There are certain applications that should be handled in a windows-centric way : - terminal windows - editors like gvim - some users might also prefer windows-centricity for office documents Please take into account this scenario : - one terminal with a ssh connection - one terminal for watching a log file - one terminal for editing source code - one terminal for compile+execute Handling all these 4 terminal windows as a single application is a very bad idea because each window has a very separate purpose in the workflow. In fact 4 windows are DIFFERENT applications from the user's point of view : - ssh client - editor - bash - tail -f These are different applications that only happen to be executed withing the same terminal. The user will want to minimize/maximize/close any of the 4 windows independently . I have exactly the same symptoms, except the screensaver: screen freezes while I'm actively working with documents, so the system is not idle. Additionally audio is working perfectly (it still plays music, etc). I've got a fix for one case of this happening, where the client sets the WM_TRANSIENT_FOR hint before compiz has a chance to set an input frame. I know there are other cases too, so if you keep getting this crash after the next SRU, please let me know. I will attach a testcase which shows this happening later. Why? Is this your personal decision or opinion? This bug is backed by lengthy discussions in the ayatana mailing list. I'm confident the majority in the ayatana community would welcome 1) further discussing such changes and improvements, refining them, doing usability tests and so on and finally 2) rolling out such changes and improvements into the default Ubuntu experience Unity is not a finished product, it has severe usability bugs. Those need to be fixed in the core product. I think I'm experiencing this same problem, but with the ati (open source) driver. When it freezes, I am sometimes able to do Alt-F2 to get to the console and kill compiz (and then continue operation), but most of the time it's a complete freeze - requiring a reboot. I am experiencing almost similar thing. I am coding asp.net application from mono develop. Now when I compile run it, The focus seems to be transfered to mozilla firefox window. But the input focus is always on mono develop. If I even try to enter some text in textbox, the textbox gets focused but the keystrokes goes direct to mono, sometimes even changing my code. The way I use to restore is to focus mono back to mozilla again. Ok, sorry for my English. I make some tests with miscellaneous compiz configurations. On my nVidia GTX 260 (Gold series, 216 cores, offical nvidia drivers) with enabled VBlank and refresh rate 120Hz (monitor refresh rate x2) compiz works good until: - run browser (Firefox). FPS when dragging windows drops down after serval minutes. - try to group windows. No matter if I only group, or tabbling it, FPS drop down immediately for all windows, not only for grouped/tabbled. - turn off option Lazy Positioning in Drag Window plugin configuration.
