake up from suspend time.
 - WiFi can not work (show up "unknown" all the time)
 - Can't take GSM signal right away after on the device
 - [#1661] Unable to send saved tags by entering number (Locations)
 - [#1635]  After x hours the call active will become unstable. Can't receive
or make a phone call normally.

Due to all these critical major bugs, from our testing team point of view:
Not stable enough to release our Om 2008.8.

Best Regards,
Wendy

my advice is: don't be too quick to get off the train, which is well and
truly under way, whatever the load .. having a working freerunner that kicks
ass in 2 weeks time, or having it now: its up to the community. which isn't
going to stop, just because people are not using the hardware yet ..

Presuming I figure out and create an appropriate alsa state file, (which I am
working on and have
been for a day now). Where would it go in Qtopia? there seem to be several
places where state files
are kept, but where exactly does Qtopia get its from? and what naming scheme
does it use to get it,
or does it not yet automatically get a state file? If the latter where would I
go to find where to
fix the code so it does get the relevant state file.

(The writeup on Bluetooth on the trolltech web site which documents this stuff
appears to be
somewhat out of date).

It needs a fixed/working speakerphone alsa state. Same thing probably
happens with other gui's as well.

also needs a working alsa state file, then we can see if it is possible
to get this to even work. On the 1973, it will never work.

Ok. this is a bug in qtopia.

You can set it up to speed dial it. Just open the contact entry for your
voicemail select Options->add to speed dial. Then you can click on the
Star icon on the homescreen to call!

You mean help documents? There are help files for applications on the
phone. Just go to the menu 'Help'. Probably the only way to import
contacts is through bluetooth.

As far as sync contacts and such, Qtopia only syncs to Outlook. Of
course, anyone can write qdsync import/export plugins, but only Outlook
is currently supported.

Right now, the only way is to "update" Qtopia is grab the 'qtopia
update' package at qtopia.net. There is a script in there that will stop
Qtopia, remove it, upload the new Qtopia and start it again.

In the future, there will be a package feed, but making ipkg packages is
broken in 4.3 and will not get fixed.

you are to fork and do your own thing if you don't like it.

nothing. it's all already done. if the keyboard app:

1. installs a .desktop file
2. the .desktop file contains "Keyboard" in the categories list
3. marks its window as a keyboard by:
3.1 setting ICCCM WM_NAME to "Keyboard" or NETWM_NAME "multitap-pad", AND
setting SKIP_TASKBAR and SKIP_PAGER properties (these detect the matchbox kbd
and multitap kbd's), OR set _E_VIRTUAL_KEYBOARD property on their window (type
CARDINAL, value 1)

that's it. illume/e will find the keyboard window happily and use that as the
keyoard window. illume has its own internal keyboard implementation it can use
- or it can run another keyboard for you - and if the .desktop file has
"Keyboard" in categories illume's config panel for keyboard will list these
keyboards in its keyboard selection config. so you can install as many or as
few keyboards as you like and switch runtime, or use illume's built-in one
(which should save you some overhead and resources).

Hey, thanks for the help. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "halt". Do
you mean poweroff or suspend?
After booting in running logread -f, (before pon tmobile), the log is filled
with

I seem to get the kernel scan and WMI event messages continuously,
independent of GPRS state. They continue after the Connect script failed
line.

None of those logs are too revealing to me, any ideas? Thanks for the help

Another question on qtopia, and md5

2008-08-12 Thread Paul Buede
So, I thought this was odd. Can someone else verify?

If you download the file on the bottom of this page:
http://www.qtopia.net/modules/mydownloads/viewcat.php?cid=6

The direct link is:
http://www.qtopia.net/modules/mydownloads/visit.php?lid=77

The page says the md5 should be e250609cd4838817be07e1934adcb375

But I have downloaded it twice now, and both times I get:

pblap:/home/paul/openmoko # md5sum qtopia-4.3.2-080808-gta02-flash.tgz
9f3de59d6f90868e39059ab634a6430b qtopia-4.3.2-080808-gta02-flash.tgz

Is this the case for anyone else?

Qtopia issues with 4.3.2-080808

2008-08-12 Thread Paul Buede
I am not sure the most appropriate place for this, so I will post my
issues here and take them elsewhere if there is a better place for them.

I flashed with the qtopia-4.3.2-080808-rootfs-08081019.jffs2 and
uImage-2.6.24+git30+436204281bcd1fe5999ad6589ea7ab1b5360c352-r2-om-gta02.bin
files.

1. Since then, as has been noted, my reception is not as good as it was
with the stock OM build.

2. Also, speaker phone doesn't work, it just emits a loud constant beep
when in speaker phone mode.

3. I can pair my bluetooth headset, but it won't work with calls. I am
able to "ring" it through the bluetooth dialog, and it does show as an
option when I make a call, but if I select it, there is no sound from
it. The headset does work with my treo 650, so I know it works.

4. How do I change the number it uses to call voicemail? It doesn't
seem set and I don't see where to set that value. With ATT phones, you
are supposed to be able to hold down the 1, and it will call voicemail.
I assume that is not the case with this phone and I will have to program
it to call my own number and then throw in a bunch of commas for waits,
and then hit * to access voicemail. This is fine, I just want to be
able to set it.

5. Is there any documentation on the Qtopia build? For example, I am
going to export my contacts from palm desktop to a csv I suppose, and
then I will want to import it. Not sure where or how best to do that
sort of operation. Whats the right way to do updates on Qtopia?

Finally, my critical stuff is reception and calls, and phone functioning
on wakeup from suspend and such. I will be happy to test other builds
and OS's if they get that level of stability.

Thanks

I'm not sure if it would be worth the effort to work on this just for
2008.8. One of the phase 2 subsystems for FSO is a PIM manager that
should handle this, although I don't think much work has been done on it
yet. Maybe working on this for FSO and rolling it into 2008.8 would
make more sense.

The VCF import method mentioned in the wiki works fine for me with the
addressbook exported by my old k700i. You can run from the terminal which you
can install using the installer app, or you can run it via SSH, though in
that case you'll probably want to 'export DISPLAY=:0' first.

1. if special is smth to be used frequently then now * got the worst place
-- with finger it is nearly impossible to press in the left bottom corner --
just try

2. in most of the situations those placeholders are EMPTY, so why to keep
them? may be there is a reasonable solution (not too much coding) to hide
them automagically if they are empty?? having empty "+"s is plain silly.
Another option is to make that panel floating as well as the top panel --
click on "^" and it comes up with beautiful "+"s ;-)

What could be done to improve the OM development process?

2008-08-12 Thread Jeffery Davis
Two thoughts...

1. Instead of working on multiple concurrent software distributions, why
not try to rally everyone under one banner for a while?
People are going to work on what they want to work on to some degree,
but an attempt should be made at least. Choice is great
and all, but in the beginning I'd rather have one option that works well
rather than three or four equally terrible options. There's no need to
go running off in different directions when people still can't receive
calls reliably, among other issues.

2. Better communication between the development community and the end
user community. I have yet to see anyone say they're pleased
as punch with the keyboard. When almost everyone is unhappy, closing
bugs as 'working as intended' is pigheaded.

2008-08-12 Thread Jason Hooper
i think "basic stuff" is subjective.

for example, i just need :

1. send / receive phone calls
2. send / receive text messaging
3. battery life

but obviously this wont be the same for everyone.

1. i think almost everyone can agree on. so the sim card debacle was
an interesting hurdle early.

2. doesnt work in 2008.8 reliably while in sleep. does this weird
thing where the phone wakes up. no sound. and no message in the inbox.
but it definitely senses something. eventually it does show up at some
random point in the future, but i just have to know that theres a
message in there.

3. is absolutely terrible. thought it would last at least a night in
suspend. but it doesnt. so it wont ever even get to the alarm cause
the phone is dead. the persistent lightning bolt is obviously a
problem, but thatll get fixed eventually

i agree with you on contacts to a degree, but i only need name =>
number really. you sound like you have a lot of business contacts with
emails and fax and postals.

RE: Om2008.8 comments and questions

2008-08-12 Thread Nick Van Fossen

I can't speak for the Openmoko developers, but it is fairly well known that the
openmoko software is a work in progress with things breaking and being fixed
very often. I believe most people who have the Neo phones have them to be part
of something new that hasn't been done before on a phone, test and play with
something exciting yet still unfinished, and possibly even contribute to making
the phone & software even better. These people also understand that the
software is a work in progress, and that nothing at this stage in the game is
guaranteed not to break.

If your needs actually are a solid and easy phone, with few hiccups, and good
linux compatibility... I'm guessing you purchased about a year too early in
its development. Remember that opensource development != proprietary
development, as opensource software is often available to users/developers
years in advance of it being stable enough to do the work expected of the final
version... where proprietary software (like the iPhone you mention) is hidden
from users for years during the stage of development openmoko is currently.

This is like trying to use the iPhone a year before it was released to the
public. It would have been exciting, but few things would have worked
perfectly, with regressions and inconsistencies between builds just the same.

Be excited you are part of something new, but to expect solid performance today
is a bit premature. I can't wait for mine to arrive next week, working
features be damned! :)

Re: Om2008.8 keyboard wishlist

2008-08-12 Thread Daniel Benoy
You can apt-get it under Debian and run it on the hardware. It's pretty slow
with the Xglamo server, and completely unusably slow with the xorg framebuffer
server that you'll generally find on a Debian install.

Personally, though, I'm wondering what kind of development efforts would be
required to have the option of using completely custom 'third party' (for lack
of a better term) input-method software, so that I can just opkg remove
official-keyboard; opkg install dasher-input .. or something like that :)

As far as I know, if you're going to use illume/qtopia-x11 for launching
software and making calls, then that's the keyboard you have, like it or not...
and changing it means changing your window manager and such.

It seems the new kernel needs another epoch bump otherwise opkg will not

I think this is related to the bug where sound is lost when you
suspend/resume. As Om2008.8 likes to suspend a LOT, chances are it
suspended before your alarm could go off. At least, I think that's
what happened on my attempts.

I don't know if the alarm wakes the phone up or not. Didn't really check that.

The trick may work. But I'm not sure booting from an SD works if the

Re: Om2008.8 comments and questions

2008-08-12 Thread Wolfgang Spraul
Dear Helmut,
your priorities are our priorities _BUT_ it will still take quite a
while, yes.
From what you write, you seem to be indeed the perfect customer we
are focusing our efforts on.
You have a Linux system on your desktop or notebook already, you are
looking for a phone that works well with it.
At the beginning, you want to use the phone only for 'basic' phone
usage.

How to get there? Well, I see a lot of development momentum building
now, our ca. 20 internal software engineers don't actually make that
big of a difference.
Great low-level patches are coming already, we are now trying to
straighten up the build system to something more like Debian with
stable/testing/unstable.
We are not developing a proprietary system and have no interest in
doing so. Compatibility with Ubuntu and other distributions is very
important.

I understand your frustration about importing contacts and alarms,
thanks for the reminder, and rest assured that these things are indeed
very high on our priority list, right after making phone calls and SMS.
Keep us honest if things don't improve fast enough!
Best Regards,
Wolfgang

Om2008.8 comments and questions

2008-08-12 Thread Helmut Tessarek
Hi Openmoko cummunity (and developmen team),

I'm a little bit concerned about how priorities are set and handled and would
like to read your opinion.

2 weeks ago I got my Neo Freerunner with Om2007. I was able to get it up and
running, even importing my contacts from my old phone wasn't really an issue.
WiFi worked ok too.

Then I flashed my phone with Om2008.8.

Call me oldfashioned, but I'm one of the guys who wants to use his phone for
the
reason it was actually built in the first place: making phone calls.
I expect only 3 things from a phone (which are the most basic things a phone
should be able to accomplish):

1) making and receiving calls
2) managing contacts
3) alarm function

I will go in more detail regarding these 3 points in a moment. I know that the
phone has overwhelming features and I would like to see them in action, but
first I should be able to use it as a phone. I don't care about GPS, games or a
graphical installer right now.

ad 2) I was not able to migrate my phonebook from om2007 to om2008. I had a
backup from my home dir and I had the .vcf files on my sd card. Well, entering
my 500 contacts is not an option. The keyboard is more or less useless, since
it
takes at least 'number of character' times 2 seconds to enter a word, which
cannot be guessed by the keyboard 'logic'.
What about sending contacts via Bluetooth? What about importing vcf files?

ad 3) this does not work either. sometimes I can see an alarm icon, but no
alarm
tone. hmmm, not much of an alarm then.

These are basic functions which do not work and people are talking about GTA03,
cameras, GPS mapping functions.
I don't get it. First of all the phone should be able to do at least things
that
a 50$ phone can do.

I bought the openmoko phone, because I'm using Linux and I thought that it
would
be easier to sync contact and calendar data with my workstation.
I was definitely wrong. The data is not even compatible between Om releases.
Furthermore it seems to me that a propriatary system is developed which makes
it
even harder to communicate with standard Linux distros.
In that case I could have bought the iPhone as well. At least that phone works.

As long as the priorities are not focused on basic features as I described
above, this phone will not be useable for quite a while.

Regards,
   Helmut

I want to +1 this. No battery status only the charging lightning bolt (even
when its not plugged in).

I deployed the kernel from the buildhost 2008.08.couple days ago and have

this.

I couldn't find a bug for this. Is everyone using 2008.08 having this same

And +1 also that opkg update ; opkg upgrade hasn't upgraded anything yet...

Re: Video demo: Openmoko Neo Freerunner Features Accelerometer-based Gestures, and Screen Orientation

2008-08-12 Thread Paul-Valentin Borza
Hmm.. Don't know what to say here. Are you using the 2008.8?
Older versions of rootfs used to make one accelerometer work, and the other
do not; but I never encountered BOTH of the accelerometers not working...

It looks to me as though this is something that should be in the 2008.08
deployment (opkg update anybody?).

I would like to thank Marcus for what a great job he's done with tangogps.
I use it more than any other app on the freerunner. I would like to point
out that tangogps specific stuff probably belongs attached to the tangogps
site rather than here. I have thought about looking into that as well but
so far this is the closest thing I've done to it.

Thanks again Marcus! Super glad the app works on 2008.08 (as with many I
was worried).

Ok, I understand now. They can be made like you just said, only that I need
to recalibrate the whole thing, so that more states are created per cycle.
I'll try in a future release. Right now I'm concentrating on the UI, and
writing docs on the Wiki.

Thanks,

Today's kernel package has a patch from Mike Westerhof he reckoned might

2008-08-12 Thread Yaroslav Halchenko
1. if special is smth to be used frequently then now * got the worst
place -- with finger it is nearly impossible to press in the left bottom
corner -- just try

2. in most of the situations those placeholders are EMPTY, so why to
keep them? may be there is a reasonable solution (not too much coding)
to hide them automagically if they are empty?? having empty "+"s is
plain silly. Another option is to make that panel floating as well as
the top panel -- click on "^" and it comes up with beautiful "+"s ;-)

That problem is solved. I got the latest version wicd-1.5.1 and now I am

Re: Fitting full-body InvisibleShield - order of application?

2008-08-12 Thread Vinc Duran
I didn't place the original post but I was thinking I should.
It took a long time for me to get the full body protection on. Here's my
recommendation.

   - Take the battery out
   - Reassemble the unit
   - Install all side strips
   - Install the back
   - Install the front
   - Install the screen
   - Let it dry and harden overnight and don't touch it all after the pieces
   are on right!

A couple of my pieces are a little funny. I think I slid the unit slightly
placing it on a table to dry.

I would definitely not do the sides first. I did the front first, but in
retrospect it might have been better to do the back first. I would most
certainly do the sides last (they were the easy part.)

You may be recalling that the thread (i'm just speculating here) said that the
tabs on the side were hard (the folds from the top and bottom piece, not the
long strips that go along the side). These will not want to bend and you will
have to constantly push them down for 30 minutes or so. Just be patient.

If I were to reapply mine, I'd wait a day to do the sides, and make sure the
front and back pieces were situated adequately.

Last bit of advice, pay some extra attention to aligning the front and back. The
front is a bit harder to screw up because there are holes to help you align it,
but the back is a bit more error prone. My back is slightly higher than it
should be and there is some slight overlap of it and the strip along the top of
the phone.

That all said, I'm very pleased with the invisible shield, and two of my
colleagues have been impressed enough to order them for their phones.

Hi all

Finally I am near to the finish line, I think I missed linux world, but
in the end I made something that could be useful for someone:

I opened a project in launchpad:

http://launchpad.net/ogino-gtk

Until now this program is available only on .deb package, so to use it
you need Debian/Ubuntu.

I am waiting for my FR ( I know Pulter shipped me today :) to build the
IPK version.

If you want feel free to try it. The two package can be found on:

http://rubino.dyndns.org/

Until now there is only a known bug: when you change the application
language you need to close and to open another time the application.
I will try to fix this bug as soon as possible

I actually need translator for it. There are around 50 lines to be
translated (I suggest to use PoEdit).

Who want to join please contact me. Actually it is translated in 3
language: English, Italian, Romanian. Who know another language and want
to help me please contact me.

Who has some suggestion or found some bugs please reply to this email or
contact direct to me.

Best regards

On July 8th, I've received confirmation that 2 shipments were on their

The first contained 3 shields, the second contained the FR shield.

Fitting full-body InvisibleShield - order of application?

2008-08-12 Thread Stroller
Hi there,

I'm sure someone posted a week or two ago a suggestion to do certain
sections first when fitting the full-body InvisibleShield, because
they said it's easier that way.

I _think_ they mentioned that the sides are particularly fiddly and
to do them first. Or was it last? I'm knackered if I can find their
post now, but if anyone has any suggestions before I proceed to foul
it all up I'd be grateful.

It will receive calls and make calls while connected to GPRS using this setup.

I'm running a vanilla install of 2008.8. I'm using the jffs2 and
kernel images from here:

http://downloads.openmoko.org/releases/Om2008.8/

I haven't installed much of anything, or made any fundamental changes
to the configuration. I did it on a fresh boot. One thing to note,
and this is related to Chris's earlier post, connecting with GPRS
irrevocably breaks GSM, and no amount of changing the power state of
the chip would recover it. Actually not even a reboot would bring the
use of the phone/dialer back. I had to halt the system and then boot
it. Presumably rebooting doesn't power down the chip and so it stays
in some sort of inconsistent state. If anyone knows how to recover
the use of GSM after using GPRS, that would be useful.

My only suggestion at the moment would be to totally power down the
device, get a fresh boot and then trying "pon tmobile" before doing
anything else, especially before using the phone.

Yeah. We are very satisfied with the performance of gsm0710muxd.

No, Om2008.8 is using the Qtopia gsm subsystem, which brings its own
multiplexer (which was disabled for the Neo last time i checked, but i don't
know the current status).

Yes.

No one is working on gsmd any longer. Some of the architectural decisions made
right in the beginning of the project have proven unfixable. The work of gsmd
is getting done by the ogsmd subsystem which is part of the framework daemon.

> Is gsmd active during
> voice calls only?

frameworkd.ogsmd is taking care about everything non-PPP. pppd takes care
about the actual data on a GPRS, however ogsmd takes care of configuring pppd
and restoring configuration once the GPRS connection has been setup/taken
down.

Which parameters exactly do you want to configure? We already configure it to
have maximum throughput.

An update: my order arrived yesterday.

It looks like it is the original shipment from 7/7/8 and it arrived
on 11/8/8 (European date ordering).

This is on the "7-11 business-day shipping", so only 20 or so
overdue. I'm sure the delay was "not Zagg's fault", but they'd be
doing themselves a favour if they gave more conservative estimates on

I have contacted the developer (not about this though) to ask if there
is a svn repo or something for the community to participate. He
(Marcus Bauer) answered that there only the source codes of releases
are available currently, he's been developing tango only as a local
copy.

To create a wider user and developer community around tangogps, I've
asked him also if it was OK to start a tangogps mailing list to allow
users and developers to discuss these things and submit patches to
him. No answer yet, I'll let you know when he answers.

And is this patch for tangogps or general gtk stuff.. To me it looks
it doesn't have much to do with tango..

I got mine yesterday, about a month after I ordered, so yes, very slow.

I orderd the full body protector, but now that I have it, I don't think it
is worth having. All I received was a screen protector, and a series of
cut out section, which are meant to be molded around the case. It would
probably work well for something with a flat face like an iPod, but I
don't think it would work for the freerunner.

I would suggest that anyone else buys just the screen protector.

| ah, very nice. ok resolution, and decent docs too

Glamo and CPU both have camera interfaces that are either unused or
re-used for other stuff. I2C connection to camera module is only for
settings like "brightness", bulk pixel data comes down a parallel bus
that you have nothing to connect to.

Best bet for this if you are interested is the same story for all other
peripherals -- USB host mode on the USB socket, nice and neat, power is
provided... detachable...

You shouldn't need to do anything special to make it charge from your
laptop, assuming you're using a new kernel, unless you're hitting a new
bug. Forcing fast charge mode worked around bugs in older kernels, but
is now mostly just a dangerous hack for strange/broken hardware setups.

I'm charging mine via a laptop usb port as I type this, and didn't force
a charging mode. The included 1000ma charger is faster, but the laptop
also charges the battery.

I'm not sure if it does conflict with the gypsy thing or not as I really
don't like the included GPS app and so never use it (perhaps I've been
spoiled by tango ;).

To get tangoGPS to work, I installed the following packages and their
dependencies:

gpsd
gps-utils
libgps16

Cheers,

Just for the record: I just made a successful call on debian. Only hit
a few bugs which I managed to workaround (thanks to pkg-fso people!):

Paul,

Congratulations! This is a great advance feature. I'll be using it a lot!

Hi,

As Google Summer of Code 2008 is almost at its end, here's a video showing
what you should expect out of the accelerometer-based gestures project:
http://digg.com/gadgets/Openmoko_Neo_Freerunner_Motion_Gestures_Screen_Orientation_2
There still are some things that need to be worked on for the GUI, but I
will release another package on Thursday/Friday with everything you've just
seen in the YouTube video.

Again, big thanks to Daniel for helping me out with the problems I have
encountered on the way. Thanks Daniel!
This doesn't mean that I'll stop working on the project; on the contrary, I
will continue to improve it, and I'll use the Neo for my primary development
target.

Would be nice if the changes will be included into the *.ipk.

How did you guys handle the gpsd for TangoGPS under 2008.8?

I thought 2008.8 used gypsy or a dbus-based gpsd or something. Will
installing gpsd conflict with whichever gypsy-solution is used on 2008.8?
Which gpsd package did you install, if that's what you did?
