The 140x110 look good, but IMHO it would look even better and more
finger-friendly if the icons were square or circular. I think it could be a
good option to extend the icon to 130x130 and leave a zone at the bottom 30
lines to draw the text on top.

Re: [Gta04-owner] [ANN] GTA04 Keyboard prototype

2012-05-11 Thread Lionel Broche
A couple of quick questions about the keyboard prototype:
- is this a flexible PCB? Or could it be printed on a flexible substrate so
that surface can be bent?
- what are the dimensions of the PCB? how thick should the whole keyboard
be with the buttons included?

:) nice, thanks!

ok, I'll make something serious then, see if this attracts the community.
I'llstart another topic once I have the first draft ready.

Re: [Gta04-owner] [ANN] GTA04 Keyboard prototype

2012-05-06 Thread Lionel Broche
Hello,

I have been thinking for a while to try a forearm-mounting casing for the
openmoko. A casing that you would clip on the left (or right) forearm, that
would be thin enough to fit under the sleeves or even covered with a piece
of nice fabric to look like a cloth.
This keyboard would probably fit well on the forearm together with the
screen and it would make the whole thing easier to use. I am also thinking
to place the antenna on the outside of the arm, above a piece of aluminum
foil in order to reflect the radiated power and to protect the user from RF
field.
At the moment I don't have the GTA04, but I can make some rough drawings
from the CAD files (I will need to download them). Would there be other
people interested in this new way of carring your phone? I previously had
some positive comments on the forum about this, so I think we could
probably start a small group if there is enough interest.

About the announcement itself, I think it is always good to show new ideas
at early stages. This makes it possible for the community to orient the
development of the project if they see better/different ways to use it. It
also shows the level of interest.

Re: GTA04_This is my Fantasy

2012-04-21 Thread Lionel Broche
I am not a specialist and I am not sure to understand what you mean by
'boot linux from any desktop', but I have been experimenting remote
connections lately so my results may interest you.

The idea of remote connection is that you boot your device normally (the
client), and access a remote computer (the host) once the operating system
is running on the client. Usually you only need a very light operating
system so the client machine does not need to be powerful.

I have been using a letux 400 (very small device, 2Gb Flash drive, rather
slow) as a client to connect to my home computer. Since a letux is (really)
not powerful, I dropped the idea of using a full remote desktop but this is
likely to be possible on the GTA04 (see Vino, Remmina and others for remote
desktop applications). Instead of that, I opened some X windows directly
via ssh (use the -X option when you connect with ssh, there is a bit of
fidling around with keys and host authoring). This technique allows you to
control the GUI of a host from a light remote client.

In final I could run some large applications (gimp, blender...) on my letux
and to use them just as if I was using my home computer. Only the GUI of
the application selected appeared on the screen.

I am not sure if that is what you want to do. I can give more details if
you need.

Re: How to bring forward the community?

2012-03-03 Thread Lionel Broche
well, I think you just have to look at the capabilities of IMAP5 to see
that the next generations of phone/tablet will have 3D support, both for
display and webcam (I think IMAP5 supports 2 webcam ports). So IMHO the big
manufacturers are now focusing on including 3D instead of designing new
concepts.

About the choice of keyboard, from what I read on this thread I think that
one of the main issue is the feedback. Touch keyboard give you a feedback
via the feeling of the fingertips, so you don't need to focus your
attention to it. Maybe using an audible 'clic' would be an alternative for
touch screen keypads? or using an electric discharge to trigger the user's
nerves :) (though this may lower the battery life...)

Coming back to the original message, is it possible for an averaged-skilled
person to carry out the customisation of the GTA04 board to change the
connector?
Also, would it be feasible to make a GTA04 module that could be connected
to external screens while powered, so that you could switch from tablet to
phone? I just ask out of curiosity, but it would be fun to connect your
phone to a large display in your car for easier sat nav, then take it back
