2011-05-23 Thread FaberfoX
You will need to uninstall compiz and it's dependent packages and then install
maverick versions of them.
The list of the ones I installed is this:

compiz_0.8.6-0ubuntu9.2_all.deb
compizconfig-backend-gconf_0.8.4-1ubuntu5_i386.deb
compizconfig-settings-manager_0.8.2-0ubuntu1_all.deb
compiz-core_0.8.6-0ubuntu9.2_i386.deb
compiz-fusion-plugins-extra_0.8.6-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
compiz-fusion-plugins-main_0.8.6-0ubuntu2_i386.deb
compiz-gnome_0.8.6-0ubuntu9.2_i386.deb
compiz-plugins_0.8.6-0ubuntu9.2_i386.deb
libcompizconfig0_0.8.4-0ubuntu3_i386.deb
libdecoration0_0.8.6-0ubuntu1~ppa1_i386.deb

After installing these lock version using synaptic for compiz and
compiz-core so that they're not auto updated.

[Compiz] [Bug 767095] Re: 1 pixel icons in notification-area-applet when compiz is the windows manager

2011-05-23 Thread Gergely Fábián
Hi all,

I've been watching this bug on two computers (both are constantly updated
natties), and I have noticed that Skype icons appears after each second
restart. So at each "odd" restart it's invisible, but at each "even" restart
it's visible. I have seen checked, and it's not dependent on the login (I can
log out and in, but Skype will be still in the "current state"), but the
restart.
I haven't applied any other workaround.
I don't know whether this helps.

And to join tkoun... I have switched two machines to Natty that I'm
rarely using. The one that is the most used is still on Maverick, and I
won't upgrade it until this bug is fixed. If it won't be fixed (maybe
due to it's "Invalidity" or "Low" priority) then I may consider
switching to Debian or other distro. I have seen many new Ubuntu
versions at the beginning (even in alpha/beta), but this one with this
bug seems to be the worse (and I'm sorry, if I need to contact my
colleagues all day long by Skype, and I'm effectively unable to do that,
then how should I consider this bug?).

2011-05-23 Thread Rocko
> Uniity does not have notification area for systray apps.

Just a small correction - unity *does* have a notification area for
systray apps - that's where Skype appears - and that is where the
1-pixel problem is happening, almost as if the notification area were
being created 1 pixel high and apps were being added to it (and hence
their icons scaled to 1 pixel) before it gets resized.

FYI, you have to whitelist apps to allow them to appear there (eg see
http://www.fewt.com/2011/03/whitelist-utility-script-to-allow-apps.html
for a useful script).

It means you are not running gnome-panel, Unity does not run it.
Uniity does not have notification area for systray apps. check it wit
a non QT app like miro, or the vino-preferences' icon.

This is FLOSS. Compiz folks does their work well and we must thank them.
The duty of a *distributor* is to bring working software to users, not
the last blending edge and unpatched stuff from git.

RMS sings "Join us and share the software". But surely he doesn't use
Ubuntu and its not-working-at-all-desktop-experience. As I know,

it's a show stopper,
why? (let me give you a typical use-case)
because my wife couldn't have installed compiz 0.8.6 from Guiodic's PPA and if
I was not there she would have simply rebooted to her Windows 7 partition not
to return again in Linux land.

by the way metacity (the "no effects" alternative) simply sucks with
video overlaying on 64bit/ATI-Radeon machine.

PS: I guess dealing with my frustration about this makes me wanna joke,
as Stallman would have said "Join us now and save the software...

@tkoun
It's not a "show stopper." This bug doesn't need more duplicates for progress
to be made on it (and generally speaking, no duplicates are necessary for
progress to be made on a bug). But discussion about duplicates is still
worthwhile, because it's important to determine whether or not people are
experiencing the same bug, or a different bug. With that said, I do agree with
your sentiment that this extremely widespread bug has been sitting around for a
long time without any apparent work toward a fix.

2011-05-23 Thread Eliah Kagan
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 767095 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/767095

@Guiodic "what progress?"
Perhaps "significantly more progress" was a bit too strong. But bug 767095 is
marked Confirmed, has been assigned High importance in Natty, has considerable
more discussion than this bug, is marked to affect six times as many people as
this bug, and has considerably more subscribers as well. It seems to be the
"primary" bug in which this problem is being worked on (even if very little
actual work on it is being done, right now).

Has this bug been marked as a duplicate of bug 767095 in the past
(before just today, when you marked it as such)? Was it, at some point,
considered not to be a duplicate? (You don't have to answer that
question; it doesn't seem important that it be explained right now, and
I don't want to waste your time.)

I see what you mean. You do need to use a very specific shade of black
for it to be a real problem, so I'd define this a bug of 'low'
importance.

The solution might be for compiz to pay some attention to what the
background colour is and adapt the highlight accordingly.

[Compiz] [Bug 775196] Re: notification area doesn't work properly under compiz

2011-05-23 Thread Eliah Kagan
Is there any reason this bug should not be marked as a duplicate of bug
767095? (That bug is newer but it has considerably more subscribers, a
much higher count of affected users, and significantly more progress has
been made on it, as can be seen by examining its statuses in various
packages. Specifically, it has been assigned High importance in Natty.
If this is marked a duplicate of bug 767095, then if judged appropriate,
perhaps compiz could be added to that bug as an affected package.)

I have the same problem. Compiz is taking up over 2 GiB of memory and
after a unity --replace the used memory goes down. This problem makes

Surely it is, so I removed the link as a duplicate of a gnome-panel
related bug.

I 'm using compiz 0.8.6 on Natty and the issue is not present.

Then, the bug should be fixed in compiz or in gnome-panel but this isn't
clear at this moment.

[Compiz] [Bug 783858] Re: unity-window-decorator crashes when a java application closes a progress dialog window

2011-05-23 Thread Maurice Knopp
This is affecting me as well in "Ubuntu Classic" aka Gnome environment.
I use Intellij IDEA and some other java applications wich ran without
problems in 10.04 and 9.04. My colleagues (all using ThinkStation S10
with NVIDIA Quadro FX 1700 and binary driver) have the exact same issue,
regardless of using unity or classic gnome.

Right now, I run "compiz --replace" every time the window decorator
crashes to recover from that bug. On a normal workday this bug occurs
from 10-20 times. Pretty annoying :)

[Compiz] [Bug 786505] Re: Window management - Super + W does not zoom out on all windows in all workspaces - minimized windows are ignored

2011-05-23 Thread Brendan Donegan
Since this is a usability issue that doesn't affect functionality
(minimized windows can still be accessed through Super+Tab), and compiz
is a core application it should be 'Medium' importance.

2011-05-23 Thread Brendan Donegan
Hi,

I can confirm this bug, so marking it as such. I don't see any reason
why minimized windows should be excluded.

[Compiz] [Bug 775196] Re: notification area doesn't work properly under compiz

2011-05-23 Thread Adam Łyskawa
Tested on Ubuntu 11.04 and Mint 11. Fully reproducible.

Steps to reproduce:

1. log on to Gnome (no effects) desktop
2. sudo apt-get install fusion-icon (will be used to test settings)
3. sudo apt-get install keepassx (just a sample Qt application, can be skype or
any other),
4. change KeePassX (or any other Qt application) settings to display tray icon,
5. if the tray icon appears correctly, just restart Qt app (icon should be
reduced to 1 pixel, if not, repeat restarting)
6. use Fusion Icon to change window manager to Metacity,
7. restart Qt application a few times - now the tray icon should appear
correctly each start
8. switch back window manager to Compiz
9. restart Qt application a few times - the tray icon disappears most of the
time

Note that due to random behavior all user submitted "workarounds" are
misleading, because none of them really works (except disabling Compiz
or restarting gnome-panel in any way). People (including myself) notice,
they change this and that, and suddenly the icon appears. But it's
random. It's not a result of any particular user activity.

The one and only workaround for this problem is replacing the window
manager with metacity.

This bug could be also posted as gnome, gnome-panel, gnome-notification-
area bug, but it's really difficult to tell what's wrong here. As my
test procedure shows - the problem is somewhere between gnome-panel and
Compiz.

This bug is a major blocker for people still using Gnome 2.

[Compiz] [Bug 771238] Re: Compiz 100% CPU over all cores after resuming from sleep

2011-05-23 Thread Alexander
I have the same bug with AMD Phenom II and ATI 4770. When I suspending
computer after hibernate system indicator show me 75-85% consuming CPU.
In system monitor compiz consume 295-300% cpu. It seems like other bug
in system monitor (300% consuming m.b. full consuming 3 cores of 4 in my
processor)

[Compiz] [Bug 786325] Re: Unable to change mouse cursor theme and size

This is a bug in Compiz. Compiz 9 has no option to change mouse themes.
I disabled Compiz to play the game Football Manager and the mouse cursor
theme and size was correct.

[Compiz] [Bug 710377] Re: cant move or resize windows with compiz

2011-05-23 Thread Juan Marroquin
Just did a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04 x64 and configured with
Classic Gnome and nVidia Accelerated Driver (183 I think).

Everything was fine until I installed Compiz and Settings Manager for
Compiz. After enabling cube, I immediately got my windows stuck, unable
to move them. Googled around and found this bug report.

I already enabled "resize window" and "move window" un Compiz Settings
Manager. I also restarted my computer (HP DV7-1183 laptop) and still
can't move my windows. i tryed adding Gnome compatibility under General.

I'll be glad to upload a screenshot if anybody needs it.

[Compiz] [Bug 778490] Re: Random logout after upgrading to Natty Narwhal 11.04

2011-05-23 Thread Kyle Clements
I've done 2 fresh installs of 11.04, and I haven't made any
modifications to my system beyond installing some applications (gimp,
pidgin, chromium, gftp)

On both installs, I was affected by this bug. System randomly logs me
out. Most often while browsing, (my main browser is chromium)

sometimes the system even logs out while the computer is idle.

It will happen multiple times. The log out then log back in work around
does not work for me. My current session has logged out on me 3 times
this evening.
