I'm not entirely sure how customs works, but we are not purchasing
products from the US nor are we selling. We are receiving a free service
and we just pay for shipping to and from ("ship to" by going to a postal
office and "ship back" by ordering and paying on their site).

Hopefully they won't charge me anything. And I don't remember if they
use UPS service, but the UPS service is known to charge extreme amounts
on duties since they have their "private brokerage services", which
could potentially cost more than the Freerunner itself. =/ Here's to hoping!

I actually like the perspective of #1 very much and you should keep it
as such. As I am to understand, the core philosophy of Openmoko is the
"Free the Phone". There are many platform hardware devices out there
that are open. Stressing that it is the _phone_ makes the biggest
difference. It causes a revolution where major phone manufacturers like
LG, Samsung, Nokia, etc. will start trembling to figure out their next
moves as the community thrives to make something so much better with
mass collaboration.

Free the phone; we already have multi-purpose platform devices that run
linux.

If you're talking about the GPS Antenna jack on the side of the phone,
it's unnecessary unless you are in a building or car with very bad signal.

If the dealer is listed on the Wiki, then I don't see why they shouldn't
be trusted.

Re: [FDOM] dfu-error -71

2008-09-27 Thread Boris Wong
I have had bad experience with the dfu_util before. It appeared almost
the same as your problem. It would download part way and show up as an
error.

I originally had a USB extension cable to the back of my computer. Bad
idea. I ended up using the (fairly short) cable that came out of the box
and it worked perfectly. My connections are sometimes loose though.
Maybe this will help.

[om2008.9/FDOM] Charging or Long Power On = Crashing?

2008-10-13 Thread Boris Wong
I'm working on a theory of prolonged charging leading to the crashing of
the Freerunner in FDOM/om2008.9. I'm not saying it's definite, but I
have had some experiences of my phone ending up in kernel panic and
where the screen would not turn on after overnight charging without
suspension.

Here is the scenario:
I plug in my Freerunner to the wall adaptor, to let it charge overnight.
I do not use suspension, but I do have the screen turn off
automatically. I sometimes don't unplug/plug it in again to make the
charging indicator (red light and the charging symbol on the screen)
appear. In the morning (6+ hours later), the phone will be in kernel
panic or the device will be on without the screen (calls and things get
through, monitor does not come on).

The questionable theory:
Is there any chance that, since the kernel is not aware that the device
is charging (even though the device still charges to full), will create
crashes or reverse the loop of the battery indicators? I'm aware that
this is a smart battery which can dish out statistics. If the FR does
not know that it is charging, but the power is going up, I might think
that that may cause problems with the logging and power handling from
the kernel.

Just a theory, but I really want to get rid of kernel panics and crashes
after not shutting down for a long time.

Any other theories floating out there that we might want to consider?

There has been a lot of talk about a working phone, and I agree
(mostly). When I bought the FR I used it to replace my old phone
(non-PDA style regular flip phone). Other than just telephony services,
I found the Calendar/Alarm service very important. Currently accessing
the clock and accessing the alarm is difficult, not to mention there is
only one alarm time slot per day. I couldn't say much about the
stability, I have two other alarm clocks next to it to wake up, although
neither of those are stable either (I use a Cowon A3 player... DO NOT
use it to wake you up.. it won't go off half the time). Apart from this
digression, I would just like to say that a regular phone is expected to
have extensible utilities such as stable SMS, calendars, contacts, and
alarm clocks.
In my opinion, it's not just a phone. It's a day-planner.

I had this problem too, did so many things to the display variable but
didn't work. This did though, runing the command in the same ssh call:

ssh -l root -X -v 192.168.5.202 midori

Try www.dealextreme.com

They have free shipping (although order and shipping takes 3 weeks
total) and their prices are phenomenally low.
