RE: Potential buyer
Depends on how you define open and phone. Openmoko, depending on the distro you install and how much you play with it varies from basically usable phone to extremely fun/frustrating hardware that might make occasional calls or texts. I've used it as both over the years I've used mine. For a phone that 'just works' and meets some level of open, there are various Android platforms and ports. HTC recently announced they are unlocking the boot loader for all future HTC 'Droids. How 'open' you consider these is a point of opinion, however for the most part they make great smartphones. I'm now running an HTC 'Droid Incredible as my regular phone and it does most everything I want from a smartphone. But then I don't actually hack much anymore. Also, as mentioned, there IS some work on a next-gen Openmoko-based device. Not much good without the Openmoko chassis, display etc, but it'll be the next ubergeek hacking device for this community. OpenMobile.nl Image?
How out of date is the OpenMobile.nl image listed here? http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/QtMoko#OpenMobile.nl_Download Is it possible to apt-get update from this image? As I no longer have any Linux boxes, except my FreeRunner, this is the least painful way to try qtmoko, but I would prefer a more up-to-date version. Any change of OpenMobile.nl updating it's image? ATM, I'm still running H:1, but it's getting rather out-of-date and I've moved to a Droid Incredible for my daily phone as my daughter got a free upgrade on her unlimited service plan. [Hackable:1] serial terminal program
I've been wanting to try using my freerunner as a serial terminal to debug servers via serial. I've got a USB->serial adapter that H:1 recognizes and assigns to /dev/ttyUSB0. My problem is, minicom won't run because the shell screen is to small. Mickeyterm fails to find a bunch of python modules and things via dbus. I've even tried cu -l /dev/ttyUSB0 but it says the line is busy. Anyone know of a serial terminal program that does work on H:1? RE: [gta02-core] Openmoko Beagle Hybrid
Anyway, can you please keep focus on the original question (everything else does not bring us forward): Which option would you prefer? 1. PCB and very special components only (you can go shopping yourself). 2. PCB and complete component set (unsoldered) 3. PCB and components already soldered on a professional SMT line (we can use one) 4. same as 3 including a Wi2Wi GPS receiver module So, If I get the Populated PCB and LCD module for 169 Euros, does that mean I don't have to break a Freerunner?
