udev usb0 control

2008-10-18 Thread Joel Newkirk
OK, the only way I've been able to find to automatically bring usb0 up and
down with USB insertion, WHILE IN DEVICE MODE, is to trigger off
subsystem=="power_supply". (with frameworkd, will be able to trigger via
dbus signal /org/freesmartphone/Device/Input
(dbus.String(u'USB'), dbus.String(u'released') - but will just udev method
work for all current FR images?) It seems that udev doesn't register a
subsystem net event for unplug when the FR is in device mode.

Does anyone have a better idea?

I've got it bringing usb0 down on unplug, and on plug-in it tries to bring
usb0 back up, waits 5 secs, sees if the peer is reachable, and brings usb0
back down if not. Sub-optimal, IMHO, but it's working.

Pingus ported

2008-10-18 Thread Sander van Grieken
Hi All,

I'm glad to report that I've managed to port Pingus, the free lemmings clone,
for OE based distributions (it was already available on Debian).

I have submitted the bitbake recipe and patches to Openembedded, but there's
no need to wait while these trickle down the various branches. I have created
the binaries for you.

On both FSO and OM2008.8 you can install

http://3v8.net/~sander/openmoko/libboost-signals1.33.1_1.33.1-r3_armv4t.ipk
http://3v8.net/~sander/openmoko/pingus_0.7.2-r0_armv4t.ipk

Also libpng3 must be installed, but I haven't been able to get the dependency
right, so you'll need to do that manually.

Note: for OM2008.8, you need to have the testing feeds to get recent enough
SDL packages.

Re: udev usb0 control

2008-10-18 Thread Joel Newkirk
I'm sorry, I don't follow.  Sensing ethernet/RNDIS link /should/ be a
better idea, but doesn't work AFAICS with g_ether.

The question is if someone knows of a better way to detect that the USB
plug has been inserted/removed: when in USB device mode (standard state for
Freerunner, at least under 2007.x/2008.x/FDOM/Raster/FSO) udev appears
unable to sense the loss of link on usb0, so we need a reliable means of
automatically bringing up/down usb0 when plugged/unplugged.

Which widget toolkit to use

2008-10-18 Thread member kamituel
Hello everyone,
at first I wanted to say hello to you, guys, I've recently bought one
of FreeRunner phones
and I'm really impressed. You've all done a great job, congratulations!

My problem is that I'm a little bit confused - I was going to start
writing some apps
for the OpenMoko finally, but I don't know which widget tollkit would
be the best.

My first thought was to use Gtk+, because I'm familiar with it and I like it.
But then I noticed, that OpenMoko switched recently to Qt Extended, so
I could go with Qt (I have some experience with Qt also, but not very big).

So, which of this two toolkits (or maybe some different one) should I use
in order to guarantee that my app will run on future OpenMoko releases?

thanks in advance
best regards
Kamil

[Debian] installer script

2008-10-18 Thread Matthew Lane
Hey all,

I'm trying to install Debian on the freerunner using the install.sh script.

I keep getting stuck at Calling ioctl() to re-read partition table. and
then my script exits. I've tried individually installing, but after the
"install" step the script fails to install.

I've added a u-boot environment boot option to lower the clock to
10,000,000 as instructed on the bug report here:
https://docs.openmoko.org/trac/ticket/1743

After booting with this option, without going into suspend, and after
killing qpe:

DASH_BINSH=false SD_PART1_FS=vfat ./install.sh all

The script terminates after the partition stage. I'm using a SanDisk
8GB uSDHC card.

I'm using the latest GTA02v5_and_up NAND u-boot.

I think I remember seeing some more instructions, but I can't seem to
find them anywhere. Anyone have an idea of how to proceed from here?

Re: [Debian] Auxlaunch

2008-10-18 Thread Al Iasid
Ben, thank you for your comments! I just finished adding a command line
option ("-dms") to add launch items from the Debian Menu System. (Note that
it only uses DMS entries that specify "needs=x11".)

Also, I made changes based on your suggestions. I added a "-right" command
line option to swap the button columns. And, I added code to attempt
full-screen mode. (I'm not sure this works since I run the Matchbox window
manager where every window is full-screen). The AUX button currently unhides
Auxlaunch. I'll investigate causing it to also hide Auxlaunch. As always any
input is welcome!

The top level icons (keyboard activiate, battery level, etc) are displayed
by the really cool "openmoko-panel-plugin" (see link below). It is a very
helpfull tool. Besides power and GSM status, it shows/hides the keyboard and
controls Bluetooth, GPS, and USB. It is essential in Debian, IMHO. I think
there's now a Debian package to help install it.

+1 from me!

If you are using FDOM you can just rotate the screen by using Tap/Untap prior
to launching pungus. Anyways, installing a script that does it with the ipk
obviously would be the best thing!

Thank you for porting this. Its really fun playing pingus on the freerunner
even if the hardware needs to go to its limits :)

A hint for all players out there: don't try moving the screen like you would
do with a mouse. Instead, tap the location where you wan't to go in the mini-
map.

No, Openmoko did not switch to Qt Extended. Qt Extended is capable of running
on the Freerunner (and Neo 1973?) but the primary distribution at the moment
is 2008.8. The future of Openmoko will be FSO's framework combined with
2008.8's window manager. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

AFAIK gtk and Qt (and some more?) will be supported also in future releases.
If you need to intagrate with Phone/SMS/PIM just make sure you pick a toolkit
that is capable of DBus. Have look at FSO for more information on that.

the stock applications for 2008.8 are based on the qtopia
applications, and were written in Qt. the 'desktop' is based on
enlightenment, so etk is also supported

i think there will be lots more. iirc, there was an announcement that
multiple toolkits, as many as possible, would be supported by the
stock OS

I installed it using :

but I have a ratio problem, display is quite good with X over ssh and
default resolution (but I cannot see my mouse pointer) but when I resize
Fennec the ratio stays the same and display becomes ugly (display is

[FSO] python-etk lists broken in rev 36540

2008-10-18 Thread yves mahe
Hi,

last upgrade and last image (18/10/2008) bring me last revision
(svnr36540) of Enlightenment.

Now, python-etk lists no more appear. Even with sample 15-list.py of
python-etk-samples. C example etk_test works as usual.

For such problems, where can I warn somebody or fill a ticket ?

Thanks.
Yves Mahe

PS : from where come this svn revision code ? Current revision code of
Enlightenment's svn seems to be slightly greater (36770)

netfix testers?

2008-10-18 Thread Joel Newkirk
I've posted a tarball of my networking fixes to
http://newkirk.us/om/testing/netfix-j1.tar.gz, and a writeup on it at
http://jthinks.com/better-freerunner-networking for anyone interested. Wiki
seemed inappropriate (at least at this time), and the writeup is too long
to post on the ML, IMHO.

What it does:

Default route out eth0 (wifi) if present, out usb0 (via host computer) if
eth0 NOT usable and usb0 IS usable, try ppp0 (GPRS) if both fail. And have
nameserver lookups transparently adjust to match default route.

What it is:

Alterations (from slight to severe) of several existing config files and
networking scripts, and several additions.

Not a network manager (it's just config files and shell scripts), it
doesn't bring interfaces up or down, it just ensures that regardless of
which interfaces are up at any given time, which have gone down, which are
just coming up, that default route and DNS nameserver lookups "just work".

I'm hoping for a few good folks willing to test out the changes on various
setups/images to help ensure this works on all. While you /can/ just untar
to / on the FR and replace everything, I'd suggest doing it by hand, file
by file, so you know what's changed (seven files, in /etc/network/
/etc/udev/ /etc/ppp/ /etc/udhcpc.d/ /etc/resolvconf/ and /etc/resolv.conf
itself) and can backup present files. (don't rename inside current
folders, though, as some of these are hit by run-parts, meaning every
script in the folder gets executed - put backups in /home/root/netback or
wherever)

It'd also be nice to have extra sets of eyes and brains look this all over
and see what I've missed.

It currently requires that the default route for ppp0 be via the ppp peer,
this should usually be the case I believe. (let me knwo if you see
otherwise on your GPRS) It's also untested in setups with ethernet or wifi
via USB (host mode) or VPN. (the former should work, the latter will
probably need alterations of vpn config to play nice)

I do agree... I've but changed a little the (gtk) interface to make it
fit better to the openmoko, and I've to increase the cursor size (not so
easy to see while driving!

I'm waiting for this too

Well, in my experience it is recalculated but too late imho. Maybe the
voice sinthetizer says it but while driving it's not easy to heard my
freerunner (the speaker is to low to be heard in the traffic or if I'm
listening some music), while often I've to force the refresh from the
interface.

Nice. I'd like also to ask you a thing about the SDL interface... I've
not tried to compile it in my toolchain/OE build due to the fact that I
had no time to port/compile the missing libraries, but would it work
well in the Freerunner (that has not 3d hardware acceleration)?

The Openmoko distribution is an hybrid system, so you can use any
toolkit you know. Btw imho the best (for performances and for the fact
that the it seems to be the future of stock applications) is efl (etk).

However, if you can programming in Gtk you can use it without any problem.

Yeah. That's the problem. The rendering is not so good since the
keyboard pop-ups on each loading and so fennec thinks that you're using
a smaller screen than the one you're using.

However to get better performances (but not completely usable, BTW) with
that package, you should upgrade libpixman to the 0.12 version [1] and
then to have a better aspect (not to make the menus, icons and co. to be
too big) you have to force the screen dpi in the preferences.
To do it use about:config or, after the first run, edit the file:
 /home/root/.mozilla/fennec/*/prefs.js
adding:
 user_pref("layout.css.dpi", 96);
Or lower if you want (72 goes well).

Some days ago I sent some screenshots on scap. Here's an example [2].

Unfortunately I'm too busy to open bugs at mozilla.org, so if is there
anyone with their bugzilla account, please fill some bugs about this!

PS: a swap space/file could help you in your tests :|

Well, without adding bash wrapper scripts I guess that a exec line like
 Exec=xrandr -o 3; pingus -f -g 640x480 -m -s; xrandr -o 0;
in /usr/share/applications/pingus.desktop is enough.

Re: [Debian] Auxlaunch

2008-10-18 Thread Ben
Hi,

thx again Aliasid, but I've got troubles with DMS :

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ./auxlaunch -dms
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "./auxlaunch", line 246, in
auxl = AuxLaunch(sys.argv)
  File "./auxlaunch", line 130, in __init__
[dmsLbl, dmsImg, dmsCmd] = load_from_dms()
  File "./auxlaunch", line 228, in load_from_dms
app[pair[0]] = pair[1].strip('"')
IndexError: list index out of range
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

And I'm asking if the most interesting way is not to create a
middle-hand for a special menu (configured in .auxlaunchrc).
For exemple, on window :
 - left-hand == choice of menu
 - middle-hand == app of the menu
 - right-hand == switcher

And put in .auxlauchrc, something like :

M1=System App,/opt/myicons/system_apps.png,
M2=Games,/opt/myicons/games.png,
M3=System Fonctions,/opt/myicons/system_fonctions.png,

M1,XTerm,xterm,/usr/share/pixmaps/xterm-color_32x32.xpm,
M1,Rox,rox,/usr/share/rox/images/dirs.png,
M2,codebreaker,codebreaker,/opt/myicons/codebreaker.png,
M3,Suspend,apm -s,gtk-media-pause,
M3,Cancel,(cancel),gtk-cancel,
M3,Quit,(quit),gtk-quit,

Is it possible ? Maybe the 3 divisions will be too much ? And if the
name of the top button division is under the icon ?
I really don't know how to make that, sorry ..

Otherwise I've made a patch for AUX hide/unhide (thx
matchbox-keyboard-toggle) c.f. patch-auxlaunch_hide
Sorry if the code is horrible I really never code in PyGTK and haven't
a lot of time for it, but that works.
