New Freerunner User - Stick with GTK & Any voicemail apps or monitors?

2008-07-22 Thread Alex Fitzpatrick
I'm not going to have much time for playing with the toolchain for a
while, so for now I'm trying to use my freerunner as a replacement for
my existing GSM phone. (A Motorola v551 that's getting long in the tooth)

So far, given that this thing is effectively an open beta, I'm very
impressed (and it certainly pays off in geek chiq at the office). I've
had no problems sending and receiving calls and SMS using my old SIM and
I've been able to update everything over the USB/Ethernet from a machine
running Vista of all things!

No love from the GPS of course, we'll see how that goes over time.

Two questions:
   A) If part of my goal is to be a beta tester should I stick with the
default software stack or switch to one of the other options?
   B) Are there any applications out there for managing or monitoring a
voicemail account?

regards,

opkg update, opkg upgrade still results in the same error

But the forced remove above resolves it for me also, a subseqent update,
upgrade gives no errors.

It needs to go somewhere, anyone upgrading actory-installed 2007.2 image
without re-flashing will hit this error message until the forced remove
is done.

Gmail... Old school is to mail it to yourself... new school is to use a
program that mails it to yourself:

http://richard.jones.name/google-hacks/gmail-filesystem/gmail-filesystem.html

"Gmail Filesystem provides a mountable Linux filesystem which uses your
Gmail account as its storage medium. Gmail Filesystem is a Python
application and uses the FUSE userland
filesystem infrastructure to help provide the filesystem, and libgmail
 to communicate with Gmail."

"GmailFS supports most file operations such as read, write, open, close,

Since I replied to this thread earlier I thought I'd continue! :-)

I installed to the SD card to avoid blowing away my working 2007 config.

So far this version is working great, with one exception; DNS does not
work out of the box, had to add the open dns hack to
/etc/network/interfaces...

- GSM connected out of the box on the first boot with no changes
- Wireless connected to my open access point on the first try (but no DNS)
- Able to send a receive phone calls.

I've now added the DNS hack and I'm working on updating, installing
importing contacts and we'll see how it goes.

To everyone reading this at openmoko.com, this is a huge improvement!
Next time listen to your QA about what a "release" means.. :-)

This image works fairly well, issues I have so far:

1) DNS does not work out of the box, I had to add the open dns hack to
/etc/network/interfaces

up echo nameserver 208.67.222.222 > /etc/resolv.conf
up echo nameserver 208.67.220.220 >> /etc/resolv.conf

Isn't there a way to populate the resolv.conf from the dhcp info?
And if so why is it not enabled by default?

2) illume-config addes the qwerty "button" but I have not yet found a
way to get a full keyboard

https://docs.openmoko.org/trac/ticket/1863

Is there one?

3) WIFI works for the first time only?

Toggling keyboard layouts in 2008.8 update

2008-08-27 Thread Alex Fitzpatrick
I feel like an idiot... oh well...

I was poking around looking for information on modifying keyboard
layouts and bumpted into this:

http://doc.trolltech.com/qtopia4.3/inputmethods-description.html

Which suggested to me that I had not tried all the possibilities with
the qtopia keyboard that I have grown to loath so quickly.

What I did discover was I an switch between "pages" of layouts by
stroking quickly up or down... like the "backspace" gesture only
vertically... and hey-presto... I have more characters... except enter?

I tried that out a few weeks ago when 2008.8 first crash landed ... very
nice! But it randomly failed and was replaced with the qtopia one. (As
discussed in list and in Trac)

We really need to find a way to allow users to really choose ... there
are some places where the predictive text works nicely... like SMS ...
but there are lots of places where that full qwerty keyboard is more
effective... like typing URLs. Having to choose one over the other by
hacking configurations is bloody silly.

As users we want the sun the moon and the stars and we want them
yesterday... with extra cheese! (And blackjack... and hookers!)

The answer there is to run top while using the phone... you'll see that
it's running at pretty much at the limits of the 128MB built in.

Adding a swap file, while inefficient, will allow the kernel to swap
unused pages to "disk" and allow more things to run, or at least lurch...

128MB is damned small these days... but then my first Linux box had 16MB
of RAM, a 33Mhz CPU, a 100MB hard drive and a VGA card that could barely
handle 800x600x 256 colors.
