Re: Request for assistance: Need a wiki page for buying and selling GTA01

2008-02-19 Thread Christopher Earl
My GTA01 will be for sale soon, I know there is no official date for the GTA02
but if i can get an unofficial answer from an official source on if it looks
good or bad for march, same for April. This will dictate when my Neo gets
listed

Michael Shiloh [EMAIL PROTECTED] 02/19/08 6:42 PM
Yes, that too. I agree that this would be a completely appropriate item
to post to the community list. I'm suggesting the wiki page in addition,
and I think having your eBay listing listed on the wiki suggests that
you are a member of the community, and not some random outsider
(although hard to imagine any of them having a Neo :-)

Ortwin Regel wrote:
Wiki pages are nice but they are not really a good way to push info to

annoyed by it? I'm not really sure but it would probably be the most
effective way to find a buyer for your phone.

I think it makes perfect sense to use eBay.

However, I propose we use our wiki page to point at such eBay listings,
in case anyone has difficulty finding them on eBay.

So, I propose we re-purpose our wiki page to indicate eBay listings,
perhaps sorted simply into BUYING and SELLING.

 Sound like a plan?

I thank you all for your input.

Having completely sold out of GTA01, we are still getting a large number
 of requests for them.

On the other hand, many of you intend to purchase a GTA02 and perhaps
feel you have no use for your GTA01.

Some of you might have other reasons to sell your GTA01.

I'd like a wiki page to allow these buyers and sellers to find each other.

We have a wiki page for GTA01 owners who lived in 850 MHz-only areas to
sell their units; perhaps this page can be repurposed for this broader
 issue.

Perhaps we call this the OpenMoko flea market.

 Anyone?

 hcitool scan

to discover the keyboard and get its BT address; then

 hidd --connect BTADDR

at which point pairing begins. You make up a PIN, type it on the

a little clumsy, I wish BlueZ would auto-pair in the case that the PIN

Re: PS3 Logitech Wireless Keyboard and Moko

Michael,
I added to the list on the bluetooth Wiki,I really dig this KB
because the maouse pad works, The only thing is Either ALT+CTL+F1-F9 does not
call the kernel to spawn a new terminal or the F keys have no effect in OM.
This would be usefull because I cant figure out how to kill the new Alpha-num
keyboard thing, and the CTL+ALT+Backspace does kill the Xserver but all the
processes are piped there and is really annoying . Any help would be great,
just being able to remove the KB app would be great(Not matchbox-keybaord).
More to come, I *Think* i can use the Neo w/ a ps3 , but ill find out.

This is valuable information. I'm pretty sure a wiki page exists for

This is particularly interesting to me because I need such a keyboard.

Ian,
There is a good possibility that your neo is in deep discharge. Plug it
into the USB port and let it charge a couple hours, then try and boot it, dont
press the power before at least an hour, if you have pressed the power button,
remove the battery for 5 seconds and replace it, charge at least an hour before
booting up. If this is not the problem I do not know.

I have the problem that sometimes I can not power on my neo1973.
I use the usb to charge it, but it seems no response that I could not

Even after usb-charging about 20 mins, sometimes I still can not power on it.

Is it broken? what problem does my openmoko have?

It sounds like Michael was talking about GSM in general. The area not
covered by that indeed does seem negligible in the US. You have got a
different issue. From what I picked up, it is not reasonably possible
to change the hardware in a GTA01 to support the 850 Mhz band. The
best option you have is probably to sell your GTA01 and get a GTA02
that supports 850 Mhz when they become available.

A 0.8x1.6 cell delivers 0.3 amps @0.55 VDC if you do the math, ~10 would be
needed for the right voltage. Obviously some control is needed. IF this was
made the remaining voltage could be used to power the device while not
consuming much power from the battery. This could add a significant amount of
life to the battery, IF this was manufactured I would buy one. It could be user
installable by shimming the battery(SpeedEvil's idea)

* Efficient, 0.8x1.6 (2.4cm) cell

Could you operate the phone without a battery (and without USB) power

Its really that simple, is it not?

No, it's not. Simply releasing information publicly establishes prior
art that prevents patenting by others (well, valid patents). The idea
here is to set up an ability to defend against other companies with
valid patents that are inadvertently infringed: whoops, didn't
realize, sorry. Say, if you want royalties from us, let's have a chat
about our patent X which you're infringing while we're at it...

Patenting ideas and joining the Patent Commons seems like a really
good way of establishing that you're simply trying to protect yourself

Re: proprietary firmware

2008-02-08 Thread Christopher Earl
I think he had the right intentions about this idea, however it would require
vast CPU resources or a coprocessor dedicated to firware/driver layer
managment. This is unlikley to happen, However trying to unlock the virtual
lips of companies would be a huge step forward. Not to play devils advocate but
if the firmware was loaded into RAM at boot a simple RAM dump would allow
reverse engineering of the data, and thus the device,So im OK with that.

While I see the benefits here, it seems that we're sacrificing CPU

I have to agree here. This is a low powered (CPU) device that contains chips
designed to perform specific tasks. Why on earth would anyone think that
making the cpu handle those tasks be a good idea?

Apple can manage to allow their users to update the baseband on the iPhone so
why can't FIC on the neo?

Seriously, I want a phone that works properly more than I want one that dies
during a call because the cpu is maxed out doing stuff that the chips in the

Rome wasn't built in a day and you're not going to change manufacturers

As a first step, get anything you think is patent worthy documented and
dated. In the US, a common practice is to write up your concept and mail it
to yourself in a sealed envelope. You don't open the envelope until you
need to and you do it with a lawyer present. The postmark on the envelope
holds up very strongly to prove the date of the material.

Today I noticed a change that OM has released their CAD files for the case of
the GTA01, This opens a major door to Case modding. I guess im used to closed
hardware and tight-liped companies, but i was supprised. I will never again own

GTA01 Case specs

2008-02-06 Thread Christopher Earl
I agree that the GTA02 case specs would/will be nice, without wifi the GTA01 is
less usefull but some of the implications are usefull; building a BT gamepad/KB
into the case turning the device into a ROM player is a good suggestion, as
stated on the wiki. I will be looking into the cost of having a few different
designs made.

It has already been discussed with Mickael on this list.

The new part of this, is the communication around. According to Michael, gta02
case is not yet published, therefore I guess there is some differences, but the
question is : what is the usefulness with this publication if there is
difference between gta01 case and gta02 case ? I mean, the wanted case for
someone who want to make alternatives cases would be the gta02 one.

Anyway, this publication, which in and of itslef is a great news for consumers,
is a good way for openmoko.com, showing again to the whole market an
alternative way of business.

I will come up with a collection of regional tgz-files and a script for
downloading.

For now you can simply zoom and drag the map around, tangogps will store
all map tiles for offline use.

Be default it saves maps to /tmp but you can change that in the config.
I use /media/card/maps/osm. Note: don't add a trailing slash on the
path, there is a bug which makes tangogps crash on that.

GTA02 Wiki update/ GTA02 ordering thought

2008-02-05 Thread Christopher Earl
I found this update on the GTA02 wiki and thought I would share it.

GTA02v5 design finalized - DONE
GTA02v5 small number produced for OpenMoko internal developer evaluation - Done
(around 20)
GTA02v5 thorough evaluation by OpenMoko internal developers - In progress

Also, I think it would be prudent to put an Unofficial ordering page, to get
a good idea of who within the community will be buying GTA02, maybe we can give
FIC/OM a good idea of how many units will be needed. I,for one, will be buying a
GTA02.

Bzzt, there is, though it is unpowered (and therefore nonstandard

might be rare).

I found the toolchain to be very easy to use. Unzip the .bz2 file,
run 'source /usr/local/openmoko/arm/setup-env' and you are set.

I keep my neo connected during development and ssh -X to it. That
way, I can scp the built binary over and run the program on my desktop
monitor but use the neo device processor and environment.

If you are writing appd that should work on your gnome desktop (i.e.
no gps or gsm), you can ./configure the Makefile for your local
desktop during developme, then om-conf when you sre ready to test on
the device.

I'm in a very similar situation as described below.
Although I think the situation just got a lot more complicated with Nokia's

Not to mention over here in Australia the iPhone still has yet to be

I'm very curious about the openmoko development (hence my
reading/subscribing to this list), and am biding my time before I get a new

Guilty as charged. As I have mentioned before, the iPhone is a Golden
Form Factor device. I think of it more as a Quarter Tablet Personal
Computer than as a phone these days.

Then why do I stay subscribed to the OpenMoko list you ask?

 I dream.

I dream of the day that some company will realise that I (and about 6
billion other guys) are willing to pay many hundreds of dollars for a
 device
 that:

...duplicates the iPhone's form factor, screen resolution, control layout
and other basic features and functionality.
...duplicates or betters the iPhone's battery performance.
...has an integrated non-slip silicone jacketed case.
...has and integrated GPS receiver, or comes with a Bluetooth remote one.
...supports an IR or Bluetooth portable keyboard.
...has an integrated Picture Frame type angle stand that will let you
 sit
the device on a flat surface in portrait or landscape mode securely.
 ...runs open software like OpenMoko.

Sorry, but FreeRunner does not come close to hitting this mark.

Hopefully, FIC has secretly squirreled dozens of engineers away in bomb
proof caverns deep inside the mighty Swiss alps who are feverishly slaving
away on thier iPhone killer at this very moment and are mere minutes away
from stunning the whole world with their amazing achievement.

 Or maybe not.

So I continue to dream my dreamy little dreams.

My only concern is i am not aware of qt lib port to OM yet, If you know of one
please let me know i would be interested for sure.

Michael Schmidt [EMAIL PROTECTED] 01/30/08 12:21 PM
yes, but it is not about serverless or any instant messenger, it is the only
way, to have **secure** VOIPs.
as well users do not need a telephone call, they can to the calls with VOIP
over a data internet flat rate from the mobile phone.
Voip is not in yet, and then it would be in with QT gui, no one wants to
make a GTK gui as this is a lot of work, though for the small display a gui
change is anyway needed, so maybe a Gtk would not be much work.
Anyway, it is work and the project has no resources for OM. So other IMs and
solutions will come, but they are not as safe as an asym, encrypted PGP
line.
So you need to ask for the goals, you want just IM or Just VOIP? then choose
anything.. if you want secure VOIP, then go the way for an adjusted gui for
the PGP-Messenger with soon Voip... and as it is not in, but the launch of
OM is soon, ... if someone gets the flu, then use Qt still, as this might be
quicker done... and Voip can be added later as an update...

(http://www.grandcentral.com/) and is based on open standards (and
  closed
   source).
It also looks like Gizmo directly supports the Maemo on the Nokia N800
   (http://gizmoproject.com/learnmore-nokia800.html).

Other options are http://ekiga.org/ and http://www.openwengo.org/. They
both do SIP. I know about Ekiga because it ships with Ubuntu, and it's
completely open source. I don't know that much about OpenWengo.

This is a usual question. Although you could configure the USB port in
host mode. It would be unpowered.

I haven't heard anything about it for a while, but IIRC freerunner is
supposed to have a powered USB port

You could be right. But i did not find any proof on the wiki.
But to be honest, i thought i heard that too some time...

Re: GTA01 Modified Handset

2008-01-30 Thread Christopher Earl
Upgrading the Memory is not a problem, just pop in a bigger microSD upgrading
the NAND would be totaly different and not serve much of a purpose, you can use
the ipkg that lets you install apps directly on the SD and link the libs and
stuff, there is a wiki that will help you do this. about the provider, i guess
it depends on what features you want, however, there are not many GSM providers
in the states, in my area I only have T-mobile and ATT

Lally Singh [EMAIL PROTECTED] 01/30/08 10:12 PM
Any recommendations on sim vendors in the states for use with these
phones? I'd like something that'd auto-bill me like a regular phone
plan, without getting ripped off on rates/data/etc.

Well, more ripped off than I am right now. A man's gotta have standards.

On a completely different random topic, any ideas how hard it'd be to
upgrade the memory on these things? Say a gig?

That's great. I really hope those handsets are available at the same time

Re: GTA01 Modified Handset

2008-01-30 Thread Christopher Earl
The 64MB of NAND flash aka 'on board Flash 'is just for the Kernel and Root
File system, although the Root FS could be loaded onto the MicroSD card; which
is located under the SIM slot, i believe that up to 4GIG is available on
MicroSD. The GTA01 ships with a 512MB card. so all in all you get 64MB + 512MB
, at this time i assure you that 512MB is plenty for OpenMoko and Applications,
if you wanted to utilize the device as a MP3 player I would suggest purchasing
the biggest MicroSD card you can find. The 128MB of SDRAM is system memory,
like your PC has.It is not used for 'Storage'. OM has done a great deal of
work to keep their applications small, and they have done a good job at it.

Lally Singh [EMAIL PROTECTED] 01/30/08 11:36 PM
Oh, the 128 is onboard storage. What *is* the onboard CPU RAM on this
thing? Is it just what's built onboard the CPU?

Whoops, I meant RAM (128 mb on the current unit).

Yeah, I was afraid it was just the two. At least t-mob's been good to
 me in the past.
