Re: [QtExtended] Latest and greatest, progress mail 7
Huh? This never happened to me before, and I make calls of 16 minutes and so. This needs investigating, but believe me: I'm not the most knowledgeable guy on qtextended :-) What exact version of kernel/rootfs/extra modules/phone do you have? Also: enable the power logging and mail that output to the list. Btw: I don't seem able to change anything related to "Call Forwarding" or "Call Waiting", this is probably another bug in the qtextended code that needs to be tracked down. Is your environment finger-friendly? Btw, I all WMs I've tried until now, either try to resize any window to become full-screen, or just keep windows size as is (so part os out of screen). Both ways make parts of windows inaccessible. Especially configuration dialogs. Tried E17 configuration dialogs (with font/scale set to something visible without a microscope), especially in "more options" mode? Why not just add scroolbars (in the WM frame I mean)? Especially for configuration dialogs. So if an app was not originally written for small screen, it could still be possible to reach everything in it's window. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Just needs a flip up perspex across the top to make it water resistant unless you ride underwater(!) The black bands attaching it are plastic tie straps - the one across the FR stops it falling out. The hole on the right "ear" is for the stylus. What needs to be done: reset stylus hole so tip does not protrude so much - could be like a little knife in a crash - the rest hangs out the bottom close to the frame so it out of the way so you don't need it accessible from the top Drill finger sized hole in bottom of FR recess to make it easier to remove. route a groove for a neoprene oring around the FR and fit a glare resistent perspex top (does such a thing exist?) with a clip. paint and make it pretty - as a first attempt its quite good, just needs minor mods the make it look professional. Got the idea from meeting a Danish bike enthusiast visting Perth for a conference who had a map board attached to his handlebars with clips for a big pile of paper maps - that looked even messier! Could modify it to take a charger cable for long life pack, but my rides (if I'll ever be able to again :( are usually between 1 and 2 hours - running GSM and GPS gave around 4 hours (earlier shr-testing). Downside: glare affects are there, but not really problem, its almost always readable, plus by leaning forward, my shadow helps - and this is in Australian sunshine in summer. I actually think an improved screen (brighter?) wont add much? - its actually too bright (shr-stable) in low light conditions - and at night it lights up me while I am riding and affecting my forward vision. withou a gps antenna, it gives a slightly poorer HDOP between when moving and the bike is stationary (I am not on it) as my body mass is affecting it. It is still better though than having it in a leather case mounted on a belt about my waist even when that is on back so has almost a full view of the sky - probably body movement - manifests itself in tangogps as small wiggles in the track at openstreetmap level 17. I've been using SHR-unstable quite happily for a week or two - and the only major issue I have is that whilst on a call, if another person calls me - I receive notification of a call waiting, then it drops both calls. I'm after some clarification as to whether it's likely that this issue is due to SHR or the GSM firmware? If it's useful, this is seen with the O2 (UK) provider. Saying that the libs are dedicated to the Neo sounds like my worst nightmare: no application anywhere ever uses them.. except for some of the programs written specially for the Neo. That would imply that, if you ever want to use an application on the Neo, you will have to port it (or live with the overhead of running multiple GUI toolkits at the same time). My samsung allows both methods. So when I want to send a broadcast, like "merry christmas" I do the following. 1. Create new message. 2. enter msg. 3. Hit options 4. add people I want to braodcast to.. Then I get to browse through my contects checking off people... 5. hit send. Or I just hit create new mesage. Enter the sms. hit send. get a menu of people to add.. lets see I'll send this to julie and mary, because julie just called me 10 minutes ago and she and mary are out driving around. I do that all the time. And.. when I want to send a message to Sean I can 1. create new msg 2. Hit send 3. add "sean" 4. hit back 5 type in the msg 6. hit send. I use both methods all the time. But then Again I use broadcast probably more than most. Or go to contacts.. find sean, click send a msg, type the msg. hit send or go to inbox, find a msg from sean, hit reply. etc. or go to recent calls, find seans last call to me, hit options, select send a msg... etc etc I guess I use all those methods on a regular basis Joseph Reeves wrote: > My Nokia N96 wants me to select the recipients before I write the > message, and that's a phone that people seem to like... > > After all, I think to myself "I'll send something to François", rather > than "I want to say something, but who shall I send it to?" > > ;-) > > > > 2009/4/15 François TOURDE : >> Le 14349ième jour après Epoch, >> blok...@h0m3.be écrivait: >> >>> first tipe what you want to send , then to who seems more logical . >> I agree with this, even if I don't understand why. E libraries seems to be a fastest and lightnest on Neo hardware. When using proper theme of course. And they provide very nice way for layouting. I was sceptic about e too, but when I see that libs in action (from both user and developer side), I'm sure that was good decision. There is even Illume and Elememtary, which are dedicated to devices like Neo. We only need good apps, which are using those libs. 2009/4/15, Cedric Cellier : > If you'd prefer using Qt or GTK, both have dedicated distros. > > For instance, hackable:1 is the continuation of the initial OpenMoko > software > stack that was based on GTK. > > As to why openmoko guys decided one day to sacrifice all the work already > done > with GTK and to go for a plain new framework, well you should as well ask > "Why those Moai on the Easter island" ? :-) > > > > ___ > Openmoko community mailing list > community@lists.openmoko.org > http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community > ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Why enlightenment?
I know this question must have come up once before, but I couldn't find any real answer online, so I'm posting it here. Why enlightenment? I haven't seen enlightenment being used for over 4 years, and with the wealth of programs out there which are portable and can run on top op Linux, this choice really astounds me. I'm only writing this now, because I see that the next Om release (2009) is going to keep focusing on using it. Most people will not find this discussion productive, but please consider giving me some good pointers as I'm having a hard time to get my head around this. As I see it, all embedded devices running some kind of interface use either QT or GTK (QT Phone, Nokia Internet tablet, Sharp Zaurus..) and there are various applications and standards available. Why then go for enlightenment? Hoping this is not to inflammatory, Bram ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Franky, It's great to see you making huge progress with QtEI, however, I have some questions before trying your build. 1. Do incoming calls get answered using Speaker or Handset? On my phone all incoming calls are answered using Speaker, which is very annying. I've been having this problem since the time QtE was called Qtopia, and no build has had it fixed. 2. [om2009]
Hi all, First impressions: wow, how do i get used to this? it probably will take a while, but i'll get trough it. If i open paroli ( or any other app for that matter ) how do i get back to ilume? I am killing it now from an ssh session, but there must be a better way ;-) i found out that you can chage from silent to default profile by pressing the aux button. Is there an url with a tutorial on how to use the new image? Kind regards, Ed ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Haha, ok. I have to admit something. I am already abusing the aux-button for many purposes. Right now, in testing, it switches the profile while on the launcher and the in-call volume (while in call of course). There is also a settings app which you have to activate in the paroli.cfg (/etc/paroli/paroli.cfg) which gets launched when you hold the aux-button. So, to answer your question, yes it is doable and I already did that :) But the settings app still needs work that is why it is disabled by default :) /mirko ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Intone-video. Really Really Alpha!
Hi, Well, since I'm going to be travelling for the next 4 days - and I _might_ not have time to play with this - I thought I'll quickly post a teaser ipk. This is really really alpha - it hangs my FR half the time - and I don't think it's my code entirely - but it could be - since I don't fully understand about half of what I'm doing ;-) But, it's a (elementary) GUI - though slightly slow - and it uses the xglamo patched mplayer to play a video in landscape mode. The ipk installs mplayer as mplayer-video in /usr/bin/ and its config files in ~/.mplayer. So backup yours if you have a diff configuration. Currently you need to kill the program after playing a video to play the next one - since once the video window is shown it refuses to get hidden, lowered, resized etc. But, as I said, its a teaser - so enjoy! And gimme feedback. I'm thinking on the lines of accelerometer based button text rotation. And of course to fix the myriad issues this is bringing up. intone-video_0.10_arm.ipk -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/Intone-video.-Really-Really-Alpha%21-tp2639240p2639240.html Sent from the Openmoko Community mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

As Tom suggested install fso-image-om-gta02.jffs2 and the do an "opkg update" and then "opkg install paroli paroli-sounds paroli-autostart". At the momment this option may cause problems as the testing images are linked to the unstable feeds so if you do "opkg upgrade" you phone will have the newest features but it will also have moved to the unstable catagory. Lightly used FreeRunner for sale
Hi all, I have an extra FreeRunner, purchased from the first batch of Neos delivered to the US. It's very lightly used, with a Zagg Invisible Shield protector on the screen, and comes with an extra (third-party) battery, original packaging, and all of the goodies that it shipped with. I'm parting with the FreeRunner because I'm a poor college student who needs the money for other endeavors. I'm asking for $250 or best offer, which I feel is a reasonable price for the unit, considering it's in rather good condition and still has all the accessories. My specific model has the 900MHz GSM chipset, and is known to work on the local T-Mobile network without any problems. Willing to either meet locally (Rochester, NY) and exchange for cash, or ship anywhere via PayPal payment (buyer pays shipping!). Although I'm sure you're all aware of what it looks like, a picture of mine is available at: http://files.leetcode.net/uploads/2008/09/cimg2923-modified.jpg You can contact me off-list at this email address if you're interested. Hi , I'm new to this list , and actualy I only have my neo GTA2 for a week .. but anyway : Cool STUFF , this paroli and 2009 ! It works far better and is a lot more phone instead of computer like with SHR . The GUI is intuitive , easy to use and clear (white / gray on black ) is exelent contrast ! Once it's booted I also think it's more responsive. Only downside IMHO is the booting time. And maybe get rid of the errors and the boot banner ? Cool work !! /a fan Cheerio's Blokkie ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

I made a bike mount out of polymorph, and put the FR in a ziploc bag if it's going to rain. I can see sunlight readability being a problem as summer approaches though. I haven't got round to external power yet, but have used it in the past for Psion and GPS both from battery (12V used mainly for lights) and dynamo. The Psion has a transreflective screen so it's great in bright sunlight. > So I wonder about three things for better outdoor use: > > 1) How many of you would be interested in the following hardware > mods: > * sunlight readable LCD Yes > * bigger LCD 3,5"+ Maybe, but tweaking the UI for gloved fingers would be good enough for me. But, how could we adapt them to the neo? I think the problem is not the cost but the way of get them running. Do you mean changing the Neo LCD from the 2,8" to another sunlight readable 3,5"? or is it just a shell wearing the Neo? :-m I cannot imagine what's exactly your idea... My thoughts exactly Yorick. I'd be very interested in this (I guess I should be! ;-) at the sort of prices Marcus was talking about. What's the technical investment required for this? sunlight readable LCD
Hello list, Joseph Reeves wrote on his blog about a bicycle app for the Neo [1]. I have always wanted to add cycling / sports functions to tangoGPS but as the LCD is mostly unreadable in sunlight I felt there is little use. After trying it a couple of times on my bike I soon started to leave the Neo at home. So I wonder about three things for better outdoor use: 1) How many of you would be interested in the following hardware mods: * sunlight readable LCD * bigger LCD 3,5"+ * new ruggedized case or rubber shell (including a mean to nicely fix in on a bike?) * waterproof (substaintially more costs) 2) How much money would you spend on it? To give you an idea: the PSP display with touchscreen can be bought on ebay for ~25$. A case may be ~20-30$ for volumes of 100+. 3) Last question: are there hardware people interested in this? Hi ! Yes I saw this too. It is a shame, as syncing is really needed on a mobile device. By the way since last week "dates" and "tasks" are available in the SHR unstable repository. So if you are running Shr unstable, just do *opkg install dates tasks* to instal these apps 2009/4/15 Michael Pilgermann > I remembered that I had had a close look on the website already - and I > just did so again. > > I see two problems here: first of all it is written in C (PISI uses > Python); but nevertheless I think, I could re-use at least some of their > ideas ... > Second: the Sync-part of Pimlico does not progress much ... when checking > the SVN, I noticed that the last entry (in Changelog) is from end of 2006; > other parts are under much higher progress (e.g. Contacts) ... > > So - for coming to an end - I haven't yet contacted the developers; > however, I keep an eye on this project and will try to re-use stuff whenever > possible ... > > Greetings, Mike > ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
Re: Tasks Client for FR
I remembered that I had had a close look on the website already - and I just did so again. I see two problems here: first of all it is written in C (PISI uses Python); but nevertheless I think, I could re-use at least some of their ideas ... Second: the Sync-part of Pimlico does not progress much ... when checking the SVN, I noticed that the last entry (in Changelog) is from end of 2006; other parts are under much higher progress (e.g. Contacts) ... So - for coming to an end - I haven't yet contacted the developers; however, I keep an eye on this project and will try to re-use stuff whenever possible ... I think it is a 'must have' feature if you do not want to re invent the wheel. There are so many different clients for syncml servers (PDA, palm, windows mobile, outlook, thunderbird, webpages, etc.) . Syncml is about to sync both ways. > > The Evolution / Pimlico stuff - I thought would be somehow outdated already > on the Openmoko!? The upcoming 2009 will be opimd?? Well, last time I looked > for it, it had not progressed much behind the initial idea. I think we must let the user choose. This is the power of free softwares. At the moment, opimd does not handle calendar, tasks and notes (I can be wrong) and -no offense to the developpers- we wait for it for quite a long time. If someone has some good news.. On the other side, pimlico already has a calendar and tasks application. I do not think pimlico is outdated but still in early stage. And opimd is not used by all the distributions. For example, Hackable:1 uses the pimlico suite to handle the contacts. I am really glad you and your brother work on this very needed feature for the openmoko ! Re: Intone-video problems!! Help !
Hi, >IIUC the "window id" passed to mplayer does not have to be >a top-level window. @Stefan Monnier - I was trying something like that - but apparently elementary doesn't cater for embedding windows under a top level window. >thanks for bringing another superb app to the neo! But what you can do, is to create a second X11 window, with >the override bit set . >Hope this helps... This definitely does help a lot. So what I understand is that I:- 1. Make a main window 2. size it right 3. then make another with the override bit set and position it manually 4. Use one for controls and 1 for video. That should solve the problem. Will try it and post results. Hopefully I can push out an alpha release by the weekend - unless I get stuck elsewhere. >This is really really super slow on the neo, and it might not even work with >mplayer overlay window. Well, if it's even remotely slower - I think I'll prefer the faster solution. I like the FR screen for its resolution and like running it with the software (instead of the software_16) engine for the sheer pleasure of how good it looks. But, the speed sucks. Don't want to add to it. -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/Intone-video-problems%21%21-Help-%21-tp2632476p2637370.html Sent from the Openmoko Community mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
