Huh? This never happened to me before, and I make calls of 16 minutes and
so.
This needs investigating, but believe me: I'm not the most knowledgeable guy
on qtextended :-)
What exact version of kernel/rootfs/extra modules/phone do you have?
Also: enable the power logging and mail that output to the list.

Btw: I don't seem able to change anything related to "Call Forwarding" or
"Call Waiting", this is probably another bug in the qtextended code that
needs to be tracked down.

I'd guess that's the normal behavior: it always installs the latest
package available. I'd guess you can --force-something to make sure
the version 0.2 is installed, if you really want it.

Is your environment finger-friendly?

Btw, I all WMs I've tried until now, either try to resize any window to
become full-screen, or just keep windows size as is (so part os out of
screen). Both ways make parts of windows inaccessible. Especially
configuration dialogs. Tried E17 configuration dialogs (with font/scale
set to something visible without a microscope), especially in "more
options" mode?

Why not just add scroolbars (in the WM frame I mean)?
Especially for configuration dialogs. So if an app was not originally
written for small screen, it could still be possible to reach everything
in it's window.

Any kind of super tough case + general purpose mounting system to insert
the FR into will have disadvantages in size and mounting problems (case
+ mount = tall if mounted on bike handlebars)

For bike use, someything like this may be better:
http://wdk.dyndns.org/freerunner/p1000129.jpg

This is the test version - did 2 rides and have not been able to since
due to arthritis problems.

Just needs a flip up perspex across the top to make it water resistant
unless you ride underwater(!)

The black bands attaching it are plastic tie straps - the one across the
FR stops it falling out. The hole on the right "ear" is for the stylus.

What needs to be done:
reset stylus hole so tip does not protrude so much - could be like a
little knife in a crash - the rest hangs out the bottom close to the
frame so it out of the way so you don't need it accessible from the top

Drill finger sized hole in bottom of FR recess to make it easier to
remove.

route a groove for a neoprene oring around the FR and fit a glare
resistent perspex top (does such a thing exist?) with a clip.

paint and make it pretty - as a first attempt its quite good, just
needs minor mods the make it look professional. Got the idea from
meeting a Danish bike enthusiast visting Perth for a conference who had
a map board attached to his handlebars with clips for a big pile of
paper maps - that looked even messier!
Could modify it to take a charger cable for long life pack, but my
rides (if I'll ever be able to again :( are usually between 1 and 2
hours - running GSM and GPS gave around 4 hours (earlier shr-testing).

Downside:
glare affects are there, but not really problem, its almost always
readable, plus by leaning forward, my shadow helps - and this is in
Australian sunshine in summer. I actually think an improved screen
(brighter?) wont add much? - its actually too bright (shr-stable) in low
light conditions - and at night it lights up me while I am riding and
affecting my forward vision.

withou a gps antenna, it gives a slightly poorer HDOP between when
moving and the bike is stationary (I am not on it) as my body mass is
affecting it. It is still better though than having it in a leather
case mounted on a belt about my waist even when that is on back so has
almost a full view of the sky - probably body movement - manifests
itself in tangogps as small wiggles in the track at openstreetmap level
17.

FSO is probably guilty.

I don't think it drops the calls though. I rather think it's trying to
switching to the stereoout scenario, thus detaching audio from GSM -- to
prepare for playing the ringtone. We need to change the rules so that it does
not attempt to play a ringtone while a call is already ongoing.

[SHR-unstable] call weighting breaks current call

2009-04-15 Thread Russell Hay
I've been using SHR-unstable quite happily for a week or two - and the only
major issue I have is that whilst on a call, if another person calls me - I
receive notification of a call waiting, then it drops both calls. I'm after
some clarification as to whether it's likely that this issue is due to SHR
or the GSM firmware?

If it's useful, this is seen with the O2 (UK) provider.

For awhile Openmoko had hired Enlightenment's lead developer
(Rasterman), so that probably explains their predisposition to using
it. E17 also has the advantage of being both slick (in terms of
resources) and looking damn good. This has nothing to do with the GUI
used by the apps, any more then using fluxbox on a desktop would affect
my ability to run gnome or kde applications.

What do you mean by standards in "there are various applications and
standards available" ? As a full-blown window manager, enlightenment
will do everything any other full-featured window manager can do (well,
except have releases that aren't just snapshots).

Also, remember that Qt Phone and the Nokia tablets use their own gui
libraries too (Qtextended and hildon respectively), that applications
have to be ported to in order to look native. I'm not familiar with
Sharp Zaurus-based distros, but don't they normally use gpe software,
which is in most openmoko distro's repos?

at least one developer from enlightenment
(see http://www.enlightenment.org/p.php?p=contact&l=en)
was working for OpenMoko (http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Who_is_Who):
Carsten Haitzler / raster (http://www.rasterman.com/)
If enlightenment is well-suited and if you have somebody
with such a good knowledge... And now there's a foundation.
So why not. There are other approaches and quite a few distributions
(http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Distributions) supporting different ones.
You have the choice! Starting as a developer, the decision which framework to
use
might be hard though... (But if you have a choice, you have to take a decision.)

I have had these same thoughts for months. Fortunately it is perfectly
possible to use freerunner without using E at all. I wrote a small
dialer in python gtk and use normal applications from debian

2009-04-15 Thread Bram Neijt
Saying that the libs are dedicated to the Neo sounds like my worst
nightmare: no application anywhere ever uses them.. except for some of
the programs written specially for the Neo. That would imply that, if
you ever want to use an application on the Neo, you will have to port it
(or live with the overhead of running multiple GUI toolkits at the same
time).

Saying we only need good apps sounds like a big understatement of the
problem. The open source world is full of good apps, the problem is: not
only do we need good apps, they need to be coded from scratch.

I'm not familiar with the layout possibilities of e, however in my
experience, the more freedom you give the developers, the more horrid
the design :(. This often leeds to differently sized fonts, with buttons
sized to the text they contain, and no place for the user to start or
stop looking at the application. I've even seen interfaces where you
where never sure weather something was a button or not, let alone what
would happen if you tried to click on it.

Most developers are like people making their first Powerpoint
presentation. Everybody has seen those: everything has a different
color, size, and it all flies around with sound effects.

Franky,
I've just installed your version of QtE and everything works very well
with one major exception,
the phone suspends while on calls! I'm using the rootfs from april 4th
(recommended in your script)
this is very, very bad!

Re: [om2009] - send SMS GUI logic

2009-04-15 Thread Steve Mosher
My samsung allows both methods.

So when I want to send a broadcast, like "merry christmas" I do the
following.

1. Create new message.
2. enter msg.
3. Hit options
4. add people I want to braodcast to..
Then I get to browse through my contects checking off people...
5. hit send.

Or I just hit create new mesage. Enter the sms. hit send. get a menu
of people to add.. lets see I'll send this to julie and mary, because
julie just called me 10 minutes ago and she and mary are out driving
around. I do that all the time.

And.. when I want to send a message to Sean
I can
1. create new msg
2. Hit send
3. add "sean"
4. hit back
5 type in the msg
6. hit send.

I use both methods all the time. But then Again I use broadcast probably
more than most.

Or go to contacts.. find sean, click send a msg, type the msg. hit send

or go to inbox, find a msg from sean, hit reply. etc.

or go to recent calls, find seans last call to me, hit options, select
send a msg... etc etc

I guess I use all those methods on a regular basis

E libraries seems to be a fastest and lightnest on Neo hardware. When
using proper theme of course. And they provide very nice way for
layouting. I was sceptic about e too, but when I see that libs in
action (from both user and developer side), I'm sure that was good
decision. There is even Illume and Elememtary, which are dedicated to
devices like Neo. We only need good apps, which are using those libs.

opkg - question

2009-04-15 Thread Juan Lucas Dominguez Rubio
Dear list,

I have seen a strange behavior in opkg. The context is this:

A certain repository (listed in the FR's conf files) has these versions of
'package':

package.0.1.ipk
package.0.3.ipk

Somewhere else in the internet (not a repository) this file is available:

http://mypage.org/package.0.2.ipk

And I type in the Freerunner:

opkg install http://mypage.org/package.0.2.ipk

And the package that gets installed is package.0.3.ipk !!
Is this normal? I cannot have package.0.2.ipk installed? how?

Regards,
Juan Lucas

Is it resolve this problem ? :
When the phone is in supsend mode, when somebody call me, the phone doesn't
do anything. But when I wake the phone, it's ringing 3 time for a call from
unknown person. Then the real call is lost.
I don't know if it do the same with a sms.

If you'd prefer using Qt or GTK, both have dedicated distros.

For instance, hackable:1 is the continuation of the initial OpenMoko software
stack that was based on GTK.

As to why openmoko guys decided one day to sacrifice all the work already done
with GTK and to go for a plain new framework, well you should as well ask

Does this mean that time will no longer be synchronized with GSM? The
thing is that otimed changes the zone, while it should only sync the
time, no more, no less... Does NTP server sync timezone? No.

Why enlightenment?

2009-04-15 Thread Bram Neijt
I know this question must have come up once before, but I couldn't find
any real answer online, so I'm posting it here. Why enlightenment?

I haven't seen enlightenment being used for over 4 years, and with the
wealth of programs out there which are portable and can run on top op
Linux, this choice really astounds me. I'm only writing this now,
because I see that the next Om release (2009) is going to keep focusing
on using it.

Most people will not find this discussion productive, but please
consider giving me some good pointers as I'm having a hard time to get
my head around this.

As I see it, all embedded devices running some kind of interface use
either QT or GTK (QT Phone, Nokia Internet tablet, Sharp Zaurus..) and
there are various applications and standards available.

Why then go for enlightenment?

Hoping this is not to inflammatory,
  Bram

Hi Tom,

never had an issue with the speaker before. All incoming calls get
correctly routed. I have to admit that I didn't play around much with
speaker mode before (maybe if I set it to speaker, it can't go back or
so ...)
Also power management is working just fine: I have it set to dim at
30secs and suspend at 40secs when on battery, and that works just fine.

Franky,
It's great to see you making huge progress with QtEI, however, I have
some questions before trying your build.
1. Do incoming calls get answered using Speaker or Handset? On my phone
all incoming calls are answered using Speaker, which is very annying.
I've been having this problem since the time QtE was called Qtopia, and
no build has had it fixed.
2. Is power management working fine? If I change any settings on my
phone, suspend stops working.

- 20090410: voicemail number is now saved across reboots (see

- 20090410: snooze function works correctly now for repetitive alarms

- 20090412: wlan no longer always "online" after unsuspend. I don't
know if this saves power or not though ...
- 20090412: SMS's are deleted from SIM after being read (see
http://trac.karadog.net/qt-extended-improved/ticket/29). THIS NEEDS
TESTING!!!

- 20090413: vibrating/alarm/snoozing: works reliable now (there was a
bug in the used timers logic that could cause infinite vibrating)
- 20090415: "missed calls bug finally solved, it took some code
rewriting I found in the qtopia version Om2008.12 (thanks Holger!)
- 20090415: outgoing call doesn't register anymore as "missed" when
aborting the call before the connection is made (again: thanks
  Holger!)

(the last 2 fixes aren't in any tickets, I need to create a patch for
these.)

Problems found (more like small nuisances now):
===
- if you set the time back to something in the past, the clock service
crashes and you need to restart qtextended if you want to use the
  clock again
- bluetooth is not working totally ok, only after initial boot it
works, not after suspend/resume. Seems to be kernel/bluez3 version
combo issue ... After suspend/resume bluetooth seems to work, but
  receiving files for sure don't.
- if you try to delete the "Wireless Lan", the system crashes ... cool
huh, a crashed phone? So for now: don't do it :-)

- waiting call notification doesn' t work for me, it seems that the
command to set the CCWA on the network fails for me:

 AtChat : T : "AT+CCWA=1,1,1"

this provider related?

(FYP) No input method?

2009-04-15 Thread Paul

I loaded FYP on my Freerunner, and I am rather impressed with what I saw.

Unfortunately I cannot find a keyboard in it (I loaded release 3.01 on it).

Someone have a good idea for this?

Hi ,

When pressing the power button for 1 sec it powers off very fast . .
This is _nice_ . I like it a lot. But there is no way to lock it or put
it in sleep via this button

In SHR there is a exelent way to trap all this.

Is it very difficult to implement this in paroli ?

If you're looking for _the perfect_ LCD for this job, have a look on
the Boe Hydis HVT43WV1.
4.3" WVGA with probably the best sunlight-readability you can get on a
colored screen.

Some ThinkPad X200 Tablets have similar AFFS+ screens of the same
manufacturer if you want to see it in action.

However - I have no idea if it would be possible to connect it to the
Glamo. If the resolution is too high, there are also 4" with WQVGA
available.
Also, I don't know if it is possible to get this devices in packages
with less than 100 units.

You can indeed resend the message. After you send it, it appears in the
msgs list, if you open the details and press on the number of the
recipient you can enter another recipient and resend the message.

It is not specially for paroli, it is an illume thing i guess, there is
a +/- 3 pixel wide top-bar and if you're extreme lucky it will come down
if you first touch the top-bar and then touch the main screen.
i might have it wrong, but it appears to work like that sometimes.

and i miss settings for brightness, sleep time etc.

if you slide the clock to the right you can set an alarm, which is nice.
i have yet to figure out at what time that alarm will go off ;-)

i hope i will be pleasantly surprised soon, so far i am not jumping with
joy

assume, you want to sent the same message to several recipients.
you type the msg once and select either a list of recipients (given, the
ui allows that) or the message is avaliable again after sending and you
can select another recipient to resend.

in both cases the ui needs to provide that use case -- but if it does, the
proposed order would be logical and the same for all caes, be it if you
send one msg or the same msg several times.

It's always been like that. Although at least I do it the other way round in

Actually you can, just tried it on testing again. Hit the number field
(the place where the numbers would appear and you get the contacts list
and can chose one.

I guess both can be regarded as good and bad, my phone (samsung) also
does it the way you proposed, but we looked at phones where it is like
that ... hmm...

Haha, ok. I have to admit something. I am already abusing the aux-button
for many purposes.

Right now, in testing, it switches the profile while on the launcher and
the in-call volume (while in call of course). There is also a settings
app which you have to activate in the paroli.cfg
(/etc/paroli/paroli.cfg) which gets launched when you hold the aux-button.

So, to answer your question, yes it is doable and I already did that :)
But the settings app still needs work that is why it is disabled by
default :)

Intone-video. Really Really Alpha!

2009-04-15 Thread c_c

Hi,
Well, since I'm going to be travelling for the next 4 days - and I _might_
not have time to play with this - I thought I'll quickly post a teaser ipk.

This is really really alpha - it hangs my FR half the time - and I don't
think it's my code entirely - but it could be - since I don't fully understand
about half of what I'm doing ;-)

But, it's a (elementary) GUI - though slightly slow - and it uses the xglamo
patched mplayer to play a video in landscape mode. The ipk installs mplayer as
mplayer-video in /usr/bin/ and its config files in ~/.mplayer. So backup yours
if you have a diff configuration.

Currently you need to kill the program after playing a video to play the next
one - since once the video window is shown it refuses to get hidden, lowered,
resized etc.

But, as I said, its a teaser - so enjoy! And gimme feedback.

I'm thinking on the lines of accelerometer based button text rotation. And of
course to fix the myriad issues this is bringing up.

Yes ,

Image you want to send a sms to a bunch of people , then you would have to
enter all the numbers first (because you
cannot select contacts from your phonebook "yet" :-)) ,
After you entered all the numbers , you can finaly send the sms which I think
is a bit counter-intuitive .

first tipe what you want to send , then to who seems more logical .

Or maybe it's just me and I'm a bit daft and you can ignore this remarq though
this logic is found in a lot of mobile
phones.

I've read the pdf about the hello world. Pretty straught forward .. so I'll get

Idea's .. well , only one for now.

I think it would be nice if one could bind the upper-left button to a

Yes it is possible and the best way to do it.

As Tom suggested install fso-image-om-gta02.jffs2 and the do an "opkg
update" and then "opkg install paroli paroli-sounds paroli-autostart".
At the momment this option may cause problems as the testing images are
linked to the unstable feeds so if you do "opkg upgrade" you phone will
have the newest features but it will also have moved to the unstable
catagory.

I hope to have the feeds issue resolved for the next testing release.

Hi ,

just wondering about the user-interface of the sms .

When I want to create a new SMS , it first shows me the num-pad to enter and
then the text.

Would it not be more easy to first type the sms , then select contact(s) ||
type the tel number in ?

Who is working on the GUI ?

Maybe I can help a bit :)

Hello list,

I like the propossed mods, and i think that most of the changes are possible.
But how to get this mods done? I proposse a simple approach.
Changing the LCD is difficult, because you need to change the case in
order to fit LCD into the phone.

AS i see, The water proof part has a big objection: The touch screen.
You need some glass/plastic that protects the LCD & the touch.

Lightly used FreeRunner for sale

2009-04-15 Thread John Reese
Hi all,

I have an extra FreeRunner, purchased from the first batch of Neos
delivered to the US. It's very lightly used, with a Zagg Invisible
Shield protector on the screen, and comes with an extra (third-party)
battery, original packaging, and all of the goodies that it shipped with.

I'm parting with the FreeRunner because I'm a poor college student who
needs the money for other endeavors. I'm asking for $250 or best offer,
which I feel is a reasonable price for the unit, considering it's in
rather good condition and still has all the accessories.

My specific model has the 900MHz GSM chipset, and is known to work on
the local T-Mobile network without any problems. Willing to either meet
locally (Rochester, NY) and exchange for cash, or ship anywhere via
PayPal payment (buyer pays shipping!).

Although I'm sure you're all aware of what it looks like, a picture of
mine is available at:

You can contact me off-list at this email address if you're interested.

I made a bike mount out of polymorph, and put the FR in a ziploc bag if it's
going to rain. I can see sunlight readability being a problem as summer
approaches though. I haven't got round to external power yet, but have used it
in the past for Psion and GPS both from battery (12V used mainly for lights)
and dynamo. The Psion has a transreflective screen so it's great in bright
sunlight.

Maybe, but tweaking the UI for gloved fingers would be good enough for me. I

Yes, but I don't see much point in one without the other. And it still needs

Variable. If it's about the current size, waterproof, daylight readable and

Those mods look great!

But, how could we adapt them to the neo? I think the problem is not the
cost but the way of get them running. Do you mean changing the Neo LCD from
the 2,8" to another sunlight readable 3,5"? or is it just a shell wearing
the Neo? :-m I cannot imagine what's exactly your idea...

My opinion is that it's worth it to pay for it but I didn't believe it was
possible to
get it real.

I would like to read a little bit more about the idea. :-)

Probably close in the electrical specs to the currently used LCD.

sunlight readable LCD

2009-04-15 Thread Marcus Bauer

Hello list,

Joseph Reeves wrote on his blog about a bicycle app for the Neo [1].

I have always wanted to add cycling / sports functions to tangoGPS but
as the LCD is mostly unreadable in sunlight I felt there is little use.
After trying it a couple of times on my bike I soon started to leave
the Neo at home.

So I wonder about three things for better outdoor use:

1) How many of you would be interested in the following hardware
mods:
 * sunlight readable LCD
 * bigger LCD 3,5"+
 * new ruggedized case or rubber shell (including a mean to nicely fix
in on a bike?)
 * waterproof (substaintially more costs)

2) How much money would you spend on it? To give you an idea: the PSP
display with touchscreen can be bought on ebay for ~25$. A case may be
~20-30$ for volumes of 100+.

3) Last question: are there hardware people interested in
this?

Please reply here on list with your interest!

Re: Tasks Client for FR

2009-04-15 Thread Michael Pilgermann
I remembered that I had had a close look on the website already - and I just
did so again.

I see two problems here: first of all it is written in C (PISI uses Python);
but nevertheless I think, I could re-use at least some of their ideas ...
Second: the Sync-part of Pimlico does not progress much ... when checking the
SVN, I noticed that the last entry (in Changelog) is from end of 2006; other
parts are under much higher progress (e.g. Contacts) ...

So - for coming to an end - I haven't yet contacted the developers; however, I
keep an eye on this project and will try to re-use stuff whenever possible ...

Greetings, Mike

Re: [SHR] timezone broken again

2009-04-15 Thread forin...@gmail.com
Hello
You can add following lines to the /etc/frameworkd.conf file for
manualy setting up your localtime:

[otimed]
timesources = NONE
zonesources = NONE

with this settings FR would not update timezone from GSM module.

Sorry I have just forgotten : have you contacted the pimlico developpers ?
They already have begun to implement opensync integration.

Great news ! I think ics support will allow a lot of things

Synclm (and I suppose Opensync) does not only handle contacts, but all the
pim data as calendars, tasks, notes and contacts

I think it is a 'must have' feature if you do not want to re invent the
wheel. There are so many different clients for syncml servers (PDA, palm,
windows mobile, outlook, thunderbird, webpages, etc.) . Syncml is about to
sync both ways.

I think we must let the user choose. This is the power of free softwares. At
the moment, opimd does not handle calendar, tasks and notes (I can be wrong)
and -no offense to the developpers- we wait for it for quite a long time. If
someone has some good news.. On the other side, pimlico already has a
calendar and tasks application. I do not think pimlico is outdated but still
in early stage.
And opimd is not used by all the distributions. For example, Hackable:1 uses
the pimlico suite to handle the contacts.

I am really glad you and your brother work on this very needed feature for
the openmoko ! Thanks a lot

Re: Intone-video problems!! Help !

2009-04-15 Thread c_c

Hi,

@Stefan Monnier - I was trying something like that - but apparently elementary
doesn't cater for embedding windows under a top level window.

Well, seems like I'm really getting itchy now-a-days!

This definitely does help a lot. So what I understand is that I:-

1. Make a main window
2. size it right
3. then make another with the override bit set and position it manually
4. Use one for controls and 1 for video.

That should solve the problem. Will try it and post results. Hopefully I can
push out an alpha release by the weekend - unless I get stuck elsewhere.

Well, if it's even remotely slower - I think I'll prefer the faster solution.
I like the FR screen for its resolution and like running it with the software
(instead of the software_16) engine for the sheer pleasure of how good it
looks. But, the speed sucks. Don't want to add to it.
