Debuzzing in the UK?

2009-06-10 Thread Dave Smith
Hi all,

It's been a while since I looked at getting the buzz on my FreeRunner
fixed up, after having no luck finding anyone with the right equipment
to be able to perform it amongst local friends and contacts, so I
figured I'd throw a message out on here to see if anyone can point me in
the direction of anyone in the United Kingdom who has the tools, time,
and inclination to perform the fix for me. :)

Has anyone any experience with getting someone in this area performing
the fix?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

No need to sue any one :P , dehqan, if you buy an A6 buzz fixed I will
send you an A6 buzzfixed, just be sure you buy an Devel Upgraded
Version (A6+) in the webshop.

The guy of kd85.com Wim Vandepute is a really good guy, you can trust
any word he said if you had pay for an A6 buzz fixed he will send you
an A6 buzz fixed.

The buzz is produced only under a call you can still using the headset
for listen to music as example.

I think the internal antenna is enough even in Iran ;)

The problem with experience is that for some (unknown to me) reasons
many people talk about how good it would be to use a bt headset for
GSM talks but too few seem to actually try it. And it's supported for
more than 2 months in FSO already iirc.

Headset can be used to hear to the music or to use headset mic to
record voice notes or for whatever (you might want to utilize headset
button in some creative way). Some people report that in some
conditions buzz is not too much even with a headset so sometimes it's
possible to use it for GSM.

And no FR version that is in shops atm prevents buzz from the headset
mic anyway.

FR has a standard mini-usb receptable.

Re: Pat Meier (=public relation of Openmoko)

2009-06-10 Thread Steve Mosher
  Hi,

I have to quibble a bit here. Any PR firm, including Pat's, is at the
mercy of the mouthpiece. That's me. Before they release the information
they look me in the eye and ask me to vouch for the veracity.
Think of them as a messenger. You hand the postman a letter professing
your undying love for a woman. he delivers the letter. Later, you break
the woman's heart. Should she shoot the postman who was paid to deliver
the message? But PR firms do more than simply deliver your message. They
also help you correct false stories in the press.

WRT wikis as a tool for putting information into the world. I'm not
entirely convinced that a wiki can serve as best tool for every
situation. This is something I used to teach in rhetoric class.
Every message has a speaker, a channel, an audience and a purpose.
One channel doesn't fit all. So if my purpose is to speak to the press
with the purpose of giving them information that they can re transmit
easily across many other channels, then a press release is a great tool.
We send a press release to a reporter ( press releases are for the press
) that reporter uses another channel, the phone, to talk to me. He's got
the release in his hands, I've got it in mine. We do an interview, live.
he questions me. listens to my answers. Pushes hard on me. It's hard
to do that in today's version of the wiki, which is really a non real
time, consensus version of the truth. the interview, well that's very
often "thunderdome" two men enter, one man leaves. It's a "best man
wins" version of the truth. When it comes down to it, I tend to be
a pragmatist. If a wiki proves to be the best tool for the job, use a
wiki. If a blog gets it done, blogit. Does a tweet work to get the
thing done? then tweet. phone call? email? press release? these all
are various species of the thing we call communication. not to mention
winks, nods, coughs, and twirling your hair between your fingers.

WRT plan B or any other product at OM, Sean and the design team will
announce they decide the time is right. It's not for me to pre-empt that.

[OM2009] Couple of troubles

2009-06-10 Thread ivanshirok...@gmail.com
Hello. Yesterday I've flashed new testing image of OM2009. Must say it
works pretty good.

But I've got a couple of problems:

1) Can't use Internet.
It successfully connects to bouth of my wifi routers, acquires DNS
servers so I can see them in /etc/resolv.conf.
But I cant ping any of internet addresses.
Even IP addresses =(

2) I've set alternative rendering method in illume (in advanced setup
options) and now it crashes on load. Can I fix it without reflashing FS?

3) And something wrong with yesterdays Qi build =)
When I'm trying to load to NAND AUX led lights for a second while
vibrator runs and then nothing happens.
The only way to load is through NOR or to connect to USB (FR starts to
load when USB connected).

Except from all of that, extremly slow interface and too long loading
time - great image. Many thanks =)

Re: Mokomapper.py: Script for easy OSM mapping on the road: mokomapper.py

2009-06-10 Thread Leonardo de Virgilio
I was writing something like that, but for the lacking of spare time
I've interrupted... my script in PyGtk was able to export tags
directly in .osm format, and used a little database to store tags
(with a feature to add/remove tags).

I think we could use this as a starting point... I'll try to see the
code in my future spare time ;)

Thanks for the link :D

[QtMoko] New debian images

2009-06-10 Thread Radek Polak

Hi Guys,
i have created new QtMoko images on debian rootfs. You can find them
together with some info on my site [1].

These images should give you:
- full debian system (over ssh)
- working calls/sms
- working gprs
- usable media player
- and lot of more features

In this new image QT was upgraded to version 4.5.1 and with attached
patch i have fixed the missing virtual keyboard in password fields. You
can find sources in my git branch qt451.

Another thing is qmplayer - media player that can play ogg/mp3/avi files
but is also able to download or stream media from PC. You can find more
info on qmplayer homepage [2].

Kernel is now based on packaging config. The kernel size is now under
2MB so it can be booted with u-boot.

We have also new logo [3] (thanks to my wife).

My plan for future is to merge other's GIT's - i am running build right
now, so we'll see if that worked :)

On the experimenting front - i was able to run TangoGPS and other X apps
via vnc. It was quite slow and mouse dragging wanst working, but still
quite usable.

Btw is anyone planning to release ready-to-flash QtMoko images for FSO?
I see there is just install script, but i would like to have image that
can be just flashed and booted.

Cheers

Radek

In the same breath as introducing Project B, Sean mentioned his
surprise at finding out how keen the "embedded community" were to get
a toy to develop on.

So I think it is a a touchscreen/cpu/bluetooth device that can
be used as a user-interface to any blue-tooth enabled tool
(phone, gps, whatever) and the target market is embedded devlopers
who want a cheap and open platform to do development on.
So:

   * Bluetooth enabled touch screen

(Sadly, I never managed to goad anyone into trying the inverted

To be more specific, it's /usr/share/paroli/applications/settings/settings.py

I can't believe how simple this is.

Awesome, thanks pike for this!! I really think you should create a new

Great to hear!

It'd be great if the app could directly export .osm format.

Do you have any screenshots or any code somewhere so others could have

Just a quick remark: please don't concentrate too much on
gta02-core when planning organizational structures for the
future.

The focus of gta02-core is not on making the next big phone but
on opening the process. The few pieces of hardware gta02-core
is planned to produce would be a proof of concept that we've
succeeded to meet that specific goal but they will likely be of
little practical interest to anyone who is looking for a
substantial improvement on the GTA02 as a day to day phone.

Once gta02-core is complete, there are several paths that could
lead to a mass-produced phone. Some could be very quick, others
quite slow. Mass-producing a phone requires a lot of money, so
at that stage, the direction would also depend on the goals of
investors or sponsors and on an assessment of the target
markets.

An organisational structure should allow us to keep assets
across projects. This will also encourage keeping technical
projects small and focused.

I use gta02-core as a reference when discussion specific needs,
because of the project's narrow scope. If a plan doesn't work
for gta02-core, it probably doesn't work at all. But a plan
that only works for gta02-core wouldn't be much better either.

One thing I don't understand:
intone with a2dp: mplayer usage around 40% and sometimes spikes to

how come?

Well the a2dp stuff seems to be fairly cpu intensive, presumably
because it's having to performing sbc encoding before sending the audio
to the device (most devices support direct streaming of mp3 data but I
don't think this is possible with mplayer, it is with gstreamer though).
You should still be able to get reasonable mp3 playback, you won't get
acceptable ogg playback though, as the combination of a2dp and ogg
decoding appears to be too much for the cpu to handle.

If you're getting very choppy playback with mp3s and you're using
bluez4 then try running "hciconfig hci0 lm master; hciconfig hci0 lp
hold, sniff, park" after starting the bluetooth daemon.

Cheers,
 Mike.

So, I need some time to find the error and implement coordinates catching... :|

I know my coding situation, and I grant you (and to all the community)

Good news: I'll applicate on that during summer, I'll release

Re: Openmoko planet go crazy???[fixed]

Dear community,

Sorry for the mess of the planet.

The feeds from wordpress is buggy on rss2(~/feed/ or ~/feed/rss2/), so I
changed all feed from wordpress.com to rss(~/feed/rss). By making this
change, the issue from rss2 is resolved. However, the rss feed doesn't
contained any timestamp info and the system assumes all the articles are
"new", which is the crazy planet you might see.

At this moment, I change the feed to atom(~/feed/atom/) which avoid the
issue on rss2 and rss. It looks nice and back to normal now.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Ray Chao.

The FR needs 5V, preferably at 500mA or 1A. If your charger can supply that
then making a jack adapter won't be a problem. Do NOT use a charger supplying
>5.5V as it will probably damage the FR. If your charger can give 1A then when
making the adapter you can put a 47k resistor between pin 4 and ground on the
mini-B connector. That lets the FR identify it as being able to take 1A so it
will automatically start charging at the full rate.

Car USB adapters are widely available though, and the USB mini-B connector is
used by a numer of phone manufacturers now. There were reports in the wiki
from people using TomTom and Motorola car chargers IIRC. The only problem you
may have is that there was no standard for the use of the ID pin (pin 4) so
the current capability may be incorrectly detected.

You don't need to. If you start logging, it will log data *only* if GPS
has 3d fix, and GSM data is available. You don't have to think about it.
If you lose the fix, you don't have to care about it.

Done in git tree. It now is "Start".

As explained before, if you go inside, you may let the app running, it
will log later, when it gets the GPS fix back, when you get out of the
building.

Precision: pressing "exit", first stops nicely the logger. No need to
press "stop" and then "exit".

If you had a different way with the train as with the car, and the same
length of travel, this number makes sense.

Agreed. We already talked about this. The maps visualisation of the
website is completely unfriendly to use (and I never use it, I use G.
earth). Of course we don't want to let it this way.

Indeed. Go somewhere on the map and see what cells are there. (possibly
with some filters (per operator, etc.).

As stated in a previous email, I have a working prototype for getting
your position out of GSM cell, locally on your phone. I hope someone
jumps in with a nice application to make use of this. I don't publish
it, because it is all very basic, but enough for someone wanting to use
it. Please contact me if interested.

We already had some thinking with Jan and Daniel. How to build something
in the way you describe.

Nick is working on proposing raw data (the log files my app creates) for
download on the Website.

We do have sql files, representing the cells positions and radius. This
is generated from the raw data. I use this file to build a sqlite file
on the phone, to be used by my prototype D-bus service, to get my position.

As stated in the previous emails, we encountered a hard drive failure.
Nick made a test run of the server. But it is not working as normal.

The logs should not be lost. They just have not been detected, and
processed by the (broken) server. Tweet is triggered when logs are detected.

  Does it say

When you see the tweet, it means the logs have started being processed.
You then have to check the main page of the website to see the last
update time updated.

I would like something like OSM: when you upload GPX file, you get an
email when it has been incorporated.

Oh, we don't have that. That's bad...

Connman doesn't set the default route if there is already one. If you do
"ifdown usb0" from the terminal then wifi will work as expected. Or you can
manually add the default route for wifi

Re: Freerunner's Future

2009-06-10 Thread Steve Mosher
I would offer this. The vision that Werner has, shared by a good number
of us
( hat tip to Dr Schaller) is to create a process whereby the design
effort can be
shared collaboratively. As I look at the EE design process it is currently
controlled at several points by closed proprietary systems. These
chains will
will not be broken all at once. Lets take the layout tool. Layout tools
are expensive
software. You may be a EE with a great idea, but your stuck in schematic
land
if you dont have a layout tool. Now the output of layout tools ( gerber
file) is
rather open and standard. There are many elements here where a
community effort
can help. At some point I will put something together to describe this
process,
the tools, the resources, and you can all see how close we are to an
open process.

If folks dont want to wait for me, they can pitch in and describe the
process themselves
and put it in the wiki.

So, generally speaking I'd say the mission is opening the design process
to allow for
collaborative open source hardware development.

On another thread people are speculating about Project B. some
interesting speculations.
Imagine a world where those speculations could be turned into working
prototypes
and then products.. all done the open source way. just a thought.

Golden Delicious offers GTA02A6+ and GTA02A7

2009-06-10 Thread Dr. H. Nikolaus Schaller
Dear all,
after organizing the Buzz rework service we have now upgraded our
remaining stock of GTA02A6 units so that you don't have to care about
rework if you buy a new device from us. And, we already have a handful
of the A7 retail units in stock. All our units still include the pouch
and the headsets. Most of them have the laser-stylus while some have a
pure stylus only (before you ask: we can't open the boxes to guarantee
a specific version).

Upgraded version (A6+): 279 EUR
Retail version (A7): 299 EUR

Thanks onen for all your answers, they cleared many unclear things. I
think it's essential for an FLOSS project leader / developer to
communicate with the users to create a community of users who
eventually will start contributing and support your work, see
http://aseigo.blogspot.com/2009/01/building-community-around-your-foss.html.

It's great to hear you're working on the client app as well as daemons
to do the locating. I hope someone (maybe omgps) will start using it
soon.

So without further comments, I'm looking forward to see the next version!

Wait a day or so. Testing5 will be released very soon and it'll
include fixes to many big bugs (suspend, gprs, can't receive calls,
that battery bug etc etc etc). AFAIK upgrading t4 will not take you
this far since there's been some radical package changes, too.

Enjoy your freedom!

According to the schematics of the FR, the ID line of the battery is
not connected to anything (R1769 is marked NC). I checked my FR rev A6
(from your shop Christoph!;)), and this resistor is not populated.
So it means the ID line of the battery is definitely not used.

Now I'm not saying it is safe to use whatever battery, i'm just saying
that the power management chip (the PCF 50633) is not able to read any
information out of the battery you fit in your FR (like battery ID,
serial number, etc...).

I would say that as long as you use a 3.7V single-cell Li-ion battery
that has built-in protection, it should be safe to test with your FR.
The only drawback you'll get is a longer charging time.

The FR is designed/programmed to charge at 500mA max. It should be
possible to change the charging rate in software (u-boot and/or
kernel), or perhaps by doing some HW mods.

I'm not a battery expert, complementary information welcome!

According to the FR battery page [1], they say that FR use a smart
battery (model number CT-GTA02 [2]) but i can tell you that i don't
have such a thing in my phone, i actually have a battery marked
"Model: GTA02", which is definitely not a smart battery (it has only 3
pins), this battery correspond more to what's describe on the Neo
battery page [3]. Moreover, the schematics of the FR show that it use
only 2 signals of the battery: V+ and V-.

I dont think it is true. Openmoko's battery is "special", it includes a coulumb
counter. And the battery indicator relies on it.
So inserting a nokia BL-5C battery is not complete solution. (because it lacks
the coulomb counter), and freerunner cant charge it (currently) and cant
display the remaining capacity.

The best person to ask are jOERG or Werner. They usually hangs on
#openmoko-cdevel and are very helpful people.

It is not true either.

1. Freerunner identifies the charger with a "magic" 47kOhm resistance
between D+ and D- line.
If the resistance is present it charges with 1000mA.

2. If the usb enumeration was successful it charges with 500mA (so
connecting to a computer charges with 500mA).

3. If none of the above happens, it defaults to 100mA.

The third terminal is used by a bit-banging HDQ driver which
communicates with bq27000 chip integrated in battery. And it works for
sure, though probably some eeprom values that should be
factory-programmed are not optimal.

Hi Laszlo,

You right, i was not sure if it was 500mA or 1A max. that's why i did
enclose my comments in between "not-really-sure" tags.

Anyway, 1A being the best-case charging current, it will still take
longer to charge a 2100mAh battery than a 1200mAh. (roughly 2 times
longer i guess)

At the moment to be able to see your uploaded cells on the maps, you have to
remember some non-obvious details (LAC/Cell ID) from when you uploaded. It
would be nice to have your own total cell count and maybe a selection of
recently uploaded cells as a table or map.

This has all been released before. See the FreeRunner HW wikipage (or

the largest size we could make and still pass CE. Believe me, we would

Most OE-based distributions now a days forbid ssh over wifi, so make
sure you're trying to do this over usb.

Otherwise, you know you are not supposed to enter 'blank' as a
password, right? So, just press enter when it asks for the password,
without typing in anything. If that's totally obvious, sorry, just
making sure ;)

I guess what I'm hoping for in regards to gta02-core and the community
organization would be some combination of these two things:

1. That the open source hardware development processes pioneered by
gta02-core get formalized as part of the structure of the new
organization
2. That the people who are working on the gta02-core will continue to
work together as part of the new community organization.

This would mean incorporating the lessons learned by the gta02-core
team into the new organization. It would also mean creating an
organization that can effectively facilitate this type of open
hardware development.

Of course, the community organization (heh... we need a name!) should
encompass more than just hardware. The open hardware part will likely
just be a part of what the organization does. There's also a need to
support and connect developers, themers, writers of documentation.
And of course there's end-users like me who could benefit from a
organization we can be a part of and connect with others through.

This might be a tall order to fill. If the organization is too
broadly focused it could end up going nowhere at all.

Re: First SSH to FR: Permission denied

2009-06-10 Thread Mike
Thanks for the suggestion --

I changed the password to blank and restarted FR, but that did
not work, unfortunately.

any other ideas?

Other than making sure you've got the right IP, no. Sorry.

a starting point for a community organization charter on the wiki

2009-06-10 Thread Jeremy McNaughton
Hi Everyone,

I've started a (very rough) draft charter for the community
organization on the wiki here:

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Community_Charter

With a little help this could eventually become our charter for a
sub-group of Linux International.

The stuff I've written there are all just ideas that can be completely
changed. We have the opportunity to create a brand new organization,
so don't be afraid to raise questions, concerns, or ideas. It's
important that we create an organization that works. It needs to work
to further our collective goals, and it needs to work for everyone
involved. That includes you!

There are scores of successful, community based FLOSS organizations
out there, and some not so successful ones that we can hopefully learn
lessons from. If you admire a particular project for the way it runs
things, please tell the rest of what we can learn from them.
Potential pitfalls that can be avoided, ingenious ways of financing,
anecdotes about do's and don'ts for encouraging community
involvement... all of this and more can help us work towards building
a great organization.

As a side note, I've only just come out of lurking. Since I haven't
been actively involved up this point, I just want to say that I don't
want to step on anyone's toes. If anyone feels I have crossed a line
somewhere, please let me know. I assure everyone that I don't want to
be in charge, in fact I'd prefer members with more experience take on
leadership roles. Organizational development is just a sort of a
passion for me. Not that anyone has given me reason to think this.
All I'm saying is, I know I'm new here and don't expect any sort of
overnight credibility.

Anyways, here's to some engaging discussions that will lead to a
prosperous future for open telephony!

My guess is a portable media player... reverse, play/pause, and forward.

Wouldn't have been a video showing the fade rate of the LCD, would it?

Heh, I made no such promises. :P
