Hey, do you really believe using some electronic device (including
various radio transmitters) might be unsafe on an airplane?

Those stupid agencies prohibit bringing water on board but don't do
anything (except a polite warning) about oh-they-are-so-dangerous
"electronic devices"?

Come on.

Re: Why one cannot recommend the freerunner as a daily phone

2009-06-21 Thread Timo Juhani Lindfors

Thanks for reminding us about the issues that still exist. However,
you should really report them as bugs so that they don't get lost and
can be analyzed better.

Joerg Lippmann writes:
> - The device wakes up too slowly, I lost some calls.

Confirmed, ringtone is sometimes played few seconds (<10) later than
you'd expect.

I think this slowness is mostly due to userland. What if you

1) before suspend mute speaker
2) before suspend start aplay to play the ringtone
3) on resume check
/sys/class/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/0-0073/neo1973-resume.0/resume_reason
4) if resume reason is GSM, unmute speaker
5) if resume reason is not GSM, kill aplay and then unmute speaker

instead of waiting for ogsmd to interpret what calypso has to say?

> - The volume is way to low, You can really only use it indoors.

That's tricky but tunable. Do you have buzz-fixed version?

Using
http://docs.openmoko.org/trac/attachment/ticket/2121/gsmhandset.state.new
and finding a good value for AT+CLVL during a call should help. Your
dialer might be settings AT+CLVL to a bad value?

Confirmed although I really don't have another device to compare with.

In suspend it should last a day easily. What's in current_now file
immediately after resume?

Bug #2277 Wireless does not work with the 2.6.29 kernel

I'm a happy user of xvkbd. My layout is
http://iki.fi/lindi/openmoko/XVkbd-lindi -- I don't use a wordlist.

Ah, that makes the volume issue also difficult. Get the fix and then
tune the volume!

> - The alarm clock does not work reliably.

You should report that as a bug so that we can determine if it's a
hardware, kernel or userland problem. I'm just using a tool that
issues RTC_WKALM_SET to /dev/rtc0

Confirmed. This could be fixed by having e.g. u-boot force 500 mA
charging mode, show the user current charge and current and also maybe
dim the display so that most energy really goes to the battery?

most if not all vibrators i have known i cellphones were _way_ weaker --
most notably the treo650's, which made me lose more calls than the fr

dunno, what you mean by "couple of hours", i get at least 48h standby,
crashing and leaving th fr in a unsuable state happens every couple of
month. i say, that's a rate other devices have too.

no problem here, but i use zhone and tweaked it to read not from sim but
vcf file.

true

compared with a plam, that's true -- but then, the palms were never able
to do multi tasking.

no problems here, i use matchbox-keyboard, which is sufficient for my
needs. and i am no friend of completion either.

far to general -- what software/distribution are you talking about?

don't know, i never used them. in the beginning there were no working
alarms and i bought a little alarm clock, which is the only use i have for
alarms anyway.

not more than about 1h -- after that the fr is able to boot and you can
access it.

ever checked avaliable sw repos? debian has all kinds of sw available and
thus even pim, the integration with other apps (namely calling/sms) is
indeed missing so far.
and with those apps you can sync the same way you would eg a laptop's pim

see above. if you can't find apps for non-debian distris, it's most likely
because of the fact that no one missed the really so far and cared to
create them. i for one don't miss those.

i don't say (like you do) "it is ready. period", but i say "it is ready

the satellite overlay (wich, I think, for street-mapping, it isn't

Yes if I start Literki and select keyboard None (for Default keyboard it
works with no problem) I got Enlightenment Error (SEGV). For coming

segfaults only once (Elementary does try to reenter fullscreen after new

I get a lot of Enlightenment SEGV with recent shr-unstable and om2009
testing. This happens when Tangogps or Omgps try to go fullscreen and when I
touch the top panel in Woosh. The recover option doesn't work, I have to
restart X.

Because i use the latest andy-tracking (in debian) for a few months now

the problem is the kernel or wpa_supplicant or something else. Last time
it worked was with the deprecated 2.6.24 kernel series. :(

PISI 0.3 released

2009-06-21 Thread Michael Pilgermann
We just released PISI 0.3.

Contacts synchronization was extended by SIM (via DBUS) support - making
it available to SHR users. Python 2.6 is supported as well (including
all dependency packages).

Contacts Synchronization currently supports
- SIM Card via DBUS (e.g. SHR)
- QTopia SQLite (e.g. OM 2008.12)
- LDAP (read only)
- VCF files (local and webdav), and
- Google Contacts

Calendar synchronization supports
- Google Calendar, and
- ICalendar files (local and webdav)

Update "Who is who" on wiki

2009-06-21 Thread Fabian Killus
I recall that ages ago many people on this list were complaining that
Openmoko wasn't as open as they had promised. They felt not informed
about what was going on behind the curtain of core development. When
everything is turned over to the community now, it is our chance to do
better.

As proposed before on this list it would be a good idea to update the
information at http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Who_is_Who. While I am
afraid to touch this page directly, here is what I would have so far:

Kernel:
- Nelson Castillo
- Luca Capello
- ?

FSO (freesmartphone.org):
- Michael Lauer (Mickey)
- Jan Luebbe (Shoragan)
- Daniel Willmann (Alphaone)
- Stefan Schmidt

Om2009:
- Angus Lee
- ?

Paroli:
- Mirko Lidner

SHR:
- ?

Xorg glamo:
- Thomas White

Please help completing this list.

QtMaze - Mokomaze 0.2 for Qt Extended

2009-06-21 Thread ANT

Hi,

All we know that the only thing that stops people from use of Qt Extended as
main distro is lack of Mokomaze :)
I've decided to learn QtE a little and already rewrited Mokomaze 0.2 to use
Qt. The port is named QtMaze and there are its benefits:
 * it works
 * it can be included in distro ;)

Anti-dim-and-suspend functionality is built in and seems to work fine.
Up-to-date extended levelpack is also included.
There is a new feature: keep level switching button pressed to
fast-forward/fast-rewind.

Known problem: the game will go to fullscreen mode properly only after
enabling/disabling screen lock.

There is a demonstration video on youtube [1].
You can find screenshots as well as download links and installation
instructions on QtMaze's page [2].

However I also don't like lying to people - so if I got hassled by the

There are now 11 members in SHR coreteam:
ptitjes, mrmoku, dos1 (that's me! ;D), spaetz, TAsn, Deubeuliou,

Most of guys working on SHR are mentioned in Ainulindale's

Absolutely - certainly before my own name. What me (and Andreas, and
hopefully a few others) are doing is really just experimental at this
stage. Lars is the one providing real useful code at the moment.

Agreed. FreeRunner is my only phone as well.

> been my experience.  Perhaps I'm just lucky, having bought a later
> model unit,

I've one from the first batches (GTA02a5), nothing wrong with sound
after the buzz fix. I believe that's just either a rumor based on the
buzz problems of the past or wrong default ALSA settings (current SHR,
Om2009, Debian I believe should be better than before).

It's completely correct to say Neo is still not for everyone, but it
is also likewise correct to say it's very usable for day-to-day phone
usage for some people.

It's also possible to "leave it as is" if one doesn't want to tweak /
hack it for a while. In the winter I think I didn't touch anything
from ca. December to late February, just used it. I had my tweaked
Om2008.12 back then. Meanwhile, Om2009 looks like quite usable
out-of-the-box already - I've it as a dual-boot together with Debian
which I use mainly, and Om2009 is just simply usable. The latest test
version seems to offer quite a bit of flexibility as well if one
enables the "serenity" theme from the display settings menu.

I hope I didn't give the impression that I thought Joerg's message was
FUD. I think calling "FUD" can too often be an ad hominem attack.
Although I disagree with some of Joerg's statements, it's clear that
he's trying to help and is being honest about the Freerunner's value
to him, personally.

I want to thank Joerg for taking the time to give a clear list of
reasons why a person might consider the Freerunner unsuitable as a
phone. I think it'd be helpful if these and other points were put on
the wiki so that potential buyers can see the arguments against the
Freerunner, and what the community response is. (E.g., Solved?
Kludged? In progress? Unfixable?)
