Indeed, the device itself can work on a voltage lower than the
Calypso's minimum. I'm not sure if anyone has accurate measurements of
that though.

Now that I have been trying V24 for some days, I can confirm the following:

1. I now have good call volumes and no distortion after setting audio
values via neocontrol and they are remembered across reboots if you
use the save option. Very happy.

2. Power Management
- does not detect current state .e.g. battery or AC. When AC plugged
in, still says on battery
- after suspend, state shows locked despite never going to lock. If
one goes to lock and then unlocks, power mgmt still shows state as
locked. Locked state goes to battery after attaching usb cable and
charging starts.

3. Unfortunately and the biggest show stopper for me, is I am still
experiencing sporadic GSM connectivity issues. This is not new though,
afaik this started as an issue sometime after v16. It would be
interesting to see if anyone else experiences these or knows a
workaround. If you want me to provide logs or you want to give me step
by step instructions for test cases, I'm happy to be a guinea pig to
resolve these issues once and for all:
- sometimes stays searching for network, multiple restart of QT does
not clear it even when 3 bars or better are shown in signal meter on
left.
- sometimes after device reboot no network but then seems to
connect, however sometimes shows signal and carrier but cannot
establish outbound calls and inbound calls can't get through.
Obviously same for SMS.
- currently there does not appear to be any relationship to suspend

Questions about the cpu to glamo bus and the framebuffer

2010-06-07 Thread Rashid Kratou
Hi guys,

2 questions.

First: How wide is the bus from the cpu to the glamo gpu? It should be
clocked with 90 MHz but I read it has only 7,3 MB/s. How is that
possible?

Second: Can I draw directly to the framebuffer. Is it possible in qtmoko
or in any other distro? I would to write a see programm that just draw
directly into it. I would like to draw in first frame just every even
line. And in the second frame only every odd line tosave bandwidth on
the bus.

I don't know if this the right mailing list to ask for it. But maybe you
can help me :).

 yes, no problem.

 All three reworks are done in very different areas of the device

 IANAL but it is'nt used on the FR.

The patent refers to the adapter not the device,

 See yesterday irc openmoko-cdevel log for the opinion of Joerg (It starts
  near the begining at 18:28

 http://logs.nslu2-linux.org/livelogs/openmoko-cdevel/openmoko-

Compare this comment from that log and the application's Claim 3:

Jun 06 18:29:36 DocScrutinizer my y-cable doesn't need a conversion
circuit and can inform the portable device that whether a power source is
available and inform the portable device of connection status of the adapter
through the data bus
Jun 06 18:30:49 DocScrutinizer except if you define ID as a databus, and a
resistor as a conversion circuit

3. The detachable adapter according to claim 2, wherein the host data bus is a
universal serial bus (USB), and the connection status signal of the set of
host bus signals is an ID signal of the USB.

I'm no patent lawyer, but I think that's exactly what they're claiming. Other
claims narrow it down to using a voltage on the id pin, or a resistance value,
and making these switchable depending on what's plugged in. It only seems
overly complicated because it's expressed in legalese rather than engineering
terms.

As Joerg says, I don't think it should be worthy of a patent. Unfortunately
courts in the US have been progressively lowering the obviousness bar to the
point where it's patentable unless someone has explicitly described it already
before the priority date. It's not just software patents that are broken that
side of the pond.

[wikireader] Project Gutenberg (again)

2010-06-07 Thread Tom Bachmann
Dear all,

after taking a rather longish break, I'm back working on my project
gutenberg integration code. This message consists of three parts: in the
first part, I quickly describe what it is all about. The second part
contains a number of technical questions, and the third part talks about
bugs in wiki-app.

All code is available at gitorious:
git://gitorious.org/wikireader-ness/wikireader-ness2.git

What this is all about:

My idea is that akin to wikipedia, project gutenberg provides a large
collection of free data that may be nice carrying in your pocket. So I
have been working on extending the offline-render to also process ebooks
in EPUB format.
To quickly see what this is about, try

make DESTDIR=image WORKDIR=work WIKI_FILE_PREFIX=wiki  WIKI_LANGUAGE=en
WIKI_DIR_SUFFIX=guten  EBOOK_FILES=ebook-samples VERBOSE=yes cleandirs
createdirs birc

There is some more functionality on which I can elaborate if anyone is
interested, but this is basically it.
You have to harvest the ebooks yourself, but I can provide scripts for
project gutenberg, and also for project gutenberg-de.

Technical Questions:

1) Is there a deep reason why boldface fonts are not implemented? I
figure they are not really relevant for wikis, but would be nice for
some of the books. Unless there is something that complicates the matter
I'm not seeing, I think I will add them (should be straightforward to
mimic the behaviour of italic fonts?).

2) Could you please add the characters U+2039 and U+203A ('SINGLE
LEFT-POINTING ANGLE QUOTATION MARK' and right-pointing version) to the
font? They are used quite often in some books and the box just looks
ugly. Again I would do this myself but there seem to be a number of
intermediate stages in font generation that I don't really understand.

3) Is it possible that the english language image on
dev.thewikireader.org is corrupted? When I try to extract it with 7z x
enpedia.7z I get a cryptic Error: E_FAIL message. (I'm running
standard 7z of debian testing, version 9.04 beta.)

Bugs in wiki-app:

I believe that in the course of writing and testing my extensions, I
have fixed some minor bugs in the core wiki-app code. My changes are
very small and isolated, so the maintainers of the main repository may
wish to look at these files only.

Thanks,
Tom

I think it's the battery. I tried it with the battery from my FR, and then
the Neo 1973 works (without SIM card).
Here is the output with the FR battery:
neo:~# cat /sys/class/power_supply/battery/uevent

POWER_SUPPLY_CURRENT_NOW=-234000
POWER_SUPPLY_CAPACITY=92
POWER_SUPPLY_CHARGE_FULL=85
POWER_SUPPLY_CHARGE_NOW=739500

With the (broken?) 1973 battery it looks like this:
neo:~# cat /sys/class/power_supply/battery/uevent
PHYSDEVPATH=/class/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/0-0008/gta01_battery
PHYSDEVBUS=platform
PHYSDEVDRIVER=gta01_battery

POWER_SUPPLY_CURRENT_NOW=-287000
POWER_SUPPLY_CAPACITY=100

Also, the battery in the 1973 have a bulge to it now. :-)

The easiest option would be to solder a ~12k resistor between ID pin
and the ground right to the backside of the battery connector,
imho. That way you'll make all nokia batteries compatible with gta01's
charger.

I tried modifying a battery but it was too hard for me and it doesn't
work at all now.

Re: [wikireader] Project Gutenberg (again)

2010-06-07 Thread Sean Moss-Pultz
Hi Tom

On Mon, Jun 7, 2010 at 10:43 AM, Tom Bachmann e_mc...@web.de wrote:

 Dear all,

 after taking a rather longish break, I'm back working on my project
 gutenberg integration code.

Excellent!

They are implemented. We just didn't include them to save space. (Font
sets are super huge when you include all the unicode characters!)

If you look at the function handle_data within
http://github.com/wikireader/wikireader/blob/master/host-tools/offline-renderer/ArticleRenderer.py
you'll see what I mean.

Sure we can do this. No problem! The font is getting more and more
complex since we actually hand make many of the characters now.

 3) Is it possible that the english language image on
 dev.thewikireader.org is corrupted? When I try to extract it with 7z x
 enpedia.7z I get a cryptic Error: E_FAIL message. (I'm running
 standard 7z of debian testing, version 9.04 beta.)

Very possible. I'm out of town now, but I'll check with the engineers
when I return later this week.

 Bugs in wiki-app:

 I believe that in the course of writing and testing my extensions, I
 have fixed some minor bugs in the core wiki-app code. My changes are
 very small and isolated, so the maintainers of the main repository may
 wish to look at these files only.

Great. I'll ask our lead engineer (Chris) to check out your stuff.

Sean

iPhone 4G display for Openmoko?

2010-06-07 Thread Dr. H. Nikolaus Schaller
Hi all,
with the new iPhone it is for the first time better in display
resolution (640x960 on 3''5 = 326 dpi) than the Freerunner (640x480 on
2''8 = 283 dpi) with higher dots per inch.

Does anyone know where to get such a display? Who is making them?

Nikolaus
