Don't worry about it, the improvements will be back-ported. It's been a few months since GTA02 went GA and we still don't really have a working system, focusing most effort on GTA03 now seems to be an abandonment of freerunner owners. The situation GTA02 users are in now is similar to the situation GTA01 users were in when GTA02 came out. If anything, the GTA02 users are better off since there are more Freerunners out there than there are Neo1973s. Even if the people at Openmoko stop working on GTA02 completely and just create a stable, working rootfs for the phone, along with a reliable buildsystem. With the software in the state it was when the 02 came out, I certainly won't be buying a 03 until OM proves it can actually make something that's a useful product rather than just a public alpha. That's just common sense. If you want a working phone, just stick to the Freerunner, maybe try and help get it into a working state. Once the base system is working, you can always buy a GTA03 to get some new, faster, shinier hardware. this goes double if the alpha product is essentially left for dead without ever being fully working. Don't worry, the software on your phone is free, it'll stay supported as long as there's at least one user willing to keep building images/packages for it. You're likely to run out of replacement parts or break it unintentionally way before then. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

I've created the files /etc/udev/rules.d/80-freeruner.rules and /usr/local/sbin/freerunner-usb-add.sh as described in the wiki. The phone now connects automatically whenever I plug it in. I still have to run /etc/network/freerunner manually once per session in order to set up masquerading and DNS forwarding, but that's still much better than having to run ifdown usb0; ifup usb0 every time the phone is plugged in. It also works with FSO. 2. have working, reliable suspend/resume so that you can get more than 4 hours at a time, without breaking the other features This has been working for me for more than a month now. The only problem I've noticed is that either the GPS or GSM seems to sometimes go beserk. The main CPU is suspended but the phone is warm to the touch and the battery is emptied in a few hours. 3. provide working SMS, So far I've only got this to work with Qtopia. 4. have an address book, and calendar in some form that can be synchronized with desktop/online services to be done 5. have a GPS/mapping software that works. TangoGPS. So as best I can tell, we have 4 out of 5, but not even in any combination that can be run together. Since most of the development done for the FreeRunner seems to also benefit us GTA01 users, I'm pretty sure we'll get there in a few months. Also, since the main improvement over the previous version seems to be eyecandy, I don't feel like we're missing much by not having access to a pre-built 2008.8 image. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Re: QVGA V/s VGA for GTA03 (was something about yummy CPU-GPU combos!)
IMHO, if the 320x240 display is readable under bright sunlight, it might be a better choice than the VGA display used in the GTA01. With the current display, the phone looks great inside a building / conference hall / photo studio, but it's pretty much useless as a GPS device you'd want to use when you're outside. Before releasing a phone for the general public, pleasepleaseplease use it as your only phone for a week or so. Or you could add a radio transmitter to each of the clocks in lower, almost circular orbits, and then use the differences between the times recieved from multiple orbiting atomic clocks to pinpoint your locations. You'd need a lot of them, though, probably something like 24 clocks in 3 orbital planes. OK, maybe you could get by with 21, if you beleived you don't need any spares. addon sleeves / casings - wish
According to this image: http://www.areamobile.de/images/handies/FIC/Neo1973/200611081450Neo1973_Rot-Gruen.jpg, the Neo1973's casing is supposed to have two pairs of grooves on each side. Since many tinkerers will probably want to add hardware like powered USB hubs and other hardware to the phone, some sort of clip-on system might be useful. If the grooves are there for some other purpose - would it still be possible to add such a feature to the casing ?
