I think it will be the same as with computers. You have Windows
preinstalled and 90% of the Users will use it. And on computers it's
relative easy to change the operating system.

On a mobile you have much more optimization to the hardware.

The iphone has only his success because the software fits optimal to the
hardware (speed, touchscreen, etc.) - of course android has now done the
same - better user interface, faster, etc.)

I think it will be bad marketing, when we see phone X with ubuntu, when
it's slow, you can't use the hardware buttons, etc ... Perhaps it will
run with optimization, but it think the normal user will not do it.

ubuntu phone needs for me a label on the hardware.

i have not seen such a newsletter so it was a mistake by me. But i have

I know its not so easy and cheap, but you have hard competitors on the
smartphone market. I own a Wikireader so i like the idea :) My father is
very happy about it. His only problem is the display, because it has no
background light (i know the battery).

I don't know if the problems are solved in a new version (i have to look
for a update). My last problems was.

- Table of contents would be very nice
- the overview block from the wikipedia (where population, president,
etc. are listed. For example in a article about a country)
- kinetic scrolling is a bit messy to see where you are on a black/white
display ;)

So last but not least. My question about a official statement. How looks
the future? I hope i can buy the third Openmoko device after Freerunner
and Wikireader :)

Hi Christoph,

when Openmoko Inc. still exists i hope we get a official statement from
them, for the future of Openmoko Products. When i look at the Wikireader
i have not seen any updates since months.

It's not easy to sell original Wikireader for 109 Euro against 79.95
Euro for the Medion Wikireader.

I think Openmoko has not a good price for you ... As in the discussion
in the other thread and in our personal mails (last year) i think the
price is still to high.

I have looked into the code a bit and have a few starting problems.
Perhaps you can write a small howto about generating the files for the
wikireader:

- Which base files use the wikireader for converting => XML Datadump?
- How works the converting process where i have to store the data?
- Is it possible to use only one file for converting?
* so it's possible to generate own content - not a wiki.

For me it would be very helpful so i can concentrate on the parser and
can test it directly.

Perhaps you can describe the process to convert Wikipedia XY into the
wiki.dat format and describe how own content can be integrated. From the
git checkout to a working wikipedia XY.

Wikireader development - Ideas and improvements

2010-10-02 Thread Patrick Beck
Hello,

i own a Wikireader since a month now and i am happy with the base
functionality, but i have a few ideas and improvements and i am looking
for other users they owns a wikireader (and develeops for it).

Openmoko has not stopped the development of the Wikireader, but i think
it can be useful to have a nice community around the project. Till now i
have only found the following ressources:

http://thewikireader.com/
http://dev.thewikireader.com/
http://github.com/wikireader/wikireader

and see not a list or any other communication - i think the community
list is not so wrong :)

==Improvements:==

- http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutschland - There is a small block on
the right with information (population, language, capital, etc.) I think
that a very useful imformation - how can we add them to the Wikireader?

- Table of Contents would be helpful to get a overview about the content
of the whole article

- searching in a article could be very usefull

- The scrolling it a bit poor, because you can't read anything on the
screen when you scroll - on the community list was a small patch
discussed:

http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/community/2009-December/058462.html

That patch works no more, but from the descriptions i find it very
useful. A new version from maleadt was published in September:

http://github.com/maleadt/wikireader/downloads

It's unstable and not as inuitive as the first path but it is a start
for a nice usability on the wikireader.

==Problems:==

- A other problem is that tables and other special layouts are not
interpreted from the parser. See for example:

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_Kfz-Kennzeichen_in_Deutschland

On the Wikireader you get only a list from 0-9 and A-Z without any
license plates.

So how can we fix the problems and get new features in? I am only a
python programmer but i hope i can help. This Thread should be a
starting point to discuss new features and collect bugs - i think that
should help Openmoko, too.

with kind regards

Patrick

Re: Dfu-util

2009-07-25 Thread Patrick Beck
Hi,

what is the problem? Then you have a device where uses this USB-technic
as well in your computer. USB DFU means => Universal Serial Bus Device
Firmware Upgrade. In Openmoko we use dfu-util to implant the server side
on your host and the u-bootloader implants the device side - so we can
flash :)

With the device parameter you can specify the device you will flash:
dfu-util --device 0x1457:0x5119

Execute dfu-util -l before you attach the neo and after you have
connected it to your computer. So you can identify the right device.

A light for the Freerunner

2008-11-28 Thread Patrick Beck
Hello,

because i like my light on my older phone, a Sony Ericsson W800i, i
added a light on the miniusb - connector. Perhaps anybody like it or has
any improvements for me :D

Here you can find a wiki article about the light
http://yourse.de/wiki/doku.php?id=openmoko:usb_light

And here two videos
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iK5w-OHSm9g
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2H4QZq2xxE

It was a proof-of-concept and it works! Perhaps Openmoko likes the idea
and adds a light directly into the case in the next generation of
devices :)

At least manufacutring at one's own risk ;)

Have fun!

Hello Jonathan,

in den "Add Rule" window you can filter according to the "Recipients is"
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Then you can move the email in a other folder.

Perhaps a better solution when the above not always works => Filter on
the Specific Header for "Reply-to" => Reply-to is always
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I hope that works for you.

According to the wiki => they hoped that v3 is bug-free

I think this is a very good idea. It is small and can attached to the
Neo. Here can you find a bigger picture of the stylus =>

How you protect the neo at every day use?

I think the stylus cool, too ;) A light, a pen, etc, all what i want in
one pen ;) I only think that it would be a good idea for people they
have no pen in the trouser pocket :)

I only look now for a good alternative to carry the neo with me, without
a backpack ;)

Thanks for your effort. The pictures are very nice ;)

Perhaps we should look for a smaller stylus for the pouch :)

The apps looks nice on the neo. I look forward to see they running on
the device :D I would buy GTA02 in october. I hope the hardware will
released earlier.

Thanks for the pictures.

The pouch is with the elastic band very nice. Perhaps we can find a good
small alternative to the big stylus in the package. So we have no
troubles to close the pouch ;)

Can you say me which musicplayer is on this picture =>

Perhaps you can take a high-res photo of the neo pouch, because anybody

Hello,

that is right, but only the Kernel and other GPLed Software is free to
use. The TomTom Software is closed. TomTom musst optimize the software
for the use on openmoko and the Neo1973. I hope they support the
Openmoko platform in the future :)

Openstreetmap is till now not a alternative to other proprietary map

navigate;)

Hello,

i have now a answer from the TomTom support. It takes a longer time
because the normal german TomTom Support could not answer my question
and so i musst ask TomTom Pro. In addition i had not many time in the
last months - Sorry.

Now the answer from TomTom:

Dear Mr. Beck,

Currently TomTom has no plans to extend our navigation software to other
platforms. However the Openmoko is an interesting development and we
will keep an eye on it to see how this project evolves into the future.

With kind regards,

The TomTom PRO support team

That is a bad Answer, but i hope TomTom change this information in the
future.

Of course should tomtom a optional software. But the first target is
that tomtom sell it for the openmoko plattform.

I like the OSM-Project. I wish me a cool gui, and a good way to create
maps, log tracks and view maps one the Neo1973. And of course complete
maps ;)

But for car navi and so one, OSM will at the moment the wrong project.

I will contact tomtom later per email and ask my question ;)

tomtom on the Neo1973

2007-03-31 Thread Patrick Beck
Hello,

i follow the deployment of the Neo1973 and Openmoko since they become
public.

I have discussed with a few others on the IRC, about the Idea to use
tomtom on the Neo1973. I think it will be very cool :) I had no problem
to pay money for a good software and rich in detail maps. It is hard
work to create good maps (see http://www.openstreetmap.org).

When many people want to use tomtom on the Neo1973, it would be a good
precondition to assure tomtom from this idea to sell tomtom for the
Openmoko platform. tomtom devices already run under linux, so i think it
will not so hard to port it on Openmoko.

My question is now => How we should ask tomtom? I think it will good
when a company or the intern developer of openmoko can ask. Beside the
company, all interested can ask tomtom. So they can see that we would
run tomtom on openmoko :)

I hope that i'am not the only one who would run tomtom on the
Neo1973 ;)
