[Compiz] [Bug 888039] Re: Gradual degradation in desktop performance.

2011-12-08 Thread Chauncellor
It definitely is slower :).

The more my CPU is used the slower it gets. If I'm running rather
intense processes then the animations will slooowly (but
accurately!) perform. So it is nice and smooth, just slower as the
computer becomes more active.

2011-12-08 Thread Mark
I am also experiencing this bug (or a very similar one) with Ubuntu
11.04 (amd64) Classic using Metacity.

I don't know how to reproduce it, it seems to happen when I least want
it to and it behaves normally when I try causing it again. It also
happens with any window, such as Pidgin just before I came here.

[Compiz] [Bug 888039] Re: Gradual degradation in desktop performance.

2011-12-08 Thread Daniel van Vugt
No problem. We can wait.

The "slow-motion" animations will be directly related to the timing
fixes I did in compiz. That should have been fixed in ppa:vanvugt/compiz
version "vv3" and later.

Although one of the (good) side-effects of fixing the timing and general
graphics smoothness is that everything might look a little slower.
Because you're seeing more unique frames per second than you would
without the PPA. That doesn't mean it's actually slower. Is it??

[Compiz] [Bug 888039] Re: Gradual degradation in desktop performance.

2011-12-08 Thread Chauncellor
My intel laptop hasn't really gotten much better. It's not the really
badly affected one (it was the nvidia desktop), but it's not up to the
performance of Mutter.

As Florin stated, it has been snappier (though animations have an odd
tendency to be slow-motion as the system load is higher).

I'm sorry that I can't report on my desktop for a while :/.

2011-12-08 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Understood. It is just correct practice to get feedback from the person
who created the bug. That's because very often the people subscribing to
a bug logged by someone else actually have a different issue, and it
takes a long time to realize.

I'm not saying that's definitely the case here. But correct practice is
to get final confirmation from the bug reporter.

2011-12-08 Thread Florin Coras
Hi Daniel,

As previously mentioned, despite using your ppa, I'm also getting the
performance degradation. Unfortunately, the command you just posted does
not restore the performance either. However, if I am to compare
performance after degradation sets in, I think (no measurements though)
that the interface is a bit more snappier after installing your fixes.

[Compiz] [Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver

2011-12-08 Thread Daniel van Vugt
If the workaround at the top of this bug and my PPA do not solve the
problem, then it's likely you have a very different bug. And therefore I
would have no idea if nouveau would improve things for you. But it's
worth a try.

Please also confirm the version you're testing from ppa:vanvugt/compiz.
It should be "vv5" now, if you do a system update. Please try that
version before moving on to create/find a new bug.

2011-12-08 Thread Daniel van Vugt
If Chauncellor confirms the bug is still present with my PPA then I will
unassign myself from it, because that means this is not the bug I
thought it was.

Although, reviewing the bug description I am a little suspicious of
unity-window-decorator and how it might interact with the compiz process
(decorator plugin). When the degradation happens next, please open a
terminal and run:

nohup unity-window-decorator --replace &

Does that restore performance?

[Compiz] [Bug 891622] Re: Alt+Right-click doesn't work on gnome-panel when running compiz

2011-12-08 Thread glennric
Compiz should only grab input for the alt key in combination with the
left mouse button, and not with the right mouse button. If this were
done correctly there would not be a conflict, and "Alt-Right Click"
would still work with the panel, at the same time that "Alt-Left Click"
is used for window moving.

[Compiz] [Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver

2011-12-08 Thread Jeroen Hoek
Daniel:
I tried everything in your post. I guess my problem is not amongst the ones
you've solved. :(

Should I switch to nouveau? The nvidia drivers worked quite well up
until Oneiric. Gnome-shell does work, but it has its own issues
(crashing randomly when switching workspaces).

(Windows dragged do not redraw during drag action unless you drag very
slowly.)

[Compiz] [Bug 764330] Re: Move window annoying slow with compiz

2011-12-08 Thread Thomas Schüßler
I think I've found the problem.. at least for my setup.
I disabled Hardware Acceleration in Firefox (8).
No slowdowns for 8 hours now.

[Compiz] [Bug 882479] Re: [Inspiron N4050, Vostro 1450, Vostro V131] Compiz works unnormally after external VGA connected.

2011-12-08 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Compiz crashes here when the layout changes from external only to
extended, but compiz restarts ok here when it didn't for Tim. Needs
further digging to see why it crashes.

[Compiz] [Bug 870181] Re: moving windows around is rather laggy

2011-12-08 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I think this is either a duplicate of bug 92599, or a duplicate of bug
888039. Either way, it should be fixed by some changes I have proposed.

To test the fix and confirm this is a duplicate, please try using
ppa:vanvugt/compiz (https://launchpad.net/~vanvugt/+archive/compiz).

Its nothing to do with hardware, its a general compiz regression that
can be sometimes observed on very high end systems as well.
