Hello world. Is the Neo Freerunner dead?

2009-07-07 Thread lists
Yep...
Hello there...

Apologies if I am beating the dead horse.
No pun intended... :)

I've been drooling over the Freerunner for years now, specifically to have
the capability to plug a REAL keyboard to it and SSH into my network.

Now it seems that Openmoko.com folded (or is about)...:(

My flow-gram of questions goes more or less as follows:

If Freerunner dead then
do I have an alternative
else
if Freerunner usable then
case OS:
Openmoko: Good? ;;
Android: Good? ;;
default: What? ;;
esac
else
do I have an alternative
fi
fi

I'm so bummed that Openmoko seems to be crumbling, or is it my doom's day
wild imagination?
My Treo 650 died and I am ready for a Neo Freerunner, but is it really
there?

I can tinker freely and willingly with the phone, but I need to
place/receive calls ans SSH into my network.
Thanks!
Enrique A. Troconis

Re: Hello world. Is the Neo Freerunner dead?

2009-07-07 Thread lists
THANKS! :)
I did read it:
It says the the successor of the the Freerunner is canceled, but what about
the Freerunner itself?
Is it still in production?
If alive, can the Freerunner be used reliably for business on a day to day
basis?
Under what system?
Will it talk to the AT&T's US network?
What do I tell them?

The "Developers only" ubiquitous tag seems to suggest that it may not "just
work".
Or does it?
If I can reliable place and receive calls, attach a REAL keyboard to it, and
open an SSH shell to my server, I want one! :)
Again, thanks!
Enrique

Re: Hello world. Is the Neo Freerunner dead?

2009-07-07 Thread lists
Thanks! :)

In the statement:
>> Openmoko:Good? 80%
>> Android:Good? 60%
>> default:SHR :)

Is the: "I can reliable communicate using this phone" part inside the 80-60%
or inside the 20-40%?
Where does the "I can attach a REAL keyboard and open an SSH shell"
statement fit?

And finally:
>> default:SHR :)
What does "SHR" mean?
Will it be better or worse than (fill in the blanks)
Or, in other words:
Which OS deliveries the most reliability on the phone so far?
Which OS deliveries the most freedom?

Again, thanks!
I'm liking the Freerunner way better then the Iphone already... :)

OK, I got me an A6 with the Buzz fix, which technically makes it an A7.

I have an hour and a half to upgrade my order to an A7...

So old, that it broke the Treo when I pulled it out... (screw the Treo)

I'm dizzy already, I don't understand none of that stuff...

Re: GOT MY PHONE!!! :) Doesn't work... :(

OK, this is part of the problem (I think)
My sim card is:
63513G 300164k smartchip does not respond to at+cimi

Which is listed as:
"SIM cards that don't work with original gsm firmware"

Now, I read it somewhere, but how do I open an SSH session into this thing
so I can follow those steps?
How do I get a keyboard on the screen?
Thanks!

I need a cookbook. Pleeeease...

2009-07-18 Thread lists
Hello community:
As the "I love/I hate Openmoko" thread unfold, I want voice my opinion:
I don't know.

I don't know because my phone came with some QT stuff that I haven't been
able to figure out and seems to not be discussed in this list.

So I've made a decided decision!
But I need help...

Obvious help...
This may seem abusive because I know that this information is out there, but
I faced the choice to get an Iphone that will "just work" (sort of anyway)
or get the device I *KNOW* I need, and I don't regret my decision, but I
just don't have the time now to devote to this toy.
I *REALLY* need a working tool...

I am unbelievable tied up in other projects and my new phone has been
sitting for 2 weeks on my desk... :(

Done with the apology, I hope someone here can provide me a simple cookbook
to change this QT thing to the latest Openmoko.
Something like:

1.- Go to (http://...) and connect the phone to your computer (I have this
one).
2.- Go to (http://...) and and flash the phone with the latest GSM (Maybe?)
3.- Go to (http://...) and and flash the phone with the latest ... 1
N.- Go to (http://...) and and flash the phone with the latest ... n
END .- Reboot the thing and SCREAM!!!

Any help will be appreciated.
If you feel a compelling need to insulting me for asking for obvious help,
please feel free to ignore thos message and save the list another useless
flame war.
THANKS!!!
Enrique

PS: But I *LOVE* the little I've seen... :)

Do I need a FAT SD card? Do I need OM? Do I need... ? Choices, Choices, Choices...

2009-07-19 Thread lists
Can I just ext3 the SD card ?
I'm not very fond of FAT...

Also, as of:
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Booting_from_SD
It says:
"WARNING: Booting from SDHC may cause problems at this time (see below)."

Should I even try to boot from the SD card?
Are there outstanding issues that I should know of?

How small of a card is too small?
Will 2GB be usable/enough or should I plan on something bigger/smaller?

Finally, should I "Om 2009" or "SHR" ?

Thanks!

Good morning Universe after the eclipse...

Short background:
I finally flashed my GSM with (something)11 and installed Parolli on my

Didn't like it (or couldn't figure it out) and re-flashed it with SHR.
WY easier to deal with than the QT thing it came with, and better
"conversation quality" (both ways)

Still learning...

So I started the browser.
Browser comes with warning "running as root"
WTF?!?!?!
Kill browser...

Now the question:
I want to create a user to run the browser with (easy),
and then configure the icon to run the browser using that user (no clue)
Anyone?

My phone hangs. Like the best of them... :(

Help...

After I finally got my Freerunner sort-of working, I have missed a few calls
because the screen ignores my attempts to get a call.
Or a text message...

In the worst instance, there was just a tiny lit up line on the screen and I
had to pull the battery.

The device seems to be responsive, because it changes from page to landscape
when I roll it, but it still ignores the touch...

Is this "normal"?
Has anybody experienced it?
Is there a fix?:(

I still have on the plastic it came with, but I an see it won't last a whole

Nothing...
The telephone rings and it is impossible to pick up the call or do anything
afterwards.
Or I just pick it up and is totally unresponsive.
Oblivious to CPR...

Re: This stupid phone is unbelievable COOL!!!! 8)

2009-07-24 Thread lists
I can relate to this one...
I was tasked to port this UNIX application from CORBA to Axis2C and I was
handed out a (WHAT?!) Window$ XP laptop...

I dual booted the Laptop (to have a fall back resource) and installed
Kubuntu. I slapped a virtual XP on top to do the windoze thing (Outlook ans
stuff like that). Then I created a Samba share that was pointed to an sshfs
mounted to the UNIX machine so I could browse the source directly from the
XP machine without scaring anyone.

For "work at home" days, I would fire the virtual M$, connect to the VPN and
login into the UNIX machine. Then I would set a reverse tunnel to my server
and then a reverse tunnel to the laptop.

I had scripts that detected the environment and mounted the filesystem
appropriately.
Pretty geeky... :)

PS: Gave up SHR.
Now I am OpenWRT(ing)
Hope it works...

OpenWrt ROCKS!!! :) So far... :| (And question about headset volume)

2009-07-24 Thread lists
Well, with OpenWrt I can finally place and receive calls and messages.
And the phone responds to the screen when I get a call after it goes to
sleep.

IT WORKS!!! 8)

However, the volume in the wire headseat is VERY low and I have no idea
about the bluetooth.

Does anybody knows how to make work either?
Prefer the wire...
THANKS!!!

[Openwrt] how do I update it ?

2009-07-25 Thread lists
Hello out there...

Finally Openwrt seems to be doing the job a need, a working phone, a working
messaging system and a working Xterm.

I need to get the headset and the bluetooth working, which leads me to the
question:

How do I update Openwrt ?
Is there a "dpkg" (or "opkg")
What's the normal procedure to install new software on a Openwrt Freerunner?
Thanks!

[Every distribution I've tried] How do I delete messages in bulk?

2009-07-26 Thread lists
Hello Intelligence...

Is there a GUI tool to delete messages in bulk?
Is there a way to do it with a shell script?

The problem:
I get way too many (most times useless) messages...
The only way I've found is to delete one at a time.
When deleting 125 messages, it gets old pretty quick... :(

Could I do something like:
rm `find /path/to/msgs -type f -exec grep -li "from my network" "{}" \;`

Can this be done in the GUI?
I guess that's an improvement I could write... :)
Thanks!
ET

PS: Back with SHR, seems to be working better now.
I installed:
0b76c9d620a36ea8a11ce510bc9e19f1 shr-image-om-gta02.jffs2
162ff7e58c7943a9d28cad9b6fb6bf3d uImage-GTA02.bin.bin
 -rw-r--r-- 1 113508352 2009-07-21 07:16 shr-image-om-gta02.jffs2
 -rw-r--r-- 11832584 2009-07-08 16:21 uImage-GTA02.bin.bin
Can anybody verify (or explain me how to verify) that those are the ones I
want?
What about the criteria to choose one over another? :)

Where are the archives of the list?

2009-07-26 Thread lists
I realize that many of my answers can be dug out from old messages, but I
haven't been able to find a link like:
"Type something here and search ALL messages"
Is there one?
I hate being a pest... :(
Thanks
