Could you clarify: are there going to be two 'Phases 1' - one for
developers at the end of March and the second on June? Could you tell
us something about discount for those who buy early Phase1 devices and
then want to buy next generation dev?

I think it is fair to say that wherever taxes and paperwork are
concerned, there will always be hassles.

I would definitely urge organizations that are hoping to participate
in GSoC this year to consider incorporating now. The process can take
quite awhile and it's a worthwhile enterprise regardless so that you
can more easily take donations, monetary and otherwise, from the
community.

For those organizations who cannot incorporate, consider contacting
the Software Freedom Law Center or Software in the Public Interest.
Both groups handle financials for open source organizations who have
not incorporated.

Does anyone else have sage advice to add here?

Best,
LH

Emerging Telephony Conference Discount (fwd)

2007-02-21 Thread michael

1. SVHMPC has invited us to use their discount code by claiming to be a
member of their club. Code is below.

2. If anyone wants to sign us up, some more info:

-- Forwarded message --

There's actually a web site for community organizers to use to register their
groups with O'Reilly. You get a discount on conferences, and it looks like you
can get complementary copies of books for the purpose of reviewing them in
newsletters.

The URL is http://ug.oreilly.com/

Cool stuff.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

-Cheers
-Matt H.

P.S. - I don't know what O'Reilly's policy on groups sharing discount codes is,
but our group is very inclusive. That is, you can be a member simply by saying,
"Hey, I'm interested in this stuff, I want to identify with others working on
open mobile phones." So if you can't get a discount code for your group in
time, I'm happy to "claim" anyone in the OpenMoko community as also being a
member of the homebrew mobile phone club. Our interests are aligned, so I don't
think it's a stretch. Please feel free to tell interested OpenMoko members
about the fact that we published our discount code on our list ( which is
available in our list archives at
http://telefono.revejo.org/pipermail/svhmpc_telefono.revejo.org/2007-February/000689.html

basic BT has a bandwidth of 768kbits/s if I remember right. And it's
good enough for High-Fidelity earphones, especially considering that
it support Quality-of-Service, which you don't get with pure WiFi stuff.

Then learn before you start to whine.
BT even in the most basic version will be enough for 90% of the
intended WiFi uses. Should we get some better BT, it can basically do
almost everything that WiFi can do and more. (Beside being WiFi
compatible *g*)

> Need to set up a server though, it won't just access my Linksys Box :(
Yeah, it's not WiFi. OTOH, at home that's not much an issue (USB
Bluetooth doongles are cheap), and on the road you won't be using much
WiFi hotspots (expensive, login page, etc.)

Ohhhmmm I've tested 1kByte/s bewteen two asterisks this is
a quite good quality. Remember that GSM codecs use 9600 or 14400 Baud

"Wide range of bit rates available (from 2 kbit/s to 44 kbit/s)"

I think you mean 2kbit/s instead of 2kbyte/s.
But with less then 1kB/s I would expect reduced quality.

No idea. It's not fast, but it's fast enough for email, irc, web, etc.
Since the Treo has little memory, I don't need to download MBs of files
to it. If I do need to download to the memory card (e.g. for podcasts),
I'll just take out the memory card and download via the laptop (this is
much much faster than using the USB sync for a Treo).

No idea. If I'm at home, then there is a laptop computer or a land-line
close by.

I would do it via USB (assuming that's much faster than bluetooth). My
rule of thumb is that a wired connection is always going to be faster
and more reliable than a wireless connection.

Never encounted such interference. My bluetooth gateway and wifi
gateway are a good 10m apart in different rooms (the bluetooth gateway
had to be located in the centre of the house, to get the range to both
ends of the house).

What sort of speed does this give you? Is it actually good enough for
VoIP over Bluetooth IP to be practical? If I didn't mind plugging in
the USB cable, but I did want a decently fast connection, would I
prefer to install updates/new software to my Neo with Bluetooth or

I usually read and respond to this mailing list on the Treo 650
downloaded from my external IMAP server (fastmail.fm) over the bluetooth
link via an NSLU2 and Linksys USBBT100 dongle. In fact, over 80% of my
email reading is done on the Treo in the first hour of the morning
(Australia morning immediately follows the US business day).

I also connect to IRC, can ssh, and surf the web, all over the bluetooth
connection.

I expect to be able to do the same with the Neo, except that it will be
a true PAN BT connection rather than the ppp over serial BT connection
that I use now.

A link I'm goin' to follow, if you say you actually get a Treo online with
this hack - I own a BEFW11S4 2.4 Wireless-B 802.11b, so I'm out here anyway.

It will access your Linksys NSLU2 running SlugOS with a bluetooth USB
dongle plugged into it, sitting beside your Linksys Router ...

I do this today with the Treo 650 to get bluetooth network coverage in

I was not aware Bluethoot is Network-Capable - Haven't got one, neither on
desktop or notebook, and believed Bluethoot was kinda USB-Wireless (wireless
Keyboards, some games, send of vCard) & not fully Ethernet-like.

Thanks, that's info!

Hello Marcel,

Do I understand correctly that you use Thunderbird?
And that you think Thunderbird isn't able to
a) filter this list?
or
b) do a reply to all?

If so, I'll try to be of some assistence:

Case a)
In Thunderbird goto Tools; Message Filters...; New...
Instead of "Subject" choose "Customize..."
Create a "New message header:" "List-Id" by ADDing it to the list

Use this in a new Filter Rule which checks for "List-Id" "contains"
"community.lists.openmoko.org" (without the quotes)

Case b)
In the Thunderbird menu you will find that Reply is CTRL-R
And Reply to All is simply . CTRL-SHIFT-R

Good luck in extending the use of Thunderbird!!

Well, if they take some extreme measures they probably could deny it,
based on EMEI numbers. But no, it probably will work, although some
networks callcenter support might have problems and insist to walk you
through a specific phone model menu to do something ;(

SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module btw :)

Basically phones come in different variants:
-) unlocked, you can put any SIM into it.
-) locked to SIMs specific operator.
-) locked to a specific SIM.

The last two are usually refered to as a SIMLOCK or simlocked phone,
and one usually gets one these in subsidized contracts. OTOH this is
strictly operator/country specific. There is one additional thing,
branded phones.

-) branded => that's orthogonal to the above, it means that the
firmware of the phone was altered to do things for a given operator.
Usually this involves logos, binding certain hotkeys to a fixed WAP
dialin. Or some US operators have been known to kill features that
would allow transfering images out of the phone with something else
than their data plan :(

It's orthogonal, because there are branded phones that are not
simlocked, and one can put a different SIM into it and use it.

As examples:
In Austria, most phones bought at a shop operated by a network are
simlocked to the network of the operator. (Speciality phones sometimes
are not, because they are sold in to small numbers)

In Germany, they like to brand the phones, but they usually come
without a simlock.

But it does. That's why you have a "group reply" function in your
mailer. Some advanced mailers might even have a special "list reply"
function *g*

OTOH, adding a Reply-To to the messages pointing to the list makes
replying just to the poster for offtopic messages hard.

> mailinglist. I have to add the mailaddress myself. (this is the only
> mailinglist that I know, that does that this way)A
Nope, most technical mailing lists work this way. Only mailing lists
targeted to endusers that might have troubles operating their MUAs are
setup to include a Reply-To usually.

Okay, indeed very interesting, but still, currently I have to click
Reply All (that's two steps in Gmail) if I want to reply to the list,
and then cut and paste the list email address over to the "To" address
field (to overwrite address from the person whose message you are
responding to), two more steps.
That's a total of 4 steps just to reply to one message.
Sue me, I'm lazy (as should be all software developers and testers)

But I'll just follow those 4 steps, though it makes it kinda hard to
reply to this list via a mobile phone. (you don't want to know how much
KBs get wasted in those transactions) :-)

I agree with this, and I'd also like to add that this list should also

In contrast to CDMA phones, a GSM phone isn't normally locked to a

locked to your carrier.
Some carriers offer you bundles with phones that are simlocked

Well what I'd like it to be is to connect the phone using the usbcable
to the pc. And them somehow share the internet connection. It should
be possible via for instance usbnet, but I've never been able to get
it working.
If Openmoko could somehow aid in that process, would make it for me a
killer device. :)
That would make upgrading the phone a whole lot easier (and cheaper,
not using the dataplan of your carrier)

Several solutions have been mentioned on

See, that makes sense to me. I just didn't know it was there. /grin
Now I know better.

Sorry, didn't notice that replying doesn't automatically go to the

Thank you for correcting me. =)
I have never seen the last commited verison in the local working directory
structure so I will have to check that out and see where its located.

Fwd: Please think about incrementel sync Re: Another idea for an application for the Neo: Instant sync to web page duplicating info on phone

2006-11-29 Thread Jeff Andros

Without thougths like that you will have an incredible GPRS traffic =
costs.

I don't do a lot of data on my phone at the moment mostly I use bluetooth
for this kind of thing, so I hadn't thought about costs... the other thing
we could try is an XML transfer of just the data, offloading the formatting
onto another server... the cool thing about this is we could run both
directly from the phone or from an intermediary depending on preferences and
the particular situation.

When you use an intermediary server, that will handle the heavy lifting on
building the page and you could have a nice ajax-y interface, direct from
the phone you could remotely store an XSL-T stylesheet to give you the
frontend. this minimizes the data that needs to go back and forth. sending
files back and forth I'd rather use something else, but in a pinch we could
use an svn client which does send only the file diffs back and forth, plus
storing the whole machine's drive on subversion gives us a nice backup in
case someone throws you into the pool with your phone in your pocket (it's
all fun and games until someone loses thier {email | phonebook | files |
blackmail photos of drunk friends}) you could also use this like so:

{user to phone} request update/commit cycle from phone to repository
{user on desktop} update local copy of phone filesystem
{user on desktop} make appropriate changes to files
{user on desktop} commit to repository
{user to phone} request update from repository

where you are not on your phone, and are making commands from a browser

Apache/whichever servers we're running handles the encryption, and now you
can get to the current version of your system through websvn from anywhere

Fwd: multicolour multi-touch screen Re: OpenMoko/Neo1973 is pure (r)evolution :))) - do you recognized the power of "multi-touch gesture recognition"

so... if we've got an optical system like this, would it also be possible to
use the screen to scan in small documents(business cards) I think I saw
something like this years back, and this would be a perfect platform for
that idea... especially if we can throw in some OCR
