[Compiz] [Bug 803296] Re: Compiz Resize plugin: When "Default Resize Mode" = Normal, resizing is extremely slow and CPU intensive

2011-08-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I'm seeing most of the CPU is consumed by Xorg. However I think that's
misleading and it's not a driver/xorg issue at all. Because a very large
amount of the CPU is also consumed by the app being resized. This means
(almost certainly) that the problem is simply compiz sending too many
resize events to the window. Haven't checked the source code yet to
verify...

Normal resize is only slow on the binary nvidia driver and on intel
cards. It's fast everywhere else (nouveau, radeonhd)

2011-08-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I dare say this is not a bug. The default compiz settings are chosen
this way. They are working as designed. But I agree it would be nice for
the default compiz Resize method to change to Normal in a future
release.

Note however bug 803296 where the "Normal" resize method is currently
extremely slow in compiz 0.9.4. That bug is one good reason for Resize
behaving how it does.

[Compiz] [Bug 762032] Re: alt+tab broken with click-to-focus off

2011-08-29 Thread David Baird
I would like to politely correct the author of post #11, who says this
is only "a particular use-case." The author is mistaken to believe that
the (well written) steps to reproduction make it sound like this is an
obscure use case, whereas this is actually substantial use case, as
iterated in post #12.

Up until *now*, the ability to have coexistence of ALT-TAB and mouse-
hover-focus has been an extremely useful way of choosing where to focus.
And, it has been supported quite well in numerous windowing systems,
including GNOME.

But now it is broken; And it is broken in an obscure way, which
necessitates the complex reproduction instructions of this bug report.

[Compiz] [Bug 821648] Re: compiz performances

2011-08-29 Thread Guillaume
My maximum framerate is at 60 and I tried with and without the Detect
refresh rate and I tried with the bug 92599 workaround and it does the
same thing, the cpu is used at 100% again when I resize. When I resize
by one or two pixel I got a fine framerate, but I can see again that it
use a lot of cpu, about to 40%, but when I resize faster than this, I
see my cpu core used by 100% by the application during the resize, and
it's not happen with other window manager.

Please also check your compiz refresh rate setting:

  Refresh Rate

It should be the same as your monitor's vertical refresh rate. If the
refresh rate is too high then of course it will consume more CPU than
normal.

Ideally Detect Refresh Rate should be ticked ON and you should have the
workaround described in bug 92599 configured. In my experience that has
solved all framerate issues with Nvidia chips.

I can see it's not related with my graphic card, because It use 100% of

lot of window. I got an i5 2.23, I don't know why it can lag like this I
post a video on youtube showing my screen, we can see the cpu usage in
the graph, and we can see that when I start to resize, everything froze,
including the little panel graph... here's the link:

@paultag Nope, top didn't show 100% CPU usage. However, zeitgeist-
datahub was a zombie. What is more confusing is that I booted in into

UTC 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux, and compiz --repl... did the same
thing but metacity --replace didn't actually appear - the freeze was
still there. It is confusing because with one kernel it looks like a
fault with compiz, while with another it looks like a fault with Xorg.
It is seriously bugging me.

2011-08-29 Thread Paul Tagliamonte
Ah, cool.

Can you SSH in when this happens and do a `top`? See if it uses up 100%
of CPU, if so, I might have this same issue (freeky).

In the meantime, I'm also pushing this on compiz. Thanks!

[Compiz] [Bug 830949] Re: [Intel N10 Graphics] Plugging in external monitor to VGA port makes both displays corrupted with thick slanted lines

2011-08-29 Thread Jay Taoko
There seems to have been some changes in the monitor display setting. As
of today if I plug in an external monitor into my Dell mini 9, the
monitor display settings no longer shows all supported resolutions of
the external monitor. It shows only 800x600 and 1024x768. My external
display support up to 1280x1024.

I am not sure if this is a new development from the driver in order to
reduce the external resolution to something that can be handle properly
by the dell mini 9 GPU.

Can you report if you are getting the same thing on your N10 systems?

[Compiz] [Bug 775060] [NEW] Random GUI "freezes" in Natty (can only move the cursor) (might be a segfault)

2011-08-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: xorg

My screen "freezes" from time to time in Natty (didn't happen in Maverick). All
I can do is move my cursor. I have tried going into the terminal and restarting
the gdm, but
that doesn't do anything.

This occurs at random periods, it can happen multiple times in a day or once in
a week.
This started when I installed a clean install of Natty. Maverick and Lucid work
fine.
I haven't tested this without Unity.
Pidgin, Dropbox and Chrome(or Firefox, as it happened before I got Chrome too)
are the apps that are running during the lockup. Sometimes accompanied by
Minecraft (Java + native libraries for JOGL [Java OpenGL]).

Note: I am not sure if it is a X.org issue, although I was told that it
probably is on askubuntu.com...
Tried service gdm restart. Gives black screen (some network related text on the
7th screen). Same with killall compiz. Even pskill X...

Okay. So now as I changed sync to VBlank to false and refresh rate to my
screen's, instead of being all calm, everything starts flashing as if I
was minimising and unminimising windows, commonly with colour issues
(such as grey being displayed as a random colour).

Right, so I have output of unity 2>&1 | tee unity.log.

[Compiz] [Bug 813365] Re: compiz leaks memory, becomes sluggish and unusable after using it for few hours

2011-08-29 Thread Tony Mobily
Hi,

Thumbs up if you can please fix this issue. I can confirm that switching
between desktops is the problem here. To fix it, I go to text-mode
console and issue a killall compiz or, worse, killall -9 compiz.

I will look into Unity-2d, I wasn't even aware of it...

Merc.

For any unrelated problem with unrelated kernel versions might be filed under a
different ticket I guess.
