Populated IrDA?
I see in the tech specs of the FreeRunner that the CPU has IrDA built in, but I cant find anything listed in the specs that shows it as being used. However I saw a youtube interview the other day that I believe had a passing mention about it being available for use. Could someone please let me know if it is or is not populated / usable?? I really want to be able to use my FreeRunner as my universal remote using LIRC. Thank you. Re: Clarification Rant
Agreed. I feel exactly the same way. I have said it before and I will say it again, the best part of being a "COMMunity" is COMMunication. In the first few months of development there was a great deal of communication, but it seems to have dwindled which makes me nervous to be honest. On 6/8/07, Jonathon Suggs <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Well since this was supposed to be available back in March, there was no immediate need. Now the pressure (for me) is starting to build. So it is more of a question of I've been waiting for ~3 months now and there is still no idea of when it is going to actually become available. Yes, I could go out and buy a cheap phone today. But then the Neo could be out tomorrow and I would have wasted my money. But its not even a money issue for me. Its a lack of communication issue. The original date was March. Sean clearly explained why they had to push back the date, but only said that new devices would be out "soon." Then there was another production run and we all thought that THAT was going to be when they were available...but there were issues and we got bumped back to "soon" again. LCD shortages, bad production runs, whats next? Are they are going to scrap the GTA-01's in favor of ramping up production lines for the GTA-02 (since that will possibly be the mass-market hardware) but at a few months delay? So while I'm complaining, I'm also appreciative of the information that has been passed down to us. However, that doesn't erase the fact that they set a date and missed it only to be followed up with a "soon" response. It would be different if they had just said that it would be available in 2007, but to set an exact date then not come through? Then not even give a follow up date...it just seems a little "off" to me. So I know that I'm sounding really down on Sean and the bunch and that isn't my sentiment. I'm excited about what the platform has the potential to do. But its just deflating to see it "failing" at such an early point in the development cycle...I guess my optimism can only last so long. I guess what I'm getting at is if they can't get something out the door now (when it is arguably the most important time for the platform) then what is the future going to be like? I'm going to have to see some MAJOR progress to get my hopes back up to where they were when I first heard about and started following the project. Time line clarification??
Ok so we have passed the original due date for the phase 1. We have passed the original due date for the phase 1+. And now even more confusing we have a phase 2? without a due date at all. The only due date we have is in Sept which will be phase "something"... So I was curious if there is ANY clarified dates yet?? Or in summary... 1. Will there be a phase 1+ or is that being scrapped for the phase 2 instead? 2. Is sept still a realistic release date? 3. If phase 1+ isnt being scrapped, how long are we looking at in between the 2 devices and will there be a discount for early adopters? I ask these questions to the "powers that be". I have read allot of "speculation" information in the postings, but I have yet to see any thing concrete from the people in charge. Dont get me wrong, I dont mind waiting, but one of the BEST things about being part of an open source community is communication. ___ OpenMoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
Any updates?? now that we have passed the "original" date for the second test production run.
I am still waiting on baited breathe for "news". I know that the original test run that was slated for a couple weeks ago got pushed back, but what about the "second" run that was supposed to happen. How did the run go (if there has been a run yet). More problems? What about the phase 1+ specs?? Basically, any news?? ___ OpenMoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
Re: Durability of the Neo1973?
Agreed. It has been REALLY quite for the last month or so. We still dont have any "verified" working phase 1. We havent heard anything about the production run. We havent heard jack about the phase 1+. Its starting to feel like we are being very left out of the loop. And since its us the "development community" that is going to take this thing to the next level once it is released, it kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth that we are being so left out of the loop. Just my 2 cents. Lets hope you are a crappy gambler. :) Seriously though, It is starting to get a little annoying that we have not heard anything. Is it just my imagination, or has Sean been alot quieter for the last month or so? I am sure the FIC guys are working like mad to get this phone out the door, but, like many of us, I have been waiting for my Moko since January. Re: Wishlist: IR LED (was Freq Range?)
This was actually my second thought. My initial thought was to simply use the sound port to produce an IR signal, but I have also thought about doing it exactly the way you mentioned based on the fact I would have to switch from sound to IR, which would just annoy me. However I wouldnt have any idea where to start on sending a signal through one of the unused IO pins. I have currently started working on a GUI and framework for a rather robust and user friendly universal remote, if anyone would be willing to show me how to send a few bites of data through an unused IO port attached to an IR transmitter, and inform me which IO pin to use, I could very easily have a nice utility to share with you all. The first time I saw the Neo I realized how this 1 piece of hardware could replace so many of the pieces I carry around now. I plan on using it for my phone, pda, MP3 player, media player, remote control, etc etc. Hell I would turn it into my tooth brush if I could. On 3/23/07, Wolfgang S. Rupprecht <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Attila Csipa writes: > an infrared USB dongle would be probably simpler to hack. That is an interesting idea. In any project there seems to be some interesting low-hanging fruit that can be grabbed with little effort and cost. It just occurred to me that there the an IR remote controller might be in that category. The cost of parts for adding an IR led transmitter would be very low if an unused IO pin were still available. One could then run a universal remote applet. The advantage is always having your personal remote in your pocket or around your neck. It would allow folks to have a universal remote in situations where they normally wouldn't have one, such as hotel rooms, at friends houses etc. Bang per buck, it seems like a simple IR system for the NEO would be a lot of fun and perhaps even help to sell the phone to the masses. -wolfgang -- Wolfgang S. Freq Range?
Hi, I had this idea to turn my neo (once I get one) into a universal remote as well. Long story short, I need to know a very crucial piece ahead of time to determine if my method of doing so is even possible. Can the Neo generate 40-50khz tones through the sound out port (head phone jack)? If not, what is the max Freq range it can produce? Thank you. ___ OpenMoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

So, I am a little confussed still. Are you saying the "Refreshed" version of the Neo that will be released in June will have A faster CPU, dedicated Graphics Acceleration, AND Wifi?? Catching touch input
Ok, I have been pouring over the Wiki since it was opened today, and all I can say is THANK YOU, and thats a WHOLE lot of data to go through. Oh and the pictures sure are pretty. Anyhow, I have decided to try some "testing" using SDL on this platform, but obviously the Neo1973 dosnt have any keyboard or mouse input, only touch screen (which I love BTW). So, how does one go about catching touch input to use inside of a program? I assume its handled like a mouse click event, passing the XY data and a clicked flag to a system variable somewhere, but how do I access such data?? I have been looking for a breakdown of internal OpenMoko library functions, but really confused by all the data. To be honest, im not entirely sure where to look for my answer, that is why I figured I would just ask you folks, since you seem so on the ball. Thanx in advance. ___ OpenMoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org https://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
OpenGL on the Neo1973??
Hello all, I have been reading the postings here for a few months, and up till now all my questions have been answered fairly well without having to post anything of my own. I had an idea for a program I wanted to contribute to the community, but had a quick question first. I mostly program in C++ and any graphics programming I have done has always been done with OpenGL. I understand that openmoko is written using GTK+ and I could easily use GTK-- with C++, but I am much more fluent using OpenGL to handle my 2D rendering. Will the openmoko hardware be robust enough to handle 2D rendering using the OpenGL libraries?? Or should I look into learning how to load and display bmps and polygons with GTK?? Oh - BTW, I know the other option is using SDL, but Im not particularly fluent in that either. ___ OpenMoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org https://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
