Umlauts in Openmoko

2008-08-03 Thread Tobias Kündig
Hello everyone!

I received my Freerunner from Pulster about a week ago! It's a really great
device and absolutely useful! Thanks to everyone who made this possible.

I just have one question: I'm living in Switzerland, so I type my SMS in
(Swiss) German. That's why it would be really useful to use Umlauts (ä, ö,
ü / Ä, Ö, Ü). Unfortunately Umlauts mess up the whole message text. They are
replaced by {, } or even stranger signs. If I send a message with Umlauts
from the freerunner, it is displayed correctly on the Freerunner but messed
up on the receiving device.

I _think_, this has something to do with encoding. Is it possible to patch
something so I can use Umlauts? Is it planned to include support for this
special chars by default?

Thank you very much.

Best regards,
Tobias Kündig

Re: FR at golem.de

2008-08-06 Thread Tobias Kündig
This is the worst review I ever read from Golem.

So many mistakes. They bought their Freerunner and wrote the review. I
bet they haven't tested it for more than 1 day.

The funniest thing: They say the icons are bad. i.e. the «gears»-Tab
is not for Settings, it's for the favorites menu. Never heard from a
task manager, haven't they...

Usable Keyboard

2008-08-09 Thread Tobias Kündig
Hello everyone!

I flashed OM2008.8 yesterday. It's really awesome what great software the
developers created! Thank you all for this!

But there are some small things I don't like on it:
* I. E. there is no real home screen.
* I cannot receive SMS - or lets say «not all SMS».
* I'm still missing configuration tools
* etc.

But all this things aren't too bad and I know that they'll be fixed soon(er or
later).
There is only one thing that makes the Freerunner nearly unusable: The
keyboard.

With this crazy «dictionary-thing» I'm not able to write a message in (Swiss)
German or any other language than English. Even a simple «Hallo» ends up
in «Hello». And as long I'm not able to write a word that is not in the
dictionary it's pretty useless for me. There are also keys missing to make it
usable for the terminal.

I think I am talking for a lot of people who want to have a _nice and usable_
keyboard - for any language and any app.

The keyboard has to be finger friendly and not too small. It should contain
all usual letters and special characters.
I made a little mockup (it's no design masterpiece... ;-)) of a keyboard. I
think something in this direction would be really cool:

http://files.it-media.ch/om_keyboard_mockup.jpg
(Modified Screenshot from the wiki)

The buttons measure 40x40 Pixels. Unfortunately there is not too much space
between them, so I have no idea how it would be to type on it.

Does anyone got an idea how difficult it would be to create a keyboard _like
this_?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Tobias

Re: case manufacturing

2008-12-13 Thread Tobias Kündig
I made a case mockup a little while ago. But I never had time to create a 3D
model.

I came across a few problems while I designed the case:

   - The Freerunner doesn't have any buttons on its front. In addition to
that, the borders left and right from the display are pretty large (around
0.8 cm/0.315 inch). Everytime I looked at my mockup, I thought it's looking
some kind of strange. It's really hard to get a good design if you only have
   a display and nothing more.
   - Another problem that was resulted by the one above was that every
mockup I made looked either like the iPhone or a LG Prada (or like all the
other mobiles with a touchscreen). These days nearly every touchscreen phone
   looks the same!
   - The last problem I came across was the thickness. Even if the bevels
around the display are removed (that makes about 3mm/0.12inch less), the
phone is still very thick. But I don't think there is a way to get it
   smaller...

Have a look at the mockup here: http://www.opkg.org/images/case_mockup.jpg

It would be really cool if someone could create a new case. I never liked
the original one, and something more "stylish" would be great.

Tobias

www.opkg.org - Relaunch!

2008-12-24 Thread Tobias Kündig
Dear Community,

After hours of coding I can present you my little christmas gift for
Openmoko and the whole community: The relaunch of www.opkg.org.
The whole site was recoded. There is a new system and a shiny new design.

These are the changes I made:

New Design
---

The old design wasn't very pretty. The new one is more professional and
hopefully user friendlier than the old one.

The best results you'll get on a resolution of 1280x1024 pixels. I'm
sure there are some displaying bugs in other browsers than firefox or in
other resolutions. If you find one, please drop me a line and I'll fix
it ASAP.

There are also some small goodies. For example all new packages since
your last visit are highlighted in the overview.

One note: Please remember that I don't speak English as first language.
So I'm sure there are a lot of grammatically mistakes in the text.
Please let me know that, so I can correct them.

Improved member area
---

If you are logged in, the member area are now appears on the homepage.
You'll find a list of all your packages with useful links like «Edit» or
«Restore older version». By the way, you now can delete your packages
yourself.

The API remains the same
---

The API wasn't changed at all. So if you began to write an application
using it, you don't have to change anything. It simply was ported to the
new system - but the results it gives you, are the same than the old one.

What you should change
---

The URLs for the RSS-Feeds have changed. So please update the URL in
your RSS-Reader. Furthermore I'm sure that not all updates since last
Friday are correctly imported into the database. So please check the
packages you updated since last Friday.

What's next?
---

There are some features I'd like to include in the future. First of all
there's a repository I'd like to create. And maybe I'll include a
feature where you can give the visitor information about the
compatibility of your package. So you can say, yes, it works on
OM2008.12 but not on FSO, for example.
Maybe I'll have to change the category names too because there is some
conversation on the mailing list about it. We'll see...
Of course I'd like to implement your ideas as well. So please write me
if you have a revolutionary idea.

Please let me know what you think of
the new site.

I wish you all a merry Christmas,
Tobias

www.opkg.org - Repository Alpha

2009-01-27 Thread Tobias Kündig
Dear community

I finally found some time to set up a simple repository for www.opkg.org. It
was difficult for me to figure out how exactly it is built. There isn't a
lot of information in the wiki and I've never done a repo before. However, I
like to try new things, so I wrote some little scripts that build a new
Packages(.gz) file every full hour.
To be honest, I'm not really sure if I've done it correctly. This is why I
ask the community to help me.

The repository's address is http://www.opkg.org/packages/.
Please feel free to test it and report any bugs/mistakes. I also appreciate
any suggestions on how I could make the system better. (How I said, I've
never done it before and actually don't have the knowledge to build a proper
repo.)
There are only the packages available that are stored on the
opkg.orgserver. The ones that are hosted on other servers aren't
included (yet).
I hope it won't break any systems - just to make sure: you test it _on your
own risk_.

Thanks in advance.

Re: www.opkg.org - Repository Alpha

2009-02-06 Thread Tobias Kündig
Hi there,

First of all: Thanks to everyone who tested the repo alpha. Thanks to them I
could find some problems, which I have tried to solve today:

   1. From now on, every package on opkg.org, not only the packages on my
server, are included in the repo.
   2. Some people told me about segfaults. So I took a closer look at the
Packages file on my server: http://www.opkg.org/packages/Packages
I'm not sure about this, but I think it is because there is not all the
needed information available. For example: Look at 'efplayer_0.3_arm.ipk' in
the Packages file. There is only a filename and a md5sum available. All
other information I take out of the ipk file is missing.

To be honest, I don't know how to solve this problem. Is it possible that
the ipk files are damaged? Maybe someone on the list, that knows more about
ipk-packages and repos than me, has an idea...

It would be great to get a feedback about the new repo version, thanks in
advance.

Regards,
Tobias

Yes, it is a simple script that fetches all the data out of the API [1],
then downloads the packages, generates all the needed data and uploads
it to the server. It's executed every hour, so the repo should stay up
to date.

Oh, that's something I didn't know. I'm not so familiar with GPL. But
it's good to know. I'll have a look at this, because I don't want to get
problems in the end. Thanks.

I didn't post about the repo, because it's still in developement -
exactly like the mobile version and some other things. By now it seems
to be usuable, but I'm sure there are some bugs left. If it's stable
once, I'll write about it. Another reason I don't post every idea I have
is that I'm never sure if (or when) I can realize it. You know, I hate
it to read about a great news, and then nothing happens for month (or
for ever). I don't want to make the same mistake, so I just wait until
I'm sure that a new feautre will be published soon.

It would be great to have such an application. Somewhen I found
something similar: Someone wrote a python app which is kind of a simple
frontend for the API, it sounded very promising. But I don't know where
it was anymore and I'm not sure if it is still being developed...

www.opkg.org ‒ source code released!

2009-02-21 Thread Tobias Kündig
Dear Community,

For nearly two month there was no update from www.opkg.org. The reason
for it is pretty simple: I had no time to develop anything for the
website. At the moment there's a whole lot going on around here.
However, I'm really pleased, that there are already 100+ packages in the
database. Thanks to everyone who made this possible.

But there are still some features needed, like a better comment system
with email notifications, for example.

So it wondered what I could do to solve this problem. Finding a solution
then was pretty simple: There are lots of great web developers out
there, people who know a whole lot more than I do. So I decided to
publish the opkg.org source code. This way _anyone_ can help developing
new features for www.opkg.org. I'm sure there are some great developers
with great ideas out there.

Re: www.opkg.org ‒ source code released!

2009-02-22 Thread Tobias Kündig
Hi Risto

That I don't have time to work on opkg.org doesn't mean that it is going
to die.
I will still work on it, but there won't be as much progress than we
have seen the past few month.

A blogpost is in the pipeline (not published yet, but will be tomorrow)
and I'll think about projects.openmoko.smthng, thanks for the idea.

Tobias

2008-10-06 Thread Tobias Kündig
Hello everyone

I'm working for a free german Linux-Magazine called Yalmagazine
(www.yalmagazine.org). We are publishing an article about the Openmoko
Freerunner this month.

I'm writing to ask you, if I may use some 2008.8 screenshots from the wiki:
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Om2008.8

I'm sure someone on this list can answer my question.

Thanks in advance,

Introducing http://www.opkg.org

2008-10-12 Thread Tobias Kündig
Hello everyone,

I'm proud to announce my newest project: http://www.opkg.org

It's a simple database of available *.ipk-Packages.
I know, some time ago there was someone other who planned to do
something like this. But it's been a long time since then. I don't think
they are working on it anymore...
It just confirms what everyone is saying about Openmoko: Everything is
unfinished and takes forever to be done. In my opinion that's not true.
All of you do a really great job. So I wanted to give my contribution to
the community and build that Homepage.

There is a lot to improve on the site. These are (some of) my targets:

* add Search-Box
* improve «Package-Detail»-Screen
* improve Home-Screen

Everybody is able to post new packages or edit packages. Just register
and log in. It would be great if all of you would help getting the
database populated. I added just a few packages, but I know there are more!

If you find any kind of bugs on the page (espacially spelling mistakes)
feel free to contact me. My first language is German - not English (I
think you realized that lines ago...). I'm also happy if you send me
your ideas and opinions!

Thank you.

Regards,
Tobias

Re: OpenMooCow 0.1

2008-10-15 Thread Tobias Kündig
It doesn't work for me.

If I tap the launcher icon the «loading...» screen appears, disappears and
then nothing happens. If I start it over ssh, there is no output and no
action on the neo either:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# export DISPLAY=:0
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# openmoocow
# (nothing happens - even after a few minutes. So, I press Ctrl + C)
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~#

I'm using FDOM
(Fat_and_Dirty_OM.200809_20080927.rootfs.jffs2)
with latest Kernel-Image (Om2008.9.uImage.bin) from
http://files.tdobson.net/openmoko/freerunner/fdom/

Anyone having the same problems?

Yes, can confirm that.
Newrotate and OpenMooCow don't work with not working accelerometers - of
course.

After a reboot, the accelerometers worked and so did the MooCow.

Really great job, it is really funny!
I'll add it to www.opkg.org if you don't mind.

I got the same error:

I've waited for a usable keyboard with big buttons. I would love to test
yours!
The Illume-Keyboard is great, but it's simply not the input method I am
searching for.

Has anyone fixed this bug yet? Is it possible that someone could share a
screenshot?

Thanks.

Alternative Case Designs

2008-10-25 Thread Tobias Kündig
Hello everyone!

I made a little tutorial about how you can change the look of your
Freerunner's Case.
It's available at http://www.opkg.org/specials/.

Maybe someone else wants to be creative too... ;-)

Regards,
Tobias

things).
