I re-read my previous message and I think this part can be confusing:

*it rings*: means that I hear the ring on the phone from I was calling
(don't know how to make it more clear, but I think you have the point now)

QtMoko - QtBackup

2009-10-13 Thread ghislain

Hi,

I just released a new small backup-application (which is not in the QtMoko
feeds yet). This little application creates a qtbackup.tgz on the sdcard.
The application itself can only create backups, not restore. I've added the
restore function to the QtMoko installer-kernel, this kernel checks, after
flashing the rootfs, if the qtbackup.tgz file is available and if it is it
extracts this file in the root of the freshly flashed rootfs. As you can
guess, the main purpose of this little app is te keep settings,
applications, contacts etc over new versions.

The program I wrote just calls a shell-script wich contains the follwing
command:
cat qtbackup.conf | xargs tar zcf /media/card/qtbackup.tgz > /dev/null 2>&1

The file qtbackup.conf currently has the following lines in it:
/home/root
/var/lib/bluetooth
/usr/share/navit/navit.xml
/root/.gconf

You can already try this app if you add a new feed with the following url:
http://www.openmobile.nl/media/qtmoko
I already created an installer-version with the restore function:
http://www.openmobile.nl/pages/downloads.php#qtm14b QtMoko V14B

Can someony please tell me how to get this app in the QtMoko feeds? (Radek?)
And of course I would like to upload the source to some git, qtmoko-apps on
github? (Sektor?)

Re: Buy WikiReader [was: WikiReader]

2009-10-13 Thread William Lai
All,
I spent the whole morning trying to get international fixed-rates from USPS
for global shipping, but there is a downside, as there always is:

a) standard shipments can take 10-20 days
b) there are NO tracking numbers provided by USPS

The flat rate is $18.95 usd. I think this is especially reasonable compared
to some of the prices in UPS (those of you who bought phones from us in the
beginning know exactly what I'm talking about). These rates are available
now and Sean tells me we just updated the site so:

http://thewikireader.com/store

Help yourself :)
And when you DO buy one, please make sure to post back to this list the
actual time it took you to get your package. That would help everyone out a
lot on actual shipping times. Again, thanks for not being patient and
kicking our butts when something's missing.

Cheers,
Will

I would be intereset with 1 (maybe 2) Freerunners.

If there is the possibility to also apply the buzz and bass fixes then
I would also be interested in that.

And last but not least if some people are interested in the 'party-part'
then I would probably join the fun.

Thanks for organizing it.

2009-10-13 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
http://code.google.com/p/wikipediardware/

tells us:

The project's goal is to provide a bunch of software:

* a set of bootloaders which load a small kernel image from SD
card and execute it.
* wiki-lib, a library which contains all the application's logic
* gui-lib, a very thin layer to provide glyph rendering and font
file parsing
* some simulators (Qt/Cocoa/ncurses) which emulate the hardware to
make development easy
* the 'kernel' code which is only a small wrapper around the
hardware and uses wiki-lib and gui-lib
* host based tools to generate the content from Wikipedia sources
(indexing, font file generation, ...)

Especially I'm interested in the first one - the kernel image is
loaded from SD -> to me it sound's like a hackable device.

Thanks, I didn't know that. I followed up on the D state, and found
that it usually indicates a kernel or device driver problem. Based on
that, and the facts that I had to shutdown several times by pulling
the battery out, and that the way I installed Debian wasn't completely
vanilla (I tried to install into an existing partition), I decided
that it would probably be a good idea to reinstall from scratch, and
I've now done that.

I'm afraid I didn't check these before reinstalling.

I was running from the first partition of a micro-SD card. No swap
partition, but post-installation I had prepared a 200Mb swap file on
/dev/mmcblk0p2. I hadn't added a mount and swapon for this to
/etc/rc.local, so it wasn't being used during the boot. I did the
mount and swapon later - I think after I'd already tried starting
Emacs, and that had hung - and it didn't appear to make any difference
(apart from top reporting the available swap).

That looks like a red herring / misunderstanding to me. IIUC, it was
resolved some months ago by an apm-emulation script that calls the
dbus API.

Post-reinstall, openmoko-panel-plugin is showing a believable battery
status, and responds to plugging in the USB cable, and I'm pretty sure
that it did that for a while after my first install too. So I guess I
must have broken it by one of my first install experiments.

>> - ssh (via USB) not working.  The desktop end looks fine:

Similar situation here. Post-reinstall, working fine.

So, right now I've reinstalled from scratch, with
QI=true
SD_SWAP_SIZE=512
TASKS=
./install.sh all

My problem now is no GSM - which was also the case after my previous
install - with the symptoms being that
- Zhone briefly says "Usage: Requested resource GSM with error" (or a
permutation of those words)
- Zhone's phone, messages and contacts buttons stay greyed out.

I've rebooted twice since reinstallation, so it isn't a first-boot problem.

GSM works fine on OM2009/Paroli (in NAND), so it isn't a SIM-seating problem.

I don't have a PIN, so it isn't a PIN entry problem.

Any ideas?

I wonder if I've got all the packages installed that I should have:

Source code (wikipediardware) is already known, other things were at
http://people.openmoko.org/ . Dunno if they still are, as I didn't
check it recently, but in some directory there were Windows app for
viewing attached 3D case design, and it was exactly that case ;) Also
there were some movie clips about used screen. Look for SAMO keyword

GREAT JOB!

I would advice to tag and git push --tags, that would make github
automagically generate tarballs for the releases available in

http://github.com/crei/evopedia/downloads

Would it be possible also to sanitize dumps to exclude images and
provide those from your webpage (as well as full dumps)? that
might make english version fit within available free space on my SD ;)

else:
status = "WiFi Power Off"
label.set_text(status)
label.modify_fg(gtk.STATE_NORMAL, gtk.gdk.color_parse("red"))

return True

def wifi_on(self, button):
os.system("mdbus -s org.freesmartphone.ousaged

Performance is definitely an issue, and Michael Trimarchi has very

significantly. Please feel free to log issues like this on the tracker

I agree. It's on the community list so it's fair game for the community
update.

The only cautionary note is to remember to back up any modified state files
since there is a report of a messed up state that we haven't got to the bottom

I thought you were in Poland, that's why i mentioned Ostrava.. probably
4-5 hours drive from Warsaw.

He is a professional doing this daily. I am sure he would not accept
warranty as such but as he is a close friend, we could guarantee his

As mentioned previously, we would test on one piece first, confirm, then
we would run the test script on all three pieces done.

BTW, you can see how he has done the buzz fix for us (sleek design in
placing the cap) and has taken a few shots on his work photo microscope:
http://vanous.penguin.cz/files/om/SOP/

Let me see how fast we can move - have one testing piece be done and
tested this week.

Perhaps this will get other czech guys inspired, they are a bit slower
needing the fixes :)

Hey,

Sending to Czech Republic would be definitely easier as there are no customs
involved (I'm in Poland). Does the person you've got provide any guarantees
for the rework? Would you guys test my FR to see if the recamping is gone
before you send it back?

Although not necessarily well.
I tried some puzzle game I downloaded from AndAppStore. It ran horribly slow.
I didn't think the Freerunner was much slower than the G1. Anyone

Hi Michal,

where are you sending it from? We have been planning a small 2FR
session here in Czech republic with a profi guy who previously has done
the buzz fix. We are not too far from Ostrava anyways, we would
like to do one piece first asap, then after confirming, we could have

Check your options, if shipping to and from CZ could be cheaper...

Simply AMAZING!

Good idea Sean, really. I'm sure that it will be 100% hackable, it's
even without GSM blob!
It will be converted also in a good e-book reader, i presume. It's also
a really good idea to make co-marketing with Wikipedia, finally some
business that works. I expect a good success especially from students
and young people.

Please, send us some more technical specification, real photos, etc etc.
What's about the LCD? It's an e-ink o what kind of technology that
consume so low power?

When it will be shipped to Europe?

Anyway, my congratulation: you and Openmoko demonstrated that making

RE: Tips when GSM doesn't work

2009-10-13 Thread Niels Heyvaert

Don't know if it is related to your problem, but my FR recently hit the carpet
after a fall of 75cm. No big deal, you would say.

However, since then, the GSM connection is unpredictable and unreliable. A
problem which I did not face before the device fell down. Sometimes a reboot
resolves it, but it might require multiple reboots before connecting to the GSM
network. Also tried re-inserting the SIM a few times, but that does not resolve
the issue either.

Did your FR suffer from an impact? Or do you think your problem is software
related?

Subject: Tips when GSM doesn't work

What I'm doing was:
it happens to me few hours ago, I was renaming icons of the desktop so I can
have them in the order I want
when I was editing pidgin.desktop I save the file (I was connected via SSH) and
got an error message that give me two choices: Restart - Stop
I press Stop and it goes to the terminal and hangs on a message: restarting
xserver
so I power down by removing the battery (I know, the ugly way) and wait a few
seconds to put it back again. When I power on the FR again, when SHR starts, I
don't have GSM services
I let the FR without any intervention a few minutes and it never get GSM
active, I tried restarting frameworkd and it doesn't do anything

Hi Ben,
for all those outside Switzerland and inside EU harmonized market (the
reason to differentiate is customs complexity with export/reimport) we

Hi

Is this for people outside Switzerland? Also, can you do the bass fix
too?

Cheers

Looks like it's just in time for an Xmas gift.

Congratulations! All that's lacking is a hacking-howto :)

Re: WikiReader

2009-10-13 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Congrats, interesting device!

1) What CPU you use?
2) Does it support multiple language versinos of Wikipedia?
3) What's the format the data is stored in?
4) Is the OS on the uSD card?
5) Open source - how do we hack it? No USB connector -> can the
software be altered?

Tell us the specs!!!

Thanks!

This is great, congratulations on the launch! The device sounds
interesting, and the price is affordable.

As I understand, it contains a snapshot of English Wikipedia. Can I
somehow make a snapshot of a different wiki, for example, Russian
Wikipedia, and put it on the device? Other MediaWiki-based installations?
What about non-wiki books, can I convert them to a format the device
understands?

I've long wanted to get myself a e-ink device, but hesitate to get one
that can only do one thing, read English Wikipedia. To what extent is it
hackable?
