Personally I'd like a fully reflective on-board IDE/squeak-like environment
(where there is no separation from applications and programming tools) based
on the io language (www.iolanguage.com) using a totally new toolkit built
for the purpose but I realise that I'm a pervert... :D

On that subject it seems that someone is nearly as perverted as me and is
working on a squeak environment for the neo:

Plea to developers: Make data for all applications available to scripting languages

2007-09-15 Thread J F
Hi there,
I have been a long time palm treo user and my treo is my invaluable pocket
office for my business. I have used scripting languages on my desktop to do
all sorts of useful manipulation of the data on my treo to help prepare
accounts, publish information on the web etc... I have to make sure that I
use programs that offer a way to get the info out of them on my desktop.
There are a few scripting languages that are available on the treo that can
use the data of selected programs depending on what the developer who ported
the scripting language felt important. This amounts to me not being able to
find solutions to do what I want to do directly on my phone...

What I would like to see is ALL programs having a way of getting at their
data from a scripting language. I don't know if it makes sense to have some
guidelines for developers to make it easier for this information to be got
at. This would be for someone more competent than me to suggest.

I imagine it would be easier if there was a decision on a default scripting
language but with so many to choose from I don't quite see that happening...
(my vote goes with python even though it's by no means my favourite language
but considering the amount of libraries, simplicity, documentation, user
base, strong position in the open source community and the success of python
on Nokia series 60 phones it would be a good idea.)

As a little postscript I would also like to make a plea for making any
scripting bindings as simple and easy to use as possible. I feel that things
like being able to run your own scripts on a phone is what will make it
possible for ordinary non-1337 folk to appreciate what freedom means.

Thanks for listening,
James

Fwd: Widgets: Openmoko/Chumby transproject?

As we can see, the neo and the chumby have a lot in common, be it
ideas, hardware specs or even leaders ;)

Yes, it uses flash7 for widgets. Which has'nt even been considered in
the openmoko case... But what if the two projects shared the widget
aspect?

If you're about Macromedia Flash (er, now Adobe), isn't it closed
source?

There's gnash - www.gnashdev.org

I'm stated my point of view.Personally, I will never buy open phone
where UI toolkit is heavily based on closed source thing and requiring
me to buy proprietary Adobe app to create\change UI parts. That's hardly
in open source spirit.

I do believe there are open source apps to create flash files, however, I'm
no expert on the subject and am too lazy to hunt for links right now :p
maybe someone who's had experience on this side of things could say
something on their quality.

Also, flash based UIs I seen while looking good
are quite slow and jerky even on powerful (and power consuming) desktop
machines so they're hardly usable.Of course this is my own private
opinition and it is safe to ignore it.

There are some youtube vids of the prototype chumby in action where it
doesn't look too sluggish - it has similar specs to the p1 fic1973, however
it is running an adobe closed source flash player that may be faster than
gnash.

I personally like the idea of having a ui that is designable by people who
work on websites who have more design skills than the average c haxxor...
Combined with an onboard webserver, one could do some fun things like
transplant the phone's ui to whatever full computer you have handy.

It would be fun to run some chumby things on the fic but I would imagine
*JUST* having a flash ui might be limiting for some projects - as a musician
I would dread using a flash metronome, it would never have the timing of
gtick.
