Anyone look at Always Innovating Super-Jumbo as basis for Android under SHR?

2012-10-25 Thread Jason Kridner
I've seen there has been some discussion on using Android on
Freerunner or Replicant on GTA04 phones [1]. There has even been some
success at running Android under QtMoko or SHR using chroot, but it
seems no one has looked at integrating it within the SHR build system.
I'm wondering if I'm wrong, because I think that the Always Innovating
Super-Jumbo release for BeagleBoard-xM [2] would make a good enough
example that could be reverse engineered and included within the SHR
builds. I'd really like to have my primary interface be SHR, but I
still want to be able to run Android applications.

I continue to evaluate putting an actual build of Android under
meta-android, but I think someone else would know much better how to
do this and it is pretty far down my priority list. Anyway, I'm
putting it out there that I'm looking into the challenge.

FreeRunner A6 Sale

2009-06-16 Thread Jason Self
I've been holding off on buying a FreeRunner until until it seemed
sufficiently problem-free to me.

$250 is a very appealing price. I just wanted to confirm my
understanding that the only difference between A6 and A7 is that a)
the buzz fix is applied and b) it has a newer GSM firmware (which I
can flash myself anyway, so not a big deal.)

If my understanding is correct, then it sounds like a great deal,
especially if I'm able to ship it to SDG Systems for them to apply fhe
fix for me.

I've owned my freerunner since july and have tinkered with it a lot trying

guess I know enough to get me in trouble, but I also know enough to undo
what I did to get out of trouble also. What I am asking is for someone to
be willing to help me understand what I'm doing so that I can become
helpful instead of dangerous. In the end, I would like to produce a better
how-to less technical than what is available now to help others get started
who are lost in technical data and instructions.

Re: LED notification

2008-10-11 Thread Jason Cawood
this is exactly what I was trying to get at. I just couldn't find the
correct words to communicate this effectively.

My reason is because if I suspend my phone then I walk away and return
to it, I have no visible notification I missed an event unless I touch
the screen and see if my phone is still suspended. If I'm not
constantly touching the screen to make sure it's still suspended and I
did miss an event. Then my power consumption just increased and my
battery life is quickly diminishing.

Re: Om2008.8 comments and questions

2008-08-12 Thread Jason Hooper
i think "basic stuff" is subjective.

for example, i just need :

1. send / receive phone calls
2. send / receive text messaging
3. battery life

but obviously this wont be the same for everyone.

1. i think almost everyone can agree on. so the sim card debacle was
an interesting hurdle early.

2. doesnt work in 2008.8 reliably while in sleep. does this weird
thing where the phone wakes up. no sound. and no message in the inbox.
but it definitely senses something. eventually it does show up at some
random point in the future, but i just have to know that theres a
message in there.

3. is absolutely terrible. thought it would last at least a night in
suspend. but it doesnt. so it wont ever even get to the alarm cause
the phone is dead. the persistent lightning bolt is obviously a
problem, but thatll get fixed eventually

i agree with you on contacts to a degree, but i only need name =>
number really. you sound like you have a lot of business contacts with
emails and fax and postals.

It is not necessary to modify a cable to fast charge the device. All
that is needed is something like [1] (which costs US$3) and the
software from [2] and you have fast charging without modifying a cable
or relying upon the folks from OpenMoko to get into the accessory
business.

The only thing that the the custom charger does is include a resistor
that provides GTA0x a way to recognize the charger so that it
automatically draws the full amount and [2] isn't needed.

Opening the accessory business is A Good Thing. Including a charger is
not necessary.

Openness is good. After checking out the wiki[1], it seem that fast
charging can be performed without the need for a custom charger, so I
personally am fine with leaving it out. My powered USB hub can supply
the needed 500mA to fast charge while at home, and an AC adapter to do
the same when away from home can be purchased online cheaply.

As mentioned before we're looking into offering an 850MHz variant of the
triband GTA02.

Since the GSM section is essentially the same between GTA01 and GTA02,
we thought a good experiment would be to modify a couple GTA01 handsets
for 850MHz and to test them out here in the USA. I just received these
handsets on Friday and am now trying to figure out how to thoroughly
test them. Rather than me traveling around the country, it might make
sense to ship them to various users to test them with different
carriers. Please write to me if you are in an 850MHz area and are
interested in participating.

Wifi driver:
We're making very good progress, but it's still not finished.

GTA02 hardware:
Still waiting for the Wifi driver to verify the Wifi hardware, but so
far we're feeling quite good about this part. There are a couple of
other things to verify, and as mentioned before we will most likely make
another revision of the board, which will hopefully be the
production-ready revision.

Regards,
Michael

Is there any possibility of a future hardware version becoming quad
band?

Seems to me my phone got a signal in Okla. City and Tulsa, but pretty

If north central Oklahoma is as rural as it sounds, unfortunately your
chances of being able to use the neo are pretty slim. A very high
percentage of rural America uses the 850 band, whether it's tmobile or
at&t/cingular. If the area is more city like, then you might be able to
get away with using tmobile, as they predominantly use the 1900 band. I
know there was a map posted a while back of what parts of the country
use the 850 and what uses the 1900. See if you can find that.

Good luck,

W,
It sounds like the device has lost it's charge. Plug it into the the
charginging cable at let it charge for 4+ hours and give it another try.

Unlike many of the consumer devices you may be familiar with, the Neo1973 will
NOT run from solely the USB cable if the battery has been drained. To make
things more frustrating, the device will only only charge in slow-mode when
the device is in this state, you that is why you must plug it in for many
hours.

Good luck!

Harry,
Have you tried re-seating the card? Perhaps the contacts are not meeting up.

When I inserted mine, I slid the SIM into the metal piece while it was

Good luck.

Mark,
You will find out very soon that the rootfs image you used is badly broken.
"gta01-20070704215706" has a bug that causes gsmd to not respond. The issue
has been corrected in later builds. You can either build it yourself, or I
have made a recent recent build available at

Hi Gerry,

With regard to the current status of things, essentially FIC has NOT charged

I like the idea, but I see one potential problem. AFAIK, the phone is not
capable of using the GSM-Voice and the GPRS Modem at the same time. This
means that you could not make a GPRS connection to your desktop while a call
is coming in (i think).
A work around may be to use bluetooth or wifi to communicate with your
desktop.

Of course, there shouldnt be anything stopping you from doing a missed-call
notification once the incoming call has passed.

No you are not the only one. Other members of the list have fingered Gmail as
the source of the problem. It seems that any mail coming from that domain is
getting duplicated.

Mario,
AFAIK, nobody has received their phone yet.  We have been warned multiple
times that we should not expect much from this first round of devices. That
said, I would be willing to bet that as soon as the phones start shipping,
you will see a bunch of updates.

Not yet. Nobody has received their "Shipment 1" devices. As soon as we get
our hands on them, I am sure you will be hearing more o nthis list and on the
wiki.
However, we have been told several times, that we should not expect much from
the phone at this point. I expect that the software will mature quickly,
however.

Somebody on the IRC channel earlier was saying shipping is slated for the

AFAIK, ship dates have not been confirmed by anyone from FIC/OpenMoko.

Last we heard, the phones were in customs as they were being air-mailed to

Re: adding data services with t.mobile for neo 1973

2007-07-08 Thread Jason Elwell
I have a "traditional" plan with Tmobile. I just added the $5.99 "T-MobileWeb"
to my account in preparation for the arrival of my Neo. It appears that this
$5.99 service should be sufficient (instead the $29.99 "Total Internet" plan)
as long as the Neo can play nice with it's proxy server and "email bridge".

Now I just need my Neo :)

2007-07-08 Thread Jason Elwell
Waiting indeed.

My new launch projections are:

A. The website will be put online at start of business (ie 8am)

B. When Sean said July 9th, he meant July 9th US/Europe time, not Taiwan
time.

C. Launch delayed indefinitely.

My money is on 'C'. Sean tends to go silent as the deadlines slip, and we
have not heard from him in a couple of days...

Vicente,
It is believed that the developer version (due to be released today) will be
available world-wide. The phone is un-locked, un-subsidized, so it is not
linked to any carrier. You should be able to use it with any GSM provider by
simply inserting an active SIM card.

Hope this helps.

There are not many neo1973 owners yet. Only about 36 developers have received

on the basic software. Hopefully in the the very near future, FIC will begin
selling to the rest of the development community so that we can start writing
all sorts of new applications for it. Then, somethime in the distant future,
FIC will open sales up to thegeneral public.

Looking at the open defect list on the bugzilla site

Open defects include:
321 - ftdi_eeprom often fails silently
365: Openmoko dialer fails after gsmd restart
482: Phone Consumes power when turned off; causes battery to drain.
255: "Battery remaining" meter still needs work

Re: T-Mobile finagling advice?

2007-02-10 Thread Jason Elwell
You should not have any problem getting GPRS to work as long as you are using
their regular service. AFAIK, only their PREPAID service has the access to
GPRS restricted.

The screen should definitely turn on and perhaps flash or change
brightness continuously (i.e. pulse).

With regards to accidental clicks, I have a couple of ideas:

* Two taps at opposite corners or opposite edges to unlock.

* A quick left/right/left triple tap or left->right->left drag action in
the middle of the screen.

* Apple's iPhone has a "slide to unlock". A continuous left to right
action over a certain region unlocks the phone.

Since the display isn't pressure sensitive I think any of these options
would probably work. Can we have all of them? :)

Re: Developers phone also fit for early adopters?

2007-01-25 Thread Jason Elwell
I'd also like to know if the hardware is likely to change between March and
September. I *am* a developer, but that doesn't mean I want to buy another
phone is 6-8 months :)

I saw that article too, and thought the same thing.

Surely just a mis-printright?
