Yes.

I check status of Openmoko and come to the result:
 OM Inc.: zombie

Mostly, but especially they have moved away from phones to other areas.

 Community: nearly dead

Not true. The problem is just that Openmoko the distribution is no
more, and Openmoko the company is no more a phone company. People have
now moved to distribution communities like SHR, Debian or QtMoko, and
this so-called Openmoko community, what remains of it, is basically a
set of people possibly caring of wiki.openmoko.org content, hardware
owners that want to sometimes have a glance on whatever new
distributions there are for the FreeRunner (like me) or people having
belief Openmoko Inc. will come up with other interesting non-phone
gadgets like the Wikireader.

But mostly it always was about FreeRunner owners wanting to have
official software distribution usable on their phones, but then the
effort was stopped and moved to mostly SHR, which has its own forums.

sales: 2/week (talking as the major distributor)

Probably not that many FreeRunners sold at this point of time indeed,
but I think many are currently interested in the pre-fixed versions,
ie. #1024 and bass fix also included. If I'd be buying a new phone,
like I just did with another FreeRunner, I'd enjoy that the hardware
bugs, as many as possible, would be already fixed. FreeRunner had a
good amount of those...

lets wake up, the game is over :-(

It has only begun in my opinion :) Neo FreeRunner is still the only
phone (really) usable with free software like the FSO via SHR, Debian
etc., but within a year we should some of the current development
efforts on other devices - HTC Dream, Nokia N900, Palm Pre etc. -
bring some more mature status where people can flash / reinstall their
device and just use it as a phone. Before I can use Debian
problem-free including phone functionality on some other device, I
cannot see myself moving from FreeRunner to any other device.

With luck, we will some more free-software friendly phone products
coming out as well, to be a better continuation of the pioneering work
Openmoko Inc's devices started and indeed not being a game over for
resellers that did have some business being an Om Inc delivery
channel.

[ANN] GTA02-Reworks Freerunners with all fixes already applied

2010-04-08 Thread Dr. H. Nikolaus Schaller
Dear all,
just in case you did not notice, we are now offering three different
rework services to improve what Openmoko, Inc. could no longer continue:

a) Buzz-Fix (only needed for A5 and A6 models) to solve a GSM buzz
signal in the microphone sound path
b) #1024 fix to protect the GSM TI Calypso system from self-reset when
trying to go into deep sleep (improves battery standby time)
c) Bass-Fix improves the low-frequency output for the Headset Jack

We offer them all separately or in any combination.

And, we have applied b) and c) to stock devices that came right from
the factory:

GTA02A7++ #1024 and Bass fix applied
GTA02A7+#1024 fix applied (sufficient if you are not interested in
listening sounds on a headset)

More information:
http://www.handheld-linux.com/wiki.php?page=1024-Rework
http://www.handheld-linux.com/wiki.php?page=Neo%20Freerunner

And, we are constantly working to improve the Freerunner, so be
prepared for further announcements.

I'm selling one Freerunner ver. A6 - shipping to Italy and Europe

2010-04-08 Thread -= Apertum =-

   Hello to all,

I'm selling one of my two Neo Freerunner GTA02 Ver.A6, because of limited time
to play with.

It's fully functional and it has been used as my daily phone for some month.
Now i have a N900 and i'll use my second Freerunner only to experiment.
The display it's without scratches at all. I've bought from Pulster the device
in march 2009, V6 version. No buzz-fix, but i never seen any problem with that
here in Italy (my GSM operator is Wind-Infostrada), also from people that i'm
calling.

I'm selling the FreeRunner with following accessories:

- 512 MB micro SD
- original battery 1200mAh, in a good state (used as daily phone only form 2-3
month)
- original power adapter + plug multi-standard
- Stylus pen from Pulster

If you are interested i'm selling it for 99 euros + Shipping fees to Italy or
Europe (i'll use a standard insured shipping, not expansive). If anyone
interested, contact me.

Thanks, have a nice day! :-)

Christoph Pulster wrote:
project customers: gone, disappointed of all the bugs and problems

Whether the bugs and problem really bother project customers should
depend a lot on what their specific plans are. E.g., if they plan to
have their own user interface anyway, they wouldn't care much about
any flaws in the existing ones.

However, if I was a project customer, what would scare me most is
that the hardware is no longer being produced and that there's no
follow-on product I could switch to.

The more a project customer plans to invest into the platform, be it
in units purchased or in their own development effort, the more they
need the assurance that their effort won't be wasted. A product
that's already discontinued makes a horrible basis for this.

So I'm not exactly surprised that you don't have hordes of project
customers banging at your door, begging for more FreeRunners.

lets wake up, the game is over :-(

It's always nice to compare the views of the distributors.

Hmm, what kind of movie character would best reflect the typical
attitude of each ? :) How about

- Pulster: perhaps Marvin the Paranoid Android ?
- Golden Delicious: definitely Angus McGuyver
- Tuxbrain: I'm struggling with this one, Sister Mary Clarence ?

though.

Also, I appreciate all the suggestions and pointers to other phones for
sale, but I have acquired a FR which should be arriving today - thanks to
a very generous person :)

 Hey Woody,

Just a word of warning - the FR is a very fun device to play with -
but if you expect it to be a fully functioning phone, you will
probably be disappointed. I tried to use it as my cell phone for a
long time, and found it *very* frustating - regularly missed calls and
had to reboot it because it had hung.

Which distro were you using? I recommend QtMoko because it is the best
and only usable distro I have found. Make sure you use QtMoko v19 or
higher, though, because earlier versions miss some incoming SMS
messages, including notifications of new voice mail, until QtEI is
restarted. I do not recommend QtMoko v18, even though it is newer than
v19, because v18’s 2.6.32 kernel lacks support for both RNDIS and USB
mode changing.

I've been using an N900 for a couple of months now, and am very happy
with it - isn't quite as open as the FR, but it is open *enough* for
me, and it *works*...Of course if laying out $200 for an FR is a
problem, then the N900 is probably out of reach...

The N900 lacks USB Host support at the hardware level. I guess this
does not matter to you, but I might miss it because I have used USB Host
multiple times on my FR.

Anyway, I had a disappointing and frustrating experience with my FR too
until I discovered QtMoko because all of the distros I tried before
QtMoko (Om 2008.x, Om 2009, SHR (misnomer++;)) were unusable.

swoody: If you get an FR, please try QtMoko first. That way, if you
decide to try other distros later, you can at least compare them to
something usable (QtMoko).

Thanks for the advice :) I will see what OS the phone comes with, and I'll
play around with that for a bit. Then I will give QtMoko a try and see how
that works out. Reading over the disto info on the wiki it seems like
QtMoko is the crowd favorite, so I'm hoping it will be reliable as well :)

Re: [ANNOUNCE] eStarDict

2010-04-08 Thread Mike Crash

Hello,

for Debian users, estardict is packaged for Neo at this repository:

deb http://www.gps-routes.info/debian sid main

It works good with Longman dictionary, but I have tried with czech-english
dictionary [1], but it doesn't works, it says incompatible dictionary (or
something like that). But it seems like good stardict dictionary, or not?

Yes the engine of the eStarDict program, for now, considers only the
most popular
dictionary type.
The dictionary, that you want to use, is formatted in a Pango markup.
I'll try to add the Pango rendering in the next eStarDict version.

Best regards,

I'm trying to solve this issue. It seems like elementary has changed the
way genlists are populated leading to this crash.
The 'FATAL: Module snd_pcm_oss not found' can be ignored for now - with
the module CPU usage is lower - but right now that is not the problem.

project customers (was Re: beautiful qt based)

So I'm not exactly surprised that you don't have hordes of project

Perhaps I should clarify that I don't mean to make fun of your
situation. We're all in the same boat here.

But I think it's important to be aware that this kind of completely
non-technical issue can disqualify the product for project
customers.

The irony here is that the openness as such would be a very strong
point in favour of something like the FreeRunner, especially for
those with long-term plans, and it's sad that we (as in those who
believe in the ideas behind the Openmoko project) have missed this
opportunity so far.

Of course, where something isn't right, there's also an opportunity
to do better :-)
