from what i can tell, locations stores the maps in it's own format,
which is not compatible with tango, which directly uses the png files
 supplied by osm:

Would it not be better to use googlemaps wherever made possible by GPRS?

I don't think so :

Locations :
ls /tmp/diversity-maps/osm/14/8295/
5635.png 5636.png 5637.png 5638.png

TangoGPS
ls /home/root/Maps/OSM/14/8295/ ()
5632.png 5634.png 5636.png 5638.png
5633.png 5635.png 5637.png 5639.png

diff /home/root/Maps/OSM/14/8295/5638.png
/tmp/diversity-maps/osm/14/8295/5638.png

Maybe copying the maps from TangoGPS to /tmp/diversity-maps/ would work,
without the need for packing them with om-locations-map-pack.

1. There is not standard for offiline map archiving, so why be surprised
if some open programs use a their format to archive data?

The important is that the way how they archive the maps is full open and
fully documented.

2. Google maps are not yours and you must to use it according their
license: and its license don't permit to do a lot of nice things.

 I don't think so :

did you compare the files?
i gather the naming derives from the gps location data, thus the file
names for the same areas should be the same regardless of the format being
different.
similar names are not sufficient, as said above -- compare the files
(identify -verbose 5638.png)

Sorry for crashing this discussion, but could you clarify why there
would be a difference between a png saved by tangogps and locations?

If they both use the exact same areas, the exact same name, and they
both save it as a png then it *should* be compatible. Anything else
seems way too crazy, no?

i wouldn't know -- i don't use locations.
but why shouldn't there be _no_ difference?

how would i know? someone suggested there's a difference and the
questioner did apparenetly no other check than comparing directory
structures and file names.
so, to sort the issue out what's left is comparing the actual images,
don't you think?

So the question is, how to make locations to cache it in the place you
like it to be cached...
