Looks like something new. It isn't quite clear to me what semantics
they attach to Open, in particular whether the openness is supposed
to come from the mere fact of being an x86 platform and inherently
PC-ish, or whether it also means an absence of binary kernel modules
and similar kinds of joy. Or it could just mean that they'll license
the design to anyone, which would indeed be more open than anything
else on the market, even though at a different level.

I'd also be curious about battery life. If they've indeed managed to
make an x86-based phone with a battery life that compares to a good
ARM-based one, that would be very impressive.

There's of course also the question to what extent x86 matters for
mobile phones today. In terms of processing power, already ARM seems
to offer more than enough for most purposes. In terms of
compatibility, they don't seem to aim for straight PC-compatibility
anyway, and the concept of an app store, having been given a very
pronounced shape by Apple, has changed the landscape.

Community Updates/2010-04-01

Period 2010-03-01 to 2010-03-31

** Distributions **

Debian GNU/Linux

Debian (http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Debian) is a universal operating
system used on many other embedded devices, and also on home
computers. Using Debian on the FreeRunner gives access to the Huge
army of software packaged in the Debian repositories, already compiled
for the Neo's arm(v4) processor. Moreover, one can build one's own
source files for programs without having to learn the OpenEmbedded
way. For an existing Debian/Ubuntu user, choosing Debian for Neo
FreeRunner makes phone a very familiar, trustworthy and flexible place
to hack in.

The following new noteworthy packages have appeared in the pkg-fso
repository, a staging area for FreeRunner related packages not yet in
official Debian:
- literki (http://pkg-fso.nomeata.de/sid/literki), keyboard with
configurable layout and transparency
- woosh (http://pkg-fso.nomeata.de/sid/woosh), minimalistic browser
optimized for touch screens
- libdrm-glamo (http://pkg-fso.nomeata.de/sid/libdrm-glamo1),
userspace interface to glamo-specific kernel DRM services, more info
at http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/pkg-fso-maint/2010-March/002731.html

Each of the above has varying reasons they are not yet uploaded to
official Debian archives. Literki included a version of png++ in its
sources, and png++ has now been separated and literki will soon follow
it to official Debian archives. The future of woosh browser is a bit
uncertain, so it's waiting a bit eg. for a better replacement.
Finally, libdrm-glamo is naturally waiting for the eventual inclusion
of Glamo code in an upstream release, together with the hopeful
integration of all Glamo code in upstream (Torvalds') Linux kernel.

Besides applications, the following FSO components have been recently
uploaded to official Debian archives: libphone-utils
0.1+git20091220-2, libgsm0710_1.2.1+git20100218-1,
libfsobasics_0.9.0+git20100304-2, libfsoframework_0.2.4+git20100222-1,
libfsotransport_0.9.5.9+git20100308-1,

[wikireader] - combined dutch + english update

2010-04-06 Thread Job W. J. Snijders
Hello fellow wikireaders,

I rendered a combined dutch + english update for the wikireader which you can
download from my website. I plan on building one every one or two months.

Version information:

Dutch: 20100327 (downloaded rendered with the help of Christopher Hall :-)
English: 20100204 (the version that was on the SD card when OM shipped it to me)
FIrmware: 20100204 (the version that was on the SD card when OM shipped it to
me)

You can switch between the two encyclopedias if you press the 'search' button
and then press the 'globe icon' on the touchscreen.

Download the ~ 5 gigabyte in .tar.gz or .rar format:
http://snijders-it.nl/wikireader/

The cool thing is, there still is about 3.5 gigabyte of free space left on the
memory card, i wonder what to do with that space :-)

Kind regards,

It's supposed to be Intel's Moorestown, which is aimed, I guess, at
ARMs, so it should be comparable, at least.

The issue is really what they mean by open. Nokia N900 is *not* open
even if you can install another OS not blessed by Nokia, as important
functionality is clearly missing.

Same goes for many other open phones around the spot.

The issue is really what they mean by open.

So far I think it means we have not restricted flashing different
software on the device, the restrictions can be added by you, our
future customer with deep pockets, who will be selling the actual
end-user hardware to people. I'll be glad if it would turn out
otherwise and be more concretely about freedoms.

which of intel's hardware does not have open source, intel supported,
 drivers?

The embedded graphics hardware they have licensed from powervr. ie.
poulsbo / GMA 500. Powervr chips are used on about all embedded
platforms, be it as part of Intel's poulsbo or independently. There is
no pure intel graphics hardware usable on embedded platforms. All of
powervr related graphics stuff is currently worse than even smedia
glamo regarding the state of free software drivers.

I'm also not sure if there is any Intel WLAN hardware suitable for
devices of this size (and battery power).

if they really make all drivers available (as with their graphic adaptors
and wifi), it would be more open than the freerunner, wouldn't it?

If, and a strong if, then software-wise yes. I'm quite sure Aava can
do nothing to affect PowerVR, if even Intel, Nokia and Canonical have
not been able to squeeze free, functional and maintained drivers out
of there so far.

Then there is also the hardware schematics and CAD side of things,
where FreeRunner has also a degree of freedoms. Of course the software
side is the most interesting for us software people.

2010-04-06 Thread Mike Crash

It's up to everyone to try and cry.

But for me - I want functionality, that is not present in both navit and
tangogps. And I want functionality, that is not present in any navigation I
know.

1. Create route by clicking on crossroads - I need it for cycling (not
implemented yet)
2. Sport tester with stopwatch, distance meter and track log (running,
cycling), what I missing is pulse meter (what about bluetooth sensor?)
3. show tourist roads and cycle roads (not implemented yet)
4. switch different views of map - car/cycle/foot/... (not implemented yet)
5. save and upload track logs to web
6. contours
and anything what I find usefull

I know, I'm at the beginning. And if someone finds it useful, I will be
glad.

And what about TangoGPS? Very good bitmap navigation, I use it too, but
needs large amount of data to download, hard to update maps, no navigation
at all etc.
And navit? On freerunner unusable, very slow redraw, very slow routing, ugly
voice, hard to extendible

Looking to pick up a FreeRunner

2010-04-06 Thread swoody
Hello OpenMoko fans :)

I hope this post isn't out of line, but Craigslist and eBay were of no use.

I am in a bit of a predicament with my current, closed (bleh!) cell phone.
The screen stopped working, and incoming and outgoing calls have ceased as
well. I tried to have it replaced through my cellular carrier, but they are
trying to blame it on me saying that it must be abuse to the phone - with
the condition the phone is in physically, this is obviously not the case. So
I am rather ticked off with them. The good news is that this is a great
opportunity for me to finally make the jump to a *free* phone. Having been a
user of *Free* GNU/linux distros - Trisquel and gNewSense - my cell phone is
the last device I own that isn't GPL-friendly. I am hoping to use this
opportunity as a chance to learn more in the way of developing and getting a
chance to truly enjoy the benefits of *free* software.

Unfortunately, this is a pretty bad time as I can't afford to lay out
$200USD for a new FreeRunner. I'm a full-time student, and funds are indeed
short. I was hoping somebody out there may have an extra FreeRunner, or know
someone who is looking to part with one. I have no problems with
non-buzz-fixed models, as I would be very interested in doing this hack
myself, but I am equally open to the models with this fix. If you can help
me out here, or if you know someone who is looking to part ways with a
FreeRunner, I would truly appreciate if you got in touch with me. Please
feel free to email me directly if you wish, rather than replying to the
entire mailing list.

Thank you all in advance, and happy hacking!
