Hi all, I am new to openmoko community. I have recentely purchased Neo Freerunner hardware from distributors in India. It is wonderful hardware & software and most of the featuers are working well. Then I just asked for something I could do for SHR - Ainulindale (IIRC) said that we need new settings app. And I wrote it, and SHR Settings is now in all images, and i'm SHR coreteam member :) AFAIK same was with pyphonelog, mokonnect, ffalarms and few other apps. SHR has also the best (in my opinion) system for handling patches, everyone can do "git send-email" to shr-devel list and patches will arrive in our patchwork. There is coreteam, but most important and almost all visible changes in images are voted by community. Coreteam handles more "smart" issues, as discussing how to handle stable->testing->unstable system, new phoneui API, coding schemes and other things, but results of coreteam discussions are also discussed by users after that. And AFAIK in coreteam ATM are *all* of people who just asked for that when coreteam was created. So to sum up: in my experience SHR development seems to be the most easy to join than in other big Openmoko distros. And SHR is open to new packages and UIs - the whole concept of libframeworkd-phonegui is about openness and having choise. -- Sebastian Krzyszkowiak dos ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Re: Hi
Roland, > Seeing that none of the distro's really do (seeing that they are > produced by hackers who are mostly hacking for their own enjoyment > it's not really surprising and you can't really blame the teams) I would agree, but what's your solution? The one idea I have is that maybe stable releases are the common denominator: Insist on stable interfaces, crystal clear distinction between stable, testing and unstable branches. That may be one way to bring the hackers and regular users together, since I believe at least a large part of hackers understands and agrees with the value of well maintained stable releases, well tested upgrade paths from one stable release to the next, a clear process of how stuff moves from unstable to testing to stable. It would still require some tough choices though, because there are some that don't care about stable releases (I'm not blaming them same as you - they do this for their own enjoyment). Maybe their stuff stays in unstable forever :-) What do you think? I would recommend that you choose which ever distro keeps their "how to make your Neo work as a phone for most of the time using this distro as well as running other standard services reliably" wiki page up to date and by up to date I mean referring to which ever is the most useable bootloader, build, kernel currently available even if that is the daily build. It should also assume that the reader is a complete novice and is neither a hacker or a linux sysadmin. Seeing that none of the distro's really do (seeing that they are produced by hackers who are mostly hacking for their own enjoyment it's not really surprising and you can't really blame the teams) you've got a wide choice. New user saying hi
Hi All, I don't usually use mailing lists, so I hope it's not bad etiquette just to say hi! I've bought a Neo Freerunner and debug board - all looks pretty good so far. This is my first real use of Linux and I'm beginning to feel like I'm throwing myself off the deep end a bit, but I'm a self-taught programmer by profession so hopefully I can get the hang of it. I've tried out the Qtopia GTA02 release and now the OM2008.08 release, finally managed to get connected to the internet and am just working my way through a few installers. What really interested me about this project however was the possibility that I might be able to get into the user interface development a bit. I have a few ideas for a mobile GUI that I'd like to put into practice. So far, most of my research has brought up details on building applications, but very little on messing about with interface underneath. Is there currently an SDK or any form of information that can help me get started with this? I hope I haven't missed any FAQs or something obvious, but I really have been searching for days! Thanks, Chris. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

I have seen a commit just this morning by the username abraxa for openmoko-mediaplayer2 with changes to a lot of files. But that doesn't mean it is actively developed. Anyway, I managed to play some songs after manually creating a playlist (the in-program editor does not work). Don't know, however, if mediaplayer supports or ever will video media. The current SVN code doesn't work, simply because gstreamer doesn't yet work (while alsa does: I've played music files from /media/card using ogg123). There was another music player under the old (outdated) user interface that didn't use gstreamer (http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Music_Player). These are suggestions for QEMU use in general, so if you are already familiar with QEMU and are wondering specifically about making OpenMoko more sprightly, you'll have to be more specific (and perhaps ask on the devel list, where the deep magic happens). QEMU is CPU-bound and a memory hog, so make sure you are giving it as much memory as you can. OpenMoko shouldn't need a ton of memory, but I don't think it would hurt to give it more than it needs - say, a gigabyte. If you need to put more memory into your computer, this would be a good time. If you are using a processor with hyperthreading, ensure that the QEMU process is running on real cores and not a virtual core. QEMU necessarily has some overhead because of the way that it is designed, but there is a kernel module called kqemu that overcomes the overhead, making the VM run at nearly the speed it would on bare metal. Best of luck wrangling QEMU into shape! ___ OpenMoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

They require pictures with 300dpi resolution and if you scale 75dpi picture (as all here) to 300dpi you get very little ones. I'd better have some bigger pictures - the bigger they are the more people is going to read article about OpenMoko. Would it be feasable, to re-scale the images up to 300dpi? sure, this will create slightly blurred/blocky photos, but I think you would get enough quality for it to work?
