The only thing that works is pressing the power button to bring up the

Setting up Qtextended: no block2mtd module

2008-10-05 Thread Paul
Hi all,

I am running a Mandriva 2008 box, kernel is 2.6.22.19-desktop-2mdv.

I am trying to set up qtextended on the uSD-card, and my attempts fail
when trying to mount the jffs image on a loopback device.
Been ollowing the wiki, and the problem is:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] FR]# modprobe block2mtd block2mtd=$loop,131072
FATAL: Module block2mtd not found.

I also tried the alternate route, with mtdcore, but that too is not
available. Hmpf.

Can anyone give me a pointer on how to fix this?

Thanks,
Paul

Download Qt Extended flash image for FIC Neo Freerunner (gta02)

Must have done 20-30 flashes over the past few weeks, various versions
of 2007/2008/ASU/FSO/FDOM :) Most of them work - sort of. In
particular, most dont want to register the GSM without extra work.

I used qtopia/uImage-gta02-g291a9d50_mwester-stable.bin (has the correct
md5sum) which I think is supposed to match QTExtended 4.4.1 - but it has
the symptoms Ive previously described. I actually suspect it might have
hung on the pin dialog like some other distros do as in shutting down
via the menu a phone pad sometimes popsup with waiting or some such.
Waited 15 minutes before removing the battery ...

Hi Lorn,

is there anything we can do to help debug the echo problem?
Or the alarm clock thingie after suspend (or maybe that's still an
outstanding issue)? For the alarm: if I don't suspend, it will probably
work fine, but then I'm afraid about battery time (and since we don't

Re: The Lost Openmoko Community

2008-10-05 Thread Ole Kliemann
Hi Vasco,

On Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 04:42:02PM +0100, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 To all, but especially OM.
I felt a little cheated when I saw the FR I had bought was not ready
to be used as a daily phone. This had in fact been the publicity by OM
at the time - GTA01 was for tinkerers, and GTA02 was for the public.
Then people said no, it was clear that GTA02 was also for tinkerers
 only...

I experienced it the very same way. If you looked just at
www.openmoko.com, you would think GTA02 was a ready phone for end-users.
I can be blamed for not informing myself enough. But I think OM at least
tolerated the possibility of users being misinformed. Otherwise they
should have put a clear warning on openmoko.com.

Dear OM team,

such a warning is even missing today. Instead I read:

``If you plan on using your FreeRunner for everyday use, then we would
recommend Qtopia. While it doesn't utilize all the the new hardware
features of the phone, it is reliable and stable.''

May be that Qtopia is stable, alas the kernel and hardware are not. WSOD
and GSM buzz is my everyday reality.

But honestly, I still love this project. OM after all is providing the
first free phone. It is about time that man reclaimed machine. And this
is a very important step towards it.

Still there is a lot of disappointment. And that certainly comes from a
lack of communication and information. I experience an unopenness
concerning things that don't work yet.

When people complain about their FR not being usable as a phone, they
get answers like this one:

``I appreciate that many of you purchased the FR to use as your daily
phone. But I really believe that the magic of Openmoko comes from what
we do with this platform that is different from, and way beyond, a mere
phone.''[1]

Exaggerating just a bit, it sounds like:

``My FR is not working as a phone!'' - ``Well son, it was never meant
to be a phone.''

That's just one random example but to me it feels like the general
direction of many OM staff postings.

So to pick up my earlier point: Why does openmoko.com not explicitly
state that the phone's software is not ready for reliable daily use?
There should also be a note about the possibility that the FR with your
provider in your region will be suffering from GSM buzz. Thus being
unusable as a phone.

Ole

Suspend on QT Extended etc.

2008-10-05 Thread Nicolas Linkert
Hi,

I am - again - new to this list after my initial contact with the Neo
1973 some time ago. Now I am starting anew with the Freerunner :-)

I have QT Extended running on the FR and I have some questions:

- Suspend works but it does not wake up on incoming calls. This is a
rather old bug. Is there any workaround?
- what rootfs is there to use with it? Can I take any rootfs from any
distribution? Or should I stay with 2007.2? Maybe 2008.9?
- Scrolling with QT Extended is a bit odd. I seem to be starting
applicans while scrolling ... Any workaround for this?

In case someione can enlighten me, I'd appreciate.

Thanks in advance best regards,

QTextended 4.4.1

2008-10-05 Thread Paul
Hi,

I just flashed QTextended 4.4.1. on my FR (becoming adventurous), and it
works quite well.

Something I found:

- pairing a Bluetooth device works well
- switching OFF the Bluetooth device makes the FR hang

After removing the battery and rebooting:

- switching ON the Bluetooth device makes the FR hang

In both occasions, a small timer-clock starts revolving and at 14
seconds it stops and is determined to stay there.

Is this common experience? Or did I just not wait long enough (about a
minute) for QT to respond again? (Pressing powerbutton for a long time
did not make anything move...)

suspend again after 50s (did not work). Shutdown and restarted phone
(suspending properly again).

3. Executing 'apm' from terminal earlier used to give battery status ...
does not any longer. I'm assuming this is related to battery icon
showing empty.

4. Wifi configuration worked perfectly from gui. Except for empty
'resolv.conf', I vaguely remember seeing somewhere that have to do stuff
to get that working. Will look into that. 'System Info' network showed
wrong gateway (IP assigned to device instead of gateway IP). But
configuration was correct according to 'ip route show' and it was
working ok.

5. Contact upload from vcf worked. For newbies: path is now
/opt/Trolltech/Qtopia/... instead of /opt/Nokia/Qtopia/... if you are
using the instructions from

6. Phone UI freezes for some time (30s) sometimes (rarely). Not been
able to do any further analysis as to when / why / how.

7. Desperately need info on how mapping demo can be configured etc. Need
to cache maps. It seems you can't move around / zoom.

Re: The Lost Openmoko Community

2008-10-05 Thread t m
I agree with what you are saying. When I bought the phone I knew there were
some issues, but I had confidence in the hardware. I also had the impression
it wouldn't take much time to be able to use it as a very basic phone. Maybe
I was wrong with my assumption.
Even the so called reliable and stable qtopia had missing sms messages,
picking up a call and no sound, lost pin enter screens, echo and resume not
functional.

Would be nice to have one basic image with a focus on these issues. Even if
it slowed down development. I guess developers also need a phone, don't
they?

You need to modify the VM to target arm4 and use X11 for display (and

I don't think I was exactly clear on using the email database.
What I was thinking is that you could run a simple program on

( and contacts) that you have on your PC. Same with chat logs.
Then merge that (somehow) into the database on the phone,
say in the personal.

After removing the battery and rebooting:

  - switching ON the Bluetooth device makes the FR hang

In both occasions, a small timer-clock starts revolving and at 14
seconds it stops and is determined to stay there.

 Hi all,

Not tried bluetooth, but been using QTextended since yesterday, and
 here are my observations:

 1. On incoming call, ringtone is played from ear-phone instead of
speaker-phone. Media player also plays back using ear-phone.
 * by ear-phone I mean the speaker where you put your ear to to
listen to other party in voice call and speaker-phone is the speaker
 on the side.

 2. Power management can be a little erratic. I.e. I changed settings
so that phone does not suspend even on battery (worked). Changed it
to suspend again after 50s (did not work). Shutdown and restarted
 phone (suspending properly again).

 3. Executing 'apm' from terminal earlier used to give battery
status ... does not any longer. I'm assuming this is related to
 battery icon showing empty.

 4. Wifi configuration worked perfectly from gui. Except for empty
'resolv.conf', I vaguely remember seeing somewhere that have to do
stuff to get that working. Will look into that. 'System Info' network
showed wrong gateway (IP assigned to device instead of gateway IP).
But configuration was correct according to 'ip route show' and it was
 working ok.

 5. Contact upload from vcf worked. For newbies: path is now
/opt/Trolltech/Qtopia/... instead of /opt/Nokia/Qtopia/... if you are
 using the instructions from
 http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Import_Vcf_Contacts . Will update wiki
 on this soon.

 6. Phone UI freezes for some time (30s) sometimes (rarely). Not been
able to do any further analysis as to when / why / how.

 7. Desperately need info on how mapping demo can be configured etc.
Need to cache maps. It seems you can't move around / zoom.

 @Lorn
any way we could provide you with debugging info / help that you
require to get this working perfectly. If you could guide us to some
 links etc for the same.
 Would be much appreciated.

If anybody has observed these issues in their setup / worked around
 them, pointers would be appreciated.

Hi,

I haven't had any issues with bluetooth or waking up from suspended for
a call (haven't tried sms before). However, my issues are:

- echo is back. With echo I mean when somebody else is calling you on
your freerunner and they hear everything they say themselves. This in
fact is so loud that the freerunner is unusable as a phone. Maybe that
alsa controls can help here, but I don't seem to be able to find the
alsa state files on qtextended.
- alarm doesn't sound on time when the phone is suspended. The phone
unsuspends right on time, but no alarm is played/shown (but it does
after a while if you keep the phone unsuspended). Probably this has to
do with the alarm already being overdue when the phone finishes
unsuspending. Being somebody who doesn't own a separate alarm clock,
this is a must-have function for me.

For the empty battery icon: install the latest webster kernel found at
http://moko.mwester.net/dl.html#kernels , this kernel fixes at least
that and maybe even the bluetooth issues.

 base:
 http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/community/2008-October/032337.html

Now only the alarm clock issue remains (in my case). I will force
myself to use the phone as regular phone for one day

For the alarm, I just did some testing: it seems atd behaves as it
should, and since the phone unsuspends on time, I decided to play
around a bit. So I created a shell script:
--
#!/bin/sh
# unsuspend
echo 0 /sys/devices/platform/neo1973-pm-gsm.0/flowcontrolled
# let unsuspend sink in a bit
sleep 15
# now play a sound
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/Trolltech/Qtopia/lib/
/opt/Trolltech/Qtopia/bin/mediaplayer /opt/Trolltech/Qtopia/sounds/alarm.wav

# sleep 5 secs and play it again
sleep 5
/opt/Trolltech/Qtopia/bin/mediaplayer /opt/Trolltech/Qtopia/sounds/alarm.wav

# remove it from spool dir, so it won't launch again
rm $0

Then I copied this script to /var/spool/at, renamed it to the time I
want it to start (perl is your friend here to convert time to epoch
seconds) and triggered at (echo /var/spool/at/trigger).
Now I let my phone suspend, and on the time I want it, the phone
unsuspends, waits exactly 15 secs (scripted) and then plays the wav
files as intended.
So this leads me to believe that the method used in the alarm clock
is either broken or not adjusted to work with later qtopia versions.

| mouse and the USB charger that comes with the FR. Would that work,
| that is, can the FR be charged while being in host mode so the battery

You can do it, but you need to be in logical host mode

~ - echo host /sys/devices/platform/s3c2410-ohci/usb_mode

but NOT electrically in host mode

~ - echo 0 /sys/devices/platform/neo1973-pm-host.0/hostmode

The reason is that part of the deal of being electrically in host mode
disconnects the USB socket V+ from the PMU, that alone will defeat the
possibility of charging no matter what else you do.

Another side effect of not being electrically in host mode is you need
to externally add 2 x 15K pulldown resistors, one on D+ and the other on
D-, with that you should be able to have the external power, charging,
and USB devices all at the same time.

u-splash

2008-10-05 Thread Joel Newkirk
I've got a question on splash screen changes.

I've got a new splash screen that I want to flash onto my FreeRunner. I
follow all the directions i can find at
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Configuring_the_boot_splash_screens and
http://svn.openmoko.org/trunk/src/host/splash/README and
http://svn.openmoko.org/developers/werner/splash/.

Since my new splash image is roughly 0xfff0 in size, greater than 0x5000,
it seems I need to change env settings within uboot. (on reboot I only see
the top half or so of the image) So I download and compile neocon, connect
to my FR, and issue the commands:

setenv splashimage nand read.e 0x3200 splash 0xfff0\; unzip 0x3200
0x880 0x96000
saveenv

which it accepts. Then I power down and back up, and I can still only see
the top portion of my splash image - clearly it's either not saving or not
loading past a certain number of bytes. By playing around in Gimp I'm able
to, for example, save the image as 32-color indexed, and as a result see
about 60% of the image during initial boot, instead of the roughly 45% I
can see when saved as the 128-color indexed specified in the wiki.

Is there a limit somewhere that I missed regarding splash image flash size?
Or have I got something wrong in the setenv? I took what was listed on
the wiki page and altered it as described, changing 0x5000 to 0xfff0 to
encompass the size of my splash.gz and substituting 0x880 as the proper
address for FreeRunner.

led blinking during suspend?

2008-10-05 Thread zing
In the LED software specification:

one wouldn't be able to tell if the phone is OFF or in SUSPEND mode. All
LEDs are specified off in both modes. I think it would be useful to be
able to differentiate between the two, but perhaps, it is technically
impossible to do LED brightness while in suspend? Anybody know?

This will benefit from some global configurability at some point.
Specifically, controlling whether things 'happen' in GMT vs 'home' timezone
vs 'local' timezone (local to appointment or local to the FR's current
geospatial position) should be possible to set as a global option, then
override for example for specific appointments, etc. As well as telling the
FR whether it should auto-adjust to local timezone, display a second clock,
whatever.

Anyone who's ever tried to coordinate meetings with people on the other
side of the planet, let alone done so while themselves hopping from one
timezone to another, likely understands the need for great flexibility
here.

If I live in US eastern timezone, have an 'appointment' set for a phone
conference to Berlin at 11am Berlin time, and the night before the
appointment I travel to US pacific timezone, it should just work and
alert me at the appropriate time, IN BERLIN, regardless of what timezone
I'm presently in, and regardless of whether I've opted for my clock to
display 'home' timezone when I'm traveling instead of 'local' timezone of
my destination.

The trick of course, as with all such things, is to achieve this without
undue complexity for the user.

I would find it rather cool if the red LED would blink on missed calls and
the blue one on missed messages.
There is no need to make a difference between a turned off NEO and a

actually power it off anyways. (Except if you _want_ to miss calls, but you
could always put it into silent mode than..)

this is a problem that happens often enough - projects.om needs a a reboot i
think (i think that was the fix of last resort last time), but this has
happened every now and again and will keep happening as i understand its some
issue with pam sometimes and ssh and maybe mysql or something - not sure, but
the result is that for hours or days you'll be stuck unless you file a trac
ticket with om's admin team - and then they need to get around to it.

as such i moved illume off projects.om myself after yet another incident of
this (which basically meant for hours i was stuck not being able to work as i
couldn't build an update to test as OE feeds off public svn and i couldn't
commit my changes and up the svnrev to rebuild and test on the device). but i
have the luxury of having a rather hefty and well maintained svn server on
enlightenment.org to use - which i also have admin access too (which to date
has been up continually 24/7 without hassles). it also made sense that illume
can track efl and e much better being in the same spot and building with the
same srcrev thus staying in sync. but that's me :)

No, that's due to OE having a flag day TMPDIR ABI change requiring
everything to be rebuilt from scratch on the autobuilder. I froze the
feeds while this is happening so people don't get a half-baked result.

As soon as building is successful again, I will unfreeze them. At the

The way it should work is based on the geographical location. The
location then needs to be mapped to tzdata entry (which should contain
 all relevant DST information).

One problem is when you are near a border, and the 'phone switches to a

to get back the phone functionality:

comparision to the first name files, FWIW. and

Looking at the list of names and graphing frequency versus rank, it
looks like it follows a power law
distribution (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_law) to get to 80% of
each gender you need : 313 male names, 811 female names). The top 100
male names is 60% of all male names. The top 100 female names is 43% of
all female names. last names, the top 100 are only 18% of the
population. FWIW, word frequency is known to follow a power law

power law.

I don't think I was exactly clear on using the email database.
What I was thinking is that you could run a simple program on

( and contacts) that you have on your PC. Same with chat logs.
Then merge that (somehow) into the database on the phone,
 say in the personal.

 i know - i don't think that's a great idea. it'd be full of typos! :) if it's
going to pollute the dictionary with typos... they should be the user's own!

btw - i added the first/last names in and man did completion quality go down.
too many names. a lot of them can be strange and look nonsensical when you
actually use the dict with it all in - it suggests lots of garbage (so now
suggestion lists are huge and most of them are entire junk as they are some

For personal dictionaries, people could just run a simple word

programs that do this I believe, but its dead easy to write
yourself) and import their email contacts into the database.
in fact that is the idea of the 3 dictionaries the keyboard has. it
has system (which is base language - eg english), personal (any
words they type in at all go in here - they inherit frequency they
had before but now gain in count as they get used more), and..
 generated dictionary
 - ~/.e/e/dicts-dynamic/data.dic - this file is expected to be
regularly generated from the users sms's, emails, contact list etc.
containing words from their every-day activity - so that friend with
a strange name... gets their name into the dictionary pool this
 way. :)
Is there a way to tie into bash_completion when we are on a terminal?
 That should be fun :-)

microSD single ext2 or ext3 partition boot?

2008-10-05 Thread feywulf
Hello,

I'm a new Neo Freerunner user. I got it a few weeks ago and signed up for
service to use with it on Saturday.

When i first tried loading a distribution onto a microsd card, i hadn't yet
read how to ssh into the phone, and tried setting one up by having it connected
to my computer in a card reader. That didn't work so well, and i still haven't
figured out why. I think it would be handy to be able to setup a microsd
without booting into a different distribution in the flash memory and then
using ssh to get in.

Then I updated my u-boot and flashed the phone using neotool to try out a few
different distributions. I still haven't decided on one.

After i found out how to ssh into the phone i was able to load qtopia 4.3.3 on
the 512 microsd that came with the freerunner. It works ok, though for some
reason my ear piece speaker wasn't playing sound. I tried qtextended 4.4.1
flashed on the phone and it works ok so far. The ear piece speaker does
function, but there is some GSM buzzing noise for the people on the other end.

Also I'd like to be able to get the phone setup so i can boot off of a microsd
with a single ext2 or ext3 partition that takes up the entire microsd card.
Since the updated uboot works with ext2 partitions it should be possible to do.
 Would this work?

setenv menu_9 Boot from microSD (ext2): setenv bootargs \${bootargs_base}
rootfstype=ext2 root=/dev/mmcblk0p1 rootdelay=5 \${mtdparts} ro\; mmcinit\;
ext2load mmc 1 0x3200 \${sd_image_name}\; bootm 0x3200

I'm thinking that the 0x3200 might indicate an offset to where the
partition starts when you have an 8mb vfat partition first. Should it be
changed to 0x0?

I haven't tried FSO or FDOM yet, but will be giving them a try soon.

I think it would. For me $bootargs_base also contained root= and
rootfstype= pointing at the flash which was giving the kernel some
confusion having them specified twice, so if you have problems with
it check that.

No. 0x3200 is the memory address the kernel will be loaded to.
So ext2load reads the file $sd_image_name into memory starting at
address 0x3200. Then bootm 0x320 jumps there to start the
kernel running.

Re: The Lost Openmoko Community ( what's a community manager to do?)

2008-10-05 Thread Steve Mosher
Stroller let's assume it is Possible. I had a long chat with Sean
today. We both read the community list daily and our number one topic
of conversation was the Lost community thread. Sean asked me what
I thought of having a community manager. ( he was reading my mind again)
On one hand, I said, Stoller has some good points ( as always). It would
be a bit like herding cats, and in someway we want interesting cats,
wandering off to do things that A) we didnt think of and B) we disagree
with. basically because we don't know everything. On the other hand,
we do recognize the benefit to be had from a little bit of structure.
I have my ideas about what a community manager would do to organize and
mobilize, But before I put those ideas down, I'd like to throw it open
to the community. Question: what functions do you see a community
manager performing. Write his job spec. ( hint hint)

Stroller wrote:
 Hi Risto,

I think you depend upon Openmoko Inc. to provide the community. Or
 perhaps direction for the community.

 I don't know if that's possible.

Community is, by definition, a bunch of different people, with
different ideas and different requirements. Sure there may be some
consensus, but there will also be plenty of people pulling in
 different directions, too.

Additionally, I think most of us, as Linux geeks, disagree with
Openmoko Inc. on what software for our phones should look like.
Openmoko want to sell their next generation of phones to little old
ladies and teenagers, and are prepared to sacrifice complexity to do
that. And they won't be asking the community how we want our phones -
they will be following their own vision to achieve this. I won't by
any means be relying on official distros to do what I want.

But what Openmoko HAS given us is wonderful, wonderful phone hardware
which runs fully open-source software. I have realised that any
criticism I might make of Openmoko must pale in comparison beside this
 - they're the ONLY people who have yet done so. (Perhaps we might
mention the no-longer available Trolltech Greenphone, but that was
only a run of 1000 units or so).

I appreciate that if you're not already a Linux / OSS fanboi, then the
above statement might not mean much. What good is fully open-source
software, if it doesn't work, you say? Well, the benefit is that WE
can make it work, and we don't have to reply upon Openmoko to help us.

Considering that the Freerunner is only - what? - 3 months old, the
community has made leaps bounds already. As others have pointed out,
you can make a bug report over a spelling mistake, and I point to
David Samblas' distro as an example of what the community has produced
 already.

I think that your problems stem from looking at the Openmoko
community from the outside in. Only 3 months ago the first 5,000 or
10,000 units of the Freerunner suddenly hit the market - of course the
direction of development is going to be a mess. It's going to be
impossible to look at just a wiki or two and try and get a handle of
everything that's going on. And one shouldn't expect the impossible
from Openmoko - to expect a unified direction of development you are
asking someone to herd cats. Personally I don't want a single true
distro, because we might end up with Gnome for phones. I prefer KDE
and others here prefer Ice or whatever.

Rereading some of your questions, I did feel the same way myself a
couple of months ago. why don't the developers feel ok to contribute
directly to 2007.x and 2008.x but 'fork' their own distros? I have to
say that I asked this myself, and I came to realise that that wouldn't
suit the Openmoko vision for their own software. Just as you can't
submit patches to Gnome to add right-click options if it doesn't meet
with their usability specification or ask KDE to remove options
because they confuse my grandmother, some aspects of the Openmoko
vision are indeed closed. But this free software lark gives us the
 CHOICE!

I feel that software images from Raster David Samblas, the work
being undertaken on SHR and the recent Qtopia release are all
testaments to the community surrounding Openmoko's device(s), and if
you appreciated how rapidly the situation with the software distos has
improved in only a few weeks, you would realise that there are great
things ahead for this platform. Yes, presently it may be frustrating
for you, but even the person who makes a blog post about configuring
their wifi under disto X, or changing the theme so that Navit displays
better... those people are making a difference and improving the
 Freerunner environment for everyone.

 Stroller.
