Re: Re: Openmoko Community Survey 2011 ? Results

2012-01-16 Thread neo
Hi Nikolaus,

The cheapest UMTS Android 2.2 device I can currently get in
Germany is at 129 EUR (most likely from some overstock clearance).
Has a 320x240 display, no sensors, no free and open software. No
hardware description, no schematics. Appears to be crap and much
less featured than the GTA04. But the poll result indicates this is the
 way we should go. Really?

I need to correct you in this case: The cheapest UMTS-Abdroid is the Huawei
Ideos X3 if I did not miss anything. It comes with Gingerbread 2.3, GPS,
Sensors (see
http://www.inside-handy.de/handys/huawei_u8510-ideos-x3/2432_allgemein.html)
for a price of 100 EUR. Of course it is absolutely not open and in my opinion
the GTA04 does not compete against it, but still it is a very usable phone for
little money.

However it is clear, that you will never be able to compete against those
prices unless you build a far bigger number of phones. The most people who
seriously consider buying a GTA04 will probably spend more money if the get all
the extra features. The GTA04 is not and will never be a mass market product:.

The layout of the PCB needs to be alltered ofcourse, but it seems that

Then, however you have the same problem as with reusing the Freerunner's case:
You need to use the same display as used for the parent' device. If you want a

Re: 2+4+2 timing seemed to disrupt access to the sdcard

2010-07-26 Thread neo
All this crashing caused some filesystem trouble. And then the
 second problem showed up.

I got i/o errors reading from the sdcard. Sometimes, I didn't get
tiles for tangogps or pictures for my contacts.

Unmounting the sdcard and running fsck ought to fix this. But the fix
was temporary. fsck would claim to fix some issues, and when I remounted
the card, I had normal access to the files. But it was
all in the page cache - it wasn't real. Reboot, and exactly the same
errors came up again. fsck would give exactly the same messages
while running. And things would work for a while, but another reboot
would always bring the same problems back.

It was as if writes to the sdcard failed - but failed silently. So the
kernel didn't notice. But nothing actually got written, it just stayed
in the page cache so everything seemed ok.

I also had a lot of hangs - probably because I have swap on the sdcard.
If swapping to the card silently fail, then surely there is
trouble when the stuff is swapped back in.

Do the sdcard and the glamo share a bus? Maybe glamo can handle a
 speed that the sdcard cannot?

This is not related to the timing settings. I still use the default timing
with new SHR-U and I have the same problem. I already opened a ticket in shr
trac: http://trac.shr-project.org/trac/ticket/1143

The problem came up woth the new kernel, so I guess there is a problem with the
sd driver in 2.6.32

That's probably the most elegant way.

What I would like then, is to have the sliding shelf in the same style as the

for some reason I often suffer from double (or triple or...) entries in
my /usr/lib/opkg/status and decided to write a little script that
removes double entries. To be safe I opted to remove the newer entries
 and keep only the oldest.

This is a good idea!

However, the script does to take the version into account. That led to the
deletion of the newer version in my case. No big deal as I checked the results
before putting the chnaged file into place, but still you might want to change

Re: Re: Latest SHR-?

2010-01-29 Thread neo
I'm not using shr-t or any .29-rc3 kernel, so I cannot comment. But on
shr ML and trac there was few reports about not getting GPS lock or GSM
channel (even with debug kernel) and at least 3 people said that they
are having this problem more often with nodebug kernel.

I am one of those people ;-) the problem with registering GSM is not caused by
the 'fast' kernel. However it occurs more often using the 'fast' kernel.
Obviously there is something going wrong in FSO if the system responds much
quicker than before with the debug kernel. I discussed that with Mickey last
week during our regular munich openmoko meeting nd he is currently working on a
solution for that problem, time permitting.

So I asked spaetz (maintainer of shr-t) and he said that we should
rather revert back to debug (as it's slower but as some say more
stable). If we want to test nodebug kernel, we should do it rather in
shr-u and *after* testing use it in shr-t too.

With the new kernel I was able to register GSM only when I gave the system
something to do (start navit for example). Then the modem registered correctly
and the PIN dialogue popped up. Sounds strange, but it's just like that (a
tribute to the mouse ;-) ). At the moment the debug kernel is better suited for
every day use, but on the other hand the system speed the freerunner is capable
of is amazing.

my FR, with reiseplanner maps, without this issue.

The patch in the ticket has been applied, please try with rev 2934+ and

This is not only true for MP maps but for OSM maps as well, at least with my

Re: Re: [SHR-t] navit crashes with Reiseplanner maps while searching for a town

2010-01-28 Thread neo
Then this is probably another issue for you, because the regression in
MG (reiseplanner) was caused by the use of new tags in OSM which
 weren't added to MG.
Does your OSM map version match navit's revision? If you use an old OSM
map, or a newer OSM map with a given revision of navit, it may fail to
work because of changes in the datas.

the planet.bin I use is from January 15th.

BTW : there are daily build of navit for the FR here :
 http://download.navit-project.org/navit/openmoko/svn/
They are built nightly, but it's also possible to trigger a build during
 the day.
I know! The problem is that in the SHR feeds the navit packages have an
additional versioning which allows the installation of the svn packages only,
if you disable the feeds before.
