fso-gsm

2018-08-04 Thread mail
I'm using my freerunner as an everyday phone again after it was freed by the
freecalypso project's baseband firmware.

I'm running qtmoko v58 and would like to try this with fso-gsm; can anyone
point me to the necessary software? I believe I just need a copy of
libfsogsm.so.0.0.0? Also any advice, such as where to put that library would be
appreciated.

Thanks

modem firmware

2017-08-28 Thread mail
hello

There are step by step instructions to upgrade the modem firmware of your
freerunner to the latest moko13 release from the freecalypso community.

https://www.freecalypso.org/members/david/howtos/

The relevant howto includes a link to the release notes which include reasons
why you might wish to do this.

still there, but i think it's fair to say it's abandoned. The last versions
were as good as it got on the freerunner IMO, but the main (pretty much single)
developer got fed up with not having a decent kernel even after x years.

>shr: abandoned ?

the later versions were hopelessly broken and unusable on the freerunner.

yeah probably; anyway I'd definitely recommend qtmoko as the best bet

greetings from the freecalypso project

2015-11-16 Thread mail
Please excuse touch of plug and slight bit of off-topic-ness, but just to let
anyone here with interest in free (as in source code available) baseband
firmware, that the freecalypso project is making strides.

Progressing on from the stable leo2moko release for the freerunner made some
time ago, we are hopefully not too far away from offering a firmware compiled
entirely from source code (remaining binary blobs removed) by GCC.

We are particularly excited with recent progress targeting the Motorola C139,
very much a work in progress, but calls and SMS work and our firmware runs the
GUI!

Make a glance at

https://www.freecalypso.org

and

https://www.freecalypso.org/howtos/

Best wishes

Re: State of FreeCalypso

2015-04-28 Thread mail
FWIW, last I checked, his work does sadly not enjoy any of those
freedoms. Yes, you *can* look at the code, change it, and redistribute
it, but you're not legally allowed to because the source code he has
is proprietary.

le sigh

Imagine you are broke and starving hungry (that's quite easy where I live)

You notice that the local supermarket has forgotten to lock up the trash area,
where they chuck out perfectly good food coz it's gone past an arbitrary sell
by date.

You load up a bag with vegetables and you now have some appealing choices:-

1. you can eat the stuff raw or cook it
2. you could add a load of crap to it as in a frozen ready meal or prepare in a
wholesome recipe
3. you can share a meal with your starving spouse and mewling children
4. I dunno but I'm sure there is a four and more

So you were slightly naughty and trespassed, you grabbed something that wasn't
really yours, but it was **going to waste** and **no one really cares**. NOBODY
loses and a one plus person gets a meal.

Much better than running some binary blob you can't even look at, yes,

Yes indeed, very much better

but still very different from the the goals of Free Software.

Are they very different? Well when are these different goals gonna lead
anywhere in the case of a cell phone? I don't see anything other than
freecalypso.

Re: State of FreeCalypso

2015-04-23 Thread mail

I guess I was misled by OsmocomBB's website; it certainly seems to be saying
that that is exactly what it is--on the front page of http://bb.osmocom.org/:

In short: By using OsmocomBB on a compatible phone,
you will be able to make and receive phone calls,
send and receive SMS, etc. based on Free Software only.

As was mentioned here already the phone has to be connected to a laptop/PC as
part of the GSM stack runs on this, rather than on the phone.

There are use cases for such an arrangement no doubt, but not really as an end
user phone to carry in your pocket.

Lets not forget - just one man working doggedly on the only project that
offers any possibility of a cell phone running firmware that offers the four
 freedoms.

OsmocomBB?

No

A fine project I have no doubt, but it's not aimed at producing firmware for an
end-user phone.

I believe it's fair to say it's a hacking/investigative tool, but I'm happy to
be corrected by anyone that actually uses or works on it. I appreciated the
information on the unlock cable that they provide:-

+1 but s/partly/entirely [although I also didn't enjoy reading threats :-)]

In recognition of the fact that this project is going beyond the leo2moko
firmware port and the freerunner itself, I've updated the links to the howtos I
wrote for the existing firmware and tools that Michael has released:-

http://matthews.pm/freecalypso.html

(formerly http://matthews.pm/leo2moko.html)

There should not be any broken links, but if you do see any, please let me know.

Finally, please do donate generously - to Michael, not myself ^_~

Re: FreeCalypso status

2014-09-19 Thread mail
Hi Nick

The uSD slot in my freerunner is broken, so I figure these
instructions would be best for me:
http://www.matthews.pm/freerunner/leo2moko-p3.html

Yes that's the only option. I run from the uSD, but I don't see why that
method wouldn't work forty you.

And am I correct in thinking that the latest revision of FreeCalypso
is this:
ftp://ftp.ifctf.org/pub/GSM/FreeCalypso/leo2moko-r1-bin.tar.bz2

I leave that for Michael to answer.

Am I correct in thinking that once flashed, the phone should work
indistinguishably to the official firmware? SMS voice both fully
work?

Yes

I've put the leo2moko write ups that I publicized some months ago at

They will be removed from the original location within the next few weeks, so
if the free calypso baseband software project is of interest to you, please
make a note of the new location.

Re: Indiephone.eu

2014-07-07 Thread mail
Hi Michael

Is a GTA02 debug board any use to you? I'd be happy to mail it to you if so.

* 2014-12-31: GSM fw fully running on the Calypso baseband, controlled
by AT commands, which would be good enough for practical use on the
GTA02, but a toy on the other targets. Voice + SMS only; adding CSD
and GPRS would be subsequent extra work.

Excellent - I'm glad you decided to continue. From what I've seen and heard of
the UK supplier 3 (the only 3G only network here AFAIK), it's reasonable to
think 2G is going to still be around for a good long while, at least in some
parts of the world.

* 2015-06-30: the above plus the UI layers to make a Calypso dumbphone
with available schematics and no undocumented chips (e.g., Mot C139)
work as a practically usable cellphone running 100% free software
which any user can recompile from source and reflash at will.

In the hope of the project advancing to this stage, I'm interested in picking
up a dumbphone before I return to SA. Is the C139 the best bet? I notice that
osmocomBB says the C140 is virtually identical to this model. What about the
other phones oBB list as targets - is it reasonable to hope they will usably
run freecalypso? I'm guessing though that the gui code might be substantially
model specific?
