I would recommend Mobile Vikings if you want to use a bit of data, they are
by far the cheapest.
(and normal rates for text messages and calls)
I use this carrier for my Freerunner

if you pay 15 euro you will get 2000 free
SMS, and 2GB data (the free data and sms will expire after a month, but then
you still have your 15 euro's which you can use for texts, calling or data)

Seriously, you know I'm a fan of your software (wrote you a few e-mail IIRC)
but lately, in every thread I read, you are scaring away potential
contributors
and you never really answer the basic questions:

1) why don't you give people feedback on their patches?
2) why don't you use a mailinglist/SVN/bugtracker?
if you did this, you wouldn't have to worry about a fork:
3) what is bad about a fork?

I have no troubles whatsoever if you say: "It's my project and I don't want
to give anybody else even the slightest influence"
it's your right to do that
but ATM your words and actions are contradictory:

either say
a) that you want to do tangogps solo (or with a select few that you chose)
and tell people to fuck off with their stupid attempts at patches,
or say
b) that they are welcome to try and help out, and set up some infrastructure
or at least give them feedback
either way, there will be no need for anyone anymore to complain to you


Beaviour like this (previous e-mails) is making me consider to opkg remove
tangogps and install a fork as soon as it comes out
and no, this does not mean that forking is bad, this means that forking
gives people a choice
people will chose the best one
(like I did when we couldn't load gpx tracks in the official tangogps
version, but could in a patched version -

I forwarded you that message and got no response, for which I personally do
not blame you btw
It was only a forward and took me 2 seconds
But if I had written a patch, and got no response, I would seriously
consider not writing a patch again in the future


And yes, I'm not a programmer, but I have tried to do what I can; help
people on IRC in the early days, file bug reports, do some early testing for
a bunch of programmes, try to give feedback to the creators, add things to
the wiki, I even consider some of my posts on the ML us...)


In short:
please answer those three questions -1) 2) 3)- (or don't, that is an answer
on it's own)
and communicate a) or b)
(or c if you have a different opinion)
just make it sure that everyone knows what they can expect
because at this moment people have made efforts they wouldn't have done if
they had known were they stood (e.g. not getting any feedback to a patch)


I personally hope the project continues to evolve and improve, because I
find it a big addition to the available software on the openmoko.

SIM
you'll have to power down the wifi antenna

I'm a happy tangogps user, but it seems like google changed their satellite
url once again.
for google maps I use

and this one still works

could someone be so kind to give me the correct url for the satellite

no they can't, because tangogps uses images and navit uses vector data
this is also why the maps for navit are a lot smaller, but scrolling and
zooming takes more time
it might be possible to patch it to let it display google sat images and
display them; and calculate a route based on the (invisible) vectordata, but
that would require MAJOR work I think

2- To set up route , in
this step
after selecting country (Iran) , town should be selected , but there is not
town name in list , humble wrote town name manualy now, how to save it ? of
course humble started from

to setup route . are previous steps required?
The problem would be that the name town you wanted to select isn't in the
map data you downloaded
that could be due to (I think):
town not entered in openstreetmaps
town entered, but no "is_in: Iran" tag specified of something like that

you can correct this by contributing to OSM and editing the town's label


3 - To use speech  option on
Navit ,this speech-dispatcher  is required
but it's link  is down
I have never used speech, but I can navigate to

Does anyone know of a simple way to let the FR act like an USB keyboard?
(connecting it another machine with usb cable)
optional trackpad would also be nice of course

I personally think it's entirely up to you to release or not release the
source files (afterall, you could also  make a programme people have to pay
for)

maybe someone will propose a patch?

might be an idea worth considering:

have the possibility to calculate a route, and pre-render the bitmaps of
your route (at a few zoom-levels)
This way it doesn't have to be done on the fly when you know for example
where you are going to travel to
when you don't follow the planned route it will of course render new files
when nescessary

you should also have the option to delete them afterwards of course

or maybe a setting "two way trip";
this setting wil save all the rendered files on your way to your
destination,
use the pre-rendered images on your way back, and ask you if you want to
delete them when you return home

The European Union has opened its Egnos navigation augmentation system for
public use:

"The EGNOS signals can be received by GPS receivers equipped with a specific
software. In combination with Egnos signals, the accuracy of GPS navigation
can be improved significantly; according to ESA, users can navigate with an
accuracy of about 2 meters as opposed to GPS alone which provides an
accuracy of 10 meters."

Great  news!!
I think this is the most used app for the FR

I've navigated with it on a roadtrip (navit as a backup)
3500km though eastern europe in 5 days (no paper maps or other devices)
I used googlemaps to do the routing, converted the road to gpx and loaded it
in tangogps
this worked great
and we didn't get lost :-)

other apps also use the maps of tangogs (advanced geocaching and evopedia
for example)
which is an acknowledgement that it's a good programme


keep up the good work!
looking forward to further upgrades

(AFAIK cellhunter logs less information)

openBmap does the trick for both of them

yeah I tried  with a SIM that was expired (1year inactivity on a  pre-paid
SIM --> SIM gets deactivated)
it said "SOS only"
but openBmap could see anything
didn't try AT commands...

and canola)
charged the car by usb in the car
captured thousands of cell ID's with openBmap logger
used the FR as a flashlight (orrery)
played a game (acceleroids, mokomaze)
used the calculator (pCalc I think)
sent sms'es
made calls


not everything works as it should, but some things do :)

swapfile of 128MB, i could not opkg upgrade navit, but when I typed "opkg
install navit" it did work

but that can be 100% coincidence

Instead of ALWAY turning the screen, shouldn't it check if the screen is not
already in landscape?
When using the Fr in landscape and launching canola it reverts the
orientation.

I also suggest adding -e software_16_x11 by default

One thing I don't understand:
intone with a2dp: mplayer usage around 40% and sometimes spikes to
everything available (80-85%) ==> no fluent playback
intone without a2dp: 12% cpu ==> fluent playback

I don't know..
but I do know it would be VERY convenient for me (and probably
everyone who likes to listen to music with BT)

I will test the solution of Michael Sheldon, but this is not a "real"
solution, it should be configurable, everbody wants to use the
speakers or headphones now and then

a button in intone would be very useful

intone a2dp (bluetooth) support

I find intone by far the best music app (low cpu usage); but I can't
find a way to route the audio through
Currently I use mplayer -ao alsa:device=bluetooth /mp3/
I would love it if this would be possible with intone.

Does anybody know a way, or is there some work begin done?

btw: some info from joerg:
general rule: no audio app shall have a hardcoded audio device. A
setup option is mandatory
the only valid botch would be to have a unique dedicated device like
e.g. 'alsa-intone', then set up .asound to associate a physical device
to this symbolic name
nevertheless a lot of audio apps are borked and use a hardcoded
'default' device. This is absolutely deprecated

My personal preference goes out to openBmap,
because I think they combine quality and quantity;
quality: they log the most data (they are even working on TA)
quantity: they have all the cells of cellhunter and opencellid

I could be mistaken but from what i heard from onen (the creator of
openBmap) on ML and irc, I got the impression that he DOES want to
work together,
just not "only" sharing data, but i could be wrong

i have the exact same problem

first i had the strange behaviour of having a /dev/mtdblock6 AND a
/dev/mtdblock7 when booted from SD
i reflashed qi and the shr-filesystem to NAND, and now i only have
/dev/mtdblock6 and no /dev/mtdblock7 any more (which is good),

but when i try to boot from NAND i get the koolu splashscreen and then
nothing happens
